Well, we have a lot of new people on the list. It is a large file, so I'm asking now for any objections. Brief background for newbies...when Ecto first started, we all threw out questions for Happy to answer as part of an Ecto/Homeground interview. Homeground is a Kate Bush fanzine from England and the people who put it together are Happy fans too and want to include the interview (parts of it anyway) in the next issue. So, the questions were sent to Happy, she answered them and sent them back to me. They've only been posted once, and I don't think the interview is available separately for ftp, like the FAQ is (ooh, we can ftp now! It's stone cool beans fun! Thanks Chip!) so should I repost it or not? btw, it's not ready to be sent to Homeground. My fault. Happy and Neil featured on the same radio show!! Tuesday was Neil Young's 46th birthday (Want to add his birthday of 12 Nov 1945 to the list? :-) ). To celebrate, the World Cafe played six or seven of his songs, performed by him and others. I loved it! What?! You didn't start reading this to hear about Neil? Sorry! Happy's segment came on an hour after Neil's 'birthday party'. I've included a transcript of the interview later in this post, so I'll just hit the highlights here. * She performed "Feed the Fire", "Words Weren't Made for Cowards", and "Given In" live from her home studio in Albany, recorded at WXPN in Philadelphia. Given the distance, the sound quality was fantastic. The interviewer implied that most of the technical setup was at Happy's end, though Happy didn't say what. The two _Warpaint_ songs were about the same as the album version, while "Given In" got the _Warpaint_ treatment. I'll describe the versions in the transcript, though I warn you that I haven't had the chance to directly compare them with the album, so I was working from a suspect memory. * The interview produced no banner headlines for readers of this list. She mentioned the upcoming tour, but its timing sounds ill-defined. She is still trying to round up people to round out her band, but says she's close. In the context of the upcoming tour, she made some interesting comments about the first four albums, fleshing out the sketchy comments I've heard in the past. * Unless I'm completely off my rocker, she actually mentioned us during the interview. She was asked whether she would perform songs from her first four albums live. Her reply, complete with all the pauses (I cleaned most of it out of the transcript) was: Absolutely. I got a, a large group of ... I've got this, uh, uh, 'network' of fans who are very, very familiar with the past four releases, and I think they'd be missing a lot, if I didn't include that into a live show. This was easily the worst she struggled for words during the interview and my favorite moment in it (outside of her music). We'll have to teach Happy how to say "warm fuzzy blue electronic mailing list". * The interview had a few other small fun moments, which I'll leave to you to discover. * Happy's speaking voice surprised me, being deeper, huskier, and flatter than I imagined. During most of the interview, she had a straightforward no-nonsense tone. * The interviewer did a decent job, though he continually stumbled for words. He hadn't heard Happy's first four albums, and made a minor blunder, which Happy specifically corrected. * It's really nice to find someone who basically uses 'really' and 'basically' as much as I do while speaking, but 'vocalizing' and 'actualize'? (Shiver!!) :-) Well, here's the transcript of the interview. I've cleaned up the minor pauses, false starts, hems, and haws, though I left in the bigger ones. The words of the interview were clear, though David Dye sometimes slipped into a mumble, and a few of his words are uncertain, but I made my best guess. I also resisted the severe temptation of editorial comments. ---- Interview on the World Cafe from WXPN in Philadelphia PA USA Tuesday, November 12, 1991 David Dye: David Dye on the World Cafe. We're going to do something kind of unusual now through the magic that _is_ radio. We're hooked up with Happy Rhodes who is in her home area studio near Albany, New York, and we've arranged to have a performance of some of the works from her latest album _Warpaint_. Hi, Happy. How are you? Happy: Hi. Just fine. DD: Now those of you who are not familiar with Happy Rhodes. We here in Philadelphia have been playing a lot of things from her latest album _Warpaint_, that have gotten just enormous response from listeners, and this is ... your record is on a tiny label which is sort of just yours and Kevin Bartlett's, who is your producer? HR: Correct. We're co-producers, and the label's actually Kevin's. I have nothing to do with it. DD: Uh-huh. HR: He started it quite a while ago to release his own music on, and he stumbled upon me and my music, and suggested that I try going the same route. DD: You've been recording for quite a while. _Warpaint_ is certainly not your first record. HR: Correct. I've got four releases prior to _Warpaint_. DD: Well, we're sort of talking about this music that perhaps some of the people listening to the World Cafe haven't had a chance to hear yet. I'd love it if you'd be able to do a version of some of the songs from _Warpaint_. "Feed the Fire" is one that really has captured the imagination of the people here in Philadelphia, and the ears of them. Is there a story behind that song? HR: Behind "Feed the Fire"? DD: Yeah. HR: Actually, I think it was just a desire to give back to all the artists in the world what they had given me throughout the years. I had grown up listening to artists like Queen, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, Yes, Sting, all these people, and they affected me very deeply, and inspired me greatly, and I wanted to, in some small way, give something back, and let everyone know that all artists are not on their own. They're all inspired by somebody who came before them, and to remember them, basically. DD: That's a great explanation of the song, because when you mentioned those other artists as there's something of their feel and sound in the song that really comes through. Well, how are you going to be performing today? HR: Today, we've got a trio. Myself on acoustic guitar and vocals. Kevin Bartlett will be on keyboards, and we have Ray Jung playing bass, and also on one song that you're going to hear today, we're going to have Mitch Elrod guest vocalizing. DD: Okay! Why don't we do "Feed the Fire" first? HR: Great! [Happy and crew perform "Feed the Fire". I don't have the musical background memorized, but while Kevin adds some flourishes and makes some changes, it has the same feel. Happy sings it in the same way, though (obviously) without her harmonizing with herself. Near the end, she plays around a bit, and maybe drops a word or two.] DD: Happy Rhodes live from her home studio here on the World Cafe with a version of "Feed the Fire" or "Back to the Trees" as people here in Philadelphia are referring to it. (Both chuckle). Great song. Now I understand that you're set up and prepared to do another tune from the current record. HR: Uh-huh. We're going to be doing "Words Weren't Made for Cowards". DD: Do you want to say a little something about this one? HR: Well, this song is really funny. A lot of people that I know personally have contacted me and said, "Is this song about me? I know it's about me!" (DD chuckles), and it really wasn't intended for any specific person in my life. But, I think we all have to deal with people who live their lives with a facade, who don't really say what they mean. Everybody's basically in a lot of situations afraid to say what they mean, so I find that we all mis- communicate on some grand level. It never really gets broken down to the basic fact, and it's something that annoys me a lot. It's something that I feel alienates me from a lot of people is the fact that they can't be honest in all situations, and I feel like I'm the type of person that really needs that. So that's basically what that song is about. DD: Great. Let's hear it. [Happy and Co play "Words Weren't Made for Cowards". Again the version follows the album version fairly faithfully with a changed background by Kevin and Happy's playing around a bit at the end including dropping the phrase "Be brave" (if I remember correctly). Mitch Elrod's only appearance of the interview is backing Happy during the first chorus.] DD: Happy Rhodes is our guest today on the World Cafe through the magic of radio, she's in her studio up near Albany, New York, where she's... I guess you've been rehearsing this band or getting people together to play out live. HR: Yeah. Actually the only rehearsal that's taken place has been with our bassist Ray Jung. Full rehearsal won't start obviously until we've completed the band and that just hasn't happened yet. We're close, but not there. DD: Now, I have never heard anything from your earlier records. They were much more acoustic sounding than your current release _Warpaint_? HR: Absolutely. Right now, I'm probably categorized mostly as 'alternative listening'.... DD: Right. HR: .... whereas the past four tapes would probably be categorized as 'folk', because of the orchestration. DD: Isn't that strange? Huh? ... HR: I've always found that to be strange. DD: ... how the orchestration sort of says what you do. That's interesting. Do you want to... Have you been working any of the older material into the new context now. HR: Absolutely. I got a large group of ... I've got this 'network' of fans who are very, very familiar with the past four releases, and I think they'd be missing a lot, if I didn't include that into a live show, so we're choosing, I'm picking about five or six songs from each old release, and working them up in new versions. DD: Have the songs changed a lot for you. HR: Well, certainly the meanings have changed for me, because I've grown a lot since then. I think that happens to everyone. Sonically, they will be changing quite a lot, because having a full band behind me is going to allow me to actualize them much closer to what I originally wanted. (Pause) See, that's the problem with the past four releases. The music is there, the content is there, and I'm proud of that, but in terms of the way it was executed, it never met up to my standards, because it was only me. I didn't have anyone helping me out at the time. So now that I've got a band behind me, it's much more to my liking, it's much more gratifying to me to perform that music. DD: When you were talking about doing the song called "Giving In", which is... How was that originally done? Just you and guitar. HR: Right. Just me and guitar with vocal overdubs. And it's actually "given" G-I-V-E-N. Okay? DD: Gotcha. HR: Okay! DD: Alright. Well, let's hear it. [Happy and band play "Given In". This version is notably slower paced than the original, and Kevin and Ray fill in a lot of background, much like her _Warpaint_ songs, though Happy's acoustic guitar is more prominent than on _Warpaint_. Again Happy makes minor changes to her phrasing.] DD: Happy Rhodes and band in a special performance here for the World Cafe. Happy, we definitely would not have been able to get the kind of sound that you've gotten today here in our (chuckles) threadbare studios at the World Cafe, but we really appreciate you hooking this up, and being able to do this live today. HR: It was a great pleasure, believe me. DD: Well, great. Look for Happy's records, which are on Aural Gratification Records. Great name, and _Warpaint_ is now available on CD. And the other tapes are still available now, too? HR: Sure they are. Yup! DD: Great. Look for them in your local alternative record store (smiling), I guess. Thanks again, Happy. HR: Thank you, too. ---- Any corrections welcomed! Obviously, I successfully recorded the interview and performance which lasted about twenty minutes. Unfortunately, the signal wasn't as clear or strong as last night, and broke up very slightly during the interview a couple of times, inserting a few pops and crackles. However, the sound was clear and strong. So, Jessica, if you (or anyone else) want to use it to make your copies, let me know. Of course, I will demand the original back! Gee, now I understand Ron Hill a bit better! ======================================================================== Subject: HCP announcement Date: Wed, 13 Nov 91 16:14:25 N From: Klaus Kluge Dear Ectophiles ! ????? TIME TO THINK ABOUT CHRISTMAS ????? Well, I don't know about your place, but shops over here already have their Christmas decoration on display, so I assume it is time to start talking about an idea which has been haunting me for some weeks now. I named this idea the "Happy Christmas Project", and the main goal is to create a Christmas present for Happy from us Ectophiles. Now the details: The idea is to assemble a tape with possibly a spoken Christmas/New Year message from everyone and ONE song she/he would like to dedicate to her. Practically that means everyone sends a tape with her/his message and the song to Vickie (she already volunteered to do it, THANK YOU !!!) who will create a tape with all the songs and messages and will send it to Albany for Christmas. Every participant will get her/his tape back with a copy of what Happy receives _if_postage_to_send_it_back_is_included_! There are no restrictions about what song to select, except not to take one from Happy (unless it is the announced australian dance mix :). It would be nice to have a variety of music, so I hope not everyone will select one from KaTe. The songs don't have to be xmas-orientated. Maybe you have a song where you think Happy should hear it. Vickie suggested to put KaTe's "December Will Be Magic Again" on the tape as the first song (from all of us), since Happy's probably never heard that song, and since it was KaTe who brought us all together. It would be great if we find someone to do an artwork for the cassettes cover? Volunteers? Ideas? If you have any more suggestions let us know! The project is still in an early stage, so chances are good we can incorporate them. Please don't send any tapes now ! """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" Just write if you would like to join in, and think about which song YOU would like to contribute. If you have a message to H&K but no possibility to put that on the tape (why doesn't my recorder have a microphone or even jack for it?) write it down, and we could ask Vickie to speak it on the tape for you. If you already know what song you would like to send, let us know the title and its length as well. That way we can make sure we don't have several copies of the same song, and we can find out what tapelength we need. I will post summaries of the entries. There will be one or two additional announcements before it actually starts. To give Vickie enough time to assemble the final tape, we should send our tapes in the first week of December. I want to point out that I don't want to put a financial burden on Vickie by having to send possibly one or two dozens of tapes back. I am sure you don't want that either. Vickie already has the major work on the project and I am very pleased that she volunteered to handle the tapes. So when you are sending a tape later in the project, please remember to include some $$$ for return postage. We can discuss the details when the project is in a more advanced stage. Well, now it's up to YOU. I hereby declare the HCP officially open! :) What will Klaus put on his tape ? Well, the decision wasn't easy. I had been thinking about it for weeks, and I first thought to put a german song on the tape, but monday evening I finally decided for something completely different. So I will take Manfred Mann's Plain Music, "Instrumedicine Song", 4:06 min. which is a quiet instrumental based on an Apache Medicine Song with Manfred Mann on keys and Barbara Thompson on sax. _____ Klaus Kluge --- kkluge@Materna.DE --- Countdown: 31 days ======================================================================== From: lubkin@apollo.com (David Lubkin) Date: Wed, 13 Nov 91 10:01:35 EST Subject: Re: ectoplasmic spewings! TIME TO THINK ABOUT CHRISTMAS ????? > I named this idea the "Happy Christmas Project", and the main goal is > to create a Christmas present for Happy from us Ectophiles. ... > I hereby declare the HCP officially open! :) Well, I'm not sure how to put this delicately. Here's my attempt: Not everyone on this list celebrates Christmas. I for one am Jewish, and do not typically give "Christmas" presents as such. I do give "holiday gifts", but they do not celebrate any particular religious event. I would not be surprised if there were not any Pagan/Wiccan folks on this list (especially with all this talk of a goddess). They also do not celebrate the birth of Jesus (even though most Christmas traditions were co-opted from the Pagans during the creation of this holiday). This holds for believers of the myriad of other religions on this planet. As a result, I feel excluded from this gesture. I am certain you did not intentionally attempt to exclude anyone, but that would be the result of any activity centered around Christmas per se. Is there a variation in this theme the members of this list would find acceptable? I'm a big fan of Winter Solstice gifts myself.
