(still haven't heard the new song, but i'm on the lookout for it now). "John M. Relph" sez regarding _days of open hand_: >Definitely one of my favourite albums from 1989. yeah, me too. it was also the last tape to ever be played in my car's tape deck, which mysteriously stopped in the middle of "big space". I have but two things to add: It struck me almost immediately and I have not seen it mentioned before. I love the photo (who took it?). Other's in my office have commented about it as well. Back about a month ago (shortly before Sarah M. passed thru town :), I was in the local Tower Records glancing thru the 'W's and saw a card for _Warpaint_ (yeah, that's what *I* thought). Sure enough, there was Happy's face looking back at me. I decided this was too much coincedence to ignore and it was about time to sample some Happy. I took it to work the next day to listen to, and after the first two tracks I had to turn it off -- I was blown away. This woman can sing! (and write, and play, and produce...) This was much too good to just put on while I slaved over a hot terminal, so I managed to put it away (after emailing Vickie and Jessica to the effect that "it finally happened...now I know what you've been on about..." and subscribed), and gave it a proper listen that night at home. I'm still knocked out by Happy's voice (can you tell that I'm a female-vocal freak?). Her rich, warm lows can melt me into a puddle, and those highs... well, "uncanny" has probably been overused but I can't come up with anything better. "Feed the Fire" is still a favorite, along with "Words...", but every song speaks to me on some level. I've yet to order the 1st 4, but they're definitely on the list. PS: A belated Happy Birthday wish, Meredith! Yes, there are two soundtracks available, here. One for the TV episode and one for the movie. They are by Angelo Badalamenti. 5 I haven't heard them, so I can't give a review. The upshot of this is : if it's a problem for you, could you let me know? If I get no replies (or very few) I'll post it to ecto on the weekend. Yes, I saw it the other night on MTV (really caught my eye as I scanned the channels). I'd characterize it as more of a "current technology" surrealist video. It's disturbing to us probably in the same way "La Chien Andalou" (The Andalusian Dog) by Bunel was to film goers in the 30s. He appears to struggling with themes of corruption/death. I fear this time the video may have a negative impact on the songs sales; the video very much dominates the music and since the video is somewhat unsettling the music might pick up bad associations for those who hadn't heard the music before. Ken Latta ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 02 Sep 92 21:24:44 EDT From: woj Subject: a few quickies hey all... got a few releases of note today. the first is the magnetic fields' _a wayward bus_. some of you might recogize the name from c'est la mort's _heart lust in limbo_, which was graced with the wonderful song "100,000 fireflies". well, _a way- ward bus_ is a continuation of that, as well as a retrospective of their past. say what? well, the first ten tracks are new while the last ten are from a previous not on cd release called _distant plas- tic trees_. the magnetic fields' sound blurs the boundry between min- imalist pop and unpolished, seemingly unfinished melodies. it's very sparse with instrumentation usually limited to percussion and synths with the occasional oddball guitar or horn. susan anways' vocals are sometimes just too precious, sometimes a bit annoying and sometimes just perfect. the lyrics though are wonderful, mean- dering psychobabble. so, the end result: kinda inconsistant. i like the older material the best, but there are as many good bits in the new material as there are bad apples in the old material. buy at your own risk, but i'll give it one thumb up out of two. i also picked up a single of remixes from anne dudley and jaz coleman's _songs from the victorious city_. four remixes of "ziggarats of cin- namon" and anothe track called "habebe". this is fairly decent techno of the mellower variety. a bit monotonous after a while though. i would think that the album would be good based on this since there should be enough variety there to keep you interested. does anyone have the album? woj ======================================================================== Date: 3 September 1992 10:43:03 CDT From: Subject: My initiation into pussy :-), or: An old dog person learns new tricks Got an existential ethological question on cat parenting for youse :-). A couple of weeks ago, I arrived home to find a kitten stuck between a drainpip e and the brickwork, meowing its head off. With the help of a neighbor, it was unstuck, but continued to hang around outside for the next couple of days, until it rather diffidently moved inside, where it's lived ever since. Since then, it has lost its inhibitions with a vengeance. It climbs up on tables with impunity, likes to massage its little teeth and claws on human flesh (albeit without inflicting too much trauma), loves to paw potted plants (would Jacques Derrida call this a deconstruction of the vegetation?), and has the irresistible impulse to be fed at inconvenient hours. Now, is he going to grow out of all this, or do I need to become more authoritarian than I already am?
