I swear, I didn't see the posts from MJM and Dirk before I did this show. "Trouble In Mind" just popped into my head as a good song to follow "Dreams Are" and Chris bought me the Cassell Webb when he was in Los Angeles and I hadn't played anything from it yet. I haven't even listened to it yet, I just liked the way "Voices to Rivers" sounded when I did my "10 second" test. (Listening to the first and last 10 seconds of a song to see if it will mix well.) _Llano_ is my 3rd Cassell Webb CD. I also have _The Thief of Sadness_ and _Songs Of A Stranger_. They're both uneven, but there are songs that I really love. Because of the unevenness of those two, I hadn't put listening to _Llano_ at top priority. I checked out the first two songs and liked them both. "Voices To Rivers" was the second song so I played it. Now I definitely will listen to the rest of it. I really can't describe her (Dirk, can you?) but I'd recommend anything by her if you found them in a sale/cutout/used bin. Fernanda Maria is Portuguese and I love this album. I have IED (from gaffa) to thank for her. He put some songs by her on a compilation tape he made me. I was shocked when I actually found this CD. Much as I enjoy being somewhere that's dense with music I like, I'm still annoyed when I have to "guess the section" or remember that a particular shop _has_ special sections, when I'm looking for something in particular. Finding, say, "M" once, is ok, but finding it up to four times is not. (Let's see, maybe it's Indie, maybe not, maybe it's in a section for local bands, or maybe it's been put in folk.) Categories like "Indie" are especially suspect (Tower take note), because what makes something Indie is the record company and, like, for sure, I always know that :-). For one thing, it has lots of words, and many have longish histories, hence the 20 volume (!) OED. Unfortunately, most dictionaries are designed for someone who knows every word but the one being looked up. So they're not best for learning the language. A key exception is the COBILD (?sp) dictionary which, among other things, makes preposition rules easily accessible. > What is it about English that lends itself more easily to > song writing? Does have implications on prose or poetry writing? One way that languages differ is in the kinds of rhymes that are easy to form. A language with regular word endings can always find lots of "end rhymes", so it's not very interesting to do so. I wouldn't say English is better for song writing, just different. > Michael Jordan is leaving professional basketball. > You heard it here first. While we're in news mode: the UK government will end the right to silence. (If they can get it through Parliament, which they probably can, since the government is formed by the party with a majority in the Commons -- no US-style checks and balances here.) This will remove a cornerstone of the English system of justice, the presumption of innocence. How do silence and innocence connect? Well, a judge will be able to instruct a jury that they should infer guilt when a defendant fails to offer the police an explanation. -- jd ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 7 Oct 93 13:06:15 BST From: Jeff Dalton Subject: Happy in UK? > Is there anywhere in the UK I can buy Happy Rhodes music (just trying to > avoid dealing with currency conversion between here and the USA). I know of nothing *PREVENTING* Tower from importing Happy CDs should they so desire. Given what a crap shop the London Tower is (IMO), I can't imagine they would be interested. From what I read on the net about people's opinions of Tower shops in the US, I hope the one in London bears no similarity to them other than having the same name. In spite of its size, it can't hold a candle to HMV for range of stock or availability of imports. And it's so badly laid out that it's a pain shopping there. Even Virgin (which has gone downhill rather in recent years) beats Tower for me. I think it would be possible for Aural Gratification to get Happy some exposure in the UK, but it would be hard work and probably not generate a great deal of sales. At the moment Suzanne seems (quite rightly IMO) to be concentrating on North America. Probably the best way to get Happy's music available over here would be to go via a mail order importer. There's a well-known place up in Scotland (Dundee??) whose name escapes me right now, but which was suggested in these pages some months ago. I don't think the suggestion was followed up on, but a presence in their catalogue might generate a few sales out of curiosity. -- Regards Steve Fagg ( S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk +44-279-402437 ) BNR Europe Ltd., London Road, Harlow, Essex, CM17 9NA, UK *** "Better drowned than duffers. Instead of pouring the $$ into multiple separate review copies; why don't they shoot for one of the trade-type magazines. I was thinking along the lines of PULSE! since Tower seems to be a big enough chain to hit most of the locations that have Happy on the radio plus- everybody pick's up a copy of PULSE! free at Tower. If you think this is a good idea; I can call Tower for the name and address, et al. of the reviewed who took on Jane S. and Heidi Berry for the Nov. 93 issue; since that seems to be the person's taste. BTW, PULSE! is out of a Sacramento, Ca address- but the bulk of the people are physically located in Concord, Ca. What'cha think? PS I still think we should all go together and by a quarter-page add for Happy in one issue of PULSE! You can't go wrong when they only charge $700.00 {at least that's what it sounds like when you read their ad rates.} ************************** Troy J. I suggested Tower only because the Boston and a random Silicon Valley Towers were the only places I've ever seen the CDs. So Tower looked like a possibility. I think there is some similarity with the US Towers, but the Boston Tower is much better than the one in London, it seems to me. There's now an HMV in Boston (Cambridge) too, but I've been there only once. I found an Opal CD I hadn't see anywhere else for a while. The Glasgow Tower is as good as the Virgin and HMV alternatives, though the older Virgin megastore sometimes has things (e.g. Lisa Dabello) no one else has. > In spite of its size, it can't hold a candle to HMV for range of stock or > availability of imports. I thought the London Tower was ok when it first opened, and I used to be able to find things there that I couldn't at Virgin or HMV. Still, in general, I prefer Virgin to both of the others, but I'm not in London often enough to form a proper judgment. HMV may well be better than Virgin these days. -- jd ======================================================================== From: klaus@inphobos.wupper.de Date: Thu, 7 Oct 1993 06:53:20 Subject: Today's your birthday friend.... i*i*i*i*i*i *************** ***HAPPY******* ********BIRTHDAY*** ******************* *** Tim Breitkreutz *** *********************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- * New or changes made since last post Marvin Camras Sat January 1 1916 Tapehead Jeanne Schreiter Tue January 3 1967 Capricorn John Sandoval Wed January 4 1967 Capricorn Tony Garrity Mon January 8 1962 Pool of Life Greg Bossert Tue January 9 1962 OfTheTimes Troy J. There seems to be as many opinions as there are fans! I've owned _The Real Ramona_ for some time and am quite fond of it. This week I picked up _Hunkpapa_ and was a bit disappointed. It lacks the raging energy that keeps _The Real Ramona_ loaded in my CD player for days, and the "country" (for lack of a better word) feel of some of the songs turns me off. The closest thing that I personally can claim to an experience within the domain of this thread was not really an encounter in the strict sense. One day in the late 1970's, I was riding a northbound Broadway bus on which a drunk was calling out such questions, to nobody in particular, as "Whaddya think of the president?" and "Whaddya think of Big Bill the Builder?" (The latter was a reference to a popular sobriquet, during his administration, for William Hale Thompson, Chicago's Capone-friendly mayor during the 1920's.) While I felt no imminent threat, I guess I was as unnerved as anybody else by all this; so after some fast thinking, I found myself prepared to state for the record, should the necessity have arisen, that I feared for the day when Big Bill the Builder was no longer president :-).
