Or the CD books in this age of technological achievement ;). Second, I seem to remember that afore the great departure of myself to this land of the frugal that talk was happening of a potential Eurecto fest as an addendum to the Chris Boek world tour 1993 Inc. Perhaps all those interested in such a thing (Germany, England, The Netherlands, Anywhereelse?), could make their voices heard, and maybe we can decide on a weekend and a location. I'm happy to travel (ask the USAns whether I'm used to it) but also happy to host, provided _my_ hosts are partial to the idea. Almost any weekend is fine with me, except for the last two weeks of December when I plan to travel around England, and around Easter when I plan to travel around Italy/Austria/Germany(South). Copperman Subject: a slow day It was a pretty slow Monday today. Less mail than usual from Ecto, and no interesting personal mail on my internal mail system, although an interesting voice message on the phone, which is rare, but how many times can you listen to that. So, in particularly slow moments I dug through the LA Times Calender section, discovering a special return engagement of Duran Duran with Dramarama and the Cranberries opening, David Sylvian and Robert Fripp are hitting the road, Heidi Berry is back in LA next saturday, opening for Nicolette Larson. (Heidi will be in San Diego tomorrow, in a very poorly advertised show. Almost all mentions of it say that it's the Red House Painters with some Caroline Records band that starts with an I. Barely any mention of Ms. Berry.) My lulls continued on into the afternoon, so I decided to send e-mail to the President. Our librarian had recently sent around the addresses, so I thought that might be an entertaining thing to do. Plus, I get this automatic reply from the white house to save for posterity. Thought people might find it entertaining. Oh, and if you want to write to the Prez, you can send mail to president@whitehouse.gov or vice.president@whitehouse.gov. Apparently the following House members are also on-line, although you are supposed to send them snail-mail to get their e-mail addresses. Something about wanting to be deluged only by their constituents. They are: Jay Dickey (AR-07), Sam Gejdenson (CT-02), New Gingrich (GA-06), George Miller (CA-07), Charlie Rose (NC-07), Fortney (Pete) Stark (CA-13), and Melvin Watt (NC-12). We are committed to integrating this new medium into the White House and have completed stage one of the experiment -- getting connected. It is now time for stage two, and I want to let you know what we are planning. Since June 1, 1993, the President has received more than 60,000 electronic messages. The messages have ranged from opinions on national and world events to mail for Socks. Your interest has been greatly appreciated. The second phase of our electronic mail project is about to begin. White House documents will be available on line, thus increasing the speed with which you can access information directly from the White House. We also plan to make available speeches, answers to frequently asked questions, and position papers on current issues. At your leisure, you will be able to browse through this electronic library and search for subjects that relate to your interests. These materials are presently available only through select services, but with implementation of this second phase, they will be available from one source to anyone who desires the information. We are all excited about the progress that has been made with this historic project. I know the President looks forward to a continued electronic dialogue with you, even though we are unable at this time to fully respond to your messages. Your continued support is appreciated, and I thank you for your patience as together we move ahead with this experiment. Sue considers: > I don't have ABBA soap or Duran Duran batteries, but I do have > a Camper Van Beethoven paperweight, a "Late Night With David > Letterman" sponge, and a Psychedelic Furs alarm clock. So there! :-) Ah, something familiar! I too have the CVB paperweight. Let's see, the oldest thing I have is a Monkees kerchief that I bought in Canada in 1967. (We were on our way home from Expo '67 in Montreal, and somewhere in Ontario we stopped at a department store for something or other. I begged and pleaded with my dad to buy it for me. I don't know why I still have it.) I also have a "Pound" note that was a promo for the Genesis album "Selling England By The Pound" with Peter's face where the Queen's should be. The silliest promo thing is a copy of Syd Straw's "Suprise" CD in a case that pops open and sends the CD flying across the room. The weirdest is a copy of Lava Hay's CD single for the song "Baby" that comes in an actual, honest-to-goodness disposible diaper! Also included: a yellow "caution" sign (exactly like one of those "baby on board" signs) that says "Caution, 'Baby' Playing On My Radio." Who thinks up these things? I think it would be so much fun to work in the promo department. Someone actually got paid to think up these things. Another weird one is for The Innocence Mission's song "Wonder Of Birds" - styrofoam birds. When I was setting up an interview with Karen Peris a few years ago, the woman I talked to asked me if I wanted some. I said sure and she sent me a big box full! Hundreds, literally. I've long since given most of them away, though I've kept a few for myself. It sounds as if it would be an interesting job, but I bet it doesn't pay worth a darn.
