Turns out it tastes exactly like Hawaiian Punch, despite having only orange, pineapple and pear mixed in with the inert ingredients--unlike the panoply of fruits in the HP I either knew or loved (I forget which :-) ) as a child. To add insult to injury, the stuff has only 8% juice, down from the 10% that most sugar-and-water concoctions profess to have. At least it wasn't fuzzy as well as blue, which would have implied life-forms growing in it, or worse. I agree that the possible Antikate (more unambiguously known as Joe Henry's sister-in-law, the Pupic Princess of Pontiac) has looked prettier in the past, though I have enjoyed, and continue to enjoy some (in no sense all) of her music. I haven't seen the book, of course, but on the basis of the newspaper photo of the last week in which she bears the greatest vestigial resemblance to Anais Nin, I think she looks far less like a dominatrix in those duds than like your stereotypical Bavarian beer hall waitress. Off the top of my head, if any woman in rock has written the book on the archetypical dominatrix look, it's Wendy O. Williams of the Plasmatics--quite a different woman musically, if I do say so myself. For all that, I do find it mildly disturbing, as one whose mouth is overloaded with porcelain and high noble metal, that she would display such a cavalier attitude about the sacrifice of perfectly good tooth enamel for the dubious cosmetic effect of having a front tooth capped in gold. I wonder if Graeme Revell, if indeed he did do the score for _Dead Calm_, also wrote what ought to be that film's signature tune, and to have won that year's academy award for best song, solely on the strength of its title, "Who Stole the Isopropyl Alcohol?" Rose in Chicago sells the Flanders and Swann box set for 40-some dollars during the holiday season, not all the time--as I was informed when I tried to make it one of the first entries in my nascent CD collection. It's only available as an import, which probably explains away both the intermittent stocking and the price. Whichever store Jeff saw it in is probably padding the price. Now that the Blue Jays have finally brought the world championship to the world , it has occurred to me after reading recent postings that they have one more thing to aspire to besides actually winning the Series in the nation-state wher e the inning isn't over until the last man is oot :-). Specifically, what bett er goal than to have "O Canada" sung by the likes of Jane, Sarah, Loreena, k.d. , and the rest, as distinct from these frequently obscure characters who actu- ally did the honors for the past week. A band of 11 musicians (vocals, keyboard, bass, drums, 2 on guitar, 2 on saxophone and 3 on percussion). Martin, you would have loved it, and I guessed that even before you mentioned it. The premiere of my recording walkman was not very successful. Talk about being behind on digests... The talk of Viya Con Dios was ages ago and I'd shelved my reply because I didn't want to resurrect the topic, but Klaus saved the day and gave me an excuse. :) I've heard two of their albums (in Germany, surprise surprise) and I think they're Belgian. It's good stuff, if very European-sounding (like, I thought it was 70s music but was wrong). It's been a while since I've heard it, so I can't be more specific than that, but I was surprised to see them mentioned here! Klaus sez: }Justin about ISBNs on CDs: }> number; check digit (modulo 11, with X = 10).) I have never }> seen a sound recording with an ISBN before, except for things }> like talking books which are sold in bookstores... it's very }> odd that Pamela Golden's CD has one! }I've seen a Star Trek soundtrack CD (or was it a compilation }from the soundtracks of all ST movies?) that had an ISBN. That's }the only one I know of. Huh? Every CD I own has an ISBN on it. Or am I thinking of the wrong thing? The little bar-code thingie that they scan at the register. Or is that a uniquely American phenomenon? }> (Providing, of course, the restaurant serves Spaten Weiss) }Please let me know: is it something to drink or to eat? :) You _must_ be joking. Spaten is the Brauerei, and Weiss is short for Weissbier- but *NOT* the Berliner kind, as Mitch mentioned! }I always assumed it was something to drink, specifically, a }variety of wheat beer (as in Berliner Weiss, usw.). I would }surmise off the top of my head that Meredith, in making the }original reference to the stuff, actually meant_Spaeten_ Weiss, }which would translate literally as "late wheat," but which }probably means either that it was aged longer than usual, or is }brewed late in the season, or comes from low in the barrels, }near the sedimentation (cf.the phenomenon of Bock beer, which }may or not be a going concern outside the Midwest). Bzzzzzt. Thank you for playing- but thanks for the laugh! ;) Berliner Weiss is just beer with weird stuff in it. Weissbier comes from "Weizen", or wheat, and somehow the word evolved to look like it's saying "white beer" instead of "wheat beer". The truly unique thing about it is that it's not been filtered, so the yeast bits are still floating in it. (I wonder if it really is from the bottom? Dunno...) It has to be served in bottles, in special glasses that are fluted on the very bottom. You pour three-fourths of the bottle into the glass, then swish the remainder around to get all the yeast off the bottom. Then you pour the rest of it in, and yum! It doesn't taste like your normal beer at all- sweet instead of bitter. My best friend, who retches at the mere thought of beer, actually likes this stuff. And much to my joy, it can be found stateside if you know where to look for it! :) :) :) IDEAL!!! Wow. There's a band I never expected to hear about over in these three time zones. They're so campy, they're great. Their best songs are "Berlin" and "Blaue Augen". :) I'm glad the members of the group are still around! And Shona Laing is still around, too... "Soviet Snow" is my all time favorite song from 1988. :) Peacock Palace: I like this CD a lot. It's not a masterful piece of art, but the songs are fun. "My Suitcase" is rather moving, though. The lyrics border on cheesy and pat at times and it's easy to draw Rainbirds comparisons... but I listen to it often. Danke, Klaus! :) Well, this is long enough...more archaeology later! :) ============================================================================= Meredith Tarr m.tarr1@genie.geis.com America can't survive another four years... fight the idiocy on November 3rd ============================================================================= ======================================================================== Date: 27-OCT-1992 19:50:36.53 From: MTARR@eagle.wesleyan.edu Subject: Ecto archaeology, part two Hi! Nuno sez: } Probably, Madonna would wish to be as talented as Anais Nin. } Anais Nin was the daughter of Joaquin Nin, a famous Spanish } composer-pianist. Um, well, _Delta Of Venus_ seemed plenty erotic to me when I read it, but I may just have fragile sensibilities. :} } Madonna with that look pretends to portray, possibly, } one of the characters, Dita, in her album, some sort of a } dominatrix. I don't understand how our friend on the list } made an association of Dita with Anais Nin. Anais didn't look } nothing like that and I don't see the possible relation of } Anais Nin with a dominatrix. Well, Angelos was referring to Madonna's look in the MTV interview. Judging from what parts of Nin's diaries I've read, a possible relation of Nin with a dominatrix wouldn't seem too out of line... but the notion of Madonna having any clue as to who Anais Nin is is unthinkable to me. :) Angelos notes: }I really don't know what the *real* Anais Nin looked like... Maria De Madeiros, who portrayed Anais Nin in _Henry And June_, looked remarkably like the real Anais Nin. IMO DeMadeiros is prettier, but the resemblance is striking. Something about her vocal style, I }guess. It's only that one song that makes me think of }Tori though. Weird. That song alone, though, may be worth the }price of the album. That urged me to put the album in my player, and you're right. I LOVE that song. It's a very good album, but the fact that Gabriel's backup band plays throughout just bleeds through constantly. I like this album a lot. I know a few seconds ago I just posted some Ecto Archaeology of my own regarding this subject, but hey. Beer is good. Most especially Weissbier!!! Mitch crossposts: }Spaten Weiss is indeed a wheat beer, actually made with a }barley/ white mix. Weiss beers are also very yeasty, with the }best ones having a yeast setiment in the beer. They are a }speciality of Bavaria, and Spaten is one of the "big seven" }breweries in Munich. Spaten is not, however, the best Weiss }Bier (or Weizen). I'd recommend Franziskaner, Erdinger, or }Schneider. For what it's worth, Franziskaner is also a Spaten Bier- my sister managed to procure a case of same in New Haven a year ago, and I still have two bottles, which I'm hoarding for a VERY special occasion. :) By far the best Weissbier I ever had in Germany was Erdinger- it's a brewery in Erding, just outside of Munich, that makes nothing but Weissbier. That's what was served in the pub in the building where I lived, and what was stocked in the fridge on my floor. Good stuff, yum. :d I now return you to your regularly scheduled talk of music and- what's her name? Oh yeah. I wonder if she's ever talked about how she was abused, and by whom. Just as Tori talks about rape, Sinead could focus attention on her abuse, and get people to talk about it. Everybody's always so vague. Peter, for instance. You get the idea from the Dirt video that he was abused as a child, but has he ever actually talked about it? I admire Toni Childs for always being so upfront about her abuse, but I don't know of any other musicians who have talked about childhood psychological, emotional or sexual abuse. Does anyone? On last night's episode of _Hearts Afire_, there was a sequence toward the end in which the protagonists, who are both Senatorial assistants, steal away from a party to go to the office and get some work done. After they get it done, they end up in a tryst on the office floor, just as a TV crew is filming in the architectural-landmark office suite. (We only see the crew in the outer office, and the trysters in the inner office; never do the twain meet on camera.) The important thing is that under this sequence, the soundtrack features Bonnie Raitt's song "Something to Talk About," with the lyric "Let's give them something to talk about" coinciding with the tryst in the inner office while the crew outside draws nearer. Having seen this example of real pop music used to score a TV show in this manner, I got to wondering how Happy's music could be so employed. The only hypothetical example that came to mind was if the next episode of _Hearts Afire_ started in the inner office, on the proverbial morning after the night before, and the action opened to the strains of "Waking Up." Anyone got other ideas of how Happy's discography could serve as incidental music for the small screen? While queued at the customer service desk at Kroch's and Brentano's earlier today, I had the opportunity to look over the shoulders of a couple of people perusing Madonna's new coffee-table book. Maybe it's just me, but I found it pleasant enough looking at face value--but still not worth the suggested retail price. Maybe if enough people hang loose on actually buying the thing, it will soon make it into the bargain book section.
