(One . too many, or one . too few? You be the judge) I love Happy's music *SO* much! I had listened to Equipoise all the way through, then had just put on VI when I got a talk message from Jeffy. We talked for a while then he was inspired to put on VI as well. We cued up together at the beginning and listened to it at the same time, 700 miles apart. We were trying to type the lyrics as we heard them, and it got pretty funny during songs like "Possessed" because it's so fast-paced :-). I know this music by heart, there's no way to even begin to calculate hhow many times I've heard it in the last 5 years, yet I *never* get tired of it. It just keeps getting better and better and better. I've said it before, but it honestly just amazes the hell out of me. Over and over and over again, I'm awestruck at Happy's talent and beauty and emotion. I will always love this music, always. What's alien to me: I was talking to Preston Klik, the keyboard player from Big Hat, and I asked him what kind of music he most liked. He said he didn't really listen to much music, and when he did, he only listened to an album once. He's constantly trading in CDs he's only listened to once, for CDs he'll listen to once, then trade it in for a CD he'll listen to once.... I thought that surely he'd have favorites, very favorites that he *did* listen to over and over again. Everyone does, don't they? I asked him, and he honestly doesn't. If I understand correctly, he's never, ever listened to a CD more than once, unless someone else played it while he was around. I still can't believe it. How is such a thing possible? All the best music takes multiple listenings to understand and appreciate. All the favorite music takes multiple listenings to get to *know*, to become familiar with, to become an old friend. It's alien to me to not have favorites that you'd listen to over and over again, learn the lyrics, the lilts of the voice, the music, to get embedded in your *soul* and become a part of your life, to play for other people, to be cherished and well-loved. "Music, all I hear is music, guaranteed to please" I couldn't live without it. Vickie ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 13 Oct 93 1:17:52 EDT From: WretchAwry Subject: Om pah pah pah (Listening to "Take Me With You" now.... I adore Happy's waltz songs!) Julee Cruise has a new album, does anyone have it yet? I heard a song on the radio this morning before I left for work. I had to leave before the backannounce so I didn't hear the name of the song or the album. The song sounded very Badalementi-ish. Very nice! I also heard a song by Toni Childs I hadn't heard before, which is why I asked about a new album. Troy bought "Union" which was her first, so I still don't know if she actually does have something new out there. Her second album is called "House of Hope" so if anyone sees anything other than those two, please post. Toni Childs isn't for everybody (though, who is?) but I like her *very* much. She's a bit too uneven to be a top favorite, but she's definitely an apostle :-). We bought the new Kirsty MacColl, but I haven't listened to it yet. Happy addiction strikes again. I was going to listen to Kirsty tonight, but thought I would listen to Equipoise first. That led me to play VI, then VII, now I'm listening to Rearmament. I don't think I'll get to Kirsty, as muchh as I love her and as much as I've been waiting for this new album, tonight. WCBR in Chicago has RhodeSongs and they're playing 3 cuts from it. "Feed The Fire," "Ashes To Ashes," and "Because I Learn" are all 3 on the playlist. I requested Happy the other day and nearly fell out of bed when I heard "Because I Learn" play. I called the DJ and asked him how he came to choose that song and he told me about the 3 songs! Great! Chicagophiles, keep requesting Happy! The request line is (708) 818-WCBR. WELCOME BACK METH!! Tremendous thanks to Uli for coming thru and mailing me a complete tanscript of all the responses to my Rainbirds message that got footah'ed to the direct mail folks but missed us digestables. I don't know how you did it, Uli, hope it didn't cost too much time or effort. I do appreciate it. Jeffy Syrinxed: |Beth loaned me _Two Faces_ back in...um...July, maybe? for a while and I |was rather fond of it. Before that, all I'd heard was my copy of the |"Blueprint" single. However, I can't say I had quite the strong positive |reaction to _Two Faces_ that you've had. No question, it's a neat album. |But I wonder if I'm using that word in a Kevin Costner-esque way. There's |something a bit too melodramatic and forced artiness about _Two Faces_. OK, I think I know what you're talking about here. I sensed a similar artsiness, maybe pretention, or whatever. My first reaction was "what a strange, fresh concept." My second reaction was, "maybe this is due to their being from another country." Alot of the songs' lyrics are very direct (i.e. they treat words like expensive commodities and use them very economically), and maybe this is the result of English not being their first language. I guess what I'm saying is I could not imagine myself being able to write like that in English because I don't think like that in English. Maybe I'm completely wrong here, but I get the definite impression that there is some other-language working on a conceptual level that is reflected in the English lyrics. I presume this language would be German. Whether or not I'm wrong, I find this to be fascinating and *NEW* and that's one of the things that hooked me *right away*. I don't have the lyrics in front of me but I'll bring in some e.g.s if people want. (One that comes to mind right away is "Real" which may or may not be more "obvious" in another language.) Of course a corollary to this is that people from other countries singing in your language (and I should add, writing insightful, intelligent, interesting, even oblique lyrics) gives you an unusual glimpse into their perspectives. And at the same time, you discover that *some* perspectives are *universal*. I'm always intrigued by "a different way of thinking" that I would never have thought of. So, what you found somewhat negative in the music I think I found somewhat more positive. |On |first listen to the two earlier albums, I'm going to say I prefer them to |the later album. I think the lead singer's voice 'n lyrics tend to work |better in the setting of a "standard" rock band. She does have an interesting voice in that it sounds more like she's placing the words carefully and deliberately on top of the music in their right places, rather than singing a *flow* of words, as one would normally do when singing. Her whole approach seems very studied, and again, economical. This contributes again to the NEWness of the music for me. She doesn't sing a lot of extra filler noises or repeated phrases --- it's all very matter of fact, no-nonsense, direct, immediate. BTW, I really like the 1st 2 albums as well (I don't have #4, but will have to get it...). They just aren't as unusual, stark, cutting as Two Faces. Angelos finds some offense in my original post: |[the following is as close to a flame as I have ever posted post-jorn, |apologies for the tone to everyone including mjm :(] | |mjm surprises me by saying several things: |>So what exactly is the deal with this group and, say, Bobo, |>and any other group in a foreign (esp. Eur.) country writing |>and singing songs in English. Are the members of these groups |>German natives? How do they know English and why use it to |>write songs in, esp. if they're music is not available in US? |>Or Canada. Is it available in UK/Aust/NZ? What is their audience? |>Is there that large an English-speaking population in Germany |>itself? Or, are they originally from some other, English-speaking |>country? |What an americanocentric perspective of the world!!!!!! *sigh* |The question how do they know English is the one that strikes me the most. |THEY LEARNED IT! Why? Because the world music market is dominated by |English speaking artists and the trends are dictated by the US and UK |charts. Hurrumph! Well, I guess you really misinterpretted what I said. What I meant to get across was the exclamation: How silly and sad for these and other non-English natives to feel *compelled* to write and perform in English just because they think it will make them more money/give them a bigger audience/garnish them more respect. Indeed, the reason I posted about it in the first place was to ask if I was missing something... if English was that commonly known globally (or at least in Germany), if this was a common practice or a rare one. And to ask if this is the only reason they were doing it, or if there were some other, more elusive reason for it (like English is easier to write in, or words flow more nicely in English). Farbeit for me to sound ethnocentric, since I'm always accusing Americans of same! I guess I just didn't expect that English was such a *big* deal in countries like Germany because why should it be? What's so great about it? That's why I asked. Sorry if I offended you. |When's the last time a world hit was in Greek? Or turkish? Or finnish? Good question. I would say this was just another failure of the (in particular, though not exclusively, American) music industry, radio, etc. in promoting or "feeding" listeners anything other than predictable hits (for the most part). It reminds of a girl I once dated. The first concert we saw was the Bulgarian Chorus (that was the first date... not highly recommended for most people :-( though I guess I learned something about her too :-), the next was Milton Nascimento. She lost interest in both because she couldn't understand the lyrics! What a shame. But that's the typical response (at least in the US). |Why did Kate record 'Ne t'enfuis pas'? Or Gabriel 'Ein deutsches album'? |Or Tom Robinson 'Tango an der wand'? Well I think those are more exceptions because their native tongues are not Fr. or Ger. |I will repeat this quote because it bothered me the most... |>why use it to |>write songs in, esp. if they're music is not available in US? |AGH! |There is a lot of brilliant music unavailable in the US. Thank God. Again, you read this opposite to the way I intended. If you're writing in English to become famous, and your music isn't even distributed to English-speaking countries, then what's the point in the first place? To what end do you do this? This was *not* a statement that music is worthless if it's not available in US. We all certainly know that's just plain WRONGO. |Now I am sure that mjm didn't mean it that way, but it sort of annoys me |that |people think this way. In Greece several artists who aren't fluent in |English, and who are very good have to decide between a) making fools of |themselves by singing in English that is totally messed up and mispronounced |and b)not compromising and never making it anywhere outside of Greece. I |assume a similar situation exists elsewhere. Exactly my point. If you're just singing in English for non-artistic reasons, it seems to detract from the quality of the art. If you can live with that, great. -mjm ======================================================================== Date: 12 Oct 93 21:47:44 EDT From: Mike Mendelson Subject: Re: nature wins out Um, that message was forwarded by me from Holly, sorry. -mjm ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 13 Oct 1993 03:31:05 -0400 (EDT) From: MIKEDEPUMPO@delphi.com Subject: sorry about the screw-up UXVvdGluZyBteXNlbGY6DQoNCiAgICA+RTFwYTJVZ1JHVlFkVzF3YncwS1FXSnZa R1U2SUV4aGJtUWdiMllnVG1Wc2JYTjBJQ2hwYmlCTllXNWphR1Z6DQogICAgPmRH VnlMQ0JEVkNrTkNrSnBjblJvWkdGNU9pQkJJR0pzWVdOcklHUmhkR1VnYVc0Z2FH bHpkRzl5ZVRvZ1FXSnkNCiAgICA+WVdoaGJTQk1hVzVqYjJ4dUlHUnBaV1FzSUhS b1pTQlVhWFJoYm1saklBMEtJQ0FnSUNBZ0lDQWdJSE5oYm1zcw0KICAgID5JRWtn ZDJGeklHSnZjbTRzSUdGdVpDQjViM1VnYUdGMlpTQjBieUJvWVhabElIbHZkWEln YVc1amIyMWxJSFJoDQogICAgPmVHVnpJSE5sYm5RZ0RRb2dJQ0FnSUNBZ0lDQWdh VzRnS0VGd2NtbHNJREUxS1EwS1UyaHZaU0JUYVhwbE9pQmwNCg0KTm93LCB5b3Ug cHJvYmFibHkgdGhpbmsgdGhhdCBteSBtZXNzYWdlIGdvdCBnYXJibGVkLiBOb3Qg c28hIFdoYXQgdGhhdCdzDQpyZWFsbHkgYWJvdXQgaXMuLi4gZXIsIHVtLC4uLiB0 aG9zZSBhcmUgdGhlIGx5cmljcyB0byB0aGUgbmV3IENvY3RlYXUgVHdpbnMNCnNv bmcuIFllYWgsIHRoYXQncyBpdCEgIA0KQnV0IHNlcmlvdXNseSwgZG9lcyBhbnlv bmUga25vdyB3aGVyZSBJIGNvdWxkIGdldCBteSBoYW5kcyBvbiBhbiBhbGJ1bQ0K YnkgTWFnbmV0aWMgRmllbGQ/IEkgZG9uJ3Qga25vdyB0aGUgdGl0bGUsIGJ1dCBp dCBoYXMgYSBzb25nIGNhbGxlZA0KIjEwMCwwMDAgRmlyZWZsaWVzIiBvbiBpdC4N ClNwZWFraW5nIG9mIHRoZSBDb2N0ZWF1cywgSSBoZWFyZCB0aGF0IHRoZXknbGwg YmUgdG91cmluZyBzb29uICh3aXRoIGENCmRydW1tZXIpIHRvIHN1cHBvcnQgdGhl aXIgbmV3IGFsYnVtLg0KDQpfX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19f X19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fXw0K ICAiTm93IEkgZ3Vlc3MgSSd2ZSBnb3R0YSB0ZWxsJ2VtICAgICAgICAgICAgICAg Li4uZnJvbSB0aGUgbGFuZCBvZiBOZWxtc3QuLi4NCiAgIHRoYXQgSSd2ZSBnb3Qg bm8gY2VyZWJlbGx1bSIgICAgICAgICAgICAgICAgIA0KsyAgICAgICAgICBUaGUg UmFtb25lcyAgICAgICAgICAgICAgICAgICAgICAgICAgICAgKioqIHxcL3xpa2Ug KioqDQpfX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19f X19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fX19fXw0KDQo= ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 13 Oct 93 08:42:28 +0100 From: Terry Partis Subject: HaPpY Birthdays Here's whishing Very HAPPY Birthdays to:- Wolfgang Drotschmann on October 13th and Brian Bloom on October 14th.
