He's just started getting involved with the net, so I might have a new recruit - it turns out he works at Northwestern in the same building with me 2 floors down. This really isn't a "response" to this post...I just had to tell you how much I enjoyed it, and wanted to thank you for writing to Ecto about the experience. I've been hooked on Kate since 1981, and through the years there have been times where I might go for months without listening to her. Then I'll get to missing her, pick any album at random and put it on, and I always once again realize why she's my #1 goddess. In the real, and in the net world, Happy is my idol, and hero. But I wouldn't even be here typing now if not for Kate (not to mention that Ecto wouldn't exist, and no one would be reading this anyway) so I owe her a lot. Beyond that though, if the music didn't still capture my ears, head and heart, loving Kate wouldn't be the same. It does, I'm pretty sure it always will, so I'm not worried about "losing" her. Hi! How's alt.music.ecto going? I haven't received a single a) message b) answer to my message asking for replies So it isn't carried very well. Reasons: - After Alan Ezust made Ken P. Chase send the newgroup message about 2 rmgroup messages followed almost immediately, with more to follow. - The rmgroup messages were posted due to two facts: - alt.music.ecto wasn't discussed on alt.config - the newgroup message comments weren't helpful either (opposite is true) After that I decided to wait a week or so and if nothing happens (i.e. arrives at my site) I'd send a second newgroup message with some questions about whether people generally listen to Tim Pierce (who did the first rmgroup) and with some better comments about why alt.music.ecto is a good newsgroup to have. I got about half a dozen replies from news administrators worldwide as well as another bunch of rmgroup messages from other news administrators (either to mine or to Ken's newgroup message, impossible to tell). The comments in the replies basically told me to - read alt.config - read the alt.config FAQ - use alt.config to discuss alt groups first - not expect that alt.music.ecto be carried by many sites (one saying 'we probably won't carry it') - expect that people do listen to Tim Pierce who does a neat job in rmgroup'ing alt.* newsgroups that haven't been discussed on alt.config - try to get a rec.music.ecto group (with that strong a mailing list that shouldn't be a problem - well, probably someone who didn't follow the recent discussions about rec.music.rem) All of these (except the last one) were right and if we expect alt.music.ecto to be successful we'd better discuss it on alt.config and recreate it afterwards. I'll append the contents of my newgroup message which might be a start for the discussion on alt.config (which right now my private site doesn't get, but if we decide to go that way I can change that). Some comments in []s --------8<------- This is to improve propagation of alt.music.ecto Personal to Tim Pierce: why do you blindly try to rmgroup everything, even in alt.*? It's ok to remove silly groups like all those with three times the same word at the end, but all newsgroups you don't even know about? [Tim Pierce is not only rmgrouping undiscussed alt.* stuff but also actively taking part in news.groups' discussions against any split of *.music.* - for this reason my language might be a bit too offending here, remembering the flames that I had with Tim and others there.] Personal to news administrators: are you usually listening to Tim Pierce? Rationale for alt.music.ecto: Happy Rhodes is a singer/songwriter who has a big fellowship on the mailing list Ecto. Some people are reluctantly unsubscribing from Ecto due to the extremly high volume - more than 10000 messages in the last 18 months. It's not the contents, because that's extraordinary flame-free, it's just the volume. The foundation of alt.music.ecto has been discussed on Ecto as being a way out of that dilemma, since newsreaders often are more powerful for high volume information. Why alt.music.ecto and not alt.music.happy-rhodes? The mailing list Ecto is based around Happy Rhodes, but includes many other artist's music as well as many other things - Ecto is a music based culture, not only Happy Rhode's 4th album. For your newsgroup files: alt.music.ecto discussions of Happy Rhodes and other music ---------8<---------- to complete this here's the original newgroup message's body: ---------8<---------- I said I wouldn't create any newsgroups for anyone else, but I guess I lied. Date: Mon, 16 May 1994 10:12:10 +0300 (EET DST) I know I'm digging my own grave here, mais c'est plus fort que moi. :-) The notorious "Video Search Of Miami" mail order firm had this following introduction of Mylene Farmer in their spring 1994 update leaflet. As someone has said it, guess there is no such thing as bad publicity, although I think this is a bit sad... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ VSOM Spotlight: MYLENE FARMER Who the hell is Mylene Farmer ? Simply, Mylene is one of the world's most popular contemporary singers. She began her extraordinary career in France in 1984 with the release of "Maman A Tort" [Mother Is Wrong], followed two years later by the gothic/pop single "Plus Grandir" [Stop Maturing]. Later that same year, she established herself with "Libertine", her first gold record, selling enormous numbers in Italy, Spain, Germany, Japan, England and of course France. From 1986 thru 1994, she amassed a string of 12 consecutive Top Ten singles, culled from five platinum albums, far surpassing Madonna's popularity in the world market. Today, Mylene's new releases are greeted with rabid enthusiasm from her legions of fans. And her concerts are considered the hottest even of the season. BUT THE MOST AMAZING ASPECT OF MYLENE FARMER'S METEORIC STARDOM IS, AS OF THIS MOMENT, SHE REMAINS CONSPICUOUSLY UNKNOWN IN THE UNITED STATES. MYLENE FARMER: 10 MUSIC CLIPS (French Lng w/Eng subs) (90 min) Contemporary rock operas unparalleled to anything in the American music market. Clips are letterboxed films. Made for adults. Breathtaking special effects, extraordinary camerawork and _acting_. Plus violence. And nudity! MYLENE FARMER IN CONCERT (French Lng w/Eng subs) (98 min) Perhaps the most amazing concert ever filmed! An incredible six-camera extravaganza directed by Laurent Boutonnat; letterboxed; stereo sound -------------------------------------------------------------------------- A few notes: * Mylene's latest single release "Que Mon Coeur Lache" is from the year 1992 (English version of the same song "My Soul Is Slashed" released 1993), so there should read "From 1986 thru 1993, she..." * Mentioning the name "Madonna" is most unfortunate. I should note that these two artists have entirely different images and personalities. * As Mylene is currently tied up to her acting career, there won't be new (music) releases from her until 1995. * She has only made one tour (in 1989) and is unlikely to make another (ever, I would like to add, maybe for the reasons similar to those that keep Kate Bush from touring. Sorry to drag her name into this.). * The original Mylene Farmer clips do not have English subtitles in any of them (two clips have English dialogue), so unless VSOM has made some translation work of their own, I doubt that this information is correct. The same goes for the "En Concert" video. * The phrase "Breathtaking special effects" gives misleading information, there are NOT any computer graphics or similar illusions in Mylene's clips. * The words "violence" and "nudity" are rude way of marketing these works of art. They must think that these kind of words sell to Americans. * Since Mylene has not released any compilation containing 10 videos (as far as I know), VSOM is probably selling illegal copies of her clips. This is understandable (although not acceptable) since original Mylene Farmer videos are extremely hard to find in NTSC format. If ever you hear that the lead is with another band, please post it. To Meth and Vickie especially, I'm sorry to say I missed seeing The Story in concert last Thursday night for I was in Southern California attending a funeral. But, my friends who went said that it was Jonatha Brooke and Jennifer Kimball without the band. And that they were wonderful. And that their voices were even more incredible live - their unique (but similar) blend and harmony of voices. I haven't decided which CD of theirs I like better. I liked "The Angel In the House" but didn't care for the ending track. IMHO it was very out of place. "Grace and Gravity" was at least consistent. What do you think? Some Northern Calif. concerts coming up that unfortunately I won't be able to attend are: Tuesday, May 17 Ani DiFranco The Great American Music Hall, San Francisco Wednesday, May 18 Frente! Monday, May 30 Sam Phillips (one of many artists appearing for big Memorial Day weekend music festival - Laguna Seca Daze) Laguna Seca Recreation Area, Monterey Tuesday, May 31 Sam Phillips The Great American Music Hall, S.F. I didn't meet any Ecto folks at singer/songwriter Deborah Levoy's concerts, but figure some day I will. She put on the most awesome concert last night at The White Raven in Felton. If any of you get a chance to see her live, do! Someday you'll thank me for it! Her audiences are growing and she is a sure sellout in Santa Cruz. She is a versatile folk/rock/jazz performer who sings and plays guitar masterfully. Last night she did a rendition of an old jazz tune done by many great women of jazz (sorry... don't remember the name of it) with just the sounds of bass player Dan Ward's fretless bass and Deborah's totally captivating, dynamic, and sensual voice. Woah! Unfortunately, her "Hungry City" 1992 released CD (her only one to date) does not show the true power of Deborah Levoy. Her next release due out this year boasts to be significantly better at showing her off. I'm certainly looking forward to it. If you want the actual contents of any or all of these tapes, please e-mail me. Besides, each ordered tapes comes complete with a full cassette label and a separate printed content list. * Sounds great! How do I get a copy of any or all of these tapes? Three methods are available for getting the tapes: * Establish a cassette account. In other words, send me a check to cover the cost of cassettes, packaging, and postage. Put in as much as you want, not necessarily just to cover a single order (though you can do that, too). After your first order, anytime you want a cassette, you just e-mail me, and I fill your order as soon as possible without your mailing me anything. In this case, I would dip into my own supply of medium-quality chrome cassettes which I've ordered in bulk (Thanks, Mitch!). Accounts can be opened or closed at any time. Put in as much as you want, as more tapes will be added. * Establish a cassette account, as in 1, except that I will purchase whatever type of tape you specifically request. Obviously the cost of the tape will be higher, though the packaging and postage will be the same. * Send me the cassettes you want to put the music on (C-90 or C-100) along with money to cover packaging and return postage. I will copy the tapes you request and return them. Consider opening an account, as it will save you having to mail an order, let alone the cassettes. * How much will it cost? If you use my stash of cassettes, the cost for the cassettes is currently $1.22 each. The packaging for mailing the cassettes is between $0.35 and $0.62, depending on the number of tapes mailed. The postage varies according to the number of tapes and the destination. So far, it has ranged between $0.98 and $16.70. Big help, eh? If you wish a more precise estimate of your postage costs, I can give you one via e-mail. US orders will be mailed book rate, taking five to seven days. Non-US orders will be air mailed, taking about seven to ten days. As for foreign payments, so far everyone has sent either American cash or a money order denominated in US currency. I believe that I can handle anything denominated in US currency, and probably any cashier's check (a check drawn on the bank's rather than a personal account). * Where do I send the order? To me. My mailing address: Doug Burks 2036 West Plum Street C7 Fort Collins CO 80521 USA Orders will be processed in the order I get them, with special dispensation for foreign orders. Please note that I will not process any e-mail orders unless you have an open cassette account. * Can I add a tape to the tape dubbing project? If you have a tape or three that you would like to add, just ask yourself the simple question, "Would other Ectophiles like to hear this?" If you are uncertain, trying asking Ecto itself. In either case, if the answer is "Yes", I would be happy to add it. * Anything else I should know? Just a few odds and ends: If I make any mistakes, I will replace the tape for free. I intend to post a progress report on the dubbing operation regularly. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! In case you are wondering what that project is, the tape dubbing project FAQ should be hanging somewhere around this post. Klaus has already posted about the two-tape German sampler that he and his cohorts compiled, including the full tape listing. I just wanted to make its availability official. Come and get it! Michael Pearce submitted a single tape called Proto Ecto. Rather than ramble on my own, I'll include Michael's own description and notes here: ---------- Proto Ecto tape Side 1 Marianne Faithfull Counting Loveinamist, 1967 Coquillage Loveinamist, 1967 Time Takes Time First album, 1965 He'll Come Back To Me First album, 1965 Paris Bells First album, 1965 I Have A Love Loveinamist, 1967 Mary McCaslin Every Day of My Life Goodnight Everybody, 9/69 You Keep Me Hanging On Goodnight Everybody, 9/69 To Some Cool Iced Blue Shore Goodnight Everybody, 9/69 Music Strings/Oh, Hollywood Way Out West, 1973 Way Out West Way Out West, 1973 Prairie In The Sky Prairie In The Sky, 1975 The Dealer Prairie In The Sky, 1975 My Love Prairie In The Sky, 1975 Side 2 Penny Nichols Yellow Chimes Penny's Arcade, 12/67 Look Around Rock Penny's Arcade, 12/67 Mary Hopkin Love Is The Sweetest Thing Post Card, 3/69 Y Blodyn Gwyn Post Card, 3/69 The Honeymoon Song Post Card, 3/69 Voyage of the Moon Post Card, 3/69 Lullaby of the Leaves Post Card, 3/69 Susan Carter Young Girl Blues Wonderful Deeds and Adventures, 1971 Lani Hall Sun Down Sun Down Lady, 1972 Shelby Flint The Lily Cast Your Fate To The Wind, 1967 John Stewart and Buffy Ford Dark Prairie Signals Through the Glass, 1968 Lily and Maria Melt Me Ismene-Jasmine, 11/68 NOTES: Marianne Faithfull had a few hits starting in 1965 with "This Little Bird." _Loveinamist_ was an English release that came out after she had quit having those hits. Marianne disappeared into alcohol, heroin and mistreatment by Mick Jagger and others, resurfacing with a gravely voice and punk repertoire in the early 1980s. Even though she had a power and intensity lacking in her early work, her first incarnation is very special to me. Mary McCaslin sold her records through guitar shops (on the Philo label) after her first album went nowhere commercially. Her interpretation of "You Keep Me Hanging On" was a minor hit in the days when Top 40 was a little more flexible than it is today. She grew up in the nastier suburbs of LA and was attracted to Western music (the seldom-heard other half of Country & Western), the most notable proponent of which was Marty Robbins ("My Love"). Her songs reveal a longing for those open prairie skies and a horse to ride into the sunset. Quoted from her album _Way Out West_: "We moved to California (the suburbs of Los Angeles) when I was six years old. I had always loved westerns on TV, and was excited to be moving out west where there would be wide open spaces and cowboys and horses. However, LA didn't quite turn out to be like that. "I grew up listening to country and western music and rock 'n' roll. I always had music in my head. In fact, my father once said that if I ever fell and split my head open, little guitars and horses and records would fall out. "I loved Marty Robbins' western ballads, but could never imagine myself singing about gunning down someone with a long barrelled gun in the name of law and order, or because I was goaded into it, or to satisfy a grudge. But the music -- all those three-quarter time ballads -- painted beautiful pictures. The tawny colored prairie, windy starry nights, and jagged badlands -- those are the pictures I saw. ""Oh Hollywood" was written by a good friend named Bob Simpson. The stars in the sidewalks (for anyone who has never been to or heard much about Hollywood) are a tourist's delight. They run all along the sidewalks on both sides of Hollywood Blvd. in that section of Los Angeles. Along with each star is the name of either a movie star, a recording star, or a TV star. Hollywood Blvd. is full of tourists walking into each other and Jesus freaks passing out bible tracts. The whole town is full of people trying to make it in either the music business or the acting business. ""Way Out West" is one of the first songs I wrote. I tried to paint a picture of the part of the west where I wanted to be. Three-quarter time ballads are not the only way to create that picture; in fact, for this song, I don't think three-quarter time would have worked. The chords would have been the wrong color and couldn't have blended with the words. I love story songs and this was my first attempt at writing one." She did not write liner notes for the other two albums. Penny Nichols recorded for Buddah Records (as did Cat Stevens), at the time reputed to be a "bubble-gum" label, i.e. records for young teens. She hung out with contemporaries Jackson Browne and Tim Buckley, and performed at the Big Sur Folk Festival. This was a very good record, but it did not sell and she never did another (to my knowledge). Mary Hopkin was a discovery of Paul McCartney, who signed her to Apple Records. She released three albums for them and had a couple of hits, but did not do as well as expected. She was a song stylist rather than a singer- songwriter; she never wrote her own material. Susan Carter is the most obscure one here; she was married to a DJ friend of mine back in 1970, and he produced a record for her. She sang in various clubs around LA, performing blues standards and Billie Holliday songs. While her range was limited, she had an intensity about her that still comes through. This was her only album. Lani Hall sang for six years with Brasil '66; she wound up marrying Herb Alpert. This is the most "mainstream" song on here and is included to restore the reputation of a good song that was ruined by the Captain and Tennille, who rewrote the lyrics, performed cheesy instrumentals and called it "Muskrat Love." Here it's just called "Sun Down" and deserves its rightful place in history. Lani is still recording, as a mainstream pop singer. Shelby Flint first scored with a breathy-voiced "Angel On My Shoulder" in 1961. She had a couple of followups over the next two years, and disappeared beneath the British wave in 1964. This album came out in 1967, and buried her almost as deeply in a wave of lush orchestrations and over-production. "The Lily" is the best-sounding track on this disk. An aside: I sought her out in 1970 and tried to produce her next album. She was between labels and writing for other artists at that time. We laid down 12 tracks at a friend's studio and I almost got her signed to a new label. At the last minute, she went off and signed with someone else, leaving me with an unreleased tape of songs that has been in my possession ever since. I don't know what to do with it; I have no rights to it. Thank my naivete for not doing the legal thing properly, or knowing anything about promoting artists. That was my only attempt to get into the music business. Buffy Ford sang with John Stewart on this album, the full title of which is (deep breath): "We're all so curiously alone, but it's important to keep making SIGNALS THROUGH THE GLASS --John Updike". She had the purest voice I had heard; you could tune a piano by it. John Stewart is the more known of the two, of course, having hit with "July You're A Woman" which is on this record, and also on his solo record, which followed. Buffy lives in Northern California (last time I checked) and did not record again. This could also be referred to as a "western" album, with folk leanings. Buffy is showcased strongest on this track. Lily and Maria released the album _Ismene-Jasmine_ 11/68. I think they were folk singers. When reviewing it for this tape, I wondered why I even kept it (not very good) until I got to the track Melt Me (included). Wonder why they didn't do all their stuff like this. There is a lot more from that era; maybe someday I will have to make a "Proto Ecto II" tape. Enjoy! ---------- Biting my tongue to avoid editorial comments [ :) ], I remain ...
