Susan, needless to say, is my second choice for the next commissioner of baseball, my first choice being the noted sport sociologist Harry Edwards. WRT our contemplated foray into the exciting world of advertising: Through the magic of the bumper-to-bumper information superhighway, Laura's trial balloon arrived long after someone else's followup did, and my own followup was actual- ly to the latter. I have much less of a problem, needless to say, with the notion of an ad in lieu of buying Happy an additional Christmas present, than with doing so as a substitute for this year's HGP. (Perhaps I can be forgiven for my ego-involvement in the latter :-). ) On the other hand, one needs to consider what the amount of money likely to be avaliable will buy. It is necessary to find out the display advertising rates in _Pulse_, or any other possible outlet, before proceeding any further. The next critical step, if there is to be one, must be to determine what words or pictures would actually fill those column inches. The net benefit to Happy would be rather limited, IMHO WIVH, if all we were able to come up with was something resembling the interminable "complements of a friend" ads in a machine politician's yearbook-- which is not to say that we need to get BBDO, Y&R, et al. competing to do our campaign. Then again, it was always my impression that this was the sort of thing that Happy and Kevin are paying Susanne to worry about; what is more, Happy reportedly says she'd rather have a personal item of some sort, and this too should be kept in mind. Anyway... WRT snpf's followup to my post, I have, and like, Garrison Keillor's _Songs of the Cat)_ album. (But are no European ectophiles ROFL over my "French Railroad" jape? hmm... :-) ) If Christine Lavin does another concert soon after December, maybe she and D^2 can perform a duet cover of Weird Al's "I Lost on Jeopardy" :-) :-('. Albert ends his post with an epigraph: >"Who said anything about it hurting? > It's gonna be beautiful > It's gonna be wonderful > It's gonna be paradise" > -- Kate Bush Methinks Kate could up her wealth mightily by licensing that number for promo- tional use by dentists far and wide :-). In memory of Federico Fellini and River Phoenix. It would have been such a fitting tribute if they'd have rerun the episode of _Northern Exposure_ in which Ed dreams that Fellini is giving him advice on filmmaking. Is All Souls Night tonight or tomorrow night? I shall, I suppose, have to celebrate the appropriate night by pulling out my autographed CD of _The Visit_, and play the "All Souls Night" track while I reflect on why it always reminds me of Robert Bly and his fellow-travelers. Well, I do know that the Smiths did it first, although I don't know exactly when they did it. It appeared on their album of B-sides, rarities, etc., etc. called _Louder than Bombs_, and that came out in 1987. However, all the material on the album was previously released, so the Smiths version definitely pre-dates the Kirsty MacColl version. Also, the album credits say the song was written by Morrissey/Marr, so it was a Smiths song originally. Hope that helped... I *loved* their new EP. hoo boy...let's see, the gigolo aunts are actually not from boston, or at least their formative years were not there. they started out in potsdam, ny as students at potsdam state college (across the river from clarkson, my alma mater). they released one tape called _...better than fish..._ before graduating. i stupidly taped over my dub of this with the album _everybody happy?_ thinking that the mixes of the songs would be the same. big mistake. _everybody happy?_ is a poor reflection of the brilliance that _...better than fish..._ promised (though it was still okay in it's own way i suppose). after that came a release, which i believe has never been available in america, called _tales from the vinegar side_. the copy of this that i have is a spanish pressing on impossible records. the only other things i have are the "bloom"/"cope" 7" and the ep, the name of which i forget now. oh yeah, _full bloom_. i also have some recordings of the band we did for them while i was at clarkson. only half of the session remains, but it's still pretty good material. one of these days, i'll review all the cds piling up on the floor by the stereo. but probably not tonight. +woj ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 1 Nov 93 19:20:52 PST From: Neal R. Copperman Subject: KaTeBox While I was in Denver, I did some comparisons between the American discs and the Japanese box my friend had. We both noticed an obvious difference in the sound, with the Japanese box being cleaner and sharper. While we could clearly identify which disc was which when comparing the two, I am not sure how noticable the difference would be if you just put one on divorced from the other. (The Ryko David Bowie discs were so much better that the improvement was immediately noticable with no comparisons necessary, but then again, the old Bowie pressings didn't sound very good either.) I'm curious if there will be any improvements on the cheap Canadian discs. Neal ======================================================================== From: Philip Sainty Date: Tue, 2 Nov 1993 16:58:15 +1300 Well the first thing I did when I got into town this morning was go to an automatic teller and draw out sufficient funds (read pretty much all that was in there) for me to purchase "The Red Shoes" and Margot Smith's "Sleeping With The Lion"... The record shop wasn't yet open, so I whiled away half an hour searching for Kate references in the weeks/months-behind issues of NME, Melody Maker, and the like in the magazine shop a few minutes down the road... When I came back, the record shop had opened, and I eagerly went to the new releases section... no Kate... so I went to the desk, thinking that perhaps they weren't getting them in until later in the day... "Monday" I was told. *Monday* Arrrrggggghhhhh!!!!! :-( :-( :-( I consoled myself with the thought that at least I'd leave with one CD - after all, it's been at least a couple of weeks I think since Anthony told me SWTL had been released here - and so thinking went to the shelves... Several minutes later I was back at the desk again without my prize... "Who?" he asked... Arrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had such a good weekend, why why why did this have to happen??? I spent the rest of the morning and up until around 2.00pm wandering around town, visiting every music shop I know of... blankly scouring the bargain bins, and gazing longingly at LPs of "The Kick Inside", "Lionheart", and "Hounds of Love" that one shop had - the photos on the CDs just don't compare to the full size LP versions... The sole redeeming events of the day were finding a much reduced _Child of an Ancient City_ (Tad Williams and Nina Kiriki Hoffman) in a bookshop, and an Enya single I picked up for 95c in one of those bargain bins... Date: Tue, 02 Nov 93 00:59:05 -0500 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu I was in town this evening doin' some stuff at my folks' house until a bit past 11. Having seen posts in l-h about some Tower's staying open past midnight to sell _The Red Shoes_, I decided to go over and check. I bummed around a bit, just poking here and there (only one copy of VI, *still* filed under H) when a salescrud got on the pa to say that store was closing in a few minutes. Then I thought to myself, "Where else might they do a midnight sale? Hmmm. Well, *everyone* knows that gay men love KaTe. Better go check the Dupont Circle Kemp Mill." Lo 'n behold, I arrived a few minutes before midnight to find a big sign saying that they would indeed be selling the album at midnight *and* they were giving free t-shirts to the first bunch o' customers. I WAS IN THE FIRST BUNCH O' CUSTOMERS! What a monster bonus! For my $12.71, I got the New KaTe *and* a way spiff black t-shirt with the album cover silkscreened on the front! I'm partially into my first. God, was it *ever* worth the wait! No, it's no HoL or TD, and NFE will forever hold that special place in my heart. But perhaps this *ties* for third? Yeah, yeah, I know, it's *way* to early to be saying shit like that. But it's such an *interesting* album. It's amazing how much better "Moments of Pleasure" is when it's not coming from a mediocre sample. And "Song of Solomon" and "And So Is Love" and "Lily" are incredible. God. This is great! But now it's bed time. :-( I'll have to listen to the rest in the morning.
