Very joyful, upbeat (I'm recommending something joyful and upbeat? On ECTO?) songs with gorgeous close harmonies that are hard to stop dancing to. They'll be playing at Harvard University on Saturday, November 20, too. Their album is called "Seleniko" and it's out on Green Linnet Records in this country. She and her band looked and sounded a bit ragged, but they did an OK job on "Can't Stop Killing You" (kind of a dumb-sounding song). Conan didn't interview her. I'll have to see "Fearless"; every Peter Weir film I've ever seen has been magical and thought-provoking. What was that one about the girls' school in Australia? Some disturbing stuff in that one. ObHappy: now that I've digested RhodeSongs, and received my official catalog (read: page) from Aural Gratification, I sent for the rest of the collection (even the T-shirt :-). I hope Happy has time to autograph them. I can't remember the titles of my favorites from RhodeSongs, but "Ode" was definitely top of the list; her voice is amazing on that one. "Given In" was on the list, too. There's one on there with the haunting backing vocals that consists of just two notes (chords, really, since she overdubbed), but since I don't have my CD with me, I don't remember the title (the melody goes C-D- Eb-F-Eb or something like that). Is it "I Say"? I'm kind of ambivalent about her Kate-ness, as I previously noted, but on the whole, I use my patented "Beatle Rule": if something sounds like something else I like, I'll like it too, unless I get the feeling that the performer has absolutely zero talent of their own, and are merely copying. Happy certainly has abundant talent, and if she writes and sings like Kate Bush, that's fine. In fact, so much the better, since Kate isn't writing like the Kate I used to know. You know, first there was "Miss Cathy Bush," with TKI and L; then there was "Kate Bush," with NFE, TD, and HOL; now there is "Ms. Catherine Bush," with X4, TSW, and TRS. Happy's stuff teeters on the Cathy-Kate border. I would have no trouble believing that Happy somehow got a hold of some secret demos Kate did circa 1979-1980. I don't mean that in an insulting way, either. Happy manages to combine the best of the "spooky" Kate with her own style and come up with something wonderful. But then you knew that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Greg O'Rear E-mail: orear@ise.ufl.edu Industrial and Systems Engineering Department Phone: (904) 392-3389 University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida FAX: (904) 392-3537 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 15 Nov 93 09:47:18 MST From: dbx@olympic.atmos.colostate.edu (Doug Burks) Subject: 1993 Happy Gift Project -- Take two Greetings Ecto-folk, Time ticks away, leaving just four weeks until the deadline for the 1993 Happy Gift Project. If you intend to contribute, act now! Currently the full list of contributions that I've received is: Doug Burks and he hasn't even put them on tape yet. :) I have tacked the original announcement onto this note, but would like to emphasize one paragraph, selecting a gift besides the tapes for Happy. So far, I've seen one suggestion -- a quantity of Ecto Cooler. Admittedly it may be difficult, but can anyone top that? :) Doug Burks _O_ dbx@olympic.atmos.colostate.edu |< She really is!! December is a traditional time for gift giving, so The Management (Mitch Pravatiner and myself) invite everyone to contribute towards a collective gift from Ectophiles to Happy Rhodes. As per tradition (Ecto is old enough to have traditions!? :) ), you are invited to contribute a selection of music that you would like Happy to hear, along with any personal greetings, song introductions, whatever. The _only_ restriction is that your total contribution not exceed ten minutes in length. (Well, I don't know if we'd accept a John Cage homage called 9'47" :) ). Even then, feel free to add extra musical selections which can fill any leftover or odd spaces on the final tapes. If you do so, please make clear which selections are part of your official contribution and the priority you place on the additional bits. (We know. They are all great, but this still would be much appreciated. :) ) Original music is not only welcomed but encouraged! All of this will be copied onto a master tape, tied together with seasonally appropriate selections by The Management (Suggestions welcomed!) and the dulcet tones of Master of Ceremony Mitch Pravatiner. A copy will be mailed to one Happy Rhodes. The recent Happy Birthday Project also included a small gift, a kite handmade by Jeff Burka, a perfect addition to the tapes, in my opinion. It would be great to add a similar gift to this package. We hereby declare this electronic floor open for suggestions. I am also issuing a call for a volunteer to gift-wrap and mail the final package to Happy. Anyone should be able to better any ham-fisted attempt of mine. I would re-imburse any expenses of the wrapping and mailing. We hope that gives the spirit of this project, so on to the administrative details. Record your spoken greetings/introductions and musical selections on a cassette tape (heavily suggested: C-100 chrome bias, recorded in Dolby B) and mail it to me: Doug Burks 2036 W Plum St C7 Fort Collins CO 80521 USA In return, when the project is finished, I will mail all contributors a copy of the final 1993 Happy Gift Project tapes. Unfortunately, the number and length of the cassettes required to hold the final project will depend on the contributions. As a guideline, preceding projects have ended up on either two C-100 tapes or three C-90 tapes. If the project runs onto two tapes, I will supply the second tape (your choice of type) free to any contributors. If it runs onto a third (or fourth? :) ) tape, the responsibility for the additional tapes is yours, so please choose which tape dubbing project option you want to use. All return packaging and postage will be covered by me for all contributors. Copies of the 1993 Happy Gift Project will be available for non-contributors via the tape dubbing project. Watch this space in late December for an announcement. If you would like to include personal greetings or music introductions but have no way to record them, feel free to e-mail your greetings/introductions to Mitch Pravatiner (u15289@uicvm.cc.uic.edu), and he will record your greetings on a tape and mail it to me for blending with your musical selections. The deadline for all of this will be 10 Dec. Due to the over-burdened postal services in late November and December, please act soon! If you have any questions, comments, raspberries, feel free to post them or e-mail them to me or Mitch. I strongly encourage everyone to contribute. Don't worry about the quality of your selections. Just look at mine over the years and realize how easily you can best them! :) Let's make this the biggest and best project ever! Maura ======================================================================== From: dcwalter@tomservo (Christian Walters) Subject: Extra Sarah Date: Mon, 15 Nov 93 14:26:42 CST Hey, all. I knew I was asking for trouble. Okay, see, when I found that the new Sarah McLachlan album wasn't going to be released in America until next year sometime (and it figures -- you Canadians ship us Michael J. Fox, William Shatner, and Jason Priestly without a second thought, but hold up the new Sarah album :) ), I called The CD Bar, whose number was posted here. Well, when it finally *did* get released in The Great White North, I called them back, and they said they didn't have it in yet. So I got the e-mail address from Nettwerk from kindly people like Ilka (hi Ilka!), got in touch with them, and BANG my copy of "Fumbling Towards Ecstacy" was here within a week. Boy, it's good, too. So I call The CD Bar back to cancel my order (actually, I was just going to change it to getting Happy's "Rearmament" or something), and the guy there says: 1) It'll be at least another 2 weeks before my order comes in. 2) I *cannot* alter the order or cancel it, because they would be stuck with the disc. 3) I can just deal with it, hahahahahahahahahaha! (They didn't actually say that last part, but you could hear it in his voice.) So now I'm stuck with two copies of this album. Not that it's not at least twice as good as many albums I have just one copy of -- Gary Puckett's Greatest Hits comes to mind -- but I'm willing to risk just having one copy until it's released here. So, the point of all this is: I have a copy of Sarah's new disc for sale. I'll charge you whatever I got charged for it -- the price in Canadian $$$ converted to US $$ plus whatever they add on for shipping. When I ordered it, the guy told me that it would be about $15 US total. I will happily ship it to you the day after it arrives, and won't even charge extra for postage, unless you want it to go overseas. (Unless overseas rates are cheaper than I remember.) Anyway, if you're interested, let me know. I won't hold you to anything until I find out exactly how much it is (the dude couldn't tell me... but I'll try again in a few days, and maybe someone else will be at work :) ). So, I took a copy of _Equipoise_ along with me. I felt that was the best CD for Anne Rice since it has "He Will Come"/"The Flight" on it. I also included a note with the CD which briefly explained Ecto, Happy's career, the themes in _Equipoise_, and how wonderful Happy's music would be in an Anne Rice project. I made sure I emphasized the internet fan base since Anne is fairly obsessed with computers. After Anne had signed my pile of books, I handed her the CD. I told her that I thought she would enjoy it and that there was a note inside explaining why I thought so. She seemed very excited and looked at the CD with a great amount of interest. Hopefully, that means she will actually listen to it and maybe even love it as much as we know she should. So, let's keep our fingers crossed... You're dead right that we *ARE* here to talk about |(chiefly) music. And I'm sure your opinion/interpretation will be of |interest. I would certainly agree with Steve here. I do not mean to criticize in anyway people who like to post songly breakdowns of albums in general. As far as gaffa goes, I understand that it is much easier to give your opinion of each song individually rather than to say something deep about the music on the album as a whole (which would arguably be more interesting). Myself, when I hear an album that I really like that I think other people on ecto might not have heard but *should*, then I will post some glowing, enthusiastic review. And I will look forward to hearing whether other people find it as enticing as I did. Likewise, if enough ectopeople whose tastes I value say that artists such and so is great, then I'll put it on my list of stuff to look for at the CD shop. And I'll listen to and try to evaluate it myself to see whether I agree with the pack. Unless I feel particularly pro or con (or if my reaction is different from anyone's I've already read) then I'll post about it. Otherwise, I might just say "got the Tribe album and like alot just like everyone else." It's a different story when we're all rating music that we've all (by and large) already heard. This is also ok to do, of course, but it gets alot more tired more quickly, esp. when people are chiming in with the majority or the minority as Steve described aptly. If you can do what Charley did with Jane's album, which is to put things in a light I would *never* have figured out, then this is laudable. But I see alot less utility in posting the 30th song-by-song review and saying the same things as 29 other people have said just to "assert your proficiency" or whatever. Especially when you might change your mind the next day (and esp. when you *end your post* specifically saying that "I'll probably change my mind tomorrow" -- isn't this just a *little* silly??! :-). -mjmassertingthathewillsaynomoreaboutthisasitsgettingalittleoldprettyfast ======================================================================== Subject: jane review in NYT 11/15/93 Date: Mon, 15 Nov 93 16:04:42 -0500 From: Dan Riley There's a short writeup of jane's Thursday concert at the bottom line in today's New York Times, pg c18, written by Stephen Holden.
