The worst I've heard are letters in newspapers from some gloating bigots. (As an aside, Fort Collins apparently has a bad reputation among gay people, so there probably aren't many living here).... Statewide, one suicide mentioned Amendment Two as the last straw that pushed him over the edge. (He also had AIDS and a recent romantic breakup).... The Denver Post ran a long news story about the strength of the legal cases which will now be filed on Friday. My mind just numbs over the convolutions that the law has gone through, somehow deciding that the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution doesn't cover homosexuals (or everyone for that matter). The bottom line was that they felt that the cases would fail. Short of a Colorado vote to overturn the amendment, they felt the best option/chance was the passage of a gay rights bill in the US Congress.... On the positive side, a Denver Post opinion page writer who concentrates on Hispanic affairs promises to tell the story of prominent Hispanics who happen to be gay. Three cheers for him and his subjects! I feel that if people find out that most gays aren't what they are stereotyped to be, things can only get better.... I love irony, and I can't help but mention once especially delicious piece. Due to the boycott, a writer cancelled his appearance at a Denver bookstore, a bookstore which is being boycotted by the family value folks for hiring gays. Some people just can't win. :) ... When yesterday began, I assumed that my plan to catch the afternoon colloquium on "The Center and the Park: Reshaping the American City" would go ahead as planned, causing me to miss Loreena McKennitt's micro-concert (to coin a phrase ) and autographing session at Rizzoli Books, and incidentally keep unbroken my streak of nonattendance at local performances by ecto-relevant performers. As somebody once said, things change. The morning began with the discovery that the fragmentary promo I'd heard throu gh static the day before was what I thought it was, that Loreena would be inter viewed on WBEZ. She started by performing a W.B. Yeats poem, "The Stolen Child ," that she had set to music. The interviewer called it "truly an otherworldly sound, literally, literally." They segued into a discussion of the "Celtic Tradition. Loreena noted that in the last few years, she found out that the Celts were, in fact, a "motley collection of tribes" that began their migrati- on from central and eastern Europe as early as 500 B.C., with stops in such pla ces as Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Portugal; and that she had made use of this pan-Celtic history in _The Visit_ by incorporating Eastern and Middle Eastern influences like sitar, tambura, udu drum, et al. (For some reason, all this reminds me of a bad ethnic joke I once heard. It asserts that the reason that Scandinavia is so peaceful is that the aggressive people became Vikings, migrated across Europe, and ultimately settled in Irelan d. _Mutatis mutandis_, could it also be speculated that if these supposedly aggressive Irish also have East European roots, some of their forebears who stayed behind ultimately evolved into the latter-day civil warriors of the former Yugoslavia?) Anyway: Loreena continued that this was her first visit to Chicago; but that her harp, which she got secondhand in London, was manufactured here by Lyon and Healy, and that the previous day she had finally been able to indulge her long- standing ambition to visit the plant. At this point, my recording walkman experienced a glitch, and none of the rest of her appearance was recorded. Fortunately, transcriptions are available for a price by calling (312) 245-5420 (they take plastic). My thought was to swing by Rizzoli in the morning, to see if they had any of the pre-_Visit_ albums for sale. They did not. But somehow, the idea of stay- ing put in Water Tower Place (the large vertical mall in which Rizzoli is locat ed), rather than schlepping back to the university, began to seem attractive. The fact that I had missed two potentially attractive talks on campus the day before, and the Republic (and I) had continued to function nonetheless, added to the allure of making skipped intellectual presentations the streak to remain unbroken that day, and instead finally hear live some of the music I'd been reading about in these pages, and/or hearing on record. When the time came for Loreena's appearance, I headed back to Rizzoli, browsed a bit while waiting for the festivities to begin, and switched on my Walkman to timeshift _The Midnight Special_'s special show on Chicago humor. Finally she and her harp appeared, were introduced, and were applauded. I forget what her first number was, but she repeated her monolog about having discovered the true history of the Celts. She then sang what she called the "Reader's Digest" vers ion of "The Lady of Shallott." She said she based this characterization on th e fact that Tennyson wrote it with 20 verses, of which she did 15 on the album, five of which she was about to do, and thereupon did. She then encouraged the audience to catch her act at the Park West that evening, and the autograph session began. Somehow, I was moved to purchase a copy of the CD for my small but incrementall y growing collection of favorite recordings I already have on tape, and for my even smaller collection of creative works autographed by the creators (which at that time consisted principally of my signed copy of Linda Ellerbee's second book. So I did, notwithstanding that it cost $17.98 (more than the new, but no t improved, Warner list price for top-line artists, but arguably a relatively [if not absolutely] fairer price for _The Visit_ than for Madonna's _Erotica_). I queued up with the others to get my booklet signed. As the line moved, I tried to tear the shrinkwrap off, finally being reduced to using my teeth, and contemplated the internal paper skeleton of the longbox as I tried to extricate the jewel box. "What a piece of work is the longbox," I quipped to myself; arguably, two can play at the game of adapting Shakespeare :-). Finally, it wa s my turn. Loreena asked whose name to write on the booklet, and I asked where her previous albums could be procured. She said they could be ordered from her operation, whose address was in the booklet; that she was dickering with Warner for their reissue on that label (which at least has not done to her what Columbia did to Shawn Colvin); and that Rizzoli might be carrying them in a week or two. Also that they'd be on sale at the Park West that night. The whole thing having lasted only a little over a half hour, I decided to stic k around the store until the end of _The Midnight Special_, as a hedge against my recording getting creamed by the multipath distortion that is ubiqiuitous downtown. So I put in time browsing the art and other coffee-table books. The theme of my original game plan for the day was not lost altogether, for there w as a large stack of Spiro Kostof's book _The City Assembled: The Elements of Urban Form Through History_, through which, needless to say, I had the pleasure of thumbing. It costs the same as Madonna's _Sex_, but appears to adhere to a higher level of intellectual discourse. There also were a variety of books in the photography section whose erotic content was arguably of higher quality tha n La Ciccone's book. Ultimately, I got everything down on tape that I planned to for the afternoon, and headed home. At home, I finally got to play _The Visit_ in full digital splendor. Having to tend to other things while I listened, I was unable to follow along with the printed lyrics, but these nonetheless came across more clearly than they had on tape. As I listened to "All Souls Night," with its images of nocturnal dancing amid fires on hills, the thought hit me that the most tangible proof of Loreena's becoming a headliner will be if Weird Al Yankovic, in his inimitab le style, retrofits this song into a spoof on the mythopoetic men's movement (as if Joe Bob Briggs' recent book hasn't run that idea into the ground already :-) ). Today, I finally listened to my tape of _The Midnight Special_, and was pleased to discover that they played Loreena's cover of "Greensleeves," and exhorted listeners to go over to Rizzoli. It occurs to me that a perfect thematic set f or that show would have been Loreena's version of that song, followed by Flande rs and Swann's unique spin on it. To build on Angelos' metaphors regarding the impact of Tori's, Happy's and Diamanda's music, I suppose Loreena could be characterized as a hot water bottl e that you can apply while nursing your wounds from listening to the other thre e. I even found her soothing after listening to Suzanne Vega's "Fat Man and Monkey," which they played at the end of NPR's interview with Mitchell Froom which immediately precedes the Loreena fragment on my tape. I can only imagine the value of Loreena's music in decompressing after the likes of Diamanda. IN OTHER NEWS... Also, I grew up in Dortmund, where it's about 7 breweries Obscure region? I thought Bavaria was one of the better-known parts of the country--arguably better known to the uninformed American than Dortmund, the _Land_ containing which I don't know offhand. A sidelight on the beer thing: A couple of weeks ago, I decided to commemor- ate Jessica's birthday (would that I'd known then that I'd changed the course of s.c.g. :-) ) by going to the Berghoff (the premier German restaurant down- town) for a weissbier. The only kind the bar listed was what I think was called Erdinger weiss. It had almost none of the things that supposedly make weissbier unique--it was served with a tall, contoured glass, but had no solid yeast in it, and the flavor seemed not very different from a lot of other cold, imported bottled beers. On a later visit, I noticed they also had weissbier on draft, which for sure wouldn't contain any yeast. Happy quaffing. Should it give you a hangover, remember that not far from the brewery capital of the world, Dortmund, there is Leverkusen, which can lay at least some claim to being the aspirin capital of Europe. I leave it to others to decide which substance is better at giving fast-fast-fast relief from the kicks, shocks, etc that come from listening to Diamanda, Tori, Happy and the rest :-). I would like to know > more if anyone HAS more information ... I'm just passing along the > details. > > How can a state do something which seems to me, fundamentally > unconstituional?? Speaking from the People's Republic of Boulder ... :-) First, please, please, please ... don't come to the conclusion that the entire state is poisonous! We fought long and hard against a law that not only (gasp!) allows a majority to determine the rights of a minority, but (gag!) presumes that civil rights are something of which there is a finite supply, and the GLB population is somehow taking these rights away from other "true" (to use CFV's terminology) minorities. Many prominent citizens, esp. from the black and disabled populations, spoke out against this very loudly; but it wasn't enough to counter the influence of the conservative, patriarchal white males that hold most of the power in the state. In particular, PLEASE DO NOT join in the suggested boycott against the *entire* state of Colorado! There are lots of great people here, and particularly in places like Aspen, Boulder, and Denver, where the vote ranged from 2-1 to 3-1 against this insanity. Visit Colorado, but be very picky about WHERE you visit. If you're planning on visiting, ask if the owners of resorts, hotels, etc. you're visiting, voted for Amendment #2; if they did, look elsewhere. This legislation originated from Colorado Springs. That community is possibly the most reactionary, right-wing community in the country: it is home to 37 (that's thirty-seven) of the far-right "Christian" groups. Colorado Springs has been a bigoted community for a very long time (when my mother was growing up there in the 20s, the "Negro mammies" lived on the other side of the railroad tracks and only crossed them to do maid service in the big homes along Nevada Avenue and elsewhere; and things haven't changed much), but in the past 10 years, it has become the nation-wide home to many far-right political/religious groups. Amendment #2 (the homosexuality issue) was only one of several far-right issues on the ballot; among other problems, the passage of Amendment #1 and failure of Amendment #6 mean that the public school systems will be running on fumes in the coming year, cuz the fundies don't like anything having to do with public education. Fortunately, enough voters were smart enough to see through Amendment #7, the issue to transfer monies to wealthy parents sending their kids to private schools, and parochial schools, by issuing vouchers: they killed that one. One reason this could happen here, is that an amendment to the constitution only requires a simple majority, rather than 2/3 as in many other places. CFV ran a very nasty, one-sided campaign, implying that all gays are child molesters, etc. Since most of the population (esp. in rural areas) has never known gay people, they took the bait and voted for the measure. Suits on this mess are in the pipeline. Unfortunately, if it gets all the way to the Supreme Court, the fundies will probably win there due to the way Reagan and Bush have stacked the court. I'll be posting a copy of a recent article about the Colorado far-right on the net in the near future, and will CC: it to profemen when I do. I remember listening to it in Greg's car on some road-trip, and despite the skips (:) ) it made it to my to-buy-when-I-can-afford-to list. I am impressed by both the breadth of styles, and the vocals. Great CD!! Cavedogs-Soul Martini. Their first CD(Joy rides for shut-ins) was brilliant. This continues the spirit of Beatlesque power-pop with a grunge. One of my fave boston bands, which (like braindance :( ) no longer exist. The Story-Grace in Gravity. After all the raves here, and a brief (albeit disappointing) listen I decided to splurge. I still think they want to be Suzanne Vega when they grow up, but at least the songs are good enough to warrant their existence. Needs more time to get used to. Pamela GOlden-happens all the time. $1.99 for this gem is amazing. Thanks to all who recommended it. I think it's pretty good, a little too ethereal but yet interesting. But it's kind of short. He became known to many people through his collaborations with Peter Gabriel, so you've probably heard him already, or seen him live with PG. Listen to the voice at the end of "In your eyes" on "So" if you can. Or does "Shaking the tree" ring a bell? :) Most of his lyrics are in Wolof, being the lingua franca of Senegal and Gambia, with bits in english and french. Someone called him "the king of worldmusic", and he's pretty good in bridging african and western music. His current album "Eyes open" is excellent, adding a bit jazz to his music.
