Today (11-26) is Pat Tessitore's birthday. He won't see this, but HB anyway. For the people who don't know who this very important dude is... He's the owner of Cathedral Studios in Rensselaer, NY, just outside of Albany. This is the place where all of Happy's music has been recorded. Way back in 1984 Happy's mother arranged for her to start working there as an apprentice engineer, to provide a start into the recording business. Happy wanted to learn the technical side of the recording process so it was perfect for her. Pat asked Happy if she wanted to record her own music while learning the equipment. That's how it all began. Many of the songs on I and II are exercises to get to know the equipment, and how to do things like overdubs and echoes and whatnot. They really weren't recorded with the intention of ever being released on albums for the public, just to get the songs on tape and learn the ropes. (Pardon me while I swoon in awe)...... Pat recognized her talent right away and encouraged her to continue recording her music, knowing that she had no money to pay for recording time. He would check the schedule and whenever there was free time between sessions, he would call Happy and she would race over to the studio to work on another song. Happy met Kevin at Cathedral. Pat introduced them. OK, so she had all these songs on various tapes and Kevin knew what they sounded like because Pat played some of them for him. Kevin had started his label (Aural Gratification) to release his own music on cassette, and encouraged Happy to gather up all of her songs and he would release them. There turned out to be more than would fit on one cassette, so Vol. I and Vol. II were born at the same time. Pat continued to give Happy free time to work on songs and still does, to this day. Warpaint was so cheap to make because of the kindness and support of Pat Tessitore, who waived most studio fees because he believes in Happy. This paragraph is confidential to Ecto. H&K will pay him back when Happy has broken through and has the money. He's an important name in Ectocyclopedia Britannica because without him, well, none of us would be here now. I love chains, don't you? Happy's mum & dad Happy Rhodes Pat Tessitore....enabled Happy to record the music Kevin Bartlett...put that music onto cassette Dore Stein.......took the music to San Francisco Bob Davis........received music from Dore Stein and sent to John Reimers Kate Bush........connection between Bob Davis and John Reimers John Reimers.....my friend who turned me on to Happy Kate Bush........connection between John Reimers and Vickie Vickie Mapes.....yours truly Kate Bush........connection between Vickie & Doug Alan Doug Alan........started Love-Hounds Kate Bush........connection between Doug and Jessica Jessica Dempski..LH reader and main Ecto Goddess This could go on and on if I were to include everybody's mom's & dads and their mom & dads and....but this is the basic chain that led us all here to this fuzzy blue wonderland. It may seem silly to put Kate in there 4 times, but without the Kate connections, we wouldn't be here either. Anyway, Happy Birthday to Pat Tessitore! Vickie ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 26 Nov 91 21:50 CST From: vickie@chinet.chi.il.us (Vickie Ann Mapes) Subject: HGP (& gifs) Vickie here. Re: the HGP, the ideas and involvement seem to be working beautifully. I'm the luckiest one because I don't have to choose my song until the last moment. Haha! It looks like another 100 minute tape will be the ticket to HappyGiftyness, but we won't know for sure until all the people involved give their songs and timings to Klaus. People must hurry and decide. Timing-wise, getting the tape to Happy is the most important thing, you all will receive your tapes after Happy has gotten hers. Klaus and Martin, thanks for the quickgif sketch. It's a perfect idea for the cover. We have uudecode (and encode) so if anyone has anymore gifs like that, I would like to have them. We've been trying out various gif viewers for our Amiga, we're using hamgif and Turbogif right now. Martin opythons: > ('twould be nice to have a regular FTP site we could leave the GIFs at... > ... hint, hint, nudge nudge, wink wink,... Yes, when Jessica has more room on the system, we have some gifs ready to be put up. Chris scanned in "Alice" the hero of "He's Alive" and also the Happy Ectoera photo. He scanned one of me too, so if we really are going to maintain an Ectophile gif archive, I'll be in there. It's too bad text doesn't scan well, because I have lots of things I could add, such as Bartlett/Rhodes flyers. I was also thinking that if/when there's room, I could add a lot of things to a Misc. file, as was suggested by..Klaus (?) such as the interviews and reviews and other tidbits such as Happy's explaination of "The Issue Is" and her Desert Island Discs. I have all these things in a separate file so they're easy to find. Back to the HGP, Chris has offerred to work on a 3D computer generated computer, keyboard and modem. He already has the puter and keyboard built for another project and will add in the modem, headphones and cassettes (with one of Happy's covers texture-mapped on the top one) and the wording already discussed. "Blue" screen is easy, "Fuzzy" is much more difficult, so he might end up having white letters on a blue screen, blurred out to seem fuzzy (should make Meredith feel right at home!). He'll work on it this weekend down in Kansas City. It might not work out, it will be most difficult getting the file out to film so that multiple cassette covers can be made. If he takes it to a professional graphics service bureau, it will probably cost around $35.00. It's worth it if the image turns out to be as cool as I think it will. We'll see how things look after this weekend. -Ms. Tapedeck- ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 26 Nov 91 21:53 CST From: vickie@chinet.chi.il.us (Vickie Ann Mapes) Subject: Things floating about my brain Vickie here. I talked to H&K a while ago. Angelos, Happy is also very broken up about Freddie Mercury's death. She faxed me a short eulogy of her own to post here in Ecto and I'm sending it in a separate message. Welcome back Angelos, did you and Tom Johnson get a chance to get together while you were in LA? ---------------- To Dan the St.Paul Man, KTCZ is playing "Feed The Fire" so call up and request it. Kevin said that besides Electric Fetus, which Cathy already mentioned, Applause in St. Paul (and the Mpls store) will have Warpaint in about a week. Kevin said that KTCZ has listed FTF as an airplay cut in the industry magazine _Radio & Records_. I've never seen a copy of this mag but I have heard of it. ---------------- Rehearsals for live dates start either Dec. 2 or the following week. They will be going to see a keyboard player this Friday to hear him play and ask if he wants to audition. There won't be any live dates until at least February, so poor Klaus, I'm sorry that the timing didn't work out. Happy has been asked to play in Philadelphia either the 21st or the 28th of March. The promoter is very reputable and will be up to him what the final date will be. The band will play at the University of Philadelphia Museum Auditorium. Of course, as everything is firmed up you'll be kept informed. That's about all the news for now. ---------------- Thanks to Woj, Klaus, & Mitch for their support of Laurie Freelove, I'm so glad you all like her too. My favorite songs on the album are "Heaven On Earth" and "White Hail" though I really like them all. I'm sorry to hear about the hecklers at the show woj attended, it's such a shame when talented, interesting performers are treated that way. I cringe to think that might happen at a Happy show sometime. Woj, thanks for the Green Linnet address. So cool that you found Lisa Germano's CD. Mine and Kiri's copies don't have any cover art (they were promos) so I don't know the picture you mentioned. Lisa's address is: Lisa Germano _On The Way Down From The Moon Palace_ P.O.Box 30087 Indianapolis, IN 46230 "Screaming Angels..." is one of my favorite songs too, a wonderful instrumental! I love every single one of the songs, but a few other favorites are "Hangin' With A Dead Man," "Dig My Own Grave," and all the instrumentals. I also highly, highly recommend it. Needless to say, I join in the chorus of raves for The Innocence Mission. I truly love both albums, the first maybe a tiny bit more. "I Remember Me" is one of my favorite songs too. Meredith, I have that David Letterman show on video... Mark Carroll used a bit from "And Hiding Away" in a recent post. Karen got the phrase "flap and fly" from Jane Siberry. Trivia note. Brian, did you go see The Innocence Mission in concert? What did you think? Greg, did you go see Marta Sebestyen? What did you think? Did anyone besides woj get a chance to see Laurie Freelove? Martin, I too think you would really like Robyn Hitchcock, he's quite warped and fun. Very different, but just as warped and just as fun, are Camper Van Beethoven (now sadly defunct :-( boo hoo), a group that I've had a major crush on for years. Chris hates them, so I have to wait till he leaves the apartment to play their music :-). --------------- Greg, I'm still waiting for your translation of... > Herzlichen Glueckwuensch zum Geburtstag, Claudia! :) --------------- I grew up with dogs, so I love them too. I never had a cat until I was grown up. My dogs were Collies (many over the years), a Chickanese and a Cocker Spaniel named Missy (which brings to mind a limerick "I once knew a bitch named Missy, who's posts were exceedingly pissy...uh, forget it) and other various wonder mutts over the years. I haven't had a dog in years, our lifestyle pretty much prohibits it now. --------------- Re: the Peachy Sensual World shot again, Chris points out that it's not sand running through Kate's fingers in the original shot. The idea is ashes(earth)...flower...fruit...ashes(earth) = The Sensual World. --------------- Martin, your Helicopter story was great! You have to rank as the only Ectophile who's had a Police gunship shine a spotlight at you! Wow! Say, Martin, Meredith and I are trying to get another Aussie to join Ecto. His name is Graham and he's never heard Happy, but we think he'd like her. How much did you send H&K for postage to Australia? I sent him a FAQ, but didn't know what to tell him about the p&h costs. --------------- Like Doug, some of my posts take a long time to write and they sit cooking for inspiration. I've got a couple in the oven right now on the subjects Steve just brought up, but for now... Steve V says: > I must congratulate Vickie for having the guts to reveal several > deeply personal items in gaffa in defense of her opinions. I had > been paying some attention to the debate between Larry (deLuca?) > and Melissa Caldwell; I read Melissa's following post (which > didn't appear to be a reply to Vickie's post in the same digest > but which had all the things Vickie is flaming her for) and my > reaction will be in an upcoming Love-Hounds digest. Thanks Steve. It's going to be rough, and I appreciate all the support I can get. Doug writes: > Sigh! Vickie and Steve indicate something burning again in .gaffa, but > my newsfeed is still a frustrating four to five days behind the real > world. I'm impatiently waiting to find out what sparked this one, as > Vickie and Steve gave no clue except that the usual suspects were > involved. This one starts with Melissa Caldwell and will end with everybody getting into the act. In short, it's a two-tier flame war about... a) is there such a thing as "psychological pressure/force" and can it be harmful? Melissa maintains that there's no such thing, and even if there were, it can't be harmful unless the receiver lets it be. She says it's just weakness of character that permits someone to let themselves be hurt by other's psychological games. b) I flamed Melissa for being insensitive toward Larry DeLuca, who posted a very personal story to illustrate how he was harmed by psychological force. I posted my own personal story to back up Larry. It's yet another mess between the cynics and the emotionals. I was still in the midst of a censorship flame war with Ben Haller, but that's kind of fallen by the wayside. I've never completely finished answering his last post. Then again, I'm still confused about his philosophy, so I don't really know what to say. Non-gaffians must think that rec.music.gaffa/Love-Hounds are full of nothing but flame wars and that's not true. There have been a lot recently though, but I think they are about important subjects such as censorship, the value of emotions, and common courtesy toward other human beings. Not that I'm an expert on any of those subjects, but I still feel like speaking up and presenting an emotional point of view. My "logic" is always flawed, so I end up getting burned to a crisp, but I still keep posting. I don't know why. Enough of flame wars! Since lots of people in America are going home for the Thanksgiving (oh thank you Indians for your land) Holidays, I'll say now, have a safe trip and a good time and don't stuff yourself too much!
