My favorite uneasy-listening radio program, Mixing It (Introduced my Mark Russell and Robert Sandal(sp?), BBC Radio 3, Mondays, 10:45--11:30pm) played a Diamanda Galas track last night. The track in question was Amazing Grace from the Vena Cava album. My conclusion? Well, I don't think I'd be very good at a Diamanda concert: I'd be giggling way too much. Actually, it seems that they've played another track in the past. They mentioned that they'd got a letter going on about how she sounded like one possessed by demons and how it was terribly dangerous playing such stuff or some such garbage (I'd say "sheesh!" if it wasn't so passe). (sung: tum te tum... It's a mistake / in the making...) Mixing It is a rather odd beast, their strategy appears to be simple: play anything too eclectic or too strange for anyone else. I can almost guarantee that you'll intensely dislike at least one track per program. The presentation style is rather dry and academic -- last week they played the piano solo piece from The Lemonheads new album and then discussed it briefly in the context of modern piano improvisation (their conclusion? that the Lemonheads track was a bit of a bluff). And they usually leave a really awkward track for the interprogramme announcer (the what?!) to back-announce. You never know, you might be able to get them to play a Happy track if it's far enough off the wall and doesn't sound too much like KaTe (don't ask me for an opinion, I've not heard a single Happy tune). They played Miss Punta Blanca when Summer in the Yukon (the Jane compilation) came out, and An Angel Stepped Down when WIWAB came out. Now I'm back, though, and I don't want to miss the chance to say "Thanks a *LOT*!" to Klaus and Claudia for the Ectofest. We all had a really good time, as you already read in the postings from Uli and Tim. It's always great if you can put faces to the names! = ) A big *hug* to everybody who was there and also to Vickie whom we talked to on the phone. It was great to hear your voice, Vickie! Also a special *hello* to Yngve - it was fun talking to you via IRS! = ) Now one other question: obviously there are people out there who are interested in autograph sessions of writers. I'm a *BIG* fan of Paul Auster (hi Juha!) and I was wondering whether he might have autograph sessions occasionally. If anybody of you hears about anything coming up, would you please so kind and drop me a line?? That would be really nice! Thanks a lot in advance. Well, that's all for today. Well, despite a nasty snafu concerning tickets (my 2nd in regards to the Charles Playhouse; they also screwed up my tickets for Sarah McLachlan last year) Jane managed to enchant me again. Now if only she would come back with a full band. Jane's early concerts at Boston's Paradise are among the best live shows I've ever witnessed. BTW, for you Dead Can Dance fans, (myself included) Jane played the new album between her 7:30 and 10:00 shows. For those of you who live in Detroit, Jane spoke highly of your city. Cheers! This is my first time writing to the list. I just joined about two weeks ago and I'm really enjoying it. To Greg - The Peter Weir film you were speaking about is called "Picnic at Hanging Rock" - Thought you might like to know. To anyone who might be a fan of Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry - Besides having their own show, and appearing in Jeeves and Wooster and Blackadder, they were also in an episode of The Young Ones, called "Bambi", with Emma Thompson - in which they play rich college kids who go up against the Young Ones on a college bowl-type quiz show. Also, I bought a tape about six years ago by a group called Longhouse. It was a group composed of the singer-songwriter Lisa Herman and a "choir" of about seven other voices. It has some of the best harmonies I've ever heard. Does anyone else out there have this recording? Just curious. Bye for now. Copperman Subject: Sleeping in Flames Neile mentioned Jonathon Carroll's _Sleeping in Flames_ and I have to give a very hearty second to her endorsement. Carroll is one of my absolutele favorite authors. His stuff is simply amazing. He has some of the most vibrant characters that I feel so well acquainted with only a short way into the novels. I don't know where you would put his books. His short stories have started to appear in horror anthologies, and I've seen him mentioned in articles on recent science fiction (oops, an SF reference, wouldn't want that now, would we?) The things most typical about his works, other than the compelling characterizations, is the fact that the take place in the present, but always have a few twists that make the world unlike the one that we know. Many times he explores different mediums and allows them to affect society in ways much greater than you would imagine they could. I wouldn't say more because the books all have surprising twists to them. Many people think Sleeping in Flames is his best book, but the easiest to find are Outside the Dog Museum and After Silence. Warning - AFter Silence is a serious downer (more depressing than his novella Black Cocktail, which he claims is his most loathed book). I have a special spot in my heart for his first book, Land of Laughs, out of print but possibly soon to be re-issued, although it was my first one, so that usually accounts for it. Oh, looking back, Neile's description as a "contemporary, dark fantasy" is actually right on the mark. (GOod job, from one neal to another). I can't imagine anyone wants to hear more on the subject, but I could go on, particularly if there are other big fans around (but don't worry, I won't without encouragement).
