Shadbolt) Subject: rambling on a Wednesday Hi y'all, time to catch up on all of yesterday's messages. 1. concerning the inante musical skills subject: when i was in my senior year on my Music degree I got asked a billion questions on this very subject. Seems a woman at USC was doing phD on the subject of music and inheritance. Get this; she found that musical skill must be genetic since every person interviewed {something like 758 for stats} had a relative within 2 connections {that is to say if not parent, then uncle/aunt/ grandparent} who was musically inclined. Not all respondents were in Music programs, something like 8% were. Get this, she nearly lost her lunch on me since neither of my parents can even carry a tune {unless it's to the dumpster} yet my paternal grandmother and her _entire_ family are muscial nut cases {she's one of 13 kids, all musically talented}. Go figure. 2. to our new international member asking about Happy is SF. Most of the independents have Happy, but they over-charge. Tower's in SF probably have them also; if not you can call me and I can p'up the entire collection at the Dublin Tower and get them to you while you're here. { another use for ecto -- CD service! scary huh?} BTW, what are you coming to SF for? There's usually something going on around here to do.. Dave Dixon probably has ideas, Dave? oh, Dave? 3. Toni Childs albums- according to Release listing for the rest of 1993, no new albums are planned. later all. ************************** Troy J. Copies of the 1993 HAPPY BIRTHDAY PROJECT are now available to any and everyone. I have tacked the listings for the three tapes onto the end of this note, though it includes no mention of the dulcet tones of Mellifluous Mitch and the other Ectophile contributors. Find out what Happy was raving about in these tapes! Surprises galore! Copies of the NORDIC SAMPLER are now available, thanks to the efforts of the Scandinavian corner of the Ecto world. (Unfortunately, I lost the list of the contributors. :( ) The listings for these two tapes are also tacked onto the end of this post. These two tapes are full of wonderful and varied music. Give them a whirl! And as I've mentioned before, I am more than willing to add any other regional samplers people want to put together. British? Australian? German? Bostonian? Texan? Wyomingite? Antarctican? :) Finally, a small piece of business. I still have yet to hear from several contributors to the Happy Birthday Project. You get copies of the project tapes at reduced rates, but I would like to hear how you want to cover the extra tapes: Bob Lovejoy, Alan Moorse, Kjetil T. Homme, Martin Hanley. Finally, finally, information about getting tapes from the tape dubbing project is included in an accompanying FAQ post. Finally, finally, finally, I apologize for the massive delays in getting this annoucement and even some tape orders out. I simply ran out of tapes, and the company I order from did not have them in stock until a couple of weeks ago. So order NOW, before I run out of tapes again. :) Doug Burks _O_ dbx@olympic.atmos.colostate.edu |< She really is!! Happy Gift Project 1991, Vol I (C-100) Happy Gift Project 1991, Vol II (C-100) These are songs selected by Ectophiles as a gift for Happy for the winter holiday season. It is quite an eclectic collection to browse through. Miscellaneous Happy tape (C-90) World Cafe interview of Happy, including live versions of "Feed the Fire", "Words Weren't Made For Cowards", and "Given In". The songs are included as originally recorded and in the context of the interview. The tape also includes two songs by Kevin Bartlett with Happy singing ethereal backing vocals, and the five Bartlett/Rhodes demos. Femme Music Collection Vol I (Lushy Pop) (C-90) Femme Music Collection Vol II (Mish Smash) (C-90) Femme Music Collection Vol III (Voices) (C-90) Femme Music Collection Vol IV (International Sampler) (C-90) Femme Music Collection Vol V (Easy, does it?) (C-90) Femme Music Collection Vol VI (C-90) A wide-ranging collection of female vocalists selected by Vickie Mapes Happy Rhodes Live! Albany NY 18 March 1992 Vol I (C-100) Happy Rhodes Live! Albany NY 18 March 1992 Vol II (C-100) Live recording by woj of the Happy Rhodes concert at the QE2. This is a high quality recording for the conditions. (Note that this tape will only be sent to Ectophiles. Please respect Happy's and Kevin's wishes and don't make copies of this for anyone who does not already own Happy's albums). The "Last" Champagne Jam 15 May 1992 Vol I (C-100) The "Last" Champagne Jam 15 May 1992 Vol II (C-100) The "last" Champagne Jam broadcast on WESU-FM in Middletown CT, hosted by Meredith Tarr, chock full of Ecto-style artists and even some (*gasp*) male vocalists. The recording is of decent quality. The Unofficial Happy Sampler (C-100) A sampler of songs by Happy Rhodes from all five of her albums, as chosen by Meredith Tarr. Happy Rhodes Live! Philadelphia PA 21 March 1992 (C-100) Live recording by Greg Bossert of the Happy Rhodes concert at the Harrison Auditorium. This is a good quality recording, though the last third of the concert was lost. (Note that this tape is covered by the same restrictions as the Albany concert tape). Happy radio tour (C-100) Recordings of Happy interviews by Ed Sciaci (WYSP 28 Mar 93) and Helen Leicht (WMMR 3 Apr 93), including live acoustic performances of her and others' songs. Happy Birthday Project 1993, Vol I (C-90) Happy Birthday Project 1993, Vol II (C-90) Happy Birthday Project 1993, Vol III (C-90) These are songs selected by Ectophiles as a gift for Happy's 28th birthday. As always, it is a wild, wonderful, and occasionally weird collection of music. Nordic Sampler I (C-100) Nordic Sampler II (C-100) A sampler of Scandinavian female vocalists selected by the Nordic Ecto Conspiracy. A wide range of styles and music. If you want to read the actual contents of any or all of these tapes, please e-mail me. Besides, each ordered tapes comes complete with a full cassette label and a separate printed content list. * Sounds great! How do I get a copy of any or all of these tapes? Three methods are available for getting the tapes: * Establish a cassette account. In other words, send me a check to cover the cost of cassettes, packaging, and postage. Put in as much as you want, not necessarily just to cover a single order (though you can do that, too). After your first order, anytime you want a cassette, you would just e-mail me, and I can get things out to you as soon as possible without your mailing me anything. In this case, I would dip into my own supply of chrome cassettes which I've ordered in bulk (Thanks, Mitch!). Accounts can be opened or closed at any time. Put in as much as you want, as more tapes will be added. * Establish a cassette account, as in 1, except that I will purchase whatever type of tape you specifically request. Obviously the cost of the tape will be higher, though the packaging and postage will be the same. * Send me the cassettes you want to put the music on (C-90 or C-100) along with money to cover packaging and return postage. I will copy the tapes you request and return them. Consider opening an account, as it will save you having to mail an order, let alone the cassettes. * How much will it cost? If you use my stash of cassettes, the cost for the cassettes is currently $1.22 each. The packaging for mailing the cassettes is between $0.35 and $0.62, depending on the number of tapes mailed. The postage varies according to the number of tapes and the destination. So far, it has ranged between $0.98 and $16.70. Big help, eh? If you wish a more precise estimate of your postage costs, I can give you one via e-mail. US orders will be mailed book rate, taking five to seven days. Non-US orders will be air mailed, taking about seven to ten days. As for foreign payments, so far everyone has sent either American cash or a money order denominated in US currency. I believe that I can handle anything denominated in US currency, and probably any cashier's check (a check drawn on the bank's rather than a personal account). * Where do I send the order? To me. My mailing address: Doug Burks, 2036 West Plum Street C7, Fort Collins CO 80521 USA Orders will be processed in the order I get them, with special dispensation for foreign orders. Please note that I will not process any e-mail orders unless you have an open cassette account. * Anything else I should know? Just a few odds and ends: If I make any mistakes, I will replace the tape for free. I intend to post a progress report on the dubbing operation regularly. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! To which I shall add a dissenting opinion. I tried to listen. Honest. I'll admit that my opinion was formed by a single listen to a single CD, so keep it in mind. I kept hearing about Galas, and I was thrilled when I found _Plague Mass_ at my local used CD stored. I flipped through the lyrics and liked what I saw; I liked the accompanying pictures. I snagged the it and couldn't wait to get home. After I did get to listen to it, I was shocked. How could anything so lyrically powerful be so (dare I say it?) boring? The first couple of cuts held my attention, because they were so unusual. However, I just found the constant screaming annoying at first and tedious in the end. I was really disappointed. I *wanted* to like this, but I could find no reason to. I don't *think* I am scared off by "difficult listening music." Most people who know me are usually astonished by the range of stuff I know and like, including my buddies at the used-CD store. _Plague Mass_ left me unimpressed. This is the first and only CD I have *ever* returned. Like I said, my opinion of DG is based on this single episode, but I found nothing in what I heard sufficient to compell me to buy anything else, not when there is so much else unheard by me. Brni says it's music that one should force oneself to listen to. Maybe. I would never say that art should shy away from the atrocities humanity inflicts on itself and the rest of the world, but I guess I couldn't find a reason to inflict this particular atrocity on myself a second time. (Maybe I would have gotten it if I'd seen the performance? Who knows.) Just my humble opinion, not intended to start a flame-fest, and certainly not intended to impugn the tastes of any other ecto-philes. Respectfully submitted, -- Kate ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 13 Oct 93 16:53:51 MET From: Albert Philipsen Subject: Re: Eleanor McEvoy I wrote: >Yesterday I picked up a copy of Eleanor McEvoy's self-titled album >that was recently released on the Geffen label. > >I've listened to the whole disc four times now, and I think it is >great. The music has grown on me considerably after I wrote that. It's a kind of Shawn Colvin-like music, but with a very different voice. It first reminded me a bit of Tracy Chapman, but she can sing much higher than that. Sometimes she puts a bit of anger in her voice and sounds like Sinead O'Connor. There are uillean pipes on two songs, and she also plays the violin. Besides that, there are three very good reasons why this album is for Ectophiles: - Eleanor is an anagram of Loreena (McKennitt); - the writer R.A. MacAvoy (note the similarity in the last name) has been discussed here; - and finally, we've got our own 'voy' here on Ecto. I hope this proves the point. Well, there are two things you definitely must see while you're here: 1) Alcatraz and 2) Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley. There's also two *excellent* record stores on Telegraph you can spend all your guilders in (Rasputin's has Happy's entire catalogue). The view from the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley is also well worth the trek. On other fronts: Well, Em & I had a bit of a tragedy last Friday.. Em has a family of lovebirds; two parents and three kids. Two of the kids pair-bonded, leaving the third one all alone in the corner of the cage. We called him Sweetie-Bird because when you opened the cage, he'd hop right on your finger, climb up your arm, and fall asleep on your shoulder. Friday night we came home to find Sweetie-Bird dead on the bottom of the cage, apparently with a broken neck, probably inflicted by the pair-bonded birds. He was only six months old. So the next day, to lessen the blow, Em & I went out and got a new kitten. She's an *adorable* little creature, very dark brown .. looks like a mix of Havana Brown and Siamese (a very vocal kitty she is). We finally decided on a name the other day: Olive. We're in the process of housetraining her :P. Went on another CD binge at Amoeba's.. to those of you who still have the last Pulse! magazine (the one with Cypress Hill on the cover), open it up and look at page 42. AWFUL advertisement, isn't it? Reminds me of bad Mike Jittlov. (to those of you who don't have the magazine, the ad is for the debut album by Bryan Wilkinson Mann, and it's very stylized, pastel-ridden, new-agey, sensitive-artist-holding- an-airbrushed-musical-note-in-his-hand. While at Amoeba, perusing the Clearance bin, I came across this album, shrinkwrapped, for $2! I thought, "If this album is being sold, UNOPENED, for $2, it must really be awful... I gotta get it." So now I own it, and guess what, it's pretty bad (surprise!). The lyrics are hopelessly cliched. "Our heartbeats in tune.. " Bleah! Other purchases: _Helter Stupid_ by Negativland (hilarious!) _Chronos_ by Michael Stearns (very, very cool) _Dream Generator_ by Carlos Alomar (former Bowie guitarist.. it's ok) _Dr. Death's Volume IV, The Marvels of Insect Life_ (saw this recommended on here, and I really like it.
