We are very proud of ourselves (perhaps a little too much), and all the work we did on DepthGauge is now easily justified (besides...Kevin promised Dan and I backstage passes for life at all Happy Rhodes concerts....much better than any monetary shareware payment we possibly might have received :-) Here's the original press release that I came up with after a long morning of reading too many Apple press releases: -------------------------- MOVED OVER ECTO AT 4:34 PM, PDT, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1991. Contacts: Thomas A. Johnson tj@cs.ucla.edu Daniel A. Segel daniels@xstor.com DepthGauge 2.5.3 Unveiled Today. New Version of Popular Pixel-Depth Switching Utility goes EctoWare. Menlo Park, California; Los Angeles, California--October 22, 1991--The highly awaited upgrade to DepthGauge, the popular depth-switching utility for the Apple Macintosh was released today to an enthusiastic response. Bored with the rather stagnant shareware market, the authors decided to attempt to create a brand new software category: "EctoWare". Both authors are devoted fans of a singer-songwriter from Albany, New York named Happy Rhodes. The talented Ms. Rhodes has five albums available on the independent Aural Gratification label. Where ShareWare authors ask users of their software for a payment directly to them in cash (or some other commodity) the authors of DepthGauge are asking users to purchase a copy of one of Ms. Rhodes' albums for themselves. "Our goal is to increase the base of Happy Rhodes fans, worldwide", said Tom Johnson, one of the two talented programmers who created DepthGauge. "She has an incredible voice, and writes truly beautiful songs, but since she doesn't fall into any easily recognizable category of music, she hasn't yet attracted the attention of the major record labels". "DepthGauge is a quality product which has attracted many imitators," added Daniel Segel. "We feel we not only have the best product available, but that we offer the most for your money. Where else do you get a useful piece of software and a compact disc for only $15.99? Even if you don't use DepthGauge, you should purchase a Happy Rhodes album, and treat yourself to some beautiful music". DepthGauge Advantages In addition to this unique payment system, DepthGauge has many advantages over the many imitators it has spawned. Many of it's competitors suffer from memory loss: every time they are used they waste a small amount of the system memory. Use one of them enough times, and the Macintosh will crash. DepthGauge offers better compatibility with various third-party video hardware, and offers a visual pixel-depth indicator in the menu bar. System Requirements DepthGauge requires Color QuickDraw and System 6.0.5 or later. It is fully System 7.0 compatible. Balloon help, 32 bit addressing, and virtual memory are supported. Pricing and Ordering Information Interested parties may fulfill their payment obligation by writing directly to Aural Gratification at the following address: Happy Rhodes EctoWare Payment c/o Aural Gratification P.O. Box 8658 Academy Station Albany, NY 12208 The first four albums ("Rhodes Vol 1", "Rhodes Vol 2", "Rearmament", "Ecto") are only available on cassette. "Warpaint", her latest stunning release, is available on both cassette and compact disc. The CD is $13.99 and the tapes are $9.99 each. Postage for the CD is $2.00, postage for one tape is $1.50, and $0.35 for each additional tape. New York state residents must include the appropriate sales tax. Checks should be made out to "Aural Gratification". Neither Segel nor Johnson receive any financial considerations from the sale of Happy Rhodes cassettes and compact discs, they claim to be purely interested in the creation of Happy Rhodes fans everywhere. You see I have this black denim jacket that is totally unadorned, and is just begging to be decorated by some well deserved symbol. Originally, I was going to get a friend to put a KT symbol on the back, but if there was an "official" :-) Happy symbol, I'd prefer to have that, instead. Then, people might come up to me, overpowered with curiosity as to what it was, and then I'd just have to explain to them, wouldn't I?... :-) Keep well, Stephen ======================================================================== From: kyrlidis@athena.mit.edu Subject: Re: Logos Date: Tue, 12 Nov 91 14:27:45 EST How about, _______________ / / =============== | |_ //| | \ \ || | | | \ \ || | | | \_\ || | | | / / || | | | / / || /-------|\| / / +----------+-\< < || | | | \ \ || | | | \ \ || | | | \ \ ||/ |/ \ \ __ \ \/ / \ / \/ Oh my god, I should be working.....Bye... (yes, i chose the college i went to on the basis of the weather!). jeff sez: >I don't think I really have many bands whom I might be embarrased to admit >that I still like. i'm a sucker for a cute face with a nice voice: my closet is full of nu schooz albums... :) Meredith Tarr sez: >She lay on her bed with her eyes closed, >and pretty soon she started "seeing" the beat: reds and blues flashed behind >her eyelids at every beat. It's all connected up there somehow- it makes >sense that your ears would have an affect on your eyes, if you could only >get yourself to notice it. reminds me of two things... 1) we had a light organ back in college - i forgot how we built it, but you plugged it into a amplifier like any other speaker and the electricity that carried the signal pulses activitated a bank of colored lights in the organ. you could adjust it with a set of potentiometers that modified which sound frequencies affected which lights and too what intensity. pretty freaky at parties. 2) the dream machine. this is a bit more arcane. the idea here is to induce A dreamstate (similar to the one that i-forgot-who described after listening to happy and forgetting if he was awake or asleep) that resembles lucid dreaming. the method is to stimulate the retina by applying a continuous rhythmic light pulse either through closed eyelids or just staring. the two models that i have seen depend on your means. one is a walkman-like device that has a set of goggles instead of headphones. the goggles are black and on the inside is a pair of leds that stimulate the eyes. the other, less expensive, model is a essentially a toliet paper tube with vertical cuts made in the tube. this is placed on a turntable and rotated around a light bulb which creates the same effect as blinking leds. i'm sure that the enterprising electrical engineer could make a simplified version of the first model cheaply. i've never used one of these machines, but i've been told the effects are spectacular. >And finally: I must admit I'm a child of the early-80's. Ah, where have >A Flock of Seagulls, Culture Club, Duran Duran, and Howard Jones gone??? new romatics all of them! afos dissolved (i have a theory that they metamophisized into mister mister but that is a hard theory to proove). duran duran never really appealled to me at all - until their last album which was wonderfully bizarre. and howard jones is still around, though his music has gone somewhat downhill. another fave from the period: nik kershaw. >Enough of this- bis spaeter (ask Klaus what _that_ means ;)! sounds deviant... ;) stevev@greylady.uoregon.edu (Steve VanDevender) sez: >Ah, the early 80s. I have never had wide musical tastes; my >first musical interest was The Fixx, whom I still like, mmmmm..."stand or fall" is still a magnificent song after all these years. and "red skies" sends chills up the spine. damn - now i'm going to have to go and listen to their first four albums tonight. after that, i felt that they fell apart: _calm animals_ (or what- ever it was called) was blah. and _reaction_ was pointless. have not followed them since those two releases... >I am about the only >person I know who admits to liking New Rush and doesn't like the >pre-_Moving Pictures_ stuff as much. ooh ooh mista cotta! count me in here too...well, not quite now that i think about it. i like _hemispheres_ and _moving pictures_ quite a bit. _moving pictures_ is nice, but boring after a while. _grace under pressure_ had lots of promise but doesn't live up to it. _power win- dows_ is magnificent. _hold your fire_ was a pleasant surprise (i especially like "time stands still"). the last two are rather boring though in my opinion - the music is repetative and the lyrics are beginning to get tiring.
