Hi, It's probably a silly idea, but now that TIME magazine is on-line at AOL, shouldn't somebody e-mail the arts editor a FAQ and talk about how Happy's career has been helped by the Internet, and hope that they will get interested enough to write up a piece on that? The thought occured to me after noticing that more than half the letters to the editor in the last two issues are coming from AOL subscribers. If D'Cuckoo can have an article in 'Der Spiegel', so can Happy (in TIME)! :) Angelos ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 14 Oct 93 16:33:59 CDT From: The man with one _Red Shoes_ poster and no _RhodeSongs_ Subject: Random Rants The poster from Court arrived in my incoming snailmail, as opposed to that of the house in the next street over with the same number, yesterday. It looks good. Thanx, Court. How 'bout those 9-digit zip codes :-). Gratifying to see the World Series come to one of the historic hotbeds of Happyvangelism (ah there, Spiro Agnew :-) ). Wonder if Susanne is in need enough of a real challenge, to try to get them to book Happy to sing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during the 7th-inning stretch of the 7th game :-). WRT Angelos' suggestion that the editors of Time mag be emailed about Happy: Sounds like a good idea to me. I have an additional idea: One of my fellow inmates on the WNN mailing list fed info to Newsweek for their recent corner- of-the-cover story on the net. I'd be glad to refer whoever takes on the job of writing for Time to him, so the former can find out who'd be good to contact at The Other Weekly Newsmagazine. robert the Bob (cf. Garrison Keillor show, 5/18/91) points out to newbies on this list that we're a FlameFree Zone (sic). This reminded me that in the evolving Ecto Product File, I discuss the potential for fireplace logs that are chemically treated to burn with a blue flame. (I think natural gas will do that without being treated, for that matter.) It now seems to me that there might be a market out there for FEED THE FIRE fuzzy blue-burning logs and gas :-). (In the same connection, I also recall writing once in these pages that Happy's rendition of "Beat it Out" has possibilities as background music for a PSA on extinguishing various kinds of fires. Go figure.) Sylvian is supposed to have a new album sometime in the reasonably near future (but don't hold yer breath). Apparently Mr Fripp has also worked on the forthcoming John Wetton LP, as well as putting together another King Crimson retrospective, entitled _The Concise King Crimson_. >Has anyone seen them in concert? I just got the Sylvian & Fripp collaberation _The First Day_, which I think is the newest. I like it, but I'm not quite sure how to describe it. I don't know Sylvian's previous work, but I suspect this is Sylvian filtered through Fripp rather than vice versa. Does that make sense? I'm not quite sure how else to put it. The music is rather ambient house at the base, with the unpredictable Fripp guitar wandering in, around and through. I don't have I Advance Masked, but I have the other Fripp/Summers CD, and there's some similarity. It's not much like late Crimson, which was strongly influenced by Belew. In fact, the last track wouldn't have been out of place on the Fripp/Eno albums. Interesting stuff, though I have no idea if it's to your tastes. He concentrates most heavily, > however, on The Cranberries and The Cranes. Check it out. Thanks for this information. I bought the issue this morning. I had thought I'd have to go to Tower to find it, but I actually bought it at my "L" stop! This guy carries everything from The Village Voice to Architecual Digest (I know, I need a spell-checker, but I have Philip Sainty at my beck and call to help me out) to Ladies Home Journal to Meaty Men (their X selection is quite remarkable) so I took a look around and lo and behold, there was the Interview! This issue has Patricia Arquette on the cover (looking more like a young Jessica Lange than Rosanna's sister). I haven't read it all the way through but I did notice a nice tribute to Edith Piaf and a one-page feature on an artist named "Lois." The article makes her sound pretty cool, hhas anyone heard her? She hhas an album called _Strumpet_ on K Records, and she's from Washington, DC. It says "...her haunted balleds and lo-fi folk rockers sparkle within the disc's rough production. Lois keeps her cool whether she's baring her inner thoughts about inner thoughts or taking pokes at media coverage of the feminist, punk rock grrrl scene." About the title of the album, she says "To me, a strumpet is somebody who is bold--somebody like birth-control advocate Margaret Sanger." It's a weird magazine, big and heavy, the kind of magazine where it's hard, if not impossible, to tell the hoity-toity ads from the actual articles. Still, there are interesting things in it, and any magazine that prints the album cover of _The Dreaming_ for an article about The Cranberries and The Cranes is ok by me. Thanks again Bo! Vickie ps, I'm going to forward your post to gaffa, hope it's ok. pps, Greil Marcus needs a copy of RhodeSongs, don't you think? :-) ======================================================================== From: p.cohen@genie.geis.com Date: Fri, 15 Oct 93 03:55:00 BST Subject: Re: Us > Yeah, he had been doing *plenty* of other things with his time. She also mentioned that Suzanne is trying to hook up with the guy for the CMJ panel (thanks BobL!!) and seemed very positive about the whole thing, though she wasn't yet sure if she would appear there herself. On November 12, Happy will be live on WDST in Woodstock. She said that she might not get to go on until after midnight because the times are still very up in the air. She *will* be there though, and she'll be performing live in the studio for about 45 minutes so I hope *someone* *anyone* can tape it. Bob told about Happy shutting her finger in a door and she talked a bit about it. It's still very sore and stiff and she's trying to take good care of it. The reason she messed up the lyrics was because she lost her concentration while trying to play the guitar with a bum finger. Ouch! :-(. She said she hopes that it will be in good shape by the 12th but that if it wasn't she'd still be at WDST. She'd just get someone to play for her. Not much is going on. She's writing songs for the next album and that's coming along pretty well. There will be *NO* tour this year, sorry. She is looking for players from around the Woodstock/Bearsville area to play on the album because it seems that only Kelly Bird will be back with her singing some backup vocals. The rest of the old band are scattered, doing their own things. She really does want to tour for the next album and hopefully the players she finds will also be able to go on the road with her. It just all depends on finances anyway, since H&K would be paying for everything out of their own pockets. The suprise that I alluded to awhile back was a limited tour, consisting of Happy and Kevin and maybe one other person. Unfortunately, it fell through because they just don't have the money. Too bad :-(, but it will still happen at some point, just not before the end of the year. Well, that's not meant to imply that she'll be touring at the beginning of next year because she's just not sure about the timing. I think she'd like to get the album out in the spring and then tour. We'll see. It's so nice to be into at least one artist who works quickly! (Considering that Equipoise came out at the beginning of this year, shooting fo a spring release for HR7 is *great* news!) That's pretty much all we talked about wrt Happy's career. The rest of the conversaion was about WOMAD and music and movies she's seen/heard recently. ChrisS, I told her about you seeing her at WOMAD but not wanting to bother her. She said you should have said hi, so if you see her around, know that it's ok with her. She said that she and Kevin met Tim Finn after the show and *she* was tongue-tied and nervous. She loves Tim's new album and said she was a big Crowded House fan (that was news to me) and really wanted to meet Neil Finn too. They went to some sort of party after WOMAD and Tim was there. Rumor had it that Peter Gabriel would be at the party but he wasn't. Happy found out later that Peter and Sinead and Sheila and Neil went to do the Rockline interview and that's why they they weren't at the party. Bummer. (But I heard that interview and it was pretty darn good. I had no idea that Happy was missing meeting Peter because of it though.) They had a great time at WOMAD and they did get there in time to see Sheila. I found out that Happy knew about Sheila years ago. To re-tell a little story... When Happy was about 16 she was pen pals with a fella from England. They used to trade tapes of music and one of the tapes he sent her was a compilation that he'd put together with a lot of different artists on it. She said he'd put songs by Monsoon (lead singer: Sheila Chandra!) on the tape. That particular tape is also notable because this very nice fella had also, very thougtfully, put some Kate Bush songs on it. That tape is the first time Happy had ever heard Kate and she was hooked, line and sinker. I wish I knew the name of this VNF (very nice fella) so I could thank him. (You're not lurking on Ecto, are you?) Happy *loves* the Bjork album!! Happy likes the Heidi Berry album, the new Tim Finn and the new Duran Duran (Valerie, I thought of you when she said that) and doesn't particularly like the Cranberries (said she's kinda tired of that breathy angelic stuff. She likes Deloris's voice, but wishes she'd *do* something with it. Maybe next album) or the most recent Mouth Music (it's just not anywhere near as good as the first album.) She bought Clannad's "Banba" and likes some of it. It's the first she's ever heard Clannad. I told her to get Maire's solo album. Recent movies she's liked are _The Age Of Innocence_ and _True Romance_. She wants to see _Household Saints_ and I gave her the thumbs up on it. To whom it may concern: Happy's a *HUGE* Sandman fan, and has been for about a year. John Sandoval, I forgot to ask about the cards :-( sorry. That's all folks, she got a call from a relative and had to go. 'Twas nice to hear her voice again and converse. *Hugs* to all and to all a nightly night Juha! If you've never heard her before and you hear this album, this is what she's like. I think I prefer "Kite" actually. As somebody said, it is very poppy stuff, kinda Byrdsy sometimes. Her voice can be a little lifeless at times on this album. She kind of drifts in and out of tune a bit, and the tone of her voice is sometimes flat and uninspiring. Also, she tends to go for predictable rhymes. She even almost transgressed the rule to never, ever use the line "you light up my life" (she uses "you light my life"). Still, I love her, I think she's neat, I wish her the best, I enjoy her music, but I don't expect her to break any new ground.
