I've decided that she's a healer through her music. Because you can be unhappy or depressed or even suicidal and listen to her and feel better. Or if you can't sleep, you can listen and be soothed. We have two copies of Rhode Songs in our huge Tower store. I tried to convince one of the less brilliant assistant managers to make a promo out of one, I'd even pay for it, but he siad no. There is no real reason. He did say that if we got a promo copy for the store (an official one, I guess) that we'd play it.... I've just been made a shift supervisor/manager, so I choose the music to play...she would definately be played. So any ideas? If Aural Gratification could send me a Promo copy (with that sticker or something) at tower, that'd be really cool. (was: Smells like New Jersey) As I write this, I'm positively having pangs about thinking I have problems, having read of Jessica's road trip through Kafkaland, Vickie's and Albert's respective crises, and one or two other matters which escape me. Be that as it may, the past two days have remained dysphoric in their own way. Yesterday morning, I learned I still was in the running for a job for which I applied. So far so good. Things began to play out in the afternoon, when a system crash wiped out several days of saved mailing list posts. I spent most of the evening at a mock-trial experiment for which I'd volunteered ear- lier. After seeing the other "jurors" in action, I went away thinking: Where is Henry Fonda now that we need him. I guess the republic will survive, but don't ask me how. I spent most of today attending to a legal matter (civil) of my own, so I'm capable of at least partial empathy with Jessica's plight from direct exper- ience. It was nearly five in the afternoon when I started to read email, so I'm going to miss some of _Return to Lonesome Dove_--not that that's such a great loss. I shall be taking all of tomorrow off from the net to go to the public opinion meetings, so I look forward to being bushwhacked by a massive backlog of mailing-list posts on Monday. I may e able to dig my way out of all that by Monday afternoon anyway. We shall see. I firmly believe there are too damn many cars on the road, judging by the amount of time it takes me to get some places on the bus, but the Joisey method of thinning the herd seems like overkill. I am, nonetheless, reminded of some advice a student of mine, whose day job was as a cop, gave me after I got my first ticket in 1977. He suggested taking pictures of the intersec- tion where I got nailed, to prove to the judge that the two stop signs were so close together as to make it inevitable that one would eventually go thru one of them. I did, but never got to use the evidence because the judge ultimately sent my whole cohort to The Movie. I strongly urge Jessica to take pictures of the site, to prove that the shoulder wasn't there. She should con- sult a lawyer on general principle; I can think of possible defenses based on necessity (getting her friend to the eye doctor in the face of an ophthalmic emergency), and the Eighth Amendment (the disproportionate penalties in the local traffic codes). Neither of these is likely to work in practice, but I think Jessica should run them by the lawyer anyhow. She should, in any case, eschew the path of least resistance. Paying the proverbial two dollars never advanced the interests of justice none. To add insult to injury, I read in the paper after I got home last night that WBEZ has cancelled Stuart Rosenberg's shows. I'd held high hopes that he could give Happy some exposure. They're also cancelling _Echoes_, which really has given Happy exposure. On jollier matters: All these recipes for fuzzy blue ecto drinks make it more urgent than ever for us to finally invent Fizzy Blue Ecto Seltzer for real. Pending that happy eventuality, at least Bromo comes in a shiny blue bottle. WRT Kiri's feeler for an ecto party: I could go for that, depending on the particular time it occurred. Then again, the way I feel of late I could go for all manner of things :-) :-('. Well he cracked a smile and he cuffed my hands And he led me into a paddy van I wasn't alone, they had their day With seven more like me who didn't pay All but one were from Mexico And the native tongue was all they spoke If they had their rights, well they wouldn't know And it's off to Journal Square we go To spend in the night in a Jersey jail For the eighty cents we owed the rail The trouble with authority Blame it all on poverty Well they know what to do with me A lesson in humility Living here under the gun I don't know when to walk or run Where's the money coming from? How do we know you don't lie?" So I sat down like a worn-out sinner While the rookie set up a county transfer "To the County Jail you go, I'm just doing my job you know." They remind me of a cross > between the Housemartins and They Might Be Giants. The Barenaked Ladies are a bunch of goofy guys from the suburbs of Toronto. Their first real hit was a cover of Bruce Cockburn's "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" from the tribute compilation _Kick at the Darkness_. Which, incidentally, has Jane Siberry doing vocals on one track. And they first really came to public attention after the mayor of Toronto griped about their name as being sexist. (really!) Naturally they seized upon this absurdity and promoted it to their benefit. Anyway, last year they released their first album, _Gordon_, which sold oodles of copies in Canada and surprised lots of record company execs who'd dismissed them as just another indie band. The song "Enid" did particularly well for them, as did "If I Had a Million Dollars." The latter was originally released on their indie cassette, I think. They're a pretty energetic bunch live, and have a sort of bouncy, cuddly image. They are not marketed as sex symbols, that's for sure. Half the band members are somewhat stout fellows with goatee beards. Anyway, many people seem either to like their funloving style a lot or find it extremely irritating. Okay, that's all the trivia I know about 'em. :) - Neil K. -- 49N 16' 123W 7' / Vancouver, BC, Canada / neil_k_guy@sfu.ca ======================================================================== Date: 19 Nov 1993 08:42:07 -0400 (EDT) From: In love with a sculpture of Hermes Subject: Barenaked Ladies I don't know much, fact-wise, about Barenaked Ladies, but I am a huge fan, and have been ever since I saw them opening for (of all people) John Wesley Harding. They put on an amazing, funny, and exhaustingly energetic show (and may I add they upstaged JWH completely). They're a quintet from Canada, evidently very popular up north as they have gone platinum at least once, but relatively unknown in the states. I have their (very fine!) first album, "Gordon", which is out on Sire/Reprise, 9 26956-2. It's a really wonderful mix of light-hearted songs ("Be My Yoko Ono", "If I Had A Million Dollars") and some really impressive, sensitively written sedater stuff ("The Flaf", "Wrap Your arms Around Me"). Of the two, I prefer Hi. mainly beacause Pomegranate doesn't have so much of the wonderful vocal arrangements that are on Hi. The musical influences seem a bit more diverse, though still folky with alot of latin-American and African influence, and the songs seem a bit more personal and less story-telling-ish. Sounds like it. Their mail address is Glen Rock, NJ. I picked up their eponymous album about a year ago for $2, just because it was on High Street Records (a subsid. of Windham Hill). For $2, why not? I love it. It's a really, really good album; almost every song is a winner. Sort of an American XTC, though more whimsical than cynical.
