At the time I wasn't much of a fan, but I still wanted to see her. Most people I mentioned Tori to said "Tori who", but when I asked my friend she said "Of course I know who Tori is, do you think I'm out of it or something?". :-) The opening act was "E", and the jokes that the band made were usually more interesting the music. They did a couple of covers, "I'm only Sleeping" and "Free Bird" - which pointed out how un-excellent their songs were. At one point she called out for requests, and I shouted "wuthering heights" but she ignored me. :-) She said she'd just like to put us all in her pocket (or something) and some guy shouted out "I wish you would too", and she smiled it off pretty quickly. At the end she said we were "great" and seemed to be really happy with the show. Both my friend and myself (neither of which were big on Tori at the time) had the same reaction to the concert, that it was kind of interesting the first hour, but it seemed to lack variety after a while just with the piano. Both of us got kinda sleepy by the end. It was interesting that she played the two "hits" right up at the front, wheras most artist would save one for the end for a big "bang". The covers were interesting. "Smells like teen Spirit" was cool cause we didn't recognize it until the "hello, hello" part, since the rest of the lyrics are basicly un-intellible in the original. The Led zep song was also great, though I was disapointed she didn't say "every inch of my love". :-) I didn't particullary like "Angie" at the time. It's intersting how Tori like just being alone with her piano, and Kate has specically said that she never would do a tour like that. :-( Anyways, since the show, I've gotten hooked to Tori... finally. I really like China, The Happy Phantom, Silent all These years, and Crusify. (Ironically I had almost slept through "China" during the show). Does anyone remember who were the other guests when she was on Letterman, Tonight show, and Dennis Miller? I'd like to tape those when they come on again. Also, is there a kindly person who has transciptions of interviews (aside from the ones posted within the last month) that they could easily mail me? Most importantly, does anyone have transcriptions of any the lyrics? (my tape doesn't have em). --- rhill@netrun.cts.com (ronald hill) NetRunner's Paradise BBS, San Diego CA ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 4 Sep 1992 13:45:08 +0800 From: Ken Taylor Subject: Kittens and Peter.G Mitch writes: > Since then, it has lost its inhibitions with a vengeance. Now, is he > going to grow out of all this, or do I need to become more authoritarian than > I already am? That's one of the best descriptions of Kittens' bad habits I've heard... This is a very diffcult question... Cats - being the individuals they are - tend to use some of these annoying tactics later in life if they are in a bad mood (or any mood in some cases).. The trick is to keep your cat in a good mood. This requires spending a great deal of money on just the right sort of food (I only ever had one cat that would eat the cheap cat food), sitting still at least three nights a week so that the cat can steal some of your body-heat, and making sure that you leave your best shirts available for leaving fur and grotty paw prints on as often as possible... That oughta do it... :) On a completely different subject, Yesterday I had just finished reading various ecto muses about the new Peter Gabriel track, and stepped out to go home from work.. There was this new song playing on the radio which I liked the sound of.. I can relate to the feeling that it doesn't initially sound like PG, but after about 10 seconds it clicked. That was a really wierd sensation.. Unfortunately the track was just finishing, and I haven't heard it since.. Anyway, enough rambles... Loreena McKennitt The Visit Warner Brothers McKennitt chose the title, "THe Visit" for her latest effort because she considers the creative impulse to be a visit - "a thing of grace...not commanded or owned so much as awaited and prepared for. A thing, also, of mystery." Her album is certainly one of the most surprising and pleasant visits so far this year. The songs on the album are smooth and very Celtic tinted, especially with the use of the harp, fiddle, and bodhran on many of the tracks. These songs stir up passionate visions with their simplistic beauty. From the recordings of traditional songs such as "greensleves" and "bonny portmore" to Mckinnett's own version of Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem "The lady of shalott," set in the tradition of an Irish Ballad. "The lady of shalott" is by far the best track on an album which, quality-wise, is far above anything out in today's market. The other songs on the ablum are written by McKennitt, with the exception of "CYmbeline," Which is a poem by William Shakespeare McKinnett set to music. The VIsit is a beautiful album. Its music is rich and dreamy. McKinnett has a beautiful voice which once put to the superb music makes an unbeatable combination. Joseph R. Gurner Pretty neat article to see in the Daily Mississippian ! :) I'm thinking about sending him a copy of Warpaint to see if he will review!!! kiri ======================================================================== From: sae@cmpsci.suffolk.edu (Alan Ezust) Date: Fri, 4 Sep 1992 23:51:25 EDT Subject: hmm Hmmm. These digests are getting bigger and bigger.. Perhaps that's because someone else is doing them? Anyway, now that I am installed in my own apartment and have a stereo which can play CDs again, you'll probably be seeing more and more posts by me with info about new music... I live pretty close to a compact disc rental store (if you can imagine such a concept) so it is very cheap for me to listen to and/or tape anything I want, and this store has a wonderful selection of rare indies and imports. One of my new acquisitions is the sountrack for a movie called "The Double Live of Veronika" or "Le Double Vie De Veronique" as it is called in french. The movie itself is a beautiful one - the plot isn't quite as complicated as a typical american film, but as was already mentioned earler on this list, french movies often more than make up for the plot in the style deparment, and this film certainly qualifies that statement! Part of what contributed to such a lasting impression was the movie's music, however. Ever since I saw it, I had been hunting high and low for the soundtrack. I saw it in Tower Records for something like$25 and decided to hold off until I could rent it in montreal. Well, the disc is called THE DOUBLE LIFE OF VERONIKA, Music by Z. Preisner and K. Kieslowski. Published by SIDERAL, 3 Rue Du Faubourg, Saint Honore, 75008 Paris. It's catalog number is SID 001. Total Running Time: 32 minutes. The 32 minutes of music are incredible, but alas, I can't justify spending $25 on 32 minutes of music, so I just have a tape of it now. Most of it is instrumental, with a very romantic feel to it (like Faure), all acoustic, but liberal use of harp and precussive bells which sound almost electronic. The lead singer sounds a little like a cross between Sarah McLachlan, but with an operatic twist. I think she sings in polish, and some of the tracks send shivers up my spine. I am quite sure that the average Ecto-reader will really appreciate it. The singer's name, in case you are curious, is Elzbita Towarnicka. My fave two tracks are #5, an orchestrated version of Concerto in E minor by Van Den Budenmayer, and track #8 which is a piano solo called "The Puppets". -- S. I also seem to dimly recall SV's mother Who are Utah Saints? What did they do to Kate Bush songs? Anyway,I am pretty sure that SV isn't too hurt by what DNA did to her music - I heard rumours that there were about 4 different remixes of Tom's Diner by 4 different groups, and she put them all together on one disc and sells it under her own name or something. Anyone care to confirm this? John says about SV's third album: > I prefer "Days of open hand" more than the other two. The production > is incredible; there are great sounds in the background, such that one > always finds more to notice the more one listens (try headphones). I do enjoy music which has lots of subtle sounds mixed in, but unfortunately, the album is weak in the sense that the melodies are much too simple and the lyrics, even if they are interesting, are too repetative. The songs just get boring after a while. I still quite enjoy the final track of that disc (can't remember its name) but I never listen to the rest of it... -- S.
