[Sub-Headline, G4] Sam Phillips and her spare songs of vulnerability. [Picture G1: Phillips in black jacket, collar up, hands behind her back, looking wistful. Caption:] Phillips began as a religious singer. Her latest album is "Martinis & Bikinis." [Picture G5: Phillips sitting on the floor, white t-shirt, hands in pockets of black pants, leaning forward. Caption:] Phillips was known as Leslie Phillips on her religious albums, but began using Sam when she switched to secular music. By Tom Moon, Inquirer Staff Writer. New York -- No matter what it says on the outside of her new CD, Sam Phillips still prefers her original title: -I Need Love.- It's more commonplace than -Martinis & Bikinis-, the official name of Phillips' third secular album. And, frankly, it's a little embarrassing. So blunt. So frank an acknowledgment of dependency. And that's exactly why Phillips likes it. "That song ("I Need Love") is really the most honest thing on the record," said Phillips recently, sitting in a Virgin Records conference room, peering 14 stories down at Central Park. "It's not really fashionable right now to say something like 'I need love' or 'I need God.' It's not considered good to show vulnerability. Well, I'm learning that it's important to allow yourself to be vulnerable, in life and in music. And I think it's healthy to just say that." She gestures behind her, where her label's marketing and promotion and publicity staffs are at work trying to drum up interest in what some believe is her make-or-break project. "I guess they thought -Martinis & Bikinis- would walk a little farther. It's like those women authors who had to write under a pen name to be heard. -Martinis & Bikinis- is a pen name: The title is -I Need Love.-" Composing the song "I Need Love" was part of a stripping-away process Phillips, now 32, undertook after a year-long tour for 1991's -Cruel Inventions-. That album was filled with psychedelic mood-setting and intentionally obscure imagery; she wanted her next project to hit hard, to contain fewer shaded areas and less coy wordplay. She would still discuss weighty themes, but in the most direct, least apologetic terms. "These songs are more in black and whit," Phillips explains. "That comes from the writing and also the way T-Bone (Burnett, Philips' husband and longtime producer) went about recording. ON the last one, there was a lot more stuff going on. This time everything is spare. "My writing really changed after six months on the road with a guitar. Even though the sounds were wild on (-Cruel Inventions-), the songs turned out better live, like we'd lost something in (the studio). Everything became more personal." But Phillips, who stopped in the middle of recording -Martinis- to write a batch of country songs, recognizes there's a fine line between stripping an idea to its essentials and dumbing it down to fit a pop framework. She believes she's still on the credible side of that line. "Any time you try to make music for the radio, that's dangerous," she says. "But your want people to hear what you're doing. The trick is to keep the marketing and sale and all that stuff out of your brain when you're creating." Some may find -Martinis- a little too simple. One song, "Same Rain," is just a meditation on how one person's experience can be different from another's. Another, "Signposts," addresses the search for big truths. "Strawberry Road," and overt Beatles tribute on an album heavily influences by mid-period Lennon and McCartney, is concerned with thawing out long-frozen feelings. Some cuts, however, are multidimensional. Though its title suggests and exchange between an argumentative couple, "Baby I Can't Please You" is actually "a swipe at fundamentalism of all sorts. It's talking about how religious guidelines reduce spirituality to a set of rules," explains Phillips. "Of course the song works on the man-woman level, too, so there's a little smile in there." Missing from these songs and others is the telling imagery and tightly drawn sketches that are characteristic of current songcraft. Phillips doesn't consider herself a singer-songwriter ("There sure are a lot of these drippy female singers right now") and says she always aims high when she writes. "I'm farsighted physically, and I think that has somethings to do with the way I write. I never paid that much attention to details. I'm not a very good story-teller. My idea has always been if you tackle a bigger subject, there's more room to move around in it." Phillips, who says her psyche has been "under construction" for five years, has applied this wide-canvas approach to both pop music -- with -Martinis-, -Cruel Inventions- and 1989's -The Indescribable Wow-, what she calls an "unplanned trilogy" -- and before that to contemporary Christian music. As Leslie Phillips, she had quite a successful run in the '80's: four acclaimed and successful albums on the powerhouse Myrrh label. The last, 1987's -The Turning-, found Phillips disillusioned with the role of zealous religious singer. The songs were darker than her previous works and challenged church doctrines. Burnett, her producer on -The Turning-, aided Phillips in landing a pop contract and has helped mold her songs with tart musical accompaniment. Phillips was already a critic's darling when she arrived on the pop scene: Writers who don't normally pay attention to Christian pop praised -The Turning- for its adventurousness. When Phillips switched to the secular side, she changed her name to Sam -- unaware that the name who discovered Elvis Presley was known as Sam Phillips. Now, she laughs, she calls him "the real Sam Phillips." Though her pop works have been praised to the heavens, Phillips remains a cult figure. She got a boost last year, however, when two songs from -Cruel Inventions- were used in Victor Nunez's film -Ruby in Paradise.- "He heard 'Raised on Promises' (which opens the film) and flipped, apparently. The song's narrative was exactly what his character had gone through. I liked it because (-Ruby-) was so different from the usual Hollywood thing -- the radical message that the hero of this film was just being a regular, loving human being, not a star." The extra exposure put pressure on Phillips to equal -Cruel Inventions- with her next project. She and Burnett worked to exhaustion for more than four months on -Cruel-, but because of his busy production schedule, -Martinis- had to be made in far less time. "That was good, because it wasn't appropriate to make a cluttered record," Phillips says. "Music has changed so much in the last three years. People are starting to listen to music again as a (recreational) activity -- not music that you do aerobics to, but music you listen to." And that, she says, is a major development: "You're seeing these very serious people approaching their work as entertainment, not as a political grandstand or a social crusade. "I strongly believe it's just too easy to weigh down a song with politics or religion, and by that I mean organized religion. My brush with gospel taught me that about propaganda: We don't need art to teach all the time. Art should be inspiring." ---- 30 ---- ======================================================================== From: trmarchand@ucdavis.edu Date: Mon, 16 May 1994 12:40:05 -0700 Subject: The Story in Davis, CA I saw the Story perform on Saturday night here in Davis, CA, and they were fantastic (and that's an understatement)! This was the first time I'd seen them live. I just read a post by someone (I forget his or her name) who was saying that they're much better as a duo than they are with a band, and based on what I saw, this sounds right to me. Okay, so I haven't seen them with backing musicians, but comparing the live performances of songs from _The Angel in the House_ with the studio versions gives me this impression. I was blown away by almost every aspect of the show--their music, singing, sense of humor, stage presence, everything. Johnatha played the guitar, and Jennifer played various percussive-type instruments, and both sang (of course). Their voices live sounded as good as--or even better than--they do on CD. The harmonies were incredible, blending and separating, swooping and falling. (Pardon me if my language is overblown--putting this experience into words is difficult.) I was surprised by their stage presence. For some reason, I thought they'd be shy or uptight, but they weren't at all. They talked a lot between the music, explaining what the songs were about and telling stories. Topics of conversation included Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan, riot grrrl figure skaters, marriage proposals they'd received at shows (from both men and women), Johnatha's dogs, the beauty myth and weight, and other subjects I can't think of right now. I laughed, I almost cried, I thought, I felt. (There goes my pretentious writing again.) If you can't tell by now, I'll make myself clear and say that I thought was an amazing show. But then, Rutgers already gets Ecto-the mailing list gatewayed as a newsgroup, so maybe the sysadmin thought that alt.music.ecto would cause confusion. I don't know. I'll admit that I'm way too sensitive and biased to be objective about the group, because I was upset for days after reading one of the first posts, which was a flame against Ecto-the mailing list, calling us "mean" and "close-minded." I suppose it hurt me most because I had had a few very nice e-mail conversations with this fellow when he was an Ectophile, and I had no idea he was upset with the mailing list. Worse still is to condemn the entire list for whatever happened between him and whoever else it was he had problems with. That really, really, really bugs me. It's not isolated either. Jorn has constantly condemned Ecto because a handful of people disagreed with him about something. Recently, we saw someone condemning the list because of *e-mail* concerning some really stupid word. Come on! There are over 300 people on Ecto. To bitch about an entire list because of what one, two or even a handful of people do, is just so silly. Yeah, it upsets me. If someone is mad at me, take it up with me. If someone is mad at someone else, take it up with them. It's not *fair* to drag Ecto into disputes, when Ecto has nothing to do with it. It's *especially* not fair when someone has chosen to send disagreements/flames via e-mail rather than the list. Apparently, that's what happened to the alt.music.ecto guy, because I sure don't remember any problems he had based on what was posted to the list. Anyway, the post upset me, but I couldn't answer him either directly or in alt.music.ecto, so I still don't know why in the world he said what he did. I do think it's nice that no one took the bait and flamed him back. eikciv ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 16 May 1994 16:31:05 CDT From: Subject: A loose end from last week Last week, snpf wondered if Happy got the HGP tape. Tim *will* blindly rmgroup everything that hasn't been discussed on alt.config, and most newsadmins will back him up on that count at least. I think that's reasonable -- it's why alt.config exists. It's only his occasional refusal to listen to reasonable arguments that *have* been presented on alt.config that sometimes gets to me, especially considering the *.music.* splits you mention. >Personal to news administrators: are you usually listening to Tim Pierce? Enough of them are that newsgroups that he won't at least grudgingly tolerate don't have a chance at much propogation. Anyway, here's the miniFAQ on Tim. I think it's a bit harsh, but it makes some amusing reading and helps you know what you're up against. :) The mailing-list-vs.-newsgroup discussion is particularly apropos. Ethan --- *snip* --- FAQ: Tim Pierce 1) Who is Tim Pierce? He's the news administrator at Amherst College, up in Massa- chusetts. He's been on the net long enough to consider himself a sage authority on all manner of subjects. 2) Is he a sage authority on all manner of subjects? No. 3) What's his favorite hobby? His favorite hobby is lurking in alt.config and springing on people who have ideas for new newsgroups and telling them why their ideas are totally idiotic and worthy of being buried in sixteen feat of cow manure. He never says any- thing to the real losers who obviously don't know what they're talking about, preferring to save his opinions for those who sort of do and thus may be seen as in some vague way challenging Tim's position as God of alt.config. 4) Is there *anything* that he's right about? If he tells you that it would be a fine idea if no level of your proposed newsgroup name had more than 14 characters (e.g. "alt.transcendentalism" is too long for most news software to deal with, but "alt.snuggling" isn't because no level has more than 14 characters), he's right. On just about all other conceivable issues, he's wrong. 5) I just proposed a new newsgroup in alt.config. Tim told me I should start it first as a mailing list. But I just saw someone who said they had a mailing list that they wanted to turn into a newsgroup because it was getting too big, and Tim said that was bad. What's going on here? This is the Famous Tim Pierce Contradiction Number 1 (see below for Number 2). A mailing list should never be turned into a newsgroup, no matter how big it gets. All proposed alt. groups should start out as mailing lists and only be turned into newsgroups later if they do really well. In other words, ignore him. 6) I just proposed a new newsgroup in one of the Big 7 hierar- chies (comp, misc, soc, talk, news, sci, or rec) and Tim said it should start out as an alt. group instead and then become a Big 7 group if it does really well. But I just saw someone who pro- posed moving an alt. group to a Big 7 group and Tim said that was horribly, unbelievably bad. What's going on here? This is the Famous Tim Pierce Contradiction Number 2 (see above for Number 1). A new newsgroup should start out as an alt. group in order to judge how well it will do and maybe later on move it to a Big 7 group. However, no alt. group should EVER be moved to a Big 7 group because that would be bad. In other words, ignore him. 7) Is Tim mean-spirited and vicious? Yes, but that's normal for USENET and the alt. net. 8) Are ASCII art pictures (e.g. those drawings of Ren and Stimpy you see in people's .sigs) the same thing as binary source files of pornographic GIFs? According to Tim Pierce, they are. Totally and completely. 9) Tim Pierce sounds like a real crank. Yep. ======================================================================== Date: Mon, 16 May 94 14:48:18 PDT From: kyrlidis@templeton.cchem.berkeley.edu (Angelos Kyrlidis) Subject: Linda Brady Me again, (I *love* bounce ecto) I haven't seen D&E post about it, so let me be the one to break the news. I just found out for certain that I'll be spending my summer in Albuquerque. So I have to ask...are there any ectophiles there, or will I be spending 3 months in the desert? :) If you are in Albuquerque (try spelling that 3 times quickly!), send me e-mail rather than posting to ecto. For one thing, it's nicer, and for another, I'll be in Springfield for the rest of the week, so I may lose your message in the wave of ecto mail awaiting my return. I've already found out that the concert scene is nonexistent in Albuquerque, so this will be a pretty dry summer musically. However, I will have Net access one way or another, so I'll have to rely on this group for my music. ==> valerie ============================================================================ iago@merle.acns.nwu.edu "Patience, Iago. If anybody hears more, like for example in-store appearances, PLEASE post. Who knows? She might play some Happy! The wedding is set for 8/13/94. So far the plans are going pretty good. Got most of the major stuff done. Now for how I did it!: 10/2 was my brother's wedding. We're twins, so I wanted to do something special. I was also the best man. Since I wanted to ask Karen to marry me anyway, I figured that that day would be it. So I called up Bill & Jen and asked them if it was OK. This was about a month ahead of time. That whole time people would ask me if I had my 'best man speech' ready. I told everyone that I was gonna wing it. Needless to say, the time came for the speech and that's when I asked her! Awaiting your submissions as editor, I remain ... Seems the local music store (Carl Fischer, in the East Village) was selling Happy's sheet music. There were lovely covers for a book called "I and II, the beginning," "Warpaint" and "RhodeSongs." Please don't ask me why there was no Ectopoise, this is just what was available in the store. A friend of mine had called to inform me of the music available, so I rushed over and bought every one of them. I couldn't wait to play them, so I sat on a ledge just under the ceiling, took out my flute, and toodle-ee-doo'd away. "Wretches Gone Awry" was a particular joy to play. Happy herself came over and told me that she was glad I was enjoying myself. I told her I was glad she released this wonderful music. Then I had to wake up. I didn't get to play every song in the books. :-( But at least I did get to see Happy up close and personal. :-) Well, that's it. Just wanted to share that with someone who'd understand why I woke up smiling. -Sam ======================================================================== From: Tim Cook Date: Tue, 17 May 94 14:57:26 BST Subject: Milla Well I couldn't wait for the Milla album to be released here (I think its out in a couple of weeks) so I persuaded Chip to send me a copy which arrived about 20mins ago. Very nice - so thanks to all who enthused about this. Special thanks to Chip for doing the buying, packaging and posting :-) I found a Milla promo of "Gentleman Who Fell" on Sat. in Reckless Records so having played the single song promo over and over and over again I was looking forward to hearing the whole album. I noticed the album was recorded in London (according to the sleeve notes). I wonder if the US and UK versions of the album are going to be different. I know that its going to be released over here under her full name - Milla Jovovich. We get the full name in the same way Stina Nordenstam loses hers when she travels across the pond!! Will that be the only change? That's it - back to work :-( ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 17 May 94 07:18:11 PDT From: tjshadb@ecto.ca.sandia.gov (Troy J.
