There is a stupendous bookstore (Wordsworth), the above mentioned record stores, a bunch o' brick buildings stuffed full of academics, HOURS of fun. 4) boston. meaning, downtown boston -- it is a small but pretty city. many people consider it "european" in style, which is to say, the stores, offices, and residencial areas are all mixed up, and the streets don't go in straight lines. there are many historical sights, some of which are even interesting, a couple of major art museums, etc. 5) winter isn't really the best time for it, but you may want to take a drive out into the countryside. New Hampshire and Vermont, the states to our north, are really beautiful. one idea is to spend a night in a old new england style country inn -- i could probably get a recommendation for one... > Question for Ectophiles in Boston: what is your favourite radio station? > Which one to listen to, and how to get it? WFNX, sometimes voted best alternative station in the US, and often spit at by the real alternative types (i.e. the college stations), is the one i listen to most often (i *rarely* listen to the radio!) it is 101.7 FM, and can be picked up in the immediate boston area -- their transmitter is not very powerful, though, so reception is sometimes iffy... 'FNX plays a lot of good music. they have so far refused to play _Warpaint_ ;-{ 8-[ but they do play KaTe fairly often... the M.I.T. radio station, WMBR, is a fairly representitive US college station. i get bored pretty quickly by the amount of generic soft- thrash trendily-untrendy music they play, but they *do* play music that no commercial station would touch -- and i am forever in their debt for telling me that "Ever So Lonely" is by Monsoon -- that song haunted me for *years*! 'MBR is 88.1 FM, i think... Carroll" Date: Mon, 28 Oct 91 14:37:55 -0500 Hi folks... I'm a new guy around here, so I'll introduce myself. My name is Mark Carroll, I'm a doctoral student in CIS at the University of Delaware. I first heard Happy about 2 weeks ago, when I found a _Warpaint_ CD at the local record shop. (Here in Newark, we actually have an independent record store, which carries all sorts of unknown labels.) I picked it up, because I had seen Jessica's recommendation of it on the net, and I know that she's got good taste in music. Needless to say, I was utterly amazed at what I heard. _Warpaint_ is a wonderful work, and I'll be ordering the rest of Happy's music as soon as I have a working tape deck. Anyway - last week, a couple of people mentioned hearing Happy on the radio on some Philadelphia radio station. Here in Delaware, all we get is Philly radio, and it seems pretty dismal - all either top-40, or continually recycled "classic rock". (I basically like the type of thing that they call "classic rock" - I just can't stand to hear nothing but the same records, over and over and over... every day, every year, forever.) So, I'm trying to find out - is there actually a radio station in Philly that plays decent, new music? A station that would actually play an artist like Happy, who has no contract, and no real distribution net, and unlike most of todays "musicians" actually has a lot of talent? It goes to every single city in the country. It's a sort of a "young people"s station but damn good... they play darn near anything you could think of. And totally commercial free and uncensored (government sponsored). Don't know why I hadn't thought of getting Happy on JJJ before... They'd play her, I know they would ... they've got really open minded DJ's. Imagine that... Happy all over Australia. 12 million or so people. Hoo wee. I tried drumming along to a few tracks off Warpaint and Ecto today... ...didn't sound all that bad either... maybe that dance tape isn't a totally crazy notion. :-) My dad won't give my Vol1/Vol2 tape back. This week, Morrison selects Happy Rhodes: Warpaint (Aural Gratification). One of the most exhilarating experiences for a radio programmer occurs when, in the complete absence of hype, a piece of music by an unknown artist on a small label receives enthusiastic audience response. Explosive is the only way to describe the WXPN audience's reaction to "Feed the Fire", a song by Albany's Happy Rhodes that's been "Top-5-phones" at 'XPN for close to two months. Rhodes works with partner Kevin Bartlett in their own studio. He handles the business of promotion and distribution. She writes and sings. Both play, mostly synthesizers and electronic percussion with a bit of guitar here and there. Happy's best songs (and there are quite a few on "Warpaint", her fifth album) display a thorough understanding of harmonic tools and absolute control over their execution. Electronic music can be harsh and cold. Buth the sounds of Rhodes and Bartlett are lush and multicolored. Drum machines are creatively programmed to enhance the melodies and their inherent rhythms. And those melodies ... just listen to the lead cut "Waking Up". This is top-flight songwriting, complex, but at the same time totally natural. "In Hiding" is at the other end of the spectrum: sparse but majestic in its simplicity. Those who've heard her music have likened Happy Rhodes to Kate Bush. A cursory listen will reveal the reason. They both paint from the same sonic palette and their voices are similar (though Rhodes's is deeper and a bit more soulful). The irony is that at probably one fiftieth the budget, Rhodes and Bartlett's work comes frighteningly close to the sophistication of Bush's most recent albums. With "Warpaint", Happy Rhodes proves that big-label money isn't necessarily required to make well-produced, high-quality music. _____ Klaus Kluge --- kkluge@Materna.DE --- I'll be here, I'll be (in) Ecto! ======================================================================== Subject: WXPN, ARTISTS ANALYSIS Date: Tue, 29 Oct 91 09:49:10 N From: Klaus Kluge W X P N Most Frequently Played Artists Analysis ======================================================================== From: 9/16/91!
