Alan Ezust asks about Mary Margaret O'Hara. She's from Toronto; her sister is Catherine O'Hara, who is apparently a well-known actress but I've never seen her. She has one album on Virgin Records (UK, also released in Canada) called Miss America. She reminds me of Jane Siberry in that her music is very personal, even quirky (not in a negative way); her style varies a lot from song to song. Some of her songs you could dance to, others are for sitting in a heap and crying on a sympathetic shoulder. Her voice is lovely, of course... Her song You Will be Loved Again was covered by Cowboy Junkies on their third album The Caution Horses. Both versions of the song are very beautiful, but they're entirely different! Miss America was released in 1988; her next album might be out next year. There might also be a soundtrack album for the film The Events Leading Up To My Death, for which she wrote the music. Bel Canto trivia. I have seen three versions of the Birds of Passage album, all of which have different track listings! These are the original version on Crammed Discs (Belgian record company, even if the group is Norwegian), a French version on CBS, and a Canadian version on Nettwerk. I think the French and Canadian editions have an extra track missing on the original. The order of songs is also different. Here's the sequence from the French edition; anyone have any others for comparison? look 3 / dewy fields / continuum / the suffering / the glassmaker picnic on the moon / intravenous / oyster / birds of passage a shoulder to the wheel / time without end Presents in December. I have always celebrated something called Christmas, called that not out of conviction but rather of convenience. In Latin class we had Saturnalia parties near the end of school in December (io Saturnalia!) during which, nevertheless, we sang Latin versions of Christmas carols (Adeste fideles, Rudolphus naso rubro, etc.)! But I like David's suggestion of calling it a Winter Solstice gift. It's a nice-sounding phrase. My proposed contribution: a track from Maximizing the Audience by Wim Mertens, probably The Fosse (which also appears on a Windham Hill recording, the only Wim Mertens on a North American label; he's Belgian, on Les Disques du Crepuscule). auto-description: 175 cm (5'9"); not very heavy (60 kg?); curly blond hair; blue eyes (tending to green or grey); ride black 12-speed bicycle all over Montreal except when it snows and slushes, when I take the metro; attached. Carrie: my mommy extracted me from an ongoing unpleasant Carrie-type experience by sending me to a high school which taught interesting things like Latin and which was not full of hostile creatures. i have managed to forget most of elementary school, to the extent that it seems like only a bad dream, and i wonder how 10-year-olds can be so horrid. blech. i think there might be more to say but i don't remember and i'm sleepy... justin ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 14 Nov 91 01:59:50 PST From: stevev@greylady.uoregon.edu (Steve VanDevender) Subject: Happy Holiday project and more, more, more I'm quite areligious myself but am not offended by the name "Happy Christmas Project". We'd never guessed. :) Now, that everyone has skipped this message because my silly remarks were unbearable, I can write about the sins of my youth, hoping that noone will read it. So, here here my first acoustic heroes: The very first record (a single), it must have been in '73, was "Hey Poppa Joe" from "Sweet", a british glamour pop band. About a year later I've also seen them in concert, and was very impressed. Although I still have their albums, they didn't last long in my favour. A couple of months ago they were playing in Wuppertal, but I didn't go to see them again. While digging out these albums to find the year, I've found the lyrics sheet of their "Desolation Boulevard", which contains some of my notes from that time. I did some corrections with a pencils and noted down which parts were repeated. Fascinating! Another fave of that time was "Status Quo". But their albums are dusty as well. Still, there was another band I found in '74, which is still one of my favourites, and that's "Manfred Mann's Earth Band" (currently also a variation named "Manfred Mann's Plain Music"). Beside KaTe, this is the only group where I have bought all their albums on CD after I already had all their vinyl pressings. I must have been to 5 or 6 of their concerts, and if I wouldn't fly to Boston in a month, I would see them in Duesseldorf on the same night. No doubt! My next favourite group came in '76 with "Camel" (no, not the cigarette). Again, I count them as one of my favourites, and their new album should arrive in a couple of days. Interesting, that most of my old favourites were from Britain. I haven't been interested in american music for a long time. The first american band I remember are "The Eagles". Their song "Hotel California" will always stay in my TOP 50. Even today most of the stuff I hear are british. Through the net I've learned about some good american artists. (Hey, I just got DCDs "Aion") Hmm, while I'm confessing my old lapse of taste, I could as well talk about a recent one. A favourite american band of mine is "Cock Robin". Let's see if at least one person will say something positive about them. You won't believe it but I have all their records, inclusive the 12" singles. Now I've written it, and unless I delete this paragraph until I post it tomorrow it's written for the world to read. But to take the cutting edge, I do like Happy's and KaTe's music _much_ better. I better stop before more secrets get uncovered. ___ Oh, they would walk the strip at nights Klaus Kluge and dream they saw their name in lights kkluge@Materna.DE on desolation boulevard they'll light the faded light ======================================================================== Date: Thu, 14 Nov 1991 19:22 +8:00 From: SVODOPIER@cc.curtin.edu.au Subject: Traditional "stuff" message... I definitely did not intend to exclude anybody from the project, and I apologize to you and anyone else who has the same feeling about it. I'm afraid I only thought about possible technical problems and not about cultural implications. Once you mentioned it, I also see that I might cause the same problem with the second date I named, New Year, cause I seem to remember that muslims celebrate the New Year at a different time. Actually, I don't even know if Happy & Kevin celebrate Christmas (does someone know?), and although I hope that they wont be offended, it is a good idea to rename the project. I got the idea of an Ectophile compilation tape for Happy shortly after her birthday, and didn't want to wait another year to do it. So, naturally (in my eyes) Christmas sprang into my mind, and didn't get out. Till today. So it was not intended as a Christmas present as such, just that I thought the time was apropriate. The main idea was as Jessica wrote it: > then I say we just give her a present just 'cause she's obviously very > special to us. I'm glad that you have mentioned Winter Solstice (although I don't exactly know the meaning of it), giving us a chance to include everyone. When are those WS/Yule gifts given? So, are we doing a Winter Solstice Project (WSP)? I need a new project name to rewrite the announcement, because I want to repost an updated version of it as a reminder. We could also move the date of our present from Christmas to the end of the year, which would also give us some more time to think about what to include on the tape. I know how difficult this decision is. Also, I would like to point out again that what I called HCP was not a fixed, set up project. I encourage everyone to include her/his thoughts about it, and I am quite certain that we will find a modus operandi which will suit everyone, because the basic idea should suit everyone (I hope). BTW, having just announced what my song for the HCP will be, I'm considering taking a different one which I've just stepped over. I've listened to Ofra Haza's "Shaday", after quite a while. On song 6 I was cought by surprise. Wasn't she singing 'Oh Happy, Oh Happy'? Well, she probably isn't, but it sounds _very much_ like it. The title of the song is "Galbi", and most of it is in a language I don't understand, but there is also a verse in english: "You stole my heart You stole my soul You take my breath away What can I do what can I say When you're so far away" And that with an occasional "Oh Happy". It's so cool! I'm really considering to take this instead. Probably I'll decide last minute what it finally will be. So my decision is open again. Luckily the 2nd song is shorter than the 1st, so if we have problems with the length of the tape, I would select the smaller one. Just as I wanted to post this, I received the latest digest, with some remarks about the project, so I'll write about them as well. Vishal wrote: > idea!! And yes, let's keep it secular. Agreed! It was not intended as a religous gesture. and: > My biggest concern is, what if Happy has already heard > the stuff, maybe owns it even (say, as may be the case > for Kate and Peter Gabriel's music). Also, what if two > people pick the same song ? I don't think it is a problem when Happy has already heard it. Wouldn't it be nice if your selection was one of her favourites? If two people pick the same song they should discuss who gets it. That's why I asked to post your selection as soon as you know about it. And it's also the reason why I wouldn't like everyone to select something from KaTe. Chances would be very high that we get doubles. Meredith: > Uh, I guess if any of you want a copy of this too I could arrange something... > e-mail me! :) You mean, Ectophiles who don't want to join the project? I'm sorry, but this name gives me the shudders and a foreboding of doom. Last year, my boss was part of the Winter Icing and Storms Project (WISP) experiment here in eastern Colorado. The experiment ran from mid-January into the first week of April. Plenty of time for winter storms, right? Wrong. A total of .15in of precipitation fell in those 2-3/4 months, some of it as rain! The experiment was nearly a total bust. (Only some decent icing data saved it). Dare we tempt fate with a similar name? :-) Actually, the mechanics of how we do it or what we call it don't matter to me in the slightest, just as long as we do it. It's a nice idea of a present from "a, a large group of ... this, uh, uh, 'network' of fans" to their adored artist. As the saying goes, it's the thought that counts. By the way, I'm having a terrible time picking my song. (I have just too many to choose from. Has anyone picked "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer!" yet? :-) ). Approximately when is the deadline for our choices? Only deadline pressure will make up my mind. I wouldn't worry about duplicating songs too much. Knowing this group, the result will more likely include songs over an incredible range of music than songs crowded in a small little room.
