Not an easy task.) We wouldn't shoot you, but yeah, no kidding, it's tough. The *next* poll should be top 5 from each album. I have mixed tapes and > I don't recognize many of the songs mentioned by you-all. It's good to > hear more about HR and less about KB. IMHO. :-) (sounds like gaffa a couple of years ago) The thing is, Ecto was born from Love-Hounds/rec.music.gaffa and a large number of subscribers did come here via Kate's group. I don't read what you wrote as a flame at *all* but I just thought I'd use you as a springboard to gently remind Ectophiles that Happytalk was flamed off of gaffa, and it would be a shame if it did get to a point where Katetalk were flamed here. As with any other thread that isn't interesting to any specific reader, Katetalk can be skipped over. Awhile back, Drewcifer, in an obviously bad mood :-), wrote about taking the SF talk to e-mail. I started a reply, but as with so many things I start to write, I got knocked off-line and just never went back to retrieve and finish it. It was still in the outgoing file so I went to get it. Sorry to beat a dead horse (ugh, what an awful saying!) but here it is: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From: WretchAwry To: Tree of Schnopia Cc: ecto@ns1.rutgers.edu Loves: Kate Bush..Happy Rhodes..Jane Siberry..Peter Gabriel..Tori Amos.. Yeah, it eats up bandwidth; yeah, it's annoying to page through if > you're not part of it; but, yeah, it's Ecto. As everyone has reminded me, > side-threads are what Ecto is all about. I was very suprised to see your first post, and *very* glad to see this one :-). I'm only jumping in now because I thought it was a good opportunity to post this bit from the Happy/Ecto FAQ: .......................................................................... HAPPY RHODES/ECTO FAQ The list has been *very* active, with over 200 members, and topics on any subject of interest to Ectophiles are welcome to be discussed. We talk about other artists besides Happy (female artists mainly, but recommend- ations of male artists are fine). Non-music topics seen in Ecto range from movies to politics and just about everything in between. ........................................................................ This has been the "philosophy" of Ecto since the beginning, and I don't see it changing anytime soon. Notice that it's not just a Happy Rhodes FAQ, it's a Happy/Ecto FAQ. Ecto developed its own personality quite apart from just being a Happy Rhodes mailing list and it's because the members of the list got involved in shaping that personality. Not just the regular, semi-regular and occasional posters, but the new members and long-time lurkers too. Ecto's atmosphere makes itself felt right away and members decide if they want to be a part of it, rather than try to change it. It's so rare for someone to complain about Ecto content, which is amazing when you see it happening so often in other mailing lists (and newsgroups) and I really don't know what the secret is, but I'm glad that Ecto is the way it is, and that it works. I realize that Ecto probably would be a lot bigger if the non-Happy/music content and volume were lowered. I know lots of people not on Ecto who've said "I just can't handle the volume" and have either never subscribed or unsubscribed. I don't know what to say to them, but I do like Ecto the way it is and imposing any rules at all would just make the group stilted and awkward, and might eventually kill it. People on the list have said that the volume is such that they often have to skim, but you rarely see that as a criticism, but rather a fact of busy lives led by subscribers. It's another example, I think, of Ecto's atmosphere at work. People tend to say things that indicate that they deal with the volume and content in their own ways rather than ask other people to change *their* ways. That's nice. I'm just throwing out some thoughts, not intended to focus on you, Drewcifer. These are thoughts I've had and your posts just gave me a good opportunity to get them said. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ That's as far as I got and there was more I meant to add, but I don't remember what, but that's mainly what I wanted to say. Don't take it personally Diane (or Mortimer) because I'm just using your post to add my own 2c in. I'm glad you'rre posting Diane, and I wouldn't want to discourage you or anyone else to post thoughts and opinions. > Oh, one more thing. I want a HR tee-shirt!!! How do I get one? Write to H&K (thanks Kate, for posting the address for Holly) and include $13.99 plus $2.00 for postage & packaging. Kiri kiri's: > 'tom cruise is scary looking?' Again, I don't know the character, but the scenes shown showed a *very* scary looking person. They said it was Tom Cruise under all that makeup and I guess I believe them, though I *never* would have identified Cruise if they hadn't said that's who it was. I taped it so when you come over I'll show it to you. Btw, in this scene he was biting Brad Pitt's neck. > ATTENTION! :) > > Courtney and I will be doing thanksgiving at my house this year. > We will be arriving in chicago late wednesday night and leaving > on sunday. Gaffa Central would be fine, unless someone else wants to donate their place. (We *do* have the big screen though :-)) Would any/every one be up to going out to eat? There's an *AMAZING* restaurant called Gulliver's that has to be seen to be believed. The food is very good, but the main attraction is the restaurant itself. I'm dubbing it "Chicago CoolThing2" because it's now someplace that I'm going to try and drag every Ectophile to if I can. I can't describe it. It's like the Cool Thing at O'Hare, you just have to see it. This place is even *cooler* than the Cool Thing at O'Hare! Trust me! (You do, of course you do :-) so say yes) I can't wait to see you and Courtney again!! Yay!!!! Thanks for the news Mike! Pah! The silly thing about Carlsbad, last I heard, is that the city council were going to put a box to vote for or against Lego on the next election ballot. The November *1994* ballot. Did this go through? NeIl? Any San Diegophiles know? If this was agreed to, then it seems silly for Lego to have chosen Carlsbad. NAIL are such obnoxious loudmouths that they could get a majority of "no" votes. It means that Lego would wait an entire year to find out if the citizens of Carlsbad will accept a Lego park there. Either this didn't go through, or else Lego is *very* confident that they'll "win" or that a vote will be non-binding, and they'll just go ahead and build anyway, even if they do get a majority of no votes. I bet the NAIL folks are hopping mad! HAH!! (What jerks, how could anybody be against a Lego park?) Sorry Virginia :-(. I thought that the announcement of a Disneyland East would help Lego choose Prince William County. I don't think they'd compete, I think they'd complement each other (Jeffy!) but I imagine that the weather in that area, and the fact that the Lego park couldn't be open year-round, had a lot to do with the decision. It really is a shame though. PWC needs the Lego park more than snooty Carlsbad. *sigh* (Not that there aren't any weirdos in PWC....in Carlsbad the opposition comes from conservative upper-middle class residents, while in PWC there was a short-lived push to keep Lego out from the ultra left. It's been a while so I don't rremember the name of the orginazation, but an ultra liberal group wrote Lego a letter, reprinted in the local newspaper, urging Lego to stay out because PWC is an ultra-conservative, Bible- thumping, fundamentalist county. "Pat Robertson Country" in other words. This letter said that such a forward-thinking, liberal company as Lego shouldn't be part of such a nasty county. It was *so* bizarre! This group was against Lego being there because they didn't think the county *deserved* Lego! I imagine that letter is on a Lego executive's wall somewhere in Denmark :-).) > Oh well. Yep! (Well, it means that I'll make NeIl take us there to see it when we visit the San Diego/LA area sometime after 1999, which is when it's supposed to be finished.) *ANTHONY KOSKEY* Welcome back!! I envy you for being able to visit the park in Denmark. I'd love to go there someday. I've only seen pictures of it.
