Anthony, I'd give it a couple more listens before writing it off ... it's not one of my ultrafavorites, but I've come to like it quite a bit. "Cath Carroll" and "Six Layer Cake" are probably the songs I like the most. I don't have ABBA soap or Duran Duran batteries, but I do have a Camper Van Beethoven paperweight, a "Late Night With David Letterman" sponge, and a Psychedelic Furs alarm clock. I'm on a lowly PC clone in my living room, using a commercial service that only runs email. No FTP, no live chats, no direct access. My Genie account does not allow direct FTP but will go and get files for me if I fill out a form... Anyway, there are a few of us non-accounted types on here, all drawn by the love of music to this fuzzy blue haven. We can expect two more from Genie, Paul and Aaron, as soon as Jessica returns from vacation and processes their ecto-requests. Also, Susanne White had me type out a one page guide to getting here for the non-computertech folks, which I hope will also swell our ranks!\ Thanks again for all record store info! I know how hard it is to do this, because most stores don't have their phone numbers lying around and it can be a pain to ask for them. Still, we must do what we can! Later! Isn't most opera (please note my knowledge of the genre is lacking to say the least) written in Italian though? I had thought that this was the case, due to the pleasent sound of the language, and that opera was also much enjoyed by most Italians (sweeping generalisations abound...) This would seem to suggest that Italians don't find it particularly silly-sounding, or don't care perhaps. Or maybe opera is just considered to be something different altogether to 'normal' music... Speaking of opera, has anyone else seen the BBC's "The Vampyre" which screened here in NZ recently...? I thought it was very well done, and the words were quite hilarious in parts. (as I think they were intended) It is basically a soap-opera spoof about a vampyre who is resurrected in modern times and must seduce and kill three women in three days in order to live for another year. Is that sexist? Maybe. There was quite a lot of nudity in it, which really was unnecessary. (the male lead had at least one nude scene that I remember, so it wasn't only the women), however, if you are willing to stand that, it really was quite stylish, and as it was all in English (and hence comprehensible to me :), I was perfectly happy to sit through the entire thing (it was rather long as I remember) It was something different at any rate. (if not exactly Ecto-material) ObEcto (if a bit desperate:) : I have been reading the musician survey posts, and thought I may as well mention my complete lack of ability at playing anything at all :) (Yes, among all you talented people, there lies an utterly hopeless case) Actually, I played the violin when I was _very_ little, but I grew tired of it, and decided it wasn't for me; and after a short and horrific spell with a trumpet, I gave away all thoughts of becoming a musician :) Thus, my ability in matters tuneful extends no further than my voice accompanying my stereo, which is not saying too much I'm afraid. (I imagine I could become a passable triangle player with practice) Oh well... :) .________________________________________. ._______. | __ _ ___ _ __ __ |\________/| | | / / | / \ | \ | | | | / | _ _ | _O_ | | \_ | | | | |__/ |__| | | \_ | / \/ \ | |/ | | / | | | | | | | | | / | \ / | |\ | | \__ \_ | \_/ | | | | |__ \__ | \ / | T W W | |________________________________________| \/ |_______| \ Philip Sainty: psainty@comp.vuw.ac.nz \________/ / `-------------------------------------------------------' "This is where I want to be This is what I need" --KT ======================================================================== Date: 04 Oct 1993 08:36:18 -0400 From: pas@math.ams.org (Paula Shanks) Subject: Siberry Breaches PBS Beachhead I was watching "Ghostwriter" on PBS last night. So it looks like the Edmonton branch of the Ectohostel will be moving somewhere in the New Year after all. :) This also means I will be able to start reading Ecto again, I've been way too busy in the last couple months. Also being a student I have been pretty slow on music purchases but I did pick up a copy of Lisa Germano last week. So far I think I like it quite a lot.... I also bought the new Spirit of the West, but missed them (again.... grrr) when they played here just recently. I cheered! Oh god, I want one. I wonder if this was a one-shot deal for the show, or whether some Jane Siberry fan somewhere has made up a bunch of these? Could it be one of her tour T-shirts? If I could make a Jane Siberry T-shirt, the first thing that comes to mind would be a "Mimi on the Beach" T-shirt with really great surreal art on it depicting something about the song. Perhaps I will have to learn to make T-shirts and get an art education. ======================================================================== Date: 04 Oct 93 12:29:47 EDT From: Mike Mendelson Subject: germany Uli wrote a very complete response to my question about german english singers. I had absolutely *no* idea that English was *so* well known in Germany (or other Eur. countries), and esp. that, as Uli put it, to be big in Germany you must sing in English. I find this a fascinating social phenomenon (and also somewhat ironic considering English's mostly Germanic roots -- full circle?). Is this caused mostly by America's influence? I would sure guess so. Or is it because most of the music from this genre originated in English-speaking countries? However, the most bizarre thing about it (for me at least) is that they're not even singing in German to be accepted in *other* countries... which they well could be, were the music good and exported; but rather, to be accepted in *their* *own* country. Americans are admittedly grossly ethocentric, but with so much of the world trying so hard to "americanize" (warning: this may be a complete misrepresentation and I'm sure I'll be corrected if it is), there's no motivation for Americans to become more cosmopolitan in their views and tastes. Is this true of Asian music as well? Indian? Middle-Eastern? Or is it a uniquely European phenomenon? -mjm ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 04 Oct 93 11:47:01 CST From: kiri Subject: eat the music well i finally found the single... can't really add anything new, eat the music is ok for the first minute - i like the lyrics... Hmmm. Ever heard of a small offshore island in Europe called Britain? An island where a country called England is. From where English got its name and where that language is still spoken. Ever consider that that might have something to do with the interest in English as a foreign language within Germany? Quite a lot of pop music has come out of England over the years (and most artists from Scotland, Ireland, & Wales perform in English too) and in European terms the UK is quite an important market. Don't be so quick to take the blame (or perhaps you see it as taking the credit) on behalf of your fellow Americans. The tour T-shirt is yellow lettering on a black background, with remindful things on both front and back and "Everything Reminds Me of My Dog" and "Jane Siberry World Tour" on the front in smaller letters crowded between and to the side of two of the remindful things.
