Yesterday's draft was just a blast for this proto-Rockie (Rocky?) fan. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, it's _your_ loss. :) ) Also, long, long, long ago, Neile et al were planning sampler tapes for Celtic and Canadian artists, to be distributed through the tape dubbing project. I never chimed in to say it would be absolutely no problem for me. Well, 'tis true. :) When the tapes are ready, simply send them to me, and I will install them in the hallowed tape place next to my dubbing deck. Cathy asked: Doug, has there been any comment from gay organizations condemning the incidents of harrassment against the fundamentalists? And what do the fundamentalists have to say about the incidents against gay folk? Also, in my own somewhat paranoid musings, it has occurred to me that it is a fundamentalist tactic to 'stage' harrassment and then loudly cry "See? What did we try to tell you about those damn homos? They're *bad*, they deserve to be discriminated against! AND THEY'RE COMING FOR YOUR CHILDREN NEXT!" Actually, my comments were my opinion, gleaned from talking with friends, overhearing conversations (especially at the Loreena McKennitt concert in Boulder), and reading letters and articles in the newspapers. If it weren't so serious and hate-filled, it would be funny how similar the charges are on both sides, each charging the other with undermining the fabric of society. The conspiracy theorists and witch hunters of both sides are out in force. However, to more specifically answer your questions, organizations on both sides have been quiet on the issue. The Religious Right is not complaining about the harrassment, but revelling in it, gloating and boasting since the election. Instead of playing victims, they have been crying, "We won! So shut up and give up your disgusting lifestyle!", showing their true colors. Remember these are True Believers and complaints from the ungodly outside world only convince them that they are right. The problems I mentioned are for the people who are fundamentalist Christians or Colorado Springs residents, but not part of the "family values" movement. Some of them even voted against Amendment Two, but they have been as harshly attacked as the radicals. In the news, the city of Atlanta voted to ban all official travel to Colorado. Does anyone know if Atlanta has a gay rights law? Does close count? :) Years ago it was on my list of albums to buy, but, as usual, something else always seemed more appealing. Also, I always hesitate to correct someone more musically knowledgeable than me, such as Jeff, but I believe the band was named Wang Chung, not Wayne Chung, just in case someone is considering haunting the cutout bins. They were a band out of Los Angeles, and I too have heard the bits of the song here, there, and everywhere. In my opinion, it's a great pop song. Talking about songs used in commercials, the most ironic use is probably Los Angeles' use of Randy Newman's _I Love LA_ as an unofficial theme song. As is usual for Randy, the song is a sarcastic (Well, that's not the right word, but it's close) attack on LA, not boosterism. The LA official who chose that song was either completely naive, or had one of the more deliciously wicked senses of humor and irony I've ever heard. Originally a British band, though, called "Huang Chung" when they first started out. I've seen some EPs or maybe albums by a band by that name, with quite a few members. They then pared themselves down to 3 members, changed the spelling of the name, and released _Points on the Curve_, which spawned their first hit, which all of you probably remember, "Dance Hall Days." It's a good album, though not great. After that album was released, yet another member took off and the now-duo was approached by the director of _To Live and Die in LA_ for the soundtrack. The soundtrack features one song, "Wait" from the previous album; everything else is new. As for my typo on the band name, all I can say is that it was some sort of freudian slip; a friend of mine's ex-boyfriend is named Wayne and I had just been discussing him with another friend...;-) Jeff ======================================================================== Date: 18 Nov 92 18:11:59 EST From: MJM Subject: dental transcription - THE BOBS Here is the Bob's song about democracy and teeth. BTW, Mitch, this has been mentioned before, but: Your posts would be a *whole* lot easier and more enjoyable to read if you got into the habit (as I have) of ending each line (i.e. pressing or ) by about the 50th or 60th character. Every single one of your posts has the majority of its lines wrapping hideously making it a true burden on those of us unfortunate enough to have 80 column stiggling viewers. Yours are the *only* posts that regularly wrap. I entreat you to *please* use the key more liberally, if at all possible. To quote Christine Lavin, thank you, thank you, thank you. And now for the Bob's song you requested. It is called Democratic Process, written in 1984, and used on NPR presumably to head up some election coverage or other. DEMOCRATIC PROCESS (Madsen and Greene, Best of Breed Music) ------------------ (You could be president) (One nation under God) (You could be president) I went to my dentist's at 3rd and Market That wisdom tooth had to go I'd never seen my dentist so friendly before As he put me under he shook my hand and said "Congratulations" Was he saluting my courage? I woke up to the smell of cigar smoke I thought I heard my name being shouted I opened my eyes, I was onstage standing right next to the candidate Across the hall I saw banners with his name and mine My mouth was still numb but I smiled big I still had the bib around my neck One of the press photographers yelled "How about a couple without the bib?" And it's true Here I am This could never happen in Russia Look Ma, it's me restores my faith in the democratic process I've never understood party politics And I've never figured out how vice-president candidates are chosen Who would have believed it's from your dental records But it's true Here I am This could never happen in Russia Look Ma, it's me restores my faith in the democratic process Yeah it's true This could only happen in America Look Ma, it's me I've got some faith in the democratic process This could never happen in Russia Hi Mom. :-) I will take this opportunity to highly recommend all of the Bobs' music. Since I have myself joined an a cappella group, I have come to appreciate it even more (we are singing a few Bobs songs). In fact, I'll use a Bobs song for my HGP selection. Perhaps either Banana Love or Killer Bees. -mjm ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 19 Nov 92 1:21:12 EST From: WretchAwry Subject: Today's your birthday friend... I think you mean "Wang Chung". :) Anyway, I've got that album, plus some of their others ... I *really* like their song "Lullaby" ... Gee, it's been ages since they dug them out... I'll have to check them out again when I get home tonight. Thanks for the memory jolter, Jeff. > After all this fawning, I'm going to tell y'all not to rush out and buy > the album. Weren't we talking about Pamela Golden? ;-) Not me.... but I *will* be keeping my eyes open for her due to the recent discussion about her. Can someone attempt to describe her music? While on the subject of westerners using asian band names, there's a cool duo by the name of Cleopatra Wong down here... featuring the female drummer from the Gobetweens and another woman. Recommended... good tight pop with pretty vocals. On other notes... has anyone heard a recent song either called or by "Deep Forest" ? It uses lots of samples of South American jungle people singing and is rather catchy. It reminds me STRONGLY of Peter Gabriel, particularly the cries in the background... so much so that I thought it was him when I first heard it. And has anyone heard much of Wendy Matthews? She's an ex-pat Canadian who has been living and making records in Australia for quite some time. Her third (?) solo album has just recently come out. I've only heard the single but it's not bad. Sort of conventional modern r'n'b style music with flawless singing and a great voice. A short review I read recently in a paper said she would appeal to lovers of kd lang, Jane Siberry and... ...oh christ I've forgotten the third comparison. Anyway, perhaps some of you would be interested. The album is called "Lily". Only two days to Tori! Yip yay! Only one week til thesis due! Boo hiss! In a while, ectophiles. When I actually turned 30 it I'm turning 29 next month (hinthint), but I don't think I have to go through a crisis. I don't understand why so many people are afraid of turning 30 or 40. It just depends on the numerical system we're using. I'm 28 in our decimal system but I'm 34 octal (shudder). Mitch, you can proudly claim to be still 28 (hexadecimal, but you don't need to mention that :-) Also many people are afraid of the year 2000.
