The artist is Happy Rhodes, who has released five albums: _Volume I_, _Volume II_, _Rearmament_, _Ecto_, and _Warpaint_. In all five, Happy frequently uses sf as a motif for her personal and emotional songs, though no songs use sf as an actual subject. They are most explicit in _Warpaint_ which uses time travel, reincarnation, physical body transformation. On all albums her songs are populated with moon-men, monsters, angels, and other creatures of her imagination. Most of her songs have surreal atmosphere, with blurred boundaries between reality and dreams, life and death, human and alien. In general, she lets her imagination run wild. To top it all off, the covers of her first four albums have monsters and spirits, painted or photographed by Happy. Happy releases her albums through a small private label, Aural Gratification, though we fans are trying hard to spread the word. Her music has become very popular on isolated alternative radio stations. Anyone wishing more information about this talented artist and future superstar can contact the Happy Rhodes mailing list: Subscribe: ecto-request@athos.rutgers.edu Post: ecto@athos.rutgers.edu Rich, if you have any questions, feel free to ask me. First, I would like to note the 'baby duck syndrome' in popular music. Like a baby duck who worships the first object it encounters as its mother, we worship the first songs we really hear in pop music (well, at least those who catch the music bug, which includes everyone reading this). We devour everything we can hear on the radio (and if rich enough (which I wasn't, stuck with a tiny $10 transistor AM radio), on records). That usually comes in our rebellious impressionable early teen-age years. The love for those songs is amazingly long-lasting, beyond any reasonable merit in the music itself. I'm too lazy to dig through my archives and cross-reference the Madonna fans with the birthday list, but I have a sneaking suspicion that many of them were about the right age to get snagged by Madonna in that period. Note that this claims nothing about the quality of Madonna's music, per se. Both good and bad music can be caught this way. To my mind, the more important question is whether a person gets beyond this stage of music appreciation. Some never do, ignoring any music made since then, worshipping the nostalgia. Fortunately, I did, but my own age of golden haze (say, 1968-70) still snagged quite a bit of dross which I still thoroughly love. Probably my most embarrassing love is for bubblegum, that bouncy energetic lightweight-to-the- point-of-floating-away music done by the Ohio Express, the 1910 Fruitgum Company, and the Archies. (What? You've never heard of these classic groups!?). Songs that have justly disappeared into the dustbin of history (and many that unjustly did so) still bring joy. Rhino Records released a series called _Have a Nice Day: Super Hits from the '70s_, which I have the first six (of the fifteen) volumes. The first two especially cover my own golden hazy period. I can sing along with every single song, even 22 years (Isn't that number scary?) later! Point Two focusses more on Vickie's comments about pop culture. I think the point actually is a much larger and deeper one, touching on a fundamental aspect of peoples' personalities. How do people react to society as a whole? Do they follow the crowd (conformists)? Do they follow their own drummer (non-conformists)? Do they do the exact opposite of the crowd (anti- conformists)? I've always seen a lot of the latter in alternative music fans, and have always felt 'anti-conformist' describes them better than 'elitist'. Most of the comments about this subject have generally fallen into the 'non-conformist' camp, i.e., people willing to enjoy music or books, ignoring their popularity. Yet as a committed non-conformist, I know the frustration of discovering something that you love and having it discovered and stampeded practically to death by the crowd. However, I disagree with Vickie in one respect. If something enters pop culture, I don't think it stays there. I've found that if you just wait long enough, the crowd will pass through and your beloved discovery reverts to the true believers once more. I've seen this cycle happen many times in things that I love, inside and outside of music. In fact, the number one example I have in mind while writing this is backpacking, which was 'discovered' in the early eighties, and now has returned to 'normal'. Steve noted: I'm a little uneasy about your gaffa .sig, Vickie, because it's the sort of thing that might backfire. It just might tempt a flamer to join ecto in order to "save it from toadies" or whatever. Over the weekend, I had an idea to keep the flamers out of Ecto: the Fuzzy Blue Mailing List. Why not drop a short note saying that we had a nice thread about Madonna going? I figured they would think we had a fatal case of the cooties and would ignore us forever. I was half-serious about it, but suffered from the same mis-givings as Steve. What if someone did invade the sanctity of Ecto with flame throwers a-blazing? Just ignore them. Most flamers just want the attention, and will eventually go away if they don't get it. As for Cynthia herself, I have no intention of rising to her bait. (Hell, I'm proud to be a 'toady' for Happy's music!). However, if someone wants to respond to her I do have a suggestions. How about posting something like: Dearest Cynthia, I have a minor suggestion for you. Why don't you try posting something about KaTe, her music, who she looks like, what gaffa really means, etc? Try it you might like it, maybe even better than flaming! Feel free to use this idea if you wish. I won't, but I hate to see good ideas go to waste! Re the World Cafe Happy interview: How did a Laramie WY station get on that list?!?!!? Laramie is about sixty miles away, and I'll have to see if I can pick up KUWR through all the mountains. I hope so! Doug Burks _O_ dbx@olympic.atmos.colostate.edu |< She really is!! Nope, I began liking Madonna after 'Like a Prayer' so I think I was well in my early 20s when that happened. I had her stuff of the True Blue period, but I decided I hated it after a while, and gave it to my sister who asked for it (although she didn't wait to hear my answer...). I still don't like her early stuff that much. As for my first musical likes (gulp...) here goes: a) Abba (I still like some songs...) b) Queen (I still like them) c) Peter Gabriel (ditto) d) Iron Maiden (I personally can't stand them, I gave away all my heavy metal records in 1985). e) Donna Summer (My sister took those records too...) f) Lene Lovich (I saw her live at the age of 14 and haven't recovered yet!) g) Kate Bush (got my first album (NfE) in 1980, bought it on CD last week!) h) Mike Odlfield (saw him live in 1981- bought QE2 -still love his music) So I guess Doug's argument is partly right in my case. I outgrew some of my early faves, but most of them are with me still. My friend Efi was a HUGE Abba/Billy Joel fan, but she turned into a Classical music freak, with an ear for melodic rock music (She liked Happy from song #1), so she's a prime example of Doug's rule. Jeff Burka, why didn't you say anything (thanks for mentioning Happy though) The thread has sort of wound down now and I imagine that Subject Line is in a lot of people's KILL file, so they don't have to read the 10th posting of "...uh, there's Major Tom by Bowie" "No, it's NOT Major Tom!!" so if anyone (Doug?) wants to contribute, better think up a new Subject Line. I added my 2 cents worth by mentoning Happy within a Michael Weaver post. I found out about this thread because one of the articles was cross-posted in rec.music.misc. Oh, someone posted that long list of SF in Music that Doug talked about. It was put together by the same guy who runs the Mystery Science Theater 3000 mailing list. Cool! Since this is a holiday (I have to say that I can't even remember *which* holiday it is...Veteran's Day?)
