I didn't see her, nor did I notice the mention of her in Roeper's column (my reading whereof was fairly cursory anyway). She would have made, IMHO WIVH, a superior musical accompanist to the actual live one amidst all the canned music, _viz._, Michael Bolton, who mercifully missed his gig at the beginning of the rally, and so only sang at the end. (The Sun-Times seemed to offer varying perspectives on this: Sneed implied something out of place in the fact that he was scheduled to sing two songs and only sang one; but Kup explained that he missed his ride to the rally from the Secret Service, and by the time he arrived the crowd was so thick that he was unable to get to the stage through the wall of human flesh in time to perform at the front end.) On the other hand, had Laurie A. performed, would the line from "O Superman," "they're American planes--made in America" been interpreted as a call for trade protectionism? Would "Let X Equal X" be seized on by the opposition as an expression of tolerance for un-American (by the Pat Buchanan definition, anyway) porno, and a wimping-out by Tipper and the Mothers of Prevention? Then again, could they have caught it from partisans of the other extreme, who might have taken "Language Is A Virus" as an assertion that there's no such thing as safe phone sex, even with a condom on the receiver? It would seem there are latent dysfunctions to everything. :-(' :-) Actually, outside of the tiny and distant image of Bill C. himself, my most profound memory of seeing anyone at the rally was the woman in front of me with the NARAL sign and the Louise Slaughter for Congress button on her backpack. Fortunately, I was close enough to be able to ask where this unfam- iliar race was occurring (Rochester, NY). GETTING REAL FOR ONCE: Methinks we need a definitive opinion: Is the HBP deadline November 1, as was stated once or twice before, or December 1, as was stated in the latest posting? I wrote a letter to Greg B., which I haven't mailed yet, stating the November deadline. Need I rewrite the letter now, or what? Words of consolation for Angelos: 100% mortality or no, yours lived the longes t of any of them. That ought to count for something. The consensus among the Chicago critics is that Madonna's book contains nothing that you can't get in Penthouse for 1/10th the price (notwithstanding the free Erotica CD inside, which the critics also say contains nothing in the way of musical innovation). My personal response has been to hang loose, in the hope that if enough others do the same, the tome may make it to the Bargain Book section within our lifetimes. The Jays have lost the chance to take the series at home, but the upside is that this will give them a goal to aspire to for seasons to come. It is a well-known shibboleth among pop psychologists everywhere that having it all at too early an age (the franchise only dates back to 1977) is dysfunctional. :-) Needless to say, equal time on this issue is Valerie's for the asking. I don't recall the titles of any of her books except the multivolume _Diaries_. Her relationship with Henry (_Tropic of Cancer_) Miller was treated in the film _Henry and June_. IMHO WIVH, Maria de Madeiros playing Nin in the film looked better than Madonna playing her, or even than the real Nin herself. On a whim, I ran my assumptions on what Spa(e)ten Weiss was by the alt.beer newsgroup. Turns out I was wrong. For all our benefit and use, I am pleased to share the corrections I received from a.b readers. Thanx, Scott and Wayne! Mitch ================================================== Spaten Weiss is indeed a wheat beer, actually made with a barley/white mix. Weiss beers are also very yeasty, with the best ones having a yeast setiment in the beer. They are a speciality of Bavaria, and Spaten is one of the " big seven" breweries in Munich. Spaten is not, however, the best Weiss Bier (or Weizen). I'd recommend Franziskaner, Erdinger, or Schneider. Hacker-Pschorr is also a good Weissbier. There are some American imitations, but their Weiss beers do not at all compare with the German ones. You should be able to get imported Weissbier, and I recommend it highly. -- Scott > Spaten (not Spaeten) is a very famous Munich brewery, one that practically invented modern scientific brewing of lagers. Spaten means 'spade' (i.e., the farm implement) - I forget the significance of the name, but it's reported in "The World Guide to Beer," by Michael Jackson. It is definitely strange, especially if you had the (mis)fortune to see her live doing her "own" material. I am very happy about the Until the End of the World connection, since I loved the music there, and I guess I will have to dig to find SPK/Revell recordings! According to the booklet on the Mute Records sampler they have a few. BTW, Alan, it was _Blood of Eden_ you heard in UTEOTW. The third track in _US_. Beautiful song. This is what Sinead said in an interview in the german FACHBLATT magazine issue 11/92: "I was abused as a child. And I blame the Catholic church for that. It is to blame for the abuse of so many children in the western countries and forY the British marching in my country and slaughtering 70 percent of the population. The strict Catholic education made the people in our country lose contact with their inner worth. The Catholic church taught them to respect superficial worth. This left its mark on my mother and my father and their parents. And therefore children like me were abused. Therefore Ireland is holding the record in child abuse, alcoholism, drug abuse, incest and rape. The Catholic church has no relation to God. I believe, it's representing the evil. It is the enemy of God. It has built up a world based on an essential lie. It was the Roman Empire that killed Jesus Christ. Then they have written the Bible with intent to spread the lie that the Jews have killed Jesus what isn't true. On this foundation they legitimated the killing of Jews. The Catholic church is responsible for the murder of Jews during World War II. It has kept its mouth shut, it has permitted all this." And she said that Peter Gabriel is one of her best friends. She met him when she was really down and he was the first one who understood what was wrong with her, because he was going through the same difficult crisis. She isn't quite familiar with his music, she just knows SO. There are other interviews with Peter Gabriel and Roger Waters. Peter began working on US *before* he made Passion and continued the work in 1990. I just wanted to let all of you who know me, and those who keep such information, that I have a new address: Tim Breitkreutz, #407, 10950 - 82 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada T6G 2R9 My phone number is still the same at (403) 439-4439. My shoe size is also still the same at 10.5, although I have been thinking of changing to 11 :) If any ectophiles are passing through this neck of the woods be sure to look me up! I just got a package from AG last week, and Canada Post has started charging a $5.00 fee for collecting the GST (Goods and Services Tax, the Canadian Value Added Tax), and they also charged me duty. Do any Canadian ectophiles know if there is any way I can get any of this money back since I obviously can't buy these in Canada? I think the $5.00 fee is a crime too. And compounding on this is that one CD was missing, so if I were to get AG to send it, I'd have to pay the duty, GST, and $5.00 all over again :( :( :( So, instead, I called and I now have a pre-order for More Paint! I wonder if I am the first one.... Kevin said that it would probably be February 1st! I can't wait! Also I have a friend who is looking for an album by Saint Preux called "le Piano sur le Mer" or something like that. Does anybody out there know where such a thing could be found? Thanks!
