May all your days be filled with the Happyness you deserve. May all your dreams come true. Welcome Mark Carroll!! Jeanne, have a good time in Seattle. It's so beautiful up there. It's one of the 3 or 4 cities in the country that I'd love to live in. Please come back to us soon. Kiri, I hope you have/had a good time in Montreal, and Court, have a good time wherever you wander in Closer-To-Kate-Than-I-Am-Land. I heard back from the License Plates fellow. Yes, it was a joke, but yes, he's also into Happy. Just not a mailing list type. He was pleased that I got such a kick out of his post. How does one go about > getting a music store to carry a label they hadn't before? Since Big State is supposedly handling Warpaint in the southwest, the record store should contact them. It wouldn't hurt to give AG's address as a backup anyway though. Steve V, you wanted to know about how to get Happy played on the radio. The best way is to call and chat with the program director, get them interested and get his/her name. Write Kevin with the details and the PD's name and when their CD situation is looser, he'll send one along. Keep track, and when you know for sure the station has a copy, request songs like crazy. Tell your friends! Bribe them, if necessary :-) The first time I talked to Happy after I first heard Warpaint, I remarked that she was sure to be compared with Sarah McLachlan. Happy said "who?" and I've still never gotten around to sending her any Sarah. It's not so much that they sound alike, but there are similarities (a la H & Kate) that are sure to get them thrown into the same whatchamawhat'sthis? box. New Guy Mark (howya doing? Ladyslipper has an application form a mile long and requires a promo copy to see if it fits their criteria for distribution. I *hope* it all works out, that's one place where Happy should be carried, no matter what the terms. Kevin said he would send a promo, and I'm hoping that it will get passed around and played often and loud in the Ladyslipper offices, until someone says "why don't we have about a thousand of these in the warehouse?" or something similar. C&K, you'll have to go back sometime, preferably in the spring or fall. The last trip Chris and I took together to the East, we drove up to Niagra Falls, then across New York State, then through the last 3 mainland states I'd never been in, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine (ok, so we went a bit out of our way to catch the southern tip of Maine, but I had to a) go there to say that I'd now been in all of the lower 48 states and b) visit Ogunquit [Stephen King fans will know why]) and while we were in New Haampshaar we stayed in a lovely country inn, with separate cabins complete with comfy, cosy beds with about a million pillows and hand-made quilts and fireplaces in the rooms and a real home-cooked country breakfast made by the lady who owned the place. We all acknowledge the importance of vocals in the mix. We all bemoan the lack of vocal stylists who are uniquely our own. Happily (no pun intended) we have artists like Happy Rhodes, whose latest release Warpaint lands squarely in the PAC camp. Vocal comparisons to Kate Bush, Annie Lennox, Joni Mitchell, and Laurie Anderson will abound. While Happy's voice at times is reminiscent of the aforementioned, she is clearly her own woman; and along with co-producer Kevin Bartlett, have a production style uniquely theirs. Happy's arrangements deliver a freshness throughout. There are a lot of ways to go with this record, I suggest "Waking Up", "Feed The Fire" and "Murder". There are sonically interesting and unique. Honestly, I like the songs of alienation the best...check out "All Things" and "Wrong Century"...they seem like perfect afternoon drive songs. Give them to your listeners after a stressed out day at the office while they fight the commute home. It's not an aggressive sound musically, but the lyrics seem fitting after a day of having your head in the corporate blender. Anyway, spend some time and have some fun with this one. Happy Rhodes is uniquely ours. I predict this one will make the phones ring. Harry, what sign are you/do you want to be? For now, I put you down as "NiceGuy" which you certainly are. Stephen, I really will try to get some thoughts together on Happy's belief system. It's hard for me, because I don't really agree with her on a lot of things, so we've never talked much about it. I know she believes in reincarnation (though she told me that "Wrong Century" is *not* based on a belief that she's the reincarnation of an Indian man, even though she's part Cherokee Indian herself). She reads a *lot* of philosophical books. Actually, I guess Chris would be the best one to talk about this, because I really did fall asleep when they were uh.. arguing/discussing Happy's beliefs. Chris would like her to "see reality" whereas I could care less what Happy believes. If she has worked out a belief system that suits her, that makes her happy, then that's fine with me. It's none of my business, and who am I to even think about trying to change her mind about anything? I know she believes that a person's spirit lives on after death, and it's a nice thought, so I certainly respect her believing that. As far as digging up articles, she doesn't really talk about the songs that much. At this point, all the articles and interviews would fit into an LP sleeve, that's how few there are. Stephen, if there's something specific you're wondering about, I could ask her the next time I talk to her. I'd be interested in hearing your views, and what it is that you hear in the lyrics. At least in Ecto, you know you won't get flamed for anything you say :-) I'm sorry I'm not much help here. Hopefully we can piece together some of the information you're looking for. Subject: Re: Seeking Titles, Authors, Albums To Access Deep Feeling and he wrote back asking for more information. I told him all about Happy's lyrics, but it's not really what he is looking for. He's not interested in vocal music, which is a shame. Kiri's been in a Rearmament thrall, I've been in a Vol.I thrall (again :-) and I keep playing it over and over again. I still find it amazing how I never ever get tired of any of the albums, even though I've listened to them hundreds (gee, probably thousands by now :-) of times. I may go through phases where I listen to very little Happy, but in the past few months, since Warpaint came out, I haven't gone more than a couple of days without listening to something by her. It's mind-boggling. I still haven't figured out what it is that keeps her music from becoming boring to me. It's a variety of factors, all the wonderful things combined (voice, music, lyrics, emotions) but it's more than that. Call it "magic" and be done with it, I suppose. I certainly can't explain it any better. Stephen, I know exactly what you mean when you say that Warpaint is addictive. All of them are for me. I thought it was interesting that you said you listened to WP 4 times through. Very few people would listen to an album more than once, and rarely more than twice. I could easily listen to Warpaint or any of the others 4 times through, and hardly notice. For me it's strange, because my music collection is so big. Just in *female* vocals, I have over 800 albums, and over 400 CDs, yet I'm more than willing to just listen to Happy or Kate or Jane (though I haven't listened to Jane in a couple of weeks) all the time. Favorites wreak havoc with fair Play. I don't mind. Actually, today has been somewhat unusual. I've been listening to a bunch of tapes that my friend Sue in Kansas City made me. I haven't had the money to go out and get new things and, since I don't work at Rose Records anymore, I don't get the promos I used to :-( so she's taping all *kinds* of things for me. The latest batch includes Toni Childs' new (well, it's been out for a while) album, which I like much better than her first, which I also liked. Also, Heidi Berry, who is very interesting, but a bit more conventional than I would have expected for the first solo female artist to have a record released by 4AD. I haven't listened to it enough to be able to "review" it properly, but I do like it quite a bit. Also, she sent along Ricki Lee Jone's new one, which is cute. The Miranda Sex Garden (what a *stupid* name!!) 12" extended mixes, lots of strange Nina Hagen rarities, and various tracks from compilations are also on the tapes she sent. The thing I've fallen in love with most is an album called _Nordisk Sang_, which is an album of traditional Norwegian music. It's truly beautiful! Very simple and majestic and wonderful. All the songs are sung by a woman named Kirsten Braten-Berg, except for a couple sung by a woman named Pernille Anker. Lovely voices, accompainied by flutes and fiddles. If anyone is familiar with the album _Rosensfole_ by Jan Garbarek and Agnes Buen Garnas, this is somewhat similar, except that it doesn't have the modern percussion Garbarek added to the songs. This is true traditional music from Norway, and it is truly fine. Klaus and Meredith, you might be interested in, or already know about this. One of the songs Sue added was a track from an album called FM Einheit's _Stein_, and the song is called "Educacao" with Katharina Franck on vocals. For those unfamiliar with Katharina, she sings lead with a group called The Rainbirds. I have to say, as much as I like The Rainbirds, I like this one track better than anything I've heard by them. So, who is FM Einheit? Or is his name Einheit Stein and the album called _FM_? It's hard to make out. She xeroxed the CD booklet for me, but it's all in German (I assume, that's what it looks like) so it's confusing for me to make out what's what on here. Any info anyone? I'm going to ask Sue if the whole album is as good as this song. She only included the one song because she knew I liked Katherina. Rainbirds trivia: I have a record company promo video with 3 videos, one by Michelle Shocked, one by All About Eve and one by "The Rainbows" which is, of course, The Rainbirds. No wonder they never went anywhere in this country, if their own record company don't even know what their name is! :-) What a stupid mistake for the company (Polygram) to make. I think the focus was on Michelle Shocked, because All About Eve never made it over here either. Too bad. I'm not crazy about them, but I quite like many of their songs. Well, goodnight all... Visions, green things, maybe even life domes and cradles and forests, candle strife too short it is the endless flow Only when the dawn treader calls will we all, but know. -jbns (the on the spot kind of writing) ======================================================================== Date: 30 October 1991 13:38:39 CST From: Subject: Stoff an die Zitat wie das Musik der Froehliche-Rhodes (oder etwas) At the end of his recent posting, Klaus solicited translations of the German-language encomium to Happy's music, which appeared at the end of the laundry list of such things _auf Englisch_ :-). I may have been able to figure it out, _mirabile dictu_ (we at Ecto still believe in linguistic ecumenism, as of the last time I looked :-) ), with only a nominal amount of frenzied looking through the library's two-volume edition of Langenscheidt's dictionary needed, as fate would have it (or so we hope), to fill in the lacunae in my rusty high school German. Herewith, without further ado, what I think the last reviewer on the list was driving at: "WARPAINT is undoubtedly one of the fantasy-provoking (or fantasy-stimulating) albums that can lead the listener to unimagined creativity by the construction of quotations." (As I write this, I have just gotten an incoming ecto posting from Chip Lueck. If I've just been scooped on an attempt at translation, I don't know it yet, because I've assiduously avoided reading the aforesaid incoming note until I've posted this one :-).) I know that people in the learned professions have often been accused of saturating their writing with so-called "German Syntax." This, however, may well be over the top :-), with such neologisms as "the construction of quota- tions." On second thought, however, that is not such a bad description of Happy's approach to lyric-writing after all, given that we all seem to find her lyrics so quotable. On the other hand, the careless dictionary user could just as easily take "ungeahnte Kreativitaet" to mean _unrealized_ creativity. On the one hand, if this means that Happy's most productive career phase is yet to come, we can be comfortable with it. On the other hand, if it means she is alleged not to be working up to her full current creative potentia l, perhaps we should wonder about where this particular reviewer is coming from (other than Central Europe, obviously :-). Given the large amount of passing-around of Happy's recordings that I read about in these pages, such a translation ("owner," as opposed to "listener") would tend to underestimate the size of Happy's actual audience. At least, we hope it would. Mitch ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 30 Oct 91 15:12:33 CDT From: "Chip Lueck (Jeff)" Subject: Translation... Well, Mitch, I have to say that Gregory Bossert's translation blows ours away! We obviously don't have quite the handle on deutsch that he does. :) I guess I'll have to bring a German dictionary to work to put in my desk for the next test Klaus gives us! So Klaus, what is your translation? Three more ideas for licensed (or unlicensed) Happy Rhodes merchandise: 1) The DeepSweep (tm) line of vacuum cleaners, marketable through Highland Superstores, Sears Brand Central, or similar outlets. 2) The Cranium Keep carrying device, a sort of fanny pack which could be worn on the head for added security, perhaps designed sort of like a bicycle helmet. There are many places such a thing could be sold: sporting goods outlets, boutiques, etc. 3) Most grandiose, and arguably most outlandish: The H.A.P. Box, which would bring together in one system numerous implements for bedside entertainment. The exact array of components would vary from model to model; but the center- piece of each would be an alarm clock-like device which, at the set time, would play the recording of "Waking Up." The fail-safe feature of the alarm: if one didn't shut it off (having presumably woken up) after a reasonable interval following this gentle stimulus, it would try something stronger: it would switch to playing Paula Abdul's "Promise of a New Day" :-).
