Copperman Subject: Re: D'Cuckoo ordering info I was thinking of saying something about Mondo 2000 today, and Neil's post is all the egging I needed. THey did have a great D'Cuckoo interview, and I'd been curious about the band ever since then. I thought that since they were from San Francisco they might get down to Southern California, but it looks like that doesn't happen. What I was going to say is that I just got the new Mondo in the mail yesterday, and the preview of the next one looks like Mondo's Ecto issue. Kate Bush, the Cocteau Twins, Neil Gaiman of Sandman fame. This probably won't be out til around March, so maybe I should have held off on this teaser. They also promise an interview with Rush Limbaugh by Xandor Koslowski, who is a paranoid, conspiracy theorist maniac, which should be interesting. A few issues ago they had an interview with U2's the Edge. To make it a bit more interesting, they sneakily had some of the guys from Negativeland (who have essentially been ruined for illicit sampling of U2 and Casey Kasem) hanging around, so that they could work their way into the discussion with Edge. It was pretty interesting. Mondo's the only magazine I subscribe to these days, and not everyones cup of tea, but it sounds like the next issue would be a great introduction for people. Neal Happy Thanksgiving to everyone who isn't offended by the idea. ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 24 Nov 93 14:57:25 CST From: Riot nrrrd Subject: If it's not one thing, it's another Kafkaesquely, Monday night my grounds became the site of the third third-rate burglary attempt in as many weeks. This time, however, the security hardware installed after the last time prevented the perp from making off with anything. For all that, I was forced to take yesterday off from the net to wait on a re- pairman who was to fix something the perp broke in the process of escaping, but the office gave him (the repairman, not the perp) the wrong address. So it goe s. Apparently the quickie introduction to an unfamiliar person scared off my feline foster children, because they're apparently hiding out at a remote site somewhere. By this morning, however, one of them had returned to the fold, so it's quite possible the rest may follow. A couple of things I forgot to mention the other day: In addition to cancellin g Stuart Rosenberg, WBEZ has cancelled _Echoes_, the only place on Chicago radi o besides WCBR to have actually played Happy. And Saturday night, _Saturday Night Live was hosted by Nicole Kidman, who did a good sendup of her husband's now-famous underwear dance in Risky Business. Based on that, I wonder how she would have fared playing Lestat? :-) Now that I'm back on schedule, if only briefly: Kudos to Jeff for his competi- tive triumph in kiteflying. And kudos to Holly for her panache at explicating the Persephone legend. It takes something like this to make one realize that classical mythology loses something in translation into _Wonder Woman_. By coincidence, at this moment NPR is running an interview with Garrison Keillor about his new book _The Book of Guys_, and he's recounting "The Midlife Crisis of Dionysus," into which classical myth doesn't lose anything in translation. Actually, I would most have liked to see the Greco-Roman pantheon done in the style of the Olympia Cafe sketch in the golden age of SNL, with John Belushi in the role of Zeus, and "No ambrosia--cheeseburger" as the premier aphorism :-). (Maybe in the present context, it would more appropriately be "No pomegranate-- cheeseburger.") Holly ended her essay with the following comment on the box-tub dichotomy: >"Would you eat them in a box? >Would you eat them with a fox?" ======================================================================== WRT someone's query about raves in Chicago, it's my understanding that the Smar t Bar at Cabaret Metro (3730 N. Clark between Waveland and Grace) has them, but I have no definitive info on whether they'll be open over the Turkey Day long weekend. Dunno why, but the discussion of Sea Nympf evokes images of the comic strip _Popeye_. The discussion of the etymology of the title _Aion_ by DCD reminded me that not too many years ago, a couple of Chicago-based insurance companies merged under the name Aon. How many of the teeming millions will realize that this was in- tended to make the company seem benevolent and eternal is anyone's guess, esp- ecially if one's coverage has just been dropped, the premium jacked up, or othe r typical insurance company behavior :-). Happy birthday+1 to Doctor Who, which premiered 30 years ago yesterday. _The Simpsons_ apparently did a spoof of Garrison Keillor last week. GK says he didn't see it. Off to get the cats some turkey cat food for Thanksgiving, and catch the 5:00 show at the Music Box. If you're in Chicago over the long weekend, feel free to call (312-375-9758), though I'm likely to be in and out. Whatever you do, take the time this holiday to work on your HGP contribution. Mitch ======================================================================== From: C. Boek Subject: England Here I Come Date: Wed, 24 Nov 93 23:02:00 MET Attention all Anglophiles (does that mean something else ??) I will be visiting England in about three or four weeks time. If you come from England, and will be around then, and would be interested in meeting a funloving, witty, intelligent, sexy, PC, greenie, politically minded, religious, Yuppie, Fashionable person, then ... I dunno ... go to a nightclub or something. If, however, you want to meet _me_, then please send me some email and tell me where you are. I certainly want to meet _you_. I like meeting people, especially ectophiles, which is something that I now have a little experience in. If you are prepared to be an ecto-hostel then that will be an added bonus, but I want to visit anyway! Current plans include London, Cambridge, West Sussex and Bath. This is not exclusive. It's still quite clusive .... Sorry. I look forward to hearing from you. Chris. ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 24 Nov 93 14:40:31 PST From: dixon@physics.berkeley.edu (David Dixon) Subject: Re: D'Cuckoo ordering info > Anyone know how their name is pronounced, btw? I'm assuming > "duh-cuckoo" with a brief "d" but it could be "dee-cuckoo" or > something for all I know! I've always heard it pronounced "duh-cuckoo". BTW, there are two D'Cuckoo songs on the "Saved from Obscurity" tape I'm enclosing with Oblique Strategies orders, and I'm submitting one D'Cuckoo piece in my HGP submission. As Angelos and I have said, they're *excellent* live. They do go up and down the West Coast from time to time. The only concert dates I'm aware of now are all in the Bay Area, though. I hope their new album, "Umoja," will break them nationally, so you guys can all get to see them. Oh, yeah, the MidiBall.. they also have a toy called the MidiBall. You have probably seen (or been at) concerts where the crowd tosses big beach balls around? Well, the D'Cuckoids have taken a beachball, put motion sensors connected to a transmitter. When the ball is hit, the transmitter transmits a signal, which is picked up by a receiver onstage, which sends it as a MIDI signal to a synthesizer, which then plays a note/sample/whatever. For some reason, the version of the MidiBall they have now only sends one signal; an earlier version had piezoelectric pads all around the outside of the ball, and each one sent a different signal. Probably broke down a lot, I imagine, with all that knocking about. For the new D'Cuckoo listener, I'd strongly recommend getting their eponymous CD before "Umoja". It's poppier and more accessible than the new one. The new one's got some outstanding production on it, though. BTW, D'Cuckoo's new record label, RGB records, is at the same mailing address as "Music from the Hearts of Space". Stephen Hill even did some engineering on the new album. Date: Wed, 24 Nov 1993 17:01:56 -0600 (CST) I have one question, Mitch... Where exactly is it that you live? These burglaries don't sound too fun, and I think I'd like to avoid moving into your area when my lease is up... *hug* good luck, though. have a happy Turkey day, and enjoy a good laugh at me, who is spending Tgiving in "sunny" Florida, in a torrential downpour, after mocking everyone I know who had to stay in Chicago while I got to go to the beach Kath ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 24 Nov 93 17:34:57 PST From: Neal R. Copperman Subject: bay area info Hey ectoids in the bay area. I definitely plan to get up there sometime in the next year. Neal ======================================================================== From: klaus@inphobos.wupper.de Date: Wed, 24 Nov 1993 22:05:00 Subject: a message from Klaus which is not a birthday list :) To prevent rumours that I have vagabonded into a sunny email-free region of this (or any other) planet while my computer sends out birthday cakes, I'm breaking the silence although I'm still a month behind reading my ecto digests. Still, there are some noteworthy topics which I better write down now. Let me start with the all time favourite ecto topic: it has been snowing over here. If I hadn't noticed from the dramatic drop in temperature, snow covered Wuppertal would have been a perfect indicator that winter has arrived. Though the recent EctoParty is history already, here are some more notes: - Thanks to everybody who made it to Wuppertal! It wouldn't have been such a nice party without you! :) - Thanks to Dirk for calling! - Our fuzzy blue drink recepies will be at the end of this message. - Holly on IRC? My fault: At one time I saw Holly on #Ecto with the nick Holly, so I added that to my notify list. Now we've learned that she uses the nick Hollis, and someone else is using Holly. The other Holly visited IRC while we where on, but never entered #Ecto. We just were notified that nick Holly was on the system. - The EctoAlbum is our collection of Happy and Ecto paraphernalia, predominantly pictures of and by Ectophiles. - Our signed card for Happy is en route to Bearsville, accompanied by a picture of all guests. Now that we've also seen the second german leg of Peter Gabriels tour (and missed Christo at the venue), I must add that it was well worth seeing it again, especially since we had a perfect view of the stage. As we hardly saw anything last time, we can't compare how much from the visual part of the show has changed. I must say that I was disappointed to find out that Joy Askew had been replaced by a keyboard player who didn't sing and a singer. I had the impression that they played less old songs and more from US. Do we have any new records? You bet! ;) We finally have the new albums from Sarah McLachlan, Heidi Berry and Tribe. Excellent albums!!! ** Claudia here. Sorry 'bout that, but I just have to come in here. The new Sarah is ABSOLUTELY HYPNOTISING! On first listen I was at the same time very excited and almost moved to tears (sometimes). Probably her best!! ** Another album I have to mention is the new release from Andreas Vollenweider, which is called "Eolian Minstrel". Highly recommended, and not only because of the part Happy might have played in it. As mentioned before, this is his first album of "real songs" with lyrics. He's now performing with folk singer Eliza Gilkyson who also plays acoustic guitar. In fact she also wrote most of the lyrics. One track has Carly Simon singing. Let me finish with a miniKlaus, commenting on !very! old messages: brni> and don't stop at red lights! Well, that's a bit too simple, isn't it? That's more or less what I did (I call it orange) and I ended up with a fine and a month without my driving license. Vickie> The Sheila Chandra Interview (Raw version) Thanks for the transcript, Vickie! While reading it, Claudia called because Sheila was on TV in a WOMAD special. Uli wrote: > I didn't believe my eyes when I saw the subject > Wo gibt es was von den "Happy Rhodes"? > on the German newsgroup de.rec.music.misc. Thanks to Uli we saw a couple of messages about Happy on this local newsgroup. Kindly Uli offered to provide sampler tapes and I think he sent out a couple of them. As I also wrote up a german "how to get albums by Happy" which included me as a possible source, I was subsequently able to sell 4 of her albums. Thanks to all the people who answered my request about the Sarah T-Shirts. I've also asked Nettwerk for a description, and the response limited my choice, as the Solace-T is no longer available. I've now ordered "Medusa". Isn't winter a great time to order T-Shirts? :) >>> Shivvvvvver<<< (Claudia) Alright, back to answering some email. ...Klaus. ----- our fuzzy blue drinks ----- Good, relatively blue and partially fuzzy (or sometimes rather fizzy) drinks (Yes!!
