Date: Fri, 22 Nov 91 2:22:44 CST I just got this forwarded message from ecto today from T.Johnson... National Suicide Day is January 3. Well...I protest!! January 3rd is MY birthday. And whoever came up with that one wasn't thinking straight... geez, bad horoscopes on Jan 3 the last 2 years, no celebrity b-days and now National Suicide Day...wasn't there anything good, you can think of that happened (or make it up.) (Save a shark spirit) Jeanne sing another account temporarily because the path out of Chinet seems to be disabled. I've mailed numerous things to Ecto and to gaffa in the past few days and nothing has gotten out. It seems to be a problem, not with Chinet, but anyther system further on down the line. Pooh! Anyway, I'll keep sending tests through Chinet and hope that whatever's wrong will get fixed soon. I mailed the birthday list a couple of times, and sent it to Jessica, then, in desperation, posted it in rec.music.misc hoping and Ectophile would see it and post it in Ecto. I'm getting Ecto and e-mail (I'm NOT ignoring you all, really) just fine, both the loose mail and the digests. I am keeping up, I just can't answer anything. When whatever needs fixing gets fixed, all my mail will probably show up at once, some of it horribly out-of-date, so, sorry in advance of that happening. Hi to the new folks, including Claudia. Good to have you here! Good luck Jessica! David BE, I highly recommend Nordisk Sang. If you ever get my e-mail, there are more details there, but if you like traditional music, buy it! Barry, Kate's not a witch. Kirsty is wonderful, and you have to go to England to buy Mary Coughlin's last two albums, but her first is available on Green Linnett Records, does anyone here have the address? I can't find it. More details on Mary if I ever get back on Chinet! Argh! I posted about Jennifer Fergusson in Ecto, gaffa, rec.music.misc, cd and folk all at the same time. Only the newsgroup postings appeared. I don't know why these things always happen to me, I'm a magnet for them. The problem affects out katefans account too, not just vickie, but it's not Chinet, because I can mail from one account to the other with no problems and mail is getting through to us just fine. OK, I'll shut up now, but I jsut wanted to let everyone know that a)I'm still alive and b)I didn't forget Alan and kevin's birthdays (btw, Claudia, the list that will appear ((probably appear)) won't have you on it, but you're added now) and c)to welcome the newbies on the block So, welcome newbies, I'm Vickie (usually, though not today) and I always complain about my system. Hello! To make this post somewhat worthwhile, I did talk to Kevin today, I called to wish him a Happy Birthday, and he said that they received the new batch of Warpaint CDs today (Thursday) and that backorders will start going out tomorrow. Yay! They already have hundreds on backorder, so I imagine the Albany Post Office will not be happy to see Kevin :-) About as happy as the UPS guy was while carrying boxes with over 2000 CDs into H&K's house! No other news at the moment, they were rushing to leave to go out to dinner. I have no idea how this will end up reading, I am totally clueless to this system (I can't even press return!) so if it's all weirded out at least maybe it will come out halfway readable. See ya! Vickie ps, sorry about the typos, but I haven't the faintest idea how to fix them. Times like this make me really actually like vi, which took me ages to get used to. ======================================================================== Date: Fri, 22 Nov 91 02:54:09 EST From: Nimue - Gwragedd Annwn Subject: new Enya and The Gods Must Be Crazy II sndtrack Just heard the new Enya - while I was playing the entire album on my show. My first quick thoughts are that it is wonderful - typical Enyaish lovliness. I also gave the soundtrack to TCMBCII a listen and I love it! It's kinda ethno/jazz and considering im not the greatest fan of jazzish music I just think this thing is GREAT! :) I never saw TCMBCII but TCMBCI was the funniest thing i have ever seen in my life - it is set up as a documentary and you go through the whole movie wondering when the real movie is going to start - but it never does - only this fantastic docu-weirdness thing creates itself. The movie is just plain silly, but I have never laughed so hard in my life! *well except for the mew tape* WOW this music is really neat....just bongo/sticks/keyboard synth right now....wonderful! anyway i better stop raving..oh one more thing...heard a kinda of interesting female vocalist tonight in a band called The Millions..it was ok..on the cover they compared her to a mix of Debbie Harry and Kate *i was kinda insulted :)* but actually she sounded more like Jane in a couple tracks. Oh and another band to look out for _Curve_ they are more rocky but are are = have some good material. well back to the funland kIrI ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 19 Nov 91 19:43 CST From: vickie@chinet.chi.il.us (Vickie Ann Mapes) Subject: Jennifer Fergusson's "Suburban Hum" Vickie here. Jeff Burka asked about this song (he's been very lucky to have heard it) and here's what I know. I wrote this up originally just to post here in Ecto, but I made it a bit more formal, to post in rec.music.misc in hopes that someone might have heard of Jennifer or the album it's on. ........................................................................... Jennifer Fergusson-Suburban Hum This track is on a compilation album called _Forces Favorites_ (subtitled "Eleven Songs by South Africans Supporting the End Conscription Campaign") It was released in 1986 by Rounder Records (Rounder 4023) which I have on LP. I've never seen a CD of it, though it might exist. The outside jacket sleeve states "Lyrics enclosed" but I bought this album at a used record store and the inside sheet was not in the album. Not only do I not have the lyrics, but I imagine that further information about each artist on the album was probably also included. In short, I know absolutely nothing about Jennifer Fergusson (this is the correct spelling of her last name, I was incorrect in my earlier posts) and have no idea what else she's done. She wrote this song, but I have no idea if it was specifically written for this album or comes from one of her own. If this song is indicative of her usual quality, I would not hesitate to buy any albums she might have released in South Africa. Musically, the song goes through many changes, from simple and stark, almost talk-song, to a very anthem-like chorus, to her throwing in a bit of "Onward Christian Soldiers" to devestating effectiveness. The lyrics are searing and sad. The song is about growing up oblivious to the apartheid of South Africa, and then coming to awareness, and trying to shake off the apathy that threatens her new awareness. "I no longer know just where to place my hand, I'm this white girl white in a darkening land. I still care about the future,...I'm still caught up in desire for a fine time that is good and going to last a long time." She sings of a little black girl running down the street, running from "the bullet that her daddy's going to meet" while high-class white women are drinking tea and pretending that there are no problems in South Africa. There is so much going on in this song, yet it is very emotional and never fails to send shivers up my spine and I always cry when I hear it. Jennifer's voice is very beautiful and soulful, and she coveys painful emotion without being overwrought. I would buy the CD of this album in a second just for this one song. I've hardly listened to the rest of the album at all. This song is by far the best (IMHO) and most interesting, and a much higher quality than any of the other songs on the album. ........................................................................... Greg, you might be able to come up with some info if you're willing to make a couple of phone calls. Rounder Records is in Cambridge, MA (the album gives an address of One Camp Street, 02140) and perhaps someone still works there who is familiar with this album. I have to admit, that as long as I've had this album, and as much as Jennifer intrigues me, I've never gone to the trouble of contacting Rounder for more information. It's mainly because of the long-distance charges, but also laziness. Jeff has gotten me started thinking about wanting more information now, and I'm going to see what I can find out. Greg, would you be willing to give the folks at Rounder a call? If so, mention "radio airplay" because I've played this song many, many times on my show. Mark Semich and David B-E, your names were on my main list, but I forgot to transfer them to my mini-update list. You're both set a go on the Ecto Sig, no problems. -------- Glad eveyone got a kick out of Jon's "review" of the tape I sent him. I think I only put 2 Warpaint songs on it. I can't remember, but I'm pretty sure that they were "Words..." and "In Hiding" and I may have put a 3rd. I wish I had written them down for myself. Court, the Subject Line he used at the time was "Jon Does Happy" so I don't know if it would qualify as a review actually. I read the thing to Happy over the phone and we had a good snort over his lines "Vickie and Happy will be so upset" HA! Btw, she's never heard LPD. I found an interesting syncronicity a while back. In a magazine that reviewed Warpaint (I posted it) directly across the page from Happy's name was an ad for LPD in concert. Meredith, I don't think Jon liked it. In our e-mail exchange I brought up his referring to Happy's music (in another post) as "brainless emotionalism" and he stood by his remarks. Fine. And besides, he posted that he had given the tape away. -------- Vishal! I was on the floor howling at what you said in rec.music.gaffa! > I have received several queries about locating Kate GIFs in the archives. > Sorry I didn't respond sooner - I have been busy on Ecto (the Happy Rhodes > mailing list :) and I don't read Gaffa on a regular basis any more thanks > to the stupid flame wars here. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Speaking of Love-Hounds, things seemed to have died down now on the censorship issue. Maybe it's time to start the discussion up in here, where I know someone won't say "I spit in your face" to me. I was shocked and amused at the same time at that one. In all the flame wars I've ever been in, no one's ever said *that* to me! What *would* the PMRC think of Happy? Martin's Christian friend provides a hint. ---------- Justin, since you're the Latin Dude, what does "Terra Incognita" actually translate as? ---------- Jorn (who, listen up gals, is *very cute*!) give particulars: > Cat: Perdita the Himalayan beauty (ask Vickie) I'll confirm this. Jorn has _*THE*_ _*MOST*_ _*BEAUTIFUL*_ cat I've *EVER* seen!! ^^^ ^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^ > Computer: T1000 at home, Mac at work You have a Terminator at home? Cool! Does he give you any trouble? ---------- Doug, I missed seeing the news yesterday, but I when flipping channels I did hear about 2 hostages being released. Was one of them Thomas Sutherland? I know one was Terry Waite, congrats to the Brits! Doug, thanks for your thanks and you're most welcome. Your post was wonderful and I'll write more about it in another post. ---------- Martin mentioned a gif file for Ectophiles. When Jessica has more disk space, there's one that can be transferred from the Love-Hounds gif file. Taken in London, it shows 21 Love-Hounds, 7 of whom are now Ectophiles. (Jorn, Meredith, Larry, Gregory, Justin, and me. Chris too.) Ron Hill took this photo outside the Ann Elizabeth House just before we went to go eat at the Italian restaurant. He took another one the next day at Homeground Towers, but I couldn't find the gif of it. Greg, do you know if it's there in the archives under a strange name perhaps? I ask because it's one of my favorite photos that Ron Hill took. I hate having my picture taken, but I really like that one of me. I couldn't find the gif though. There are 3 gifs that we found of the same AEHouse Love-Hounds group shot. ftp-able from wiretap.spies.com 1. love-hounds/kb/pix/pix.hill/lovehnds.gif 2. love-hounds/kb/pix/pix.hill/lovename.gif 3. love-hounds/kb/pix/pix.hill/grouppic.gif 1. shows everybody 2. shows everybody with names (neat-o keen) 3. A close up, but forget this one, it cuts off Meredith! Other Love-Hounds in this shot are Evan Welsh, Graham Dobkins, Ryan McGuire, Andy Semple, Ed Suranyi, Andy Marvick (IED), Ron Hill, and I can't remember who else right off the top of my head. Some people's names are misspelled, for instance, Meredith and Justin Bur. ---------------- Cathy, about Kate, if you wanted to give her another try I'd suggest her compilation album _The Whole Story_ because it contains tracks from her first 5 albums. Her 6th (The Sensual World) came out after The Whole Story. TWS a pretty good overview of her career up to 1985. It runs the gamut from the extremely beautiful to the extremely weird. Lots of different song types and lots of different vocal types. ************************************* * Barry, Kate is *NOT* a witch! * ************************************* Jeanne, you were watching the video to "Cloudbusting" yeah? It's a truly wonderful thing, yes indeed. Do you know the story behind the song? ---------- Jeffy, the little girl in Firestarter was named Charlie. (Charlene, I think) You said: > You really startled me when you mentioned your son. Something I never > would have guessed. Thanks for writing your wonderful article... Thank you. About my son...he's 17 years old (he'll be 18 Dec. 20) and his name is Adrian Gabriel Mapes. He was born just a couple of weeks before I saw/heard Genesis for the first time, so he's not named after Peter. He doesn't live with me, he goes to school in Lansing, Kansas and he's a straight A Honors student. Math is his specialty, and I'm hoping he'll decide to go to Northwestern, so he can move up to Chicago. He's got great taste in music (The Cure, Peter Gabriel, Siouxsie) but I haven't had any luck in getting him into Kate, Happy or Jane. Yet! :-) He loves sports, but is not really a sports jock. He particularly loves baseball and tennis. He's a great kid! I had kind of a shotgun wedding so to speak. I got pregnant at 16 and was 8 months pregnant when I got married. I got married in 1973 and divorced in 1978. The divorce was a friendly one, we just married too young, so his father and I are friends. Adrian's lived with his father since the divorce. He's gone to the same school system since 3rd grade, and he hasn't missed a day of school in 8 years! Adrian has a lot of my traits, but doesn't take after me when it comes to school though, thank goodness! He's been blessed with great teachers and loves school. Good for him! That's it for now...
