Copperman Subject: DCD in Tibet? Last night I saw the film Baraka, which features the music of Dead Can Dance as well as a host of others. Actually, it's kind of hard to identify anything that's in the movie, since it's a Koyenesqaatsi(?) type blend of images. At the end, the credits roll by with hundreds of locations that you can't match with the visuals unless you already knew what they were, and a long list of music, with similar matching dificulties. The DCD song they used was Host of Seraphim for The Serpant's Egg (oddly, the only DCD that I have). The movie had some pretty remarkable scenes, but it didn't add up to much for me. Just a series of great shots that leave you with ideas like Boy the world sure is a big and marvelous place, Nature is amazing, Man can create some fine things, usually for religious reasons, but can do some pretty awful things too. THe film makers have this interesting idea that the movie is a world tour of the mysteries, miracles and tragedies of nature and man, but it is open ended so that the viewer can take away anything they want from it. A cynic might say that if I thought it was shallow, it must be because I am shallow. The movies as clever as you are. I spoke with a very interesting woman named Melanie Walsh this morning. She is responsible for bringing the Story, Dougie MacLean, Patty Larkin and others to town in the next month. She is a vegetarian caterer who often includes dinner with her shows (for additional money and better seats). I should be getting a bunch of information in the mail, but I was really impressed with her organization and enthusiasm for the music. I'm all set to order my dinner tickets to the Story on the 22nd, at Spreckles Masonic Theater (and her phone number had 666 in it too.) [Claudia: Vickie, I can understand now FULLY why you ranted so much about them.] The venue was the newly built Philharmonie in Cologne; not only sold out for this show, but we also saw a crowd at the gates still hoping to get tickets. It was the perfect venue for this experience. Excellent acoustics and view of the stage, smoking was not allowed in the whole building and the doors to the audience ranks were only opened in between songs. Want to stand out in a DCD concert? Wear bright colours, red, white; anything but black. The whole audience seemed to be dressed in black, quite in contrast to the band itself, the seven of them wore anything but. I only know the names of Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry; the others weren't introduced. In fact they hardly ever talked to the audience. LG is clearly heart and soul of the group, and while the rest were wearing quite casual clothes she wore a kind of long white cloak over a white silk robe, which made her look like a priestess or some such. The impression was enhanced by the fact that when she sings she stands perfectly still most of the time with her hands folded on the (rather medieval looking) instrument stand before her. It's almost impossible to assign instruments to performers. LG & BP were singing as well as playing instruments; there were two keyboards, a drum set and a lot of percussion instruments, flute, lute, acoustic guitars, ... Only one of the keyboard players was playing at his instrument for the whole time. The others kept changing instruments. The selection of songs was a nice mix of old and new material. Most of it sounded familiar. The perfection in music and singing was astounding. A couple of songs were much more percussive than I remembered them from the albums. At one point all seven were playing drums or percussion instruments. The highlights of this act were definitely the acapella songs sung by Lisa Gerrard. I drastically have to rearrange my top 10 of female vocals. Listening to the albums it didn't show that much, but from the first song, as soon as she had my full attention at the concert, I was captivated, even forgetting that I got wet feet on our way from the railway station to the theatre. [Claudia: Actually, hadn't I been sitting, she would have blown me off my feet with the very first note. Unbelievable volume and control and so beautiful it was almost intoxicating.] Quite noticeable this wasn't only my view. After the last encore, which was another acapella piece, she received a standing ovation. So, to repeat myself and what others have said, DON'T MISS THIS CONCERT if you have the chance to see it! Small addendum: sunday night we zapped into MTVs "120 Minutes" and some horrible band was playing. I said to Claudia that the next one surely will be a great song, so if I should slip my music tape in the VCR. I didn't do that, it was just wishful thinking, and next came the first song from the new DCD album "Yulunga (spirit dance)"! The source of this songs was quoted as being from the movie "Baraka". Does anyone have any information about this movie? _____ Klaus "Cosmic Vagabond" Kluge --*-- klaus@inphobos.wupper.de All libraries, everywhere, are connected by the bookworm holes in space created by the strong space-time distortions found around any large collections of books. - Terry Pratchett, "Small Gods" ======================================================================== Date: 13 Oct 1993 19:58:32 -0400 (EDT) From: Been to the East Subject: Re: Happy at CD Connection Out of curiosity, what did they have on Runrig? :) Well, keeping in mind all of the suggestions you all gave me a few weeks ago when I was asking for recommendations (still am!) I went looking for some of the stuff you recommended most highly. I got Gabriel's 'Passion' (one of my friends claims she swears by it for sex music, go figure) which is beautiful, and the new DCD, though I wasn't able to find 'Aion' or whichever Test Dept. album was the subject of mild conroversy a while ago. (The groups, yes; the albums, no...) I should probably make a trip to Boston or someplace else with a Really Big record store... I still need 'Warpaint' anyway. I listened to Diamanda Galas once and was unimpressed. While it's true that her messages bear listening to, and that the fact that they are messages of anger and frustration for the most part *do* translate well to screaming, the fact is that it's just not particularly pleasant to listen to. I usually keep music around because it *is* pleasant to listen to.
