You just got back from the Orkneys! I'm so envious. I was there for 10 days in the summer of 1991 and I love the place. The islands really are magical and amazing. We're planning on going back spring of 1994. I'd love to hear more about your trip. Just so there's a kind of ecto-connection, Loreena does a song on _Parallel Dreams" called "Standing Stones" which has the chorus "Standing Stones of the Orkney Isles / Gazing Out to Sea / Standing Stones of the Orkney Isles / Bring my love to me." The song describes the stones as being on a narrow neck of land, which makes me think that they must be the Ring of Brodgar (a lovely place). I think I'll go look through my photos again... Part of what I'm working on right now is a series of poems that come from my visit there and other parts of Scotland summer of 1991 and my visit to Wales last summer. They're part of two larger series of poems--one about magic & Celtic myth and one about women in history. We also saw Vance Gilbert here in Seattle in October when he was opening for Meryn Cadell. There again the audience had never heard of him and were very appreciative and enthusiastic. He's got a wonderful sense of humour, and does a wide variety of musical styles. He does a song that he got from June Tabor, which I have on _Aqaba_, "The King of Rome," a simple but moving song. He did a great job of it. I think most of the songs were of his own composition though and they were generally pretty good. He's the kind of person that definitely is best live though. We missed PJ Harvey last night :( She's one of my current favourties. Actually, she has been since last summer. And those of you interested in more offbeat music, a friend recently introduced us to Lida Husik. We have _Bozo_ and _Your Bag_ and I'd highly recommend them both, esp. _Your Bag_. She's records on Shimmy-disk from New York and apparently has a new one coming out this month. She's heard to describe. One part Laurie Anderson, one part Jane Siberry, one part Mazzy Star/Opal and many other bits mixed in. She even does one Madonna-type rap in one song. I've probably played _Your Bag_ twenty times this week. In between I played the Happy cd catalogue. I find it a little strange how I never get tired of Happy's music, though I can hardly wait until the new one is out. Is February when it's expected? Oh, by the way, I saw the 1st 4 at a big local cd place called Silver Platters. They had _Warpaint_ once upon a time, too before it sold out. Vickie--Glad you got the tape! Hope you have some time to play with making the tapes to send to Doug, but as the HGP takes priority we're not in a rush! --Neile neile@u.washington.edu ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 22 Nov 92 16:30:18 PST From: spotter@darwin.bio.uci.edu (Steve Potter) Subject: Those eejets! About Vickie's realization that almost no Irish word is pronounced anything like it is spelled: My sister recently married a gy from rural Ireland (County Mayo, I think) whose name is Padhraic. We always bet people they cant spell it when we introduce him to friends, because it is pronounced like "porek". Coincidentally, his sister is named Maire, and she and her family pronounce it like "mora", but when I was in Ireland I heard many different Irish accents (and never heard the "Sure and begorrah" one we always hear on TV), so perhaps "moya" is from some other locale or class. Don't feel bad, Vickie; It wasnt until my sister had been going out with Padhraic for over a year that he finally let her know that she had been mispronouncing his name all that time--She felt pretty stupid! Beth ======================================================================== From: Martin Dougiamas Subject: Tori in Perth Date: Mon, 23 Nov 1992 22:45:53 +0800 (WST) Well, I went to see Tori last Saturday night and overall, was not disappointed. A rather stunning performance, although there were a few downers throughout the evening. While the auditorium filled they played lots of old country music, which I found surprising. Also some songs like "Tie a Yellow Ribbon". Is this Tori's choice do you think? Opening for her was a local guy (Ian Campbell) with a guitar who played half an hour or so of the most average folk rock I have ever heard, cliched both musically and lyrically. I was actually embarrassed just listening to him. The songs were extremely depressing, too, and quite mono-topical (about breaking up with a girl). Dreadful. Then a short intermission, with more of the country music, which finished with a rousing rendition of "Rawhide" as the lights went down for the part of the evening we'd all been waiting for. Tori skipped on stage wearing flared blue jeans, high-heeled clog-type things and a leotard - half white and half green tartan, and as Rawhide died away, launched directly into Precious Things. (!) From then on my worries ceased and as others have described, I became rather spellbound. Particularly during Man and a Gun - everything else just seemed to disappear and I felt hypnotised staring at her. This was unexpected because I must admit I was a little cynical about a performance she seems to have repeated identically hundreds of times during the past year. She played much the same set as usual : most of LE plus Whole Lotta Love and Teen Spirit. I *really* liked Whole Lotta Love, the second half of the song departed completely from the original and drifted off into some amazing land of it's own, taking us all with it. The music was fantastic, it was hard to believe all that harmony and sound was coming out of just one person. My only problem with it was that, especially earlier on, some of the songs sounded like they were lumps of dough being squeezed through a long stocking... the tempo was constantly and widly varying... quite unlike the album and slightly off-putting to drummers like myself who like to groove with a song. :) She also told several stories and kept the crowd smiling. One about her "sainted" Grandmother, one about her first kiss and a few bits and pieces here and there, such as about her 'relationship with piano benches', and the one about listening to Jim Morrison in the basement when she was a little girl and her "thing" going ding-ding-ding-ding-ding! :) She looked a little worn-out, too... not surprising considering the travelling and talk shows around Oz she's been doing this past week. After the show, we waited out the back to get my CD signed, but when she finally appeared she was very apologetic and pleaded exhaustion to the 15 or so of us who were there. So we didn't press her and simply wished her good luck and a good sleep, and sent her off with a round of applause. She seems like quite a sweet person. At any rate, there it is. Back to the grindstone for me. P.S. Vickie, I don't know if you got my mail last week, but expect my HGP tape any day now. My selection is "Ordinary Angels" by Frente. P.P.S. SOLD OUT :( This completely surprised me, as shows around here almost _never_ sell out. Well, last Friday's little storm ended up dropping 25-30cm (10-12in) of the white stuff on Fort Collins. Yet Mother Nature is not through with us yet. It started snowing again this morning, and the storm is expected to reach blizzard conditions tonight. The expected accumulations in Fort Collins is another 25-50cm (12-24in)!! All of the local schools and many businesses have already closed for the day, with one notable exception. Here, at CSU, we NEVER close!! Cathy, you are welcome to take away as much snow from here as you wish! Now for my regular feature: Amendment Two tidbits! Denver Mayor Wellington Webb will be on the Arsenio Hall Show tonight, defending Denver's reputation against the boycotters. After all, 65% of Denver voters did vote against Two, and Denver did have its own gay rights law overturned. How many other unboycotted cities and states can claim that? By the way, Pres-elect Bill Clinton reminded me a lot of Mayor Webb during his campaign. Check him out! The town of Vail (Yes, _that_ Vail :) ) is enacting its own gay rights law, in the face of Amendment Two. I'm not a big fan of boycotts, but I do love the silly/ironic comments they bring out.... One boycott organization tried to explain that the boycott was not meant to punish individual Coloradans (Try telling that to the people who are losing real and prospective jobs) but to "awaken the oppressor" (which is individual Coloradans, as far as I can figure it out).... Many boycott supporters are already calling Denver the "capital of homophobia", only showing their own ignorance of one kind or other.... The city of Grand Junction CO figures it's safe from the boycott, since "Most people think we're in Utah, anyway.".... May your special day be filled with fun, love, and music. Whew! The storm has gotten even worse in just the short time since I last typed. The snow has turned very heavy and is blowing almost horizontally. Our department has been unofficially closed (CSU is still open!), but since I'm already here, and since I dread walking home through the storm, I might as well put in a full day of work. It's one of the days when I wish I had a fireplace to snuggle in front of. Sorry I've been so quiet lately. It's difficult to send mail out from Axon, so I generally don't even try. There's a song out by Messiah, a techno band, that samples (I'm told) a line from This Mortal Coil..."When I dream, you dream about me...." Does anyone know which This Mortal Coil album that line is from...i.e. the name of the song....??? The Messiah song is called Temple of Dreams. I want to thank Doug for all the posts about the situation in Colorado. I've been thinking of spending next summer out there at UC-Boulder, but I'm now re-evaluating that decision. I had always thought that Colorado was a hot bed of new ideas and of things to come. (My family is strongly involved in the "new age movement" and it seems that all the people are flocking to Colorado believing it will be the only safe place during the war. I don't know...but all this stuff going on down there is unexpected and good to know... :) Vickie!!! I'm going to be Greyhounding through Chicago again (during Xmas)... Are you going to be around???? (Vickie's home is the awesomest place to visit in Chicago...Where else can you go and be with wonderfully nice people and great music!!! ) I went out to California for a week (the end of October). My is it ever beautiful there...and their radio stations are a reason to move out there... Just thought I'd mention it. As far as music goes, I haven't really "discovered" anything new....I think that in September, when I spent over $300 on CDs without owning a CD player , I learned to restrict my buying. I did go to a neat concert- Erasure at the Beacon. I heard that this is their last tour...Any confirmations? Rumour has it that one has AIDS the other HIV positive... :( Well, I better get into the spring of work here..... Happy Birthday to everyone!!!!!
