We watched videos, listened to music, took pictures, wrote a letter to Happy, went to see a castle, went to the zoo, ate a lot, got tipsy on fuzzy blue drinks, called up other ectophiles etc etc etc... Except for the more touristic bits (we had guests from the US then) that's roughly what will be happening this time. No plans or schedules, a lot depends on you too. That's going to happen in less than 2 weeks (!), so make up your mind whether you would like to join us pretty soon. As soon as possible, we would like to know the following: - who would like to come? - will you come alone or with a friend? - how will you be travelling? - do you need crash space? - would you prefer friday or saturday night? (see below) - can you bring a sleeping bag and/or ...? - do you have any special diet requirements? Crash space is available, though limited. It gets uncomfortable if there are more than 3-4 people at a time, so we suggest that guests who'd like to stay for a night decide whether to arrive on friday afternoon and leave on saturday, or arrive on saturday morning and leave on sunday. Main party day, i.e. the "overlap", is Saturday. Please note we have a smoke free home and would prefer this to be a non-smoking party. In case you can't supress the urge there's always the balcony. This time of year the plants are dead already anyway ... ;) Most likely, you will have the possibilty to attend virtually through IRC. Some Details: Wuppertal is in central/west Germany, about 40 km east of Duesseldorf, which is also the nearest international airport. It is surrounded by several motorways and is connected to several InterCity railway lines. I'll write up details about how to reach us in the next couple of days, and make the information available on request. If you'd like to reach us by telephone, as time is short, here are some numbers: in Wuppertal in Germany from abroad at home: 556781 0202/556781 +49/202/556781 Klaus at work: 0231/5599301 0231/5599301 +49/231/5599301 Claudia at work: 4392088 0202/4392088 +49/202/4392088 (via the secretary, ask for her) It would have been nice to attend a concert after the party, just like we did last time, when we saw the Sugarcubes in Duesseldorf. In fact, Bjoerk will be playing at he same venue only two weeks later, but unfortunately that is the only time when we are not available. See ya!!! Thank you, woj, for doing so. There probably should be some sort of lockout which prevents people from posting *anywhere*, especially Ecto, while in a rotten, crabby mood. Tree knows I could use one. I'd like to apologize to everyone on the list, as well as to the posters to the tangential thread about which I complained (who will probably never speak to me again, but hey), for requesting a dimininution of non-music traffic. Yeah, it eats up bandwidth; yeah, it's annoying to page through if you're not part of it; but, yeah, it's Ecto. As everyone has reminded me, side-threads are what Ecto is all about. I'll shut up now, so as not to waste any more bandwidth with this meta-thread. Thank you to the few who wrote me and gave me a much-needed smack on the behind. Copperman Subject: on the other hand >> ---John Giorno, of Giorno Poetry Systems (the label) fame. >> >> In case you've lost the thread, they are the three on "You're the >>Guy I Want To Share My Money With". There is an interesting view of JG in URGH A music war (insert !!! liberally) How did Laurie Anderson ever get it into her head that she couldn't sing, and needed to learn? I thought her older stuff was brilliant, but it seems to me like she has been re-presenting the same stuff, with nary a new idea in sight for the last (large) number of years. Strange Angels was kind of different, but I still preferred her speaking, and even singing, before she took voice lessons. Being a wrongthinker and a nay-sayer, I have to throw out some negative (ok, less positive) thoughts on recently mentioned movies. I thought The Wedding Banquet was decent, but that it had too many "charming" touches thrown in. The gay characters were wonderfully presented, and it was good to see that without any real hoopla, just set out there, but I felt like they took a few too many easy way outs. That aside, the movie was often very funny and touching. "Nightmare Before Christmas" was visually exciting, but not too much else for me. (That was almost enough.) I was very disappointed with the music. This was a place where Oingo Boingo tunes could almost be thrown in without any modifications, but instead we got repetitive and uninteresting standard Broadway fare. Also, Burton's notoriously twisted humour was present, but too often restrained and overpowered by cute and precious touches. I felt that it pandered to trying to bring in an all ages crowd, but didn't give the warmth and spirit that a great all ages holiday show (like the Grinch) has. Plus, wasn't the moral something like don't try to grow and expand, but learn to accept yourself as you are? (OK, accepting yourself is fine, but Jack had to limit himself to that area that he already knew and understood, rather than expanding his horizons.) It's good, very good, but maybe a little too accessible and commercial. But that's not necessarily bad, and I am sure that I missed a lot of things while browsing through used CDs and listening to the album at the same time! ;) b) Did a bit of Happyvangelizing while I was paying for my Cds, and since the people working there appeared to be Kate fans, I told them all about Happy and gave them the 'KaTe dueting with Annie Lennox' bit. They sounded interested, asked me who distributes Happy (a question to which the answer I do not know) and so I think that Suzanne should definitely get in touch with them. Their particulars are: MOD LANG 2136 University Avenue Berkeley, CA (ZIP???) Tel. (510) 486-1850 It's funny how a lady who was also there for the KaTe preview asked me about Happy after she overheard the conversation! c) I got a very interesting CD over there. It's by FM Einheit, and is called Stein. It features Diamanda Galas on vocals on one track, Katharina Franck on another and Ulrike Haage on almost half the tracks. It was recorded between 1988-1990, so it probably shows where some of the influences that made 'Two faces' so good came from. It's also very nice. Industrial, but melodic. d) I also noticed that Boston bands are in every clearance bin I have seen in the area. It's funny how the Lemonheads capitalized on the Boston sound of the late 80s, while other bands that were as good (if not better) failed dramatically (see Cavedogs, Heretix, O Positive, Cliffs of Dooneen etc). Anybody with a gigolo aunts discography out there? I *loved* their new EP.
