The coalition, upset that the Irish singer ripped up a picture of Pope john Paul II during an appearance on "Saturday Night Live," will donate $10 to charity on behalf of anyone who sends in one of her records, cassettes or compact discs. The group represents 66 ethnic orginizations across the country. Its chairman, Bill Fugazy (!) said the money will be sent to the registered charity of the record donor's choice. The records can be sent to: NECO, 555 Madison Ave., 12th Floor, New York, NY 10022 ----------------------------------------------------------------- If the above doesn't appear in the Sinead list, perhaps an Ectophile who is also on JITR will pass it along. Does anyone have a stash of Sinead interviews with an index? I'd be very interested in reading what she said about being abused as a child. (Someone, perhaps it was in rec.music.misc, said that Sinead has said in interviews that she was abused as a child and blamed the Catholic church for it. If it was here I read that, sorry about being brain-damaged and forgetting.) I sent Sinead's name to the keeper of the ASAR-FAQ (along with Toni Childs) and he wanted more details, if they were available. (This was for the section "Famous people who have been abused") Thanks in advance, if anyone can help. I'd write directly to JITR, but I don't subscribe and I wouldn't see an answer unless they e-mailed it too. Date: Thu, 08 Oct 92 23:51:58 -0400 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu It's amazing how the music you grab to stuff in the walkman can impact the things you're seeing around you. A few months ago, I was heading off to visit a friend at work, and grabbed a Sarah McLachlan compilation. The place of work was Arlington National Cemetery, and as my friend was somewhat busy, I had plenty of time to ride my bike around the grounds, listening to my tape. Arlington Cemetery is a disturbing place--row upon row of crosses filling entire fields, graves of various Kennedys and other notables, and it's quite sobering. It was made even more so listening to songs like "Home," "Lost," and "Shelter." Except with "Shelter," I wasn't thinking about the little furry animals in their cages as Sarah intended , but of all the dead people in their coffins--"They're crowded into the smallest spaces / outside all of nature cries." What brought that incident to mind, though, and inspired me to write this evening, was the selection of tapes I happened to take with me today as I headed down to the Mall to fly some kites (am I predictable or what?!). Selections included a tape with _Warpaint_ on one side and HoL on the other, my Rhodes Volume I tape, and _99.9 F^o_. What hadn't really clicked with me (though I'd thought of the possibility that there'd be *some* folks there) was that volunteers with/for the Names Project would be swarming around the Washingotn Monument grounds (best spot in DC for kite flying), preparing for this weekend's AIDS Memorial Quilt display--the first time in 3 years that the entire quilt, now over 21,000 panels, has been displayed. I saw a lot of panels being aired out, and a lot of people working diligently to help pull this event off. And I knew that a lot of these people had lost friends, family, loved ones to AIDS. And the music in my ears became so much more poignant. "Oh the Drears." "Given In." "Step Inside" ("Easily frightened? Step inside!") "In Hiding." "Running Up That Hill (Deal With God)". "Blood Makes Noise." "Blood Sings." "Words Weren't Made for Cowards." "I Have A Heart." Flying my kites, bringing a bit of cheer into the sky, helping refocus gazes from what would soon enough fill the ground for a shockingly large area. I got more friendly comments today about my kites than I usually receive in an entire month. And oh, the wonderful, moving music that filled in the spaces around me... NOW I AM PISSED OFF!!! So, freedom of speach involves the equivalent of book burning? Buck a song? Heck, a quarter for each picture of hers, and a hundred bucks per videotape of her concerts, plus a bonus $1000 for each of her interviews... What is wrong with people? Vickie, I have 4 Sinead interviews which are in the hands of Aidan and Liz (HI!) and I will xerox them and mail them to you after I come back to Boston. One of them (the one in the Amnesty special issue of spin) talks about child abuse quite a lot. Anyway, we were having this discussion about the incident, and apparently she wore the star of David in relation to the rastafarian aspect of her performance. Anybody more knowledgeable about the beliefs of rastas please elaborate. Sinead is anti-hate, and is expressing her hatred towards organized religion, and not the people who are religious. She attacked the Roman Catholic church but not Roman catholics (she is one herself). And I doubt there was any intention to stir up anti-semitic sentiments. Maybe they should try to catch her and burn her and get it over with...:( Angelos 'OU EST LE ROI PERDU?' ======================================================================== From: S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk Subject: Re: Sinead & stuff Date: Fri, 9 Oct 92 11:26:53 BST On Thu, 8 Oct 92 at 23:42:37 EDT, Ode wrote: > The National Ethnic Coalition of Orginizations has put a $10 bounty on > Sinead O'Connor albums. This reminds me of the bonfires of Beatles albums and merchandising organised after John remarked in an inetrview that the group was probably more popular with a lot of young people than Jesus Christ. Personally, I find it difficult to see what (apart from personal notoriety) Sinead hoped to achieve through her actions. I find the views of the current Pontiff on several subjects offensive (birth control, abortion, and homosexuality in particular) and his power to mould the moral views of millions worldwide dangerous, but I don't see that ripping up a picture of him on television contributes to anything other than letting us know that Sinead doesn't like the Pope. If Sinead has some specific point of view to express about the Papacy, or John Paul II personally, I think she'd be much better off trying to do so through her music. If it was all just a publicity stunt then I find it in extremely poor taste. -- Regards Steve Fagg ( S.L.Fagg@bnr.co.uk +44-279-402437 ) BNR Europe Ltd., London Road, Harlow, Essex, CM17 9NA, UK *** "Better drowned than duffers. So what's the difference between book-burning and picture-ripping-up. What does the bible say about an eye for an eye? (Yes I know that's old testament.) What the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations is doing is no more outrageous, and will (I expect) offend far fewer people, than what Sinead did.
