In the alternate, you could analyze this whole phenomeno n in terms of the "opinion leader" model from the book _Personal Infuence_, possibly winning the right to call yourself the Queen of Cats and Lazarsfeld :-) in the process. So for consistency David Blank's sign should be Virgo. Without a birthday I'll let Jorn pick his only sign. Second, in penance for botching his name last month, I note that Martin's last name is Dougiamas. At least, that's what's in his sig. Finally, the missing Zodiac sign for June is Gemini. Contacts: Thomas A. Johnson tj@cs.ucla.edu Daniel A. Segel daniels@xstor.com DepthGauge 2.5.3 Unveiled Today. New Version of Popular Pixel-Depth Switching Utility goes EctoWare. Menlo Park, California; Los Angeles, California--October 22, 1991--The highly awaited upgrade to DepthGauge, the popular depth-switching utility for the Apple Macintosh was released today to an enthusiastic response. Bored with the rather stagnant shareware market, the authors decided to attempt to create a brand new software category: "EctoWare". Both authors are devoted fans of a singer-songwriter from Albany, New York named Happy Rhodes. The talented Ms. Rhodes has five albums available on the independent Aural Gratification label. Where ShareWare authors ask users of their software for a payment directly to them in cash (or some other commodity) the authors of DepthGauge are asking users to purchase a copy of one of Ms. Rhodes' albums for themselves. "Our goal is to increase the base of Happy Rhodes fans, worldwide", said Tom Johnson, one of the two talented programmers who created DepthGauge. "She has an incredible voice, and writes truly beautiful songs, but since she doesn't fall into any easily recognizable category of music, she hasn't yet attracted the attention of the major record labels". "DepthGauge is a quality product which has attracted many imitators," added Daniel Segel. "We feel we not only have the best product available, but that we offer the most for your money. Where else do you get a useful piece of software and a compact disc for only $15.99? Even if you don't use DepthGauge, you should purchase a Happy Rhodes album, and treat yourself to some beautiful music". DepthGauge Advantages In addition to this unique payment system, DepthGauge has many advantages over the many imitators it has spawned. Many of it's competitors suffer from memory loss: every time they are used they waste a small amount of the system memory. Use one of them enough times, and the Macintosh will crash. DepthGauge offers better compatibility with various third-party video hardware, and offers a visual pixel-depth indicator in the menu bar. System Requirements DepthGauge requires Color QuickDraw and System 6.0.5 or later. It is fully System 7.0 compatible. Balloon help, 32 bit addressing, and virtual memory are supported. Pricing and Ordering Information Interested parties may fulfill their payment obligation by writing directly to Aural Gratification at the following address: Happy Rhodes EctoWare Payment c/o Aural Gratification P.O. Box 8658 Academy Station Albany, NY 12208 The first four albums ("Rhodes Vol 1", "Rhodes Vol 2", "Rearmament", "Ecto") are only available on cassette. "Warpaint", her latest stunning release, is available on both cassette and compact disc. The CD is $13.99 and the tapes are $9.99 each. Postage for the CD is $2.00, postage for one tape is $1.50, and $0.35 for each additional tape. New York state residents must include the appropriate sales tax. Checks should be made out to "Aural Gratification". Neither Segel nor Johnson receive any financial considerations from the sale of Happy Rhodes cassettes and compact discs, they claim to be purely interested in the creation of Happy Rhodes fans everywhere. Sorry, if it should appear a 2nd time. ----- here it it -------------------------------------------------------- The "sagaminidoo" BVs of "Terra Incognita" sounded very familiar to me from the very first time I heard it, and this weekend I did some research on this matter. The result is, that it sounds _very_ much like the song "Sheba", sung by Maggie Riley on Mike Oldfield's "QE2" album, which was released in 1980. It's not BVs, but the main voice. A whole song with 'lyrics' of this kind. Also, it doesn't only have one line, but some variations of it. Unfortunately the album doesn't have a lyrics sheet. :-( :-) If someone has this album at hand, give that song a listen and let me know what you think about it. "sana-nana-raga-gannamu" ! Well, I can't speak for David Blank or Jorn, but my reference was to a song called "The Existential Blues" by Tom 'T-Bone' Stankus (I've never seen his name spelled), released in the late Seventies (I think). The song takes the _Wizard of Oz_ and mind warps it two or three times in a sixties psychedelic sense. The music is simply Tom talking, occasionally singing, over his hamfisted guitar style. 'Tis hilarious. By the way, Martin, don't let any one in the Smiley Conspiracy get to you. I'll add you to the list. Are you (guessing here) Michelle Young? Doug, I'm not too worried about the birthday list being accurate re Astrology signs, just days and years (Jorn? :-) As a matter of fact, I've changed my sign from "Leo" to "Giddy" since it's more accurate for me :-). I don't believe in Astrology but I have no problems with anyone who does. Those who chose not to give their signs probably don't believe in it either. Let them be whatever they want, no problem. I will add the Gemini though, unless said Gemini wishes to be something else. More Doug...I don't think I said this, in case I didn't...THANK YOU for typing in and posting the Desiderata and Detereorata (sp? I don't have them in front of me cause the screen is) and I wanted to tell you that I really, really enjoyed them. Happy did too! I read them to her over the phone and she thought they were great! Can you believe she'd never heard either of them? Kevin & I were lamenting about how old she made us feel by not knowing either version. Doug, she liked your idea that Ode was her own personal Desiderata. I spent lots of time on the phone with her the other night. I mentioned that there was another flame war in gaffa that I was in the thick of, and she asked me details. I ended up going back to the beginning and reading Jorn and Richard and Cynthia's orginal posts, plus most of the responses that came after. She was fascinated. My feeling that Richard's "Sensual Suspension in Gaffa" post was cynical and scornful was shared by Happy. She didn't quite agree with Jorn either, but she could see where he was coming from. She'd love to get on gaffa, she would have been right in the thick of things too :-) I told her that if she ever did get on gaffa, she'd better use a false name...preferably one that couldn't easily be screwed around with, like "Jornie" or "Vicks" :-) Vickie katefans@chinet.chi.il.us ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 22 Oct 91 19:58 CDT From: vickie@chinet.chi.il.us (Vickie Ann Mapes) Subject: Gaffa going I can handle, but Ecto? KTCZ in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis-St. Paul) area have put Happy into medium roatation, so the response there is getting better. The CDs are delayed, because of Guns & Roses and Michael Jackson. All the major CD pressing plants in the country are being tied up. Pooh! H&K have a mere 75 CDs left, so they're doling them out like gold, since it will be at least another month, if not more, before any CD plant can even begin to start working on Warpaint. Individual orders should be taken care of with no problems. They heard from Ladyslipper, and got a form letter that detailed Ladyslipper's terms, but Kevin said they were very weird terms. They may not go for Ladyslipper after all, but I hope it works out, it's such a perfect place to carry Happy. Happy's backup gig was a disaster, it's a good thing no one went. H&K's car died and Happy, who was all dressed up, had to push it to the side of the road by herself and then walk home to arrange another ride. The gig itself was short and uneventful, but Happy said she was standing right next to a woman who sang off-key every now and then. The audience was unreceptive and they only got a smattering of applause. DIDN'T THESE PEOPLE KNOW THEY WERE IN THE PRESENCE OF THE HOLY GHOST??!!?? I guess not :-) Got that off my chest!
