The electronic FW Reading Group is a new use for an old mailing list. In the last 3 months we've compiled maybe 250 pages of annotations covering a mere 5 pages of James Joyce's 628-page masterpiece of obscure wit and insight, *Finnegans Wake* (1939). FW has been widely held to have a large component of randomness, for most of its words are Joycean coinages, but we have found that every tiny twist builds with awesome discipline on a brilliant framework of interrelated motifs (whew!). Big fun, for this boyo. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- It's been such a hard week, so much crying, I no longer see a future. ...They took the game, right out of it... I seem to remember having seen the Kate-with-Peach shot in Homeground a couple issues back- or don't you count that as a magazine, Vickie? :) Jessica, when you mentioned you had a peach tattooed on your butt, my first thought was Forbidden Fruit. Am I right? :) Martin, just wait. Woj will explain to you who Robyn Hitchcock is, won't he, Mr. Fegmaniax Anonymous? ;> I can assure you you'll at least enjoy his stuff, if not go nuts over it... you seem to be effectively warped. :) Funny, I've always liked "Wrong Century", and "Phobos" had to grow on me... +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Meredith Tarr "We let the weirdness in..." mtarr@eagle.wesleyan.edu -Kate Bush +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ======================================================================== Date: 25 November 1991 15:39:28 CST From: Subject: Miscellany On the basis of Vickie's laudatory review of her Chicago concert last week , I bought Laurie Freelove's album, "Smells Like Truth," over the weekend and was in the process of giving it a preliminary listen today when my batteries ran out. Be that as it may, it seems quite good so far. When I first glanced at the cover picture of the artist, I couldn't decide whether she looked more like David Bowie or Billy Idol :-); after looking at it more carefully, her distinctiveness became more apparent. The same goes for the recording itself. The music, while mildly dissonant, is not unpleasant at all. I have yet to ponder the lyrics carefully, but they seem to be in the same category of thinking-people's words as those of Happy, Kate, etc. Cat lovers among us will enjoy _French for Cats: All the French Your Cat Will Ever Need_ by Henri de la Barbe (a/k/a Henry Beard) (Villard, 1991). It's a quick read, and a hilarious one. In a recent exchange of email with Jorn, Del Palmer was among those suggested as a running mate for KaTe (along with Happy and Ken Livingstone) on a hypothetical ticket for 1992 (this in connection with my idea for a poster of Kate with the imprimatur "Bush '92"). This leads me to yet another ques- tion: who's Del Palmer? I am making a tape of "dog" songs for Jo Anna (don't ask why!). So far I've only got Kate's "Hounds of Love", Jane's "Everything reminds me of my dog", Pet Shop Boys' "I want a dog", and I've decided to throw in Karen Finley's "Lick it!" . Would appreciate any other suggestions. Excuse me while I type in these lines of the last song he sang: Empty places- what are we living for Abandoned places- I guess we know the score On and on, does anybody know what we are looking for... ... My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies Fairytales of yesterday will grow but never die I can fly my friends The show must go on... I've never been so depressed since I found out that John Lennon was shot... Angelos PS,On a happier note LA was really wonderful! Travelling around left no time for record shopping though. I loved Westwood village, and the Promenade in Santa Monica! As for Santa Barbara there areno words to describe its beauty! ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 25 Nov 91 19:45:25 EST From: woj@remus.rutgers.edu (woj) Subject: ectophobia hmmm...all sorts of stuff to write about it. and only the first bit is even peripherially happy-related (which is why it's the first bit natch :) klaus - i sent you a message about contributing to the happy gift project, but it seems that mail to you from here isn't going to happen (i've had problems getting to you before so i'm not surprised). the song that i want to add to the tape is "KaTe" by the sonny sharrock band - an improvisation based on the theme of "wuthering heights". some new stuff (well, lots o'new stuff). i tracked down a copy of lisa germano's _on the way down from the moon palace_ and i like it. it seems a bit inconsistant at times, but i suppose that is to be expected from a debut. i'm particularly fond of the "noiser" pieces like "screaming angels dancing in your garden", but all of the songs have a fresh innocence about them that i find appealing (and i adore the picture of her on the inside of the booklet). methinks this is one worth looking into if you can find it. vickie - did you say that people could order it from her? second, i also picked up laurie freelove's _smells like truth_ and am utterly enchanted by it. some of you have probably already herad her work with two nice girls, but this is nothing like it at all - she's wrapped her raw vocals in mystery with bass clarinets, lyricons, strange percussion and wiry guitars. a most beautiful and compelling album. granted, as i mentioned, her voice is raw and, in some cases, extrememly harsh, but that reflects the anger that drives her music. highly recommended. serendipitously, i got the opportunity to see her perform last saturday night as well. i was down in philly visiting ye olde college roommate and while paging through the city paper, i noticed that her, boo hewerdine (who helped produce _smells like truth_) and the blood oranges were playing at jc dobbs. seeing that nothing else was happening that night, it wasn't too hard to con- vince ken to go, so we went. the show was listed as "boo hewerdine, the blood oranges and laurie freelove", but as it turned out, the blood oranges (a downhome countryish rock band that is a whole lot of fun and from boston - though the two are not necessarily linked unless you are greg) were the headliners. no matter, as laurie's 45 minute or so set was still very good (despite a number of hecklers in the back of the bar). she was able to recreate that same mystery on stage that is on the album and it was just as compelling. if you get the chance, do go see her perform - it's certainly worth it. incidentially, she closed with "song to the siren" and while i didn't initially like her rendition of that from the album, it was much better live - and now that i think about it, probably more faithful to the original than any other cover of it i've heard (guess i'd be listening to the this mortal coil version way to much...gotta get that tim buckley album some day....). one other relatively new release. from 1989, the parachute men's _earth, dogs and eggshells_. this is jangly guitar rock with female vocals by someone named fiona. i do not think that this is the same fiona who has had a couple popular release - different voices for one thing. :) this is also much more listenable as far as my ear is concerned: smooth, autumnal feel to it as well (and as you probably all know already, autumn music is my favorite kind of music). which brings me to the final point. green linnet records, a great american record label that releases domestically a number of contemporary and traditional celtic performers is having a vinyl blowout sale. they're giving up on the black slabs o'sound and going digital and as a result are clearing out the storehouse of all the left over vinyl. so they have *excellent* prices on a wide selection of stuff ($4 apiece). for a catalog and a list, send them a note (and maybe a dollar or two to be nice) at: green linnet records 70 turner hill road new canaan, ct 06840 my order came in today: dan ar bras' _acoustic_, the two releases from altan and capercaille's _crosswinds_ and _sidewaulk_ (replacing worn out cassette dubs). all for the price of one and a half cds. neat, eh? incidentially, the dan ar bras record is wonderful. he's a breton guitarist who's worked with folk like duck baker (american guitarist) and (i think) alan stivell (yeah, i'm sure he did, but i forget on which album). very beautiful stuff...mellow and soothing. he's also done an instrumental of "my lagan love" which is available on the kicking mule release _irish reels, jigs, hornpipes and airs_. um...oh, "smells like truth" (the song not the release) features a bullroarer and a didjeridu (just thought that all of you should know). ah...one last thing (i hope greg has read this far). greg, have you ever heard of a band from your area called the drop nineteens? they are in the lush/mbv vein - i saw them open for chapterhouse and was wondering if they have any releases available. think that's it for now (which means that i'll think of something else a few more minutes from now - after i've sent this off). woj ======================================================================== To join ecto, please send electronic mail to the following address: ecto-request@athos.rutgers.edu To have your thoughts included in the next issue, send mail to: ecto@athos.rutgers.edu To subscribe to "Ecto", the printed fanzine, send $8 to: Ecto PO Box 11291 New Brunswick, NJ 08906 Ecto is issued 8 times/year, and will include photos and as much material from non-net members as we can get!
