I've been fairly silent lately, cause this grad school business changes my definition of "free time", and as a result, I don't have any "free time" by regular people's definition. Regarding Sinead's fashion statement wearing a star of david while ripping a picture of the pope to shreads: I feel it's a pity that she did that - and I interpret it slightly differently from the messages I've read up to digest 342. I feel that she's so ashamed of being a part of the catholic church (I'm assuming that she's catholic, because as we all know, the Republic of Ireland is 99 and 44/100% pure, both racially and religiously), that she needs a "symbol" to hide behind, and seems to associate judiasm as the "anti-catholic" symbol, which she can use to fight her 'cause' whatever it may be. But alas, if she starts prepetuating anti-catholic sentiments as a "wanna-be Jew", she'll definitely not improve relations between people who strongly relate to EITHER of the two religions. In fact, I think the fashion statement has defeated her purpose. But that's only me view... So sue me. So has anyone had a chance to compare the American version of Bel Canto's Shimmering, Warm and Bright to either of the European ones? I'm especially curious to know if "Keena Mareene" is included on the disc. Keena Mareene is a beautiful song which is only on the GERMAN version of the UNICORN CD5 (it is NOT on the French version, as Justin can attest to). I am worried that there will be no way to get that song anymore, unless Elektra decides to re-release the german version of the CD5, which is doubtful. Anyway, here's a poem I thought I'd post... Just Once July 24, 1992 by SAE Just once in my life, it all happened just once, everything was fine My dream and my reality became one and I took you with me, through the fair. We touched the sky, and drank the air just once I see the world with different eyes I know what's possible, and can set my sights But I'm older and wiser, and full of fear and sometimes wonder why I'm here things are OK, but not quite perfect I find no pleasure from anything less than the feeling I attained just once But if I can feel it again, what happens then? Can I make it last forever? How strongly are we driven? What's the source? If I find my own piece of heaven, will life then lose all its force? I'll never know for sure, for I have a premonition that I will spend the rest of my life, forever seeking that feeling I had just once. -- | S. At least, that's what I remember from my cursory reading this morning. Speaking of which: didn't Boy George (remember he?) used to wear a Star of David, or some other Judaic icon? Yesterday's Sun-Times ran a brief story about Juliana Hatfield, in which it is brought out that she has just signed with Atlantic, and will be performing in Chicago on Saturday, at Cabaret Metro. She said, among other things, that her angst-ridden lyrics get that part of her personality out of her system, so that she doesn't have to act that way in real life; and that if she had a firmer sense of what she was trying to put across, she wouldn't have to argue as much with her handlers, imagemakers, etc. I finally listened to the new Suzanne Vega CD over the weekend (just hours afte r sleeping through most of the video of Peter Gabriel's "Digging in the Dirt" on Friday Night Videos). I think it has more in common musically with her earlier albums than some others have implied in these pages. Some of the accompaniment is, indeed, more electronic than before; but much of the rest is as wonderfully acoustic as ever. This morning's music feature on NPR was on Brian Eno's new album, the vignettes from which sounded good enough that I might just buy the thing. Overall, it's not bad - certainly I like it more than days of open hand. However, there's one song which literally hit me on the head with a hammer. It's so good, and so frightening, all at the same time... "Bad Wisdom" - I don't even remember what was written on this list about the song before, since I didn't hear the album and didn't have anything to relate the messages to, but christ! They should put a "Parental Advisory" sticker for explicit lyrics for this song! It's so good, it should be banned. She sings so peacefully, strumming her guitar in that pensive, moody, etherial way, and sings a melody which could be an irish love song, but the words just cut like a knife. It's people like her that make me realize I'll never be "real" poet, but just a poeseur (sorry about that pun, guys!). Anyway, if you haven't heard the song yet, lie, cheat and steal to hear it... It's so amazing and important and crucial. I won't even talk about the rest of the album, since I think the song deserves a message devoted entirely to it. Hats off to you, Suzanne Vega! -- | S. This is another example for the statement that a crowd of brilliant studio musicians (Jeff Beck, Steve Lukather, Patrick Leonard) are not always guarantors for a brilliant album. There a too many sound effects and much too dense arrangements (never ending background choirs, etc.). I find BTD (sorry, ATD) much better than The Pros And Cons Of Hitch Hiking but not as good as Radio K.A.O.S. Vickie about the Humpe sisters: > Klaus knows more about them than I do, but I assume that they > aren't making music together anymore. :-( The last thing I heard was that Anete Humpe is producing other groups, like Die Prinzen. Suffice it to say that a best-of sampler of Ideal has just been released. But I think that the Humpe-Humpe or Swimming With Sharks stuff cannot be compared to Ideal. Ideal made New Wave music. They came up in the early eighties and were one of the forerunners of the so-called New German Wave. Dozens of new groups have been founded to make primitive music with meaningless german lyrics (with the exception of Ideal, Grauzone, Einsturzende Neubauten, Fehlfarben and some others). The record companies were to blame for the sell out of this kind of music because they made contracts with nearly each of the new groups. Most of the bands have disappeared after one or two years. The Humpe sister made pure pop music. Vickie wrote: > An extremely long time ago, on a system far, far away, Dirk wrote this: Far, far away? You mean the physical distance in miles or km. Does PG sing on the album version? According to the Peter Gabriel discography from Markus Boie: Tom Robinson Band. TRB Two (LP), released January 1979. 'Bully For You' was co-written by Gabriel and Robinson, and was also released as a single. Tom Robinson. North By Northwest (LP), released August 1982. Gabriel and Robinson co-wrote 'Merrily Up On High', and 'Atmospherics (Listen to the Radio)'.
