Lost weekend bday Tori and Peter Case pamela golden Happy Rhodes ======================================================================== Date: 8 September 1992 11:47:23 CDT From: Subject: Remote compost (sorry, Martin :-) ) Sunday's _Sun-Times_ carries a short item recounting an interview with Sophie B. Hawkins published in last Friday's _Los Angeles Daily News_, in which she professes to be perplexed by the frequent comparisons of her to Madonna. It goes on to say that the second video was shot at the initiative of Columbia Rec ords, which thought the first one was too similar to those of the Umbilical Gir l. Did any of our subscribers in L.A. see the original article? Did it contai n anything else interesting? It may not have emerged clearly in the discussion of _Tom's Album_ that this collection of covers came out on A & M, SV's label; she did not publish it hers elf. Last Thursday's _Tribune_ carried a long article on Concrete Blonde, with emphasis on the physical bouncebacks of Johnette Napolitano and Harry Rushakoff following lives of dissipation. The same edition carried an adjacent story on the reactions to Joan Armatrading's "If Women Ruled the World." The next day's _Sun-Times_ carried another story on CB, which engaged many of the same themes. Tori Amos was interviewed on _CBS This Morning_ this morning. It was a short interview that I was unable to absorb in detail, owing to the short-term necess ity first to talk the cat off the table, and then to get him off the top edge of a chair back on which he was teetering. But it didn't seem like she said anything especially profound; she did speak highly of MTV for being so suppor- tive. The most significant part of her appearance followed the interview, when she sang "Crucify" to her own accompaniment on the piano. She was dressed in her traditional (from what I read in these pages) concert outfit of tank top and jeans (with no belt); I didn't see clearly if she was wearing shoes. She sort of sat on the corner of the piano bench, her torso rotated toward the pian o, and eventually moved down on one knee. This arguably makes her the most unconventional piano player, from the standpoint of body position while playing , since Jerry lee Lewis. In a perverse way, Bob's saga of playing CD's at odd angles reinforces my convi ctions as to the worth of the cassette format. My tape player works well at ma ny angles :-). I vote CD! I get so sick of that da da DA da that I only listen to it with friends who are curious about it. It's basically a collection of novelty songs. About Suzanne Vega, count me as one of those people who like all three albums. The first one is the most distinctive to me (mostly because when I think if her best moments I think of the Marlena song). Angelos writes: > I got Brian Eno's new one 'Nervenet', which so far sounds something like > a cross between Jah Wobble, 'My life in the bush of ghosts' sans samples, > and 'Wrong way up'. That means it sounds really good!! Our mileage definitely varied on this one. We've love _Wrong Way Up_ and other Eno classics like _Before and After Science_ but this one has already been sold to our local used cd vendor. Actually, same with Sophie. I bought it because so many of you liked it but she just didn't seem that interesting to me. She's got a great voice, but her songs just weren't very distinctive. I knew I'd never play it. We've bought too much music recently that I *know* I'll play, like Arson Garden _Wisteria_, Pamela Golden _Happens All the Time_, Bel Canto _White Out Conditions_ (and their new one which should be out shortly), Throwing Muses, Breeders, Belly... and of course, Jane, Tori, Kate and *Happy*. I still play the first four a lot and never get tired of them. I tend to re-re-re-discover _Warpaint_ a lot, too. "Words Weren't Made for Cowards" makes me want to sit down and write all the poems I haven't had time for in the last year and a half. I'll check and see what I can find out from my tapes; the Dennis Miller appearance has already been rerun since cancellation, and its anyone's guess how much longer they'll continue to be on. I don't think Tori's been on the Tonight show -- yet. (: Sophie was last night...yow!) While you're firin' up the VCR, you might want to keep an eye on the MTV awards Wednesday (she said she was planning to attend), and the Arsenio Hall show Thursday where she's scheduled to be a guest. _____________________________________________________________ John Zimmer john@tessi.com "The happy phantom has no right to bitch." _____________________________________________________________ ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 8 Sep 92 20:03:16 EDT From: Vickie Mapes Subject: Pamela Golden's music in a commercial We heard Pamela Golden's music in a commercial last night. Twice, actually. It's in a shoe commercial, of all things. I think the brand is "Free Spirit" and the song is "Ballet Dream" from _Happens All the Time_. The first time I heard it Chris was just flipping channels and I heard a snatch of familiar music. I jumped and asked him to find the channel again. The commercial was just ending and I was *almost* sure it was Pamela's music. Later, during The Tonight Show w/ Jay Leno it played again. We saw it from the beginning, but didn't tape it. I'd like to try and get it on tape. If any Americans or Canadians w/ US Network access sees a shoe commercial with beautiful, ethereal music and "ah ah" vocals, that's it! Amazing! Btw, Sophie B. was on Jay Leno last night. She sang 2 songs and Jay talked with her for a few minutes. She gave the weirdest, wildest explanation of why the album is called _Tongues and Tails_! I'll transcribe it, once I put it onto audiotape. Well, woj and I (barely) survived the weekend. Do not, any of you, *ever* fly Continental Airlines. If they're offering trips to London for $50 and you've got tickets for a KaTe KoncerT and that's your only affordable means of getting there, swim. I'm serious. But Magicon was a blast. Vickie, thanks for the tips- I looked for signs of a Kate Bush Appreciation Society, but didn't find any evidence. Of course, I was only there on Saturday, so I might have already missed something. woj and I wore our Ecto T's, the better to find Klaus and Claudia with, and we got some very strange looks and a couple people even asked what our deal was. :) I had figured that wherever Terry Pratchett was Klaus would be, and sure enough we found him (wearing his official AG Happy T) spectating at a panel discussion on creating internally consistent religions with Terry Pratchett among the participants. Claudia appeared afterwards, and after listening to Terry Pratchett read from his forthcoming Discworld novel (it was even funnier live and with a British accent :) the four of us ended up talking for a little bit, but altogether too briefly. Hopefully we'll see each other again soon! Therefore I decided I will take a chance and try to guess. If I were Happy (and I mean Rhodes :) ) I would perform: a) Poetic Justice: The reasons are obvious to all. This is undoubtebly her rockiest song, most of the crowd won't know who Happy is, and we don't want her to have the fate of most opening acts, we want the audience there to go 'WOW, who's *that*?'. b) Words weren't made for cowards: Po Jo sequel, as I explained in a previous post. Song gets airplay in the west coast. Sure to capture the attention of everybody. The line 'reach into your chest and pull your feelings out' is an attention grabber. I have had friends who refused to listen to Happy express interest when they heard her singing this line. c) Oh the drears: The song was received very well in both concerts, especially the Philadelphia one, and its live version Rocks! d) Waking up: Cobwebs everywhere it's time for a deep sweep. Waking up + awareness + benefit concert ==> count it in. e) Feed the fire: The hit! f) Warpaint: Encore or last song. Gotta let those industry people know which album is her latest. Kevin on the e-bow is a show stopper! Anybody else willing to take a guess? Vickie?
