I just got back from a weekend in Philadelphia (my annual pilgramage to the Philly JuggleFest) and happened to stop by Tower Records on South Street. I couldn't believe what I saw. DOZENS AND DOZENS AND DOZENS of RhodeSongs and at least five copies each of EquiPoise, Ecto, and Rearmament. I didn't see any Vol. I or II, but I also wasn't searching very hard. I had never seen so many Happy CDs in a retail store at one time! Another spotting: Happy has her own "Flip card" at the Sam Goody at the Galleria Mall in White Plains, NY, with a few EquiPoise. Filed under "H" of course, not "R". -=$>Dave<$=- ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 5 Oct 93 09:42:12 PDT From: stevev@miser.uoregon.edu (Steve VanDevender) Subject: Re: The Firesign Theatre not just the size of a walnut writes: > stevev@miser.uoregon.edu (Steve VanDevender) sez: > >I would be amazed and disappointed, though, if none of you have heard of them. > > "i know! let's stand him on his head!" > > "whoa. whoooooaaaa! aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" > > *boom* > > "aw, he's no fun, he fell down." Unfortunately all they had left was standing-room-only, but that's better than nothing and I'm sure they'll sell out by the end of the week. $20. When I bought into the Labyrinth (I esp. like the last song, BTW), the guy asked me if I got tix. Last time they played in Chicago at the Vic it was general admission. I'm kind of pissed that it's reserved seating this time... if, like me, you're unable to buy tix Sat. morning, there's no way to get good ones. Also, last time you could stand right up close to the stage, I believe. I suspect that will not be the case this time. In fact, I wonder where in the Vic I will have to stand. I guess I shouldn't be complaining... at least I'll get to see them. If anyone has *extra* *good* (i.e. reserved) tix for this show, please do let me know! -mjm ======================================================================== From: "Greg O'Rear" Date: Tue, 5 Oct 1993 13:47:12 EST5EDT Subject: Re: ecto #783 anthony@xymox.apana.org.au (Anthony Horan) wrote: > ...Warner had signed two new female singer/songwriters, very much in the > Tori vein, both brilliant songwriters, reputedly. I have heard that Atlantic have signed Lea Salonga, and that she even has a single out, but the album hasn't yet been released. Lea is a great singer, though as far as I know, she doesn't write her own music (and what she does sing would not fit in here: mostly showtunes and stuff like that). Lea sang on "Miss Saigon", "Aladdin", and the new "King and I" (with Julie Andrews). Just FYI; I'm not a showtune fan, so I doubt I'll buy her album, but she is an incredible singer, whatever the choice of material. Now, if she were to come up with something in the Tori vein.... I'm too poor to really go out and buy CD's to see if I like them, but I've heard so many names pop up in here since I joined. And I actually saw some CD's with those names on 'em in stores. :) So... I was kinda wondering what these people sound like. I've already heard Happy, obviously, and Sarah M and Dead Can Dance... but what about Jane Siberry and Madder Rose and PJ Harvey and everyone else that's been mentioned in here and in RDT and in Gaffa...? :) Hmmm... maybe I should post this to those two mailing lists, too... ;) -Rob/Robbie/Wobbie ;) ======================================================================== Date: 05 Oct 93 14:31:54 EDT From: Mike Mendelson Subject: Golde Palominoes & Lori Carson In Tower yesterday I noticed a new Golden Palominoes CD which featured Lori Carson. It would be nice to invite Dr. Beth, but I don't think it would be possible for her to leave during her seal research in Orkney, so she'll have to come to Cambridge after finishing the research (that would be in the middle of November). MAKE SURE IT IS THE DUO SHOW and you will be very happy you saw them. The reason? The producer is also the drummer. He's very impressed with his ability to make loud sonds on precussions while two women are singing their hearts out in front of him. I wanted to kill that guy. ugh. After hearing about this, I discovered that Hoops is mentioned in a Gaucho song. But I've never seen anything by the Hoops McCann Band. Is it real? Also in Tower yesterday, I noticed a spanking new Police box-set: 4 Cds covering all their albums, plus all B-sides, plus some live stuff. Zowie! This is what CDs are for. It was 46.99 at Tower and I didn't buy it yet because I figured I might find it for less somewhere else, and I have other CDs I need to listen to before I buy a box set. I was very happy to see it though, since I only own one Police CD so far, and I've never heard any of the B-Sides. I went to see two concerts this weekend: Bobby "Blue" Bland, and Ottmar Leibert. The former was for sentimental reasons. My g-friend had heard this song done by Catfish and Carter, a local duo in Champaign Urbana, and she'd finally found the song on a CD ("Dreamers") by Bland: Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City. Does anyone know who wrote this song? The concert was at Buddy Guy's Legends on the south side. Quite a sociological phenom --- I've never seen so many large African American females thrusting themselves stageward and hitting each other as they did every time he opened his mouth. It was hilarious and great! Kind of like a Bruise Springsteen concert. Ottmar Leibert and his band are quite virtuosic. A friend of mine dragged me to this one. It's not quite new age, but it's darn close. I would call it "music to fall asleep by." It was nice, but I did drowse off a few times. Very adult contemporary. And very popular. The scalpers were asking us if we could sell *them* tix!!!! Does anyone have anything to say about Fripp and Sylvian? I have a couple of things by each. What are they doing together?
