I'm new to ecto and this is my first post, so bear with me for not mentioning Happy. :) All this talk about how good Shawn is in concert has me drooling at the bit and anxious to see her. One problem...what's her tour schedule? Any info would be appreciated. special K ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 23 Nov 92 15:39:52 EST From: a virtual stranger Subject: messianic leanings ganglia@cortex.rutgers.edu (Christine) sez: >There's a song out by Messiah, a techno band, that samples (I'm told) a line >from This Mortal Coil..."When I dream, you dream about me...." Does anyone >know which This Mortal Coil album that line is from...i.e. the name of the > song....??? The Messiah song is called Temple of Dreams. "song to the siren" on _it'll end in tears_. that's liz fraser of the cocteau twins singing it. this song was originally recorded by a guy named tim buckley. i've never been able to figure out if i like his or liz's cover better (never mind that laurie freelove also covers it on her album). incidentially, there was a note in the latest nme that said that 4ad (the label that this mortal coil is on) has served notice to messiah and is suing for copyright infringement. hmmm. a bit ironic as 4ad got in serious hot water when they released "rump up the volume" by m/a/r/r/s a few years back.... woj ======================================================================== Date: 23 November 1992 15:43:24 CST From: Subject: "Did you ever have one of those days?"--Elvis The above was one of the tracks on the soundtrack album of _GI Blues_, which was the true content of my first copy of a Kinsey Report blues album back in 1989. It is brought to mind by the sundry events of the front end of today, which have led up to the mindset I'm in as I write this. It all started early this morning when I awoke to find my cat standing on top of me, purring into my ear--a dead giveaway that he wanted breakfast immediate- ly. I decided to try to stonewall him, since he was generally remaining still rather than chewing me, clawing me, or walking atop the printed matter that surrounded me and doing the same to it, all of which he often does on other occasions. I went back to sleep, only to be awakened sometime later by the experience of him wrapping his front legs around my arm, and thrusting his lower body back and forth along it--he seemed to be trying to boink it, of all things. I finally managed to shake him loose, and fixed him a bowl of cat food, whereupon I went back to sleep. Not long after, it was time to get up for real, by which time he had resumed indulging his paraphilia for my arm. He managed to stay out of my way until it was time to leave; then he hid com- pletely. I spent quite some time trying to locate him, until I gave up when I could no longer defer leaving. At this moment, I'm still not certain where he is around home. This delay, and the slow movement of the CTA through today's rain and gloom--the umpteenth day in a row that Chicago has been like that--caused me to be half an hour late for an admittedly noncritical appoint- ment with someone. Eventually, the chronic stress caused me to almost post my latest film trivia quiz to the net with the answers indicated--arguably the low point of the afternoon. I recount all this only to explain the cynical mood I'm in at this moment, which is the principal factor in the rather cynical, even supercilious tone of this post. These disclaimers out of the way, let me now cut to the chase. Upon reading the remarks of my recent compatriot in the optical market, Vickie, about Maire B., I was drawn irresistably to the conclusion that Moya was plain ol' Mary Brennan until Gaelic became trendy. The whole thing reminds me of an episode of _Rumpole of the Bailey_ in which Rumpole, trying to reach a meeting of the minds with a rather thick hotel clerk, points out that his name is spelled "R-U-M-P-O-L-E: pronounced Marjoribanks." Stuart's appeal for laments of women for their dead lovers was an interesting provocateur of thought. I tried to think of some, and found that I couldn't, though there are many gendered in the other direction. If all else fails, Stuart, heve you considered simply bending the gender of one of those? The effect might be interesting. BTW: All that reminds me that a couple of weeks ago, Garrison Keillor did a truly marvelous sendup of that venerable old adolescent car-crash chestnut, "Tell Linda I Love Her." Unfortunately, the network feed got fried as I was taping the Sunday rerun, so I never got it on tape. This bit is well worth monitoring the summer reruns for, though. So Lida Husik is coming out with album no. 2 already. Seems such a short time ago that her first one arrived on earth. "Pump [not rump] Up The Volume" was a 4AD release? I never would have thought it--it sounds so unetheareal. Martin's account of waiting for Tori's concert to begin reminded me of the accounts of Happy's concert at the QE2, with its chicken-wired stage. My first thought on hearing this was that if she plays that house again, she should pay it tribute by covering "Rawhide" (cf. _The Blues Brothers_). Speaking indirectly of whom: Last week, WBEZ's pledge drive had elliptical references to the fact that the next one will be in three months or so. Any- one know whether the so-called More Paint album will be out by then? The thought comes to me that it would make a dandy premium. Could Aural Gratifi- cation realize a meaningful tax break by donating some copies? On the subject of public radio: I can't get _World Cafe_ here, but who's on Wednesday? Off to see whether I'll be coming home tonight to my home, my cat, or neither. I'm kind of a female vocalist snob. There's nothing on earth so transcendentally beautiful as a woman's voice. Male singers just don't cut it for me, as a rule. (Not to say I don't like any groups with male singers, I just don't listen for the same reasons -- U2, REM, Peter Gabriel, lots of others). --- scasterg@waltham.columbus.oh.us -- Stuart M. Date: Mon, 23 Nov 92 20:57:37 EST From: Angelos Kyrlidis Hi, On the subject of songs sung by women to their dead lovers, I doubt any can capture the beauty and emotional impact of delivery of Sinead's 'I am stretched on your grave'. The only catch is, she didn't write it. Sample lyrics: "The priests ant the friars approach me in dread because I still love you my love and you're dead I still would be your shelter through rain and through storm and with you in your cold grave I cannot sleep warm So I'm stretched on your grave and will lie there forever if your hands were in mine I'd be sure we'd not sever my apple tree my brightness it's time we were together for I smell of the earth and am worn by the weather" Credits are to King/F. O'Connor. Angelos ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 23 Nov 92 23:16:55 EST From: WretchAwry Subject: Today's your birthday friend...(uh...) For those not in the know, the last time Christine came through Chicago we went to the Adler Planitarium and Shedd Aquarium. We did the "ium" thang, next time will be the "eum" thang, and I suppose the time after that we'll have to do the "ute" thang. (As in Art Institute.) Christime, I promise you, we *won't* make you sit through anything like David Lynch's _On the Air_ this time!
