It doesn't really sound much like Latin to me. I've been listening to _Warpaint_ over and over and over again. Wow, what a way to cap off my Happy Rhodes collection. The polished, rythmic, sparse-yet-complex sound really agrees with me, and I'm almost afraid to listen to her earlier albums for fear that they won't sound as good any more. I was a little snappish at work Friday--all I wanted to do was listen to _Warpaint_ and type at my computer. "Phobos" is coming on again. How I love this song. I can't even put the things I like about it into words yet. When I listen to "In Hiding", I think it could apply equally well to either Kate Bush or Happy Rhodes. In fact, it almost makes more sense to me if it refers to Kate--it sounds more like a Kate song with the solo piano accompaniment, it describes the way that Kate tends to hide away and is somewhat at odds with Happy's passionately honest approach. Happy's letter that came with the CD said "I hope you enjoy Warpaint," and if any of you talk to her soon you can tell her that I really do. ======================================================================== Subject: Terra Incognita Date: Fri, 11 Oct 91 09:43:51 N From: Klaus Kluge Happy, through Vickie, had excellent news: > drive. Brian, I hope you find White-Out Conditions on sale sometime and give it another chance. Maybe you won't like it as much as BOP, but it really is a very good album and deserves another listen. I guess the main reason I like it so much is that the synthisizers are not as "garish" as they seem to be to me on BOP, that's why I always say that WOC is the album that will stand as a timeless "classic" and won't sound so dated in years to come. Of course, I love the songs too, and her voice is so eerie and beautiful. "Capio" is one of the most hauntingly ethereal songs I know, but it's got streaks of weirdness too. The song "Agassiz" is lots of fun, in a weird sort of way. The song "White-Out Conditions" evokes for me the disorientation of a blinding snowstorm, among other things. I had been watching ZDF, one of our TV stations, and saw that Happy was playing hand-ball in a german team. I don't remember anything about the game, just that Happy was playing. After that she was interviewed, and at the end she was singing a song, one I haven't heard before. I know it was good, but that's about all I remember. In my dream I saw it on a video recording, so I wanted to play it again to catch some details, but I woke up before the game started. Well, I had been doing video dubbings that day, so I can understand where that came from. But I definitely don't watch sports, and I have no connection to hand-ball, except that I know it exists. So, is Happy really playing hand-ball? Right now I can tell how familiar I am with an album by which song goes through my head after I stop listening to it--if it's a new, unfamiliar album, the last song I listened to goes through my head; if it's a very familiar album, the _next_ song goes through my head, since the track ordering on the tape gets deeply engraved in my brain after a while. ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 14 Oct 91 14:43:03 EDT From: jessica Subject: Re: In trouble again :-) About Kevin's music: I've listened to some of it, (some of "Breadfeet" and "7") and i like it *very* much - it's nothing similar to Happy of course, it's just music - well, ok occasional use of english words, but not really lyrics :) I like the way he chooses sounds and blends them together to create a certain feel, and I find many of the songs to be quite humorous, really.
