Then, I went into a little bit of a retreat from the net, in order to actually get something done. I received a compilation of some earlier ecto posts about Melissa. But, I never did get a chance to say thanks to the person who mailed me the posts. Unfortunately, I had to download and clear from memory much of my amassed email treasure, so these posts are there and I am here and without the name of my benefactor. To said benefactor: Thank You. In my last two weeks or so at this address, but not, hopefully, my last two weeks on the internet and ecto forever, I thought that I would try to start a thread of discussion. Much of Happy's music expresses pain, beautifully if still painfully. A few songs right out talk about dealing with pain. 'Warpaint', for example, talks about a Happy who has hardened her emotional self with her scars so that she will not feel the pain of her existence. It expresses a world view in which she must be at constant war, must be tough and strong. She sees her past only as one painful episode after another. In a similar vein is Kate's song 'Lily': "You must protect yourself with fire". In contrast, Happy has another song that presents a way of dealing with pain: 'Given In'. In this song, Happy learns to live her life even with all of the pain in it, and without resorting to drastic means such as cutting herself off from the world. Instead of mentally cutting out the parts that hurt inside, or numbing them with scars (choosing not to let these wounds heal), Happy decides that she must accept the wounds, let them heal, and let in the slings and arrows of the outside world, for she "cannot live without one of them". Thus, she does what she can to control herself, her feelings, her reactions: "I do what I can to keep to keep on top of every one of them". I see the latter song as expressing a much healthier response to pain, though I must admit that I often respond to it in more of a Warpaint style. What do you think? Do you think that this is a valid analyis of the situation? Are there any other songs (Happy or other) which either describe facets of these two categories, or which express other ways of dealing with pain? And finally, where do you stand in this schema? The Kon was great - I'll be posting at more length about the whole experience later, but for now I just wante d to mention that one of the highlights of the Kon for this (and other :) ectophile was witnessing the single largest instance of Happyvanglization to date, which occurred when our own Geoff Parks convinced (or was that browbeat? ;) Dave Cross to play the acoustic tribute version of "Feed The Fire" during the second inerval, for the obvious reason. Vickie was dying a thousand deaths and going to heaven after each one while the song was playing over the ssytem for about 1,000 people (captive audience, no less!), and after it was over Dave Cross announced that Uli Grepel had Happy Samplers to give to interested parties down by the stage. He gave them away in literally 3 seconds, and Vickie gave all of hers away, as well. We also met a couple of British Happy fans who aren't on the Net, but I'll let Vickie tell that story. :) I just wanted to let you all know about that little incident... and to publickly thank Geoff for throwing the best Ecto gathering yet - and also for being a great host. When Sarah McLachlan's _Fumbling Towards Ecstasy_ came out, I saw all the raves for it and put it on the list of CDs to think about buying. However, I do not have the CD-buying prowess of, say, woj, so it's taken me a while. A few weeks ago just about everyone I know at work, including me, got CD-ROM drives in their computers. The drives came with small stereo speakers to go with the Sound Blaster that was part of the package. So I immediately moved my CD collection (small, but growing) in to work and used the drive as a CD player. A couple of weeks ago I decided I should build up my CD-buying skills and orderd FTE. Then last Thursday I caught Sarah on Letterman and that reminded me that I had the CD on order and that it had almost certainly came in. Last Friday I picked it up. Where have I been? I have been hearing people rave about Sarah for a long time, including one of my co-workers, and hearing FTE made me understand why. She is truly another addition to the pantheon. I've heard _Under the Pink_ already, and I would have to join those who say FTE makes UtP seem under the weather. The highlight of the album for me is the special surprise acoustic version of "Possession" that is appended to the last track. I didn't notice it until I made a tape of the album for my walkman at a friend's place and left the CD player running; I remembered it being discussed here but fortunately forgot about it so that it was still a surprise. I'm even thinking of trying to see a Sarah show, since I also remember something about her tour bringing her through Portland later this month. ======================================================================== From: "Andy Wee/(419) 634-0410" Subject: Re: The Indians Date: Tue, 10 May 1994 05:44:35 -0500 (EDT) Forwarded message: > From daemon Mon May 9 19:02:39 1994 > Date: Mon, 9 May 94 20:30:33 +1000 > Message-Id: <9405100630.181q@xymox.apana.org.au> > Reply-To: anthony@xymox.apana.org.au > Organization: Xymox UUCP System, Melbourne Australia > From: anthony@xymox.apana.org.au (Anthony Horan) > To: ecto@ns1.rutgers.edu > Subject: The Indians Anthony said: > Simple question = boring post! :-) > hmmm....i don't think any question is every boring.... :> > Is anyone familiar with a band called The Indians, who did the end credit > song in the film "Kalifornia"? The Konvention was great except for the shortage of food and the poor quality of the live music (if anyone is interested in reading what I wrote to the organisers about the latter, let me know). The Planetarium had set up a viewing area in a downtown park, with a large projected image of the sun, and was selling protective glasses (good for a maximum 15 seconds sungazing at a stretch) for $3 apiece. I got there shortly after the eclipse had begun, and bought one of the possibly overpriced viewing aids, which consisted of aluminized plastic film lenses set into cardboard frames. It took me a couple of minutes to figure out how to use the glasses; initially, i looked through them to find a closeup of my own face. Eventually, I got the hang of wrapping them around my own glasses, shading the edges of this assem- bly, and--most importantly--glancing in the correct direction to see the sun. That accomplished, I alternated between tracking the motion of the sun around the rear of the moon, and observing the social interaction around me at ground level. Initially, not much appeared to go on above; a slowly growing semicir- cle was being taken out of the sun, but that was not very different from the partial eclipses I'd seen a number of times before, and the sun continued to shine normally for the moment. A couple of cops sat around a table; they apparently were familiar with the ancient-to-medieval theory of eclipses as godly responses to whatever, as one of them made a quip on the order of first they execute Gacy, and now this. There was a stand on-site set up by a local caterer, selling simple food for outrageous prices. Eventually I became simultaneously hungry enough, and interested enough in staying on top of the stellar phenomena, to be willing to pay $2.50 for a simple hot dog. It lasted too short a time for the price, of course. It began to get darker and cooler, and the crowd began to get bigger. A couple of people asked me where to get viewing glassses; I responded that they were sold out, the astronomers who were emceeing the event having previ- ously announced that. After the first such inquiry, I mused that I could have recouped my original investment by selling mine to her. It then occurred to me that I would thereby have been reduced to tracking the overlapping circles on the projection device, with no possibility of looking at the real thing. Over the course of the afternoon, a few people asked if they could look through my glasses, and I lent them for brief periods, feeling vaguely self-satisfied over this expression of good socialist values. The astronomers set up a tele- scope, and people lined up for momentary views of the eclipse. I lined up with them. The image in the telescope was a little sharper than the one through the glasses, or the projected image, but otherwise not very different from the others. The drops in temperature and lighting levels didn't seem all that drastic; the astronomers announced that there was about an 8 to 10 degree drop in the temperature, and illumination was about 30 percent of normal. As the scheduled peak in the eclipse neared, the subjective light and heat levels did seem to drop a little more. As the witching hour approached, the visible sun became more and more crescent- shaped. I quipped to myself that Procter and Gamble probably would have paid through the nose to project their man-in-the-moon logo down from the heavenly bodies, but that it would have confirmed the view some fringe groups have of them as a bunch of satanists. NPR was broadcasting Nelson Mandela's inaugura- tion on a tape delay, and it occurred to me that to play the new South African national anthem under shots of the eclipse would be an ideal backdrop for the weather breaks on tonight's _World News Now_. I ran into the president of one of the local professional organizations I belong to, out to lunch and eclipse gazing simultaneously. Finally, the climax was reached; the crescent of vis- ible sun became as narrow as it would get. I asked an astronomer standing nearby if there'd be a full circle of light around the moon. He said there wouldn't be full annularity downtown, that the closest place for that was 60 miles to the south. For the next hour, the process moved into reverse, and the novelty wore off for many of the spectators. The crowd thinned out rapidly. I stayed on, to watch the visible sun gradually expand again. I recalled that one of Rhino's "Brit- ish invasion" compilations had "Everyone's Gone to the Moon" by Jonathan King, and "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" by the Walker Brothers on adjacent tracks, and it occurred to me that this was somehow appropriate to the events of the day. I started back through the park, pausing occasionally to check on the sun't progress toward full visibility. I wondered if the party hats that were reportedly to be installed on the bronze lions in front of the Art Instit- ute, for a noontime celebration of the centennial of their installation, were still there. I made a point of walking by there on the way to the bus. The hats were still in place. It was a minor footnote to what must have been an unusual day in human history: On the same day, John Wayne Gacy was executed, Nelson Mandela assumed the presidency of South Africa, there was an annular eclipse of the sun, one of the cats out in back of my place had kittens again, and the Art Institute lions were wearing party hats. It's what editors often call a heavy news day. Rumours were we would have 94% of the sun covered and the day started out beautifully. All sunny and clear. Then...in the crucial hour, the sky clouded up. In the crucial half hour when the shadow would be noticeably moving across the sun and causing the sky to darken, it started to rain. Then, when it was all over, the sky cleared up and became sunny again. One would almost think it was planned! Buffalo weather is known for being unpredictable but this is ridiculous.... :-) Quenby ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 10 May 94 22:57:05 GMT From: johnh@astro.as.utexas.edu (John Higdon) Subject: RE: A heavy news day Mitch says: >I recalled that one of Rhino's "British invasion" compilations had >"Everyone's Gone to the Moon" by Jonathan King, and "The Sun Ain't Gonna >Shine Anymore" by the Walker Brothers on adjacent tracks, and it occurred >to me that this was somehow appropriate to the events of the day. What! You didn't immediately start thinking of "Don't Give Up"? I missed the eclipse here in Texas. I was too lazy with finals to get up in time for its earlier appearance here. I felt better later, though, when one of my housemates said that he was up then and took a look outside-- overcast! Well, I still have my pitiful memory of watching the 1991 total eclipse from way the hell away from the swath of totality. The best part I thought then was seeing the partially eclipsed sun, at its peak, projecting its image through the natural pinhole cameras made by the leaves in the trees. I have a photograph of the multitude of overlapping crescents shining upon the concrete sidewalk in front of my home. I was told by my housemate, who got a call from one of the tour guys out at McDonald Observatory near Ft. Davis, Texas (Frank, the housemate, will be working there again this summer), that the eclipse was a great success there. Through the hydrogen alpha filter, which shows solar activity very well, they could see a detached prominence. Apparently, it seemed as if the moon had sprouted its own tendrils. John H. The wedding is set for 8/13/94. So far the plans are going pretty good. Got most of the major stuff done. Now for how I did it!: 10/2 was my brother's wedding. We're twins, so I wanted to do something special. I was also the best man. Since I wanted to ask Karen to marry me anyway, I figured that that day would be it. So I called up Bill & Jen and asked them if it was OK. This was about a month ahead of time. That whole time people would ask me if I had my 'best man speech' ready. I told everyone that I was gonna wing it. Needless to say, the time came for the speech and that's when I asked her! Awaiting your submissions as editor, I remain ... [Sub-Headline, E6] Iota thrives as a Philadelphia rocker, and keeps a grip on her independence. [Picture E1: Picture of a young woman in a leather jacket, long red hair, holding a left handed guitar, looking to the left. Caption:] Iota, a 22-year-old singer and guitarist, financed her recording "Take Me Like a Man" herself.] On Music, By Tom Moon She's the first to admit she had help along the way, but Iota -- Philadelphia's own one-name rocker -- wants to make one thing clear. She financed the recording and pressing of her debut -Take Me Like a Man- (Dewey Leaf Productions) herself, on her earnings as a waitress. "I didn't want it to be a thing where success would depend on favors," she said between bites of breakfast at a Center City diner recently. "I don't expect anything from strangers, and I didn't want to owe anybody anything. I make sure the musicians always get paid, we split the gig money four ways." The 22-year-old singer, guitarist and songwriter carries that independence into her songs, which bemoan impulsive behavior ("Things You Can't Undo") and yearn for love ("In My Bed") with a cool vocal detachment that may remind some of Chrissie Hynde. Though she admits to few female role models, Iota says she does use her gender to her advantage: She can get away with songs that men might have to explain, such as a new work, "Knocked Up." Iota -- who won't divulge her real name, but says even her parents call her that now -- gets to play music only once a week. Her band includes guitarist E. J. Howarth, Bassist Steve Cochran and drummer Ritchie DeCarlo, but she can't lure DeCarlo away from his lucrative cover-band gig. He's given her one night a week. "I used my feminine guile to talk him into that," she laughs -- but her voice betrays how eager she is to play more. After working a string of Wednesdays at the North Star, Iota is doing a rare Friday gig at Rex's in West Chester this week. "We do have a CD out there, and it's like, playing gigs is the only way to promote it. It's gradually getting better, we're working more often. But I'm impatient; I want to quit the day job, buy a truck and get on the road." Iota graduated from Lower Merion High School, but didn't start getting serious about music until she was a student at Widener University. She and her friends were taking in the last set at a student hangout where "a bad cover band was playing," and fueled by drink, her friends taunted her into singing. She met the musicians, and began collaborating with them on an occasional basis. That turned in to Iota and the Minor Details, which toiled for two years in area clubs. Those who caught the band in its early incarnations remember Iota painting with "squeeze cheese and crackers" and playing with Barbie dolls on stage. "There was a lot of time when I wasn't singing, so I did this performance art thing to keep occupied." Then one day in February 1993 it hit her. Iota, who was the group's principle songwriter, realized her music wasn't being executed the way she intended it. She grabbed a few members of the Minor Details and struck out on her own. The new band recorded -Take Me- in October, and has been gigging steadily since then. Selections from the CD were played on WXPN (88.5-FM) before it was even available in stores; now it's in regular rotation, and in record stores throughout the Philadelphia area. "The good thing about Philly is people don't hear about things if you don't want them to," Iota says. "That means you can do whatever you want and develop. Since people think that nothing good comes out of here, you can take chances here, you can experiment." ------ 30 ------ ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 11 May 1994 11:40:54 -0400 (EDT) From: "she listens like her head's on fire.." Kendra Smith joins 4AD Northern California based recording artist Kendra Smith has signed to 4AD, worldwide. Kendra has begun recording her first solo disc for the label, slated for release in early fall. She currently has ten songs in demo form, with plans to segue the tracks together via sound collage. The disc's instrumentation will be centered around an antique pump organ and will implement a wide scope of instruments such as violin, Turkish drums and Indian harmonium. "And of course, the distorgan, fuzz guitar and bass, three of my favorite traditional instruments," says Kendra. "So far, the music ranges from twisted classical to organic electric pop, but I make no predictions. The random factor is part of the plan." Kendra was drawn to 4AD by the label's size and artistic focus. "I can deal directly with 4AD without the usual labyrinth of intermediaries and suits." As to the label's music, "I had intentionally stopped keeping up with new sounds on the 'outside', and knew 4AD mainly by reputation, so I was pleased when I enjoyed the tapes that Ivo sent me. Meanwhile I'm still listening to Syd, Can, Faust, Eno and a good amount of Middle and Near Eastern music. Certain melodies and frequencies attract me, but I find them here and there, and not entirely in commercially produced music. It's pretty obvious the artform has been vampirized, and its social and spiritual functions altered bizarrely by narcissism and greed." Kendra originally achieved critical acclaim as founding member of Los Angeles based outfits The Dream Syndicate, Clay Allison and Opal. After her exit from the latter, she departed from the urban grind of Los Angeles, feeling the need to get out of the system and reassess what was truly necessary. Subsequently, Kendra now prefers to live in the woods without modern conveniences. Her way of life is "primitive and can be physically and 'psychically' demanding." says Kendra, "but it's satisfying to me. There are many opportunities to study nature and conduct scientific experiments. I know enough of humans already..." Regarding her sabbatical from public performing, she adds, "when the music calls for it. Sometimes you learn more by not playing, which makes me a genius, right?" However, Kendra's break from music was ended on a Northern California road-trip when she discovered an old pump organ in a dusty shop corner. "I touched it once and knew it would open musical doors for me, I began to consider recording again." Then in 1992, Kendra officially returned by releasing "The Guild of Temporal Adventurers" EP (Fiasco). It was written and recorded in two weeks with two members of the elusive Guild, plus an assortment of fellow conspirators. The disc displayed Kendra's penchant for beautiful melodies and as a result, ended up on many year end Top 10 Lists. ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 11 May 94 19:25:30 EDT From: woj@remus.rutgers.edu (lasagna breeze) Subject: lisa germano press release [reposted without permission] To: 4ad-l@jhuvm.hcf.jhu.edu Subject: Lisa Germano press release Date: Thu, 05 May 94 22:01:42 -0700 From: nelson@eggneb.astro.ucla.edu This is the latest Lisa Germano press release from 4AD. To find evidence of Lisa Germano's many instrumental talents, then a cursory listen to 'Happiness' or even a glimpse at her session credits will suffice. But to hear what she really has to say, you may have to lean in a little closer because Lisa doesn't sing her heart out... she just whispers it into your ear. After contributing material to the film 'Falling From Grace', Lisa recorded the largely DIY album, 'On The Way Down From The Moon Palace', for her own Major Bill label (named so because the disc's production cost set her back a "major bill"). The acclaim following the release of '...Moon Palace' led to Germano inking with Capitol and recording 'Happiness' in New Orleans with Daniel Lanois associate Malcolm Burn. Shortly after its release, 4AD's Ivo Watts-Russell attended the 'In Their Own Words' songwriters showcase at LA's Troubadour and found himself intrigued by Lisa's performance. He then approached Capitol about licensing the 'Happiness' Lp for worldwide rights at a time when that company was undergoing internal changes, and subsequently, all parties agreed that 4AD may be a more suitable home for Lisa's future. 4AD's issue of the 'Happiness' LP features material remixed by John Fryer and Ivo, different artwork & running order, extra tracks ("Betty Says...", "Destroy The Flower", The Earth"), "You Make Me Want To Wear Dresses" has transformed into "The Dresses Song", and 'Happiness' now excludes the cover of "These Boots Are Made For Walking". Considering the scrutiny and re-assessment that the 'Happiness' sessions produced, it's a testament to Lisa's abilities that the disc is so veracious. Joyless at the core, laments like "What a waste to feel the way I feel" can be found on 'Around The World' while "pain and sadness are real to me" punctuate the LPs title track (if these confessions appear to be lifted from Germano's diary, it's because they are). Yet despite the allusions to personal torment, Lisa's songs never become bogged down in despair, largely because they're leavened with a pop veneer and an impish sense of humor, "You wish you were pretty but you're not... ha, ha, ha." ("Bad Attitude"). And the extremes are musical as well as emotional, 'Happiness' runs from the plaintive, folky approach of "Cowboy" and "Energy" to texturally dense numbers like "Puppet" without sounding out of context. Germano feels that this version of 'Happiness' is "darker, and makes the idea of happiness more elusive. The contradiction is obvious, so the listener will question it that much more." ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 11 May 94 19:27:52 EDT From: woj@remus.rutgers.edu (lasagna breeze) Subject: angela conway news From: homulka@casbah.acns.nwu.edu (Thomas Homulka) Subject: (non-4AD): **REISSUE OF P'O** (finally!) For anyone who is not familiar with this, it's a collaboration bewtween Graham Lewis, Bruce Gilbert (both of Wire) and Angela Conway (A. C. Marias) from 1983. This comes from the latter period of the Gilbert/Lewis experimental period (1980-1983). This has been nearly impossible to find on vinyl (I haven't found a copy yet). It's one of the last of the major Gilbert/Lewis releases to finally be reissued on CD format (except for the MZUI project at Waterloo Gallery). The others being.... DOME 1 & 2 (Mute Records DOME12CD) B.C. Gilbert/G. Lewis "3R4" (4AD Records: CAD 16 CD) - includes "Ends With the Sea" (Gilbert/Lewis) 7" and Cupol "Like This for Ages/Kluba Cupol" (BAD 009) DOME 3 & 4 (Mute Records DOME34CD) DUET EMMO "Or So It Seems" (CD STUMM 11) - includes "Heart of Hearts" (b-side to 12" of "Or So It Seems") There's also the A. C. Marias 7" of "Drop/So" from 1981 (I think) that's a Gilbert/Lewis/Conway collaboration. ...plus lots of other obscure collaborations A lot of this stuff is very experimental (some people don't like it at all), but others feel that this period had more creativity/originality than the Wire stuff...
