Okay, okay, I *know* that "TZ" is a standard UNIX environment variable, but how was I to know that me setting TZ to "EST-10EDT" for some dodgy Amiga world time clock program's amusement would throw this unix-originated Sendmail into convulsions of either putting the year 1342 on all mail, or otherwise bumping all times by exactly 2 hours...? :-\ :-) Anthother plug for the now-even-more-professional read-only Margot Smith mailing list - just mail me to be added, and those of you reading in Australia, have you bought the album yet? :-) Neile says about Mae Moore's "Bohemia"; > It's interesting that they use a different picture on the cover--There's > a switch. There's a coolness/tragic quality about >>And then Michael responded: >>Brad Pitt is playing Lewis. As for John Malkovich, he's a great >>actor, but a little too old for Lestat. Being a huge fan of the Vampire series, I feel compelled to sound off: The name in question here is *Louis*, not Lewis. The reason this bothers me at all is that Louis is a French character, and I am also a fan of the French language. It disturbs me a bit to hear his name pronounced "Lewis", but to see it spelled that way...Well, just don't, okay? :) [This is NOT in any way intended as a flame, just a gentle indicator of my feelings.] So anyway, someone else asks why so many of us are upset about the casting of Tom Cruise. Well, speaking for myself only, it's because he doesn't have the same type of personality as Lestat. Perhaps at this point you may wish to interject "but Sam, being an actor means having several different personalities", to which I would reply in anticipation "but [insert your name here], I haven't seen Mr. Cruise perform ANY part that would make me feel as though he were capable of taking on the role of Lestat." I don't think he's a terrible actor, but I don't much enjoy his performances. I find him rather, well, um, limp. He's just not MY choice for Lestat. Unfortunately, Daniel Day-Lewis is. This is most unfortunate, since he was originally said to have the role, but had to drop out to film "In The Name of The Father" (the trailer for which looks really good). To add to my sour grapes, I now hear that Christian Slater is set to play the Interviewer. Huh? Who's casting this thing? Did anybody read the book? I thought River Phoenix was perfect, but we know what happened there, don't we? I was very sorry to hear about his death. I don't know what drove him to the point he reached, but I wish it could have been avoided. (I hope that doesn't sound like selfishness, i.e. "I wish he could have lived to have done this film", because that's not the spirit in which it was intended.) Christian Slater, IMO, is nothing more than a young Jack Nicholson. And we already have one of those, so I wish we could move on. So there you have it. I do not agree with these casting choices. But will I see the movie? You betcha! I think Neil Jordan is brilliant, and I looove Stephen Rea, so there are two strong points in favor. I also appreciate Brad Pitt quite a bit (gee, that rhymes!). So I'm hoping that the film is somewhere between really really good and wonderful. How worried am I about Tom Cruise? Not very. After all, if I remember correctly, this particular book is more about Louis' adventure than about Lestat's, n'est-ce pas? Well, that's enough from me. Glad to see so many Anne Rice fans on this list. -Sam ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 23 Nov 93 10:27:28 PST From: Neal R. Copperman Subject: Over the Rhine Hey, I bought Over the Rhine's "patience" yesterday too. IT's a beautifully packaged CD, and they gave me a set of nice cards with the same types of pictures and info on the band and quotes by Rilke and stuff on the back. Of course, I haven't listend to it, but I bought it at about 1115 last night, just before I walked out of the show and promptly walked 25 minutes in the wrong direction. How anyone finds there way around UCSD is a miracle to me. Almost every time I go there I get lost. It's stupendous to be lost there on a bicycle in the dark with a good light, but less fun on a rainy night after standing around for 4 hours. Anyway, I was at the Squeeze/Over the Rhine show. I thought OtR was pretty good. They didn't wow me, but were entertaining and it seemed the disc would have potential. Sometimes the music sounded too much like a lot of other whispy voiced female vocalists, without a spirit of it's own, but maybe the disc will help get rid of that feeling. There were a number of good songs, but no knockouts. The woman's voice sounded like a cross between Edie Brickel and The Sundays. The music was a bit harder edged, with lots of prominant guitar, that kind of reminded me of dada ("Dizz Knee Land). Squeeze, of course was great. If you like the songs you know, you'll like the show. They are crowd pleasers, playing almost everything off SIngles 45 and under, as well as popular songs after that and a bunch of new songs. The crowd actually liked the songs from the new album. It's nice when they don't get bored and start talking, waiting for something they know. Seems to me that Squeeze has been sorely neglected the last number of years, with radio just playing their classics and ignoring their newer stuff, which also sounded great live. (I have to plead guilty to more or less ignoring them too, having not bought a Squeeze album for years.) An entertaining and fun show.
