First of all, I would like to humbly apologize for sending my last post twice. I know it wasn't all that interesting once around. It was returned, though not by ecto, from someone on the list. Though I work on a 'puter all day, that doesn't mean I know the first thing about them. Also, being a guvment worker, I don't know much. Okay, Jeff made some comments a while back, which just made there way to me as it seems the ecto digest maker has been acting a bit ornery of late. Anyway, I'll try to get this out of the way quick. (ah, nope) Jeff (? ya got a last name?) sez: >Who's Josh, and have you heard about when tickets are going on sale? I'll >need to purchase some m'self... I see that Josh made good on my oblique strategy and introduced himself to ya'll. Don't let the fact that he knows me sway your judgment against him in any way. We also both have a tendency to blabber and drone on and on, so you've been forwarned. Okay, that's enuf 'bout Josh; Tori is much more interesting. I called the Warner Theater this morning and they weren't very helpful; more like rude. Hopefully, there will be something in City Paper (the DC free weekly for those with the good fortune to live outside the beltway) today. >(though, truth be told, I'd rather Sarah were coming back to town instead >of Tori) Well, I haven't seen either of them and I'm not too choosy at this point. The Tori show does sound interesting, though I would be pleased if she just stared back at me for an hour. >Well, at least one other ectophile besides myself has at least vague >knowledge of Arc/Info -- Tim Breitkruetz was "lucky" enough to get to >administer an installation of the package at a former job. He didn't seem >to happy about having done so. ;-) Yeh, "lucky" like having a never-ending root-canal. Who are the sadists that dream this shit up, anyway? Say, do you know of an ARC/INFO for Dummies? I guess the market is too small for that. >I can think of a few other ectophiles who've had to put up with my bitching >and moaning about it whilst in the midst of a project. Hmmm. I suspect >they're going to be hearing a lot more bitching and moaning over the next >couple of weeks as I get my last project of the semester under way... Good Luck! I had the good judgment to avoid the whole wonderful world of GIS whilst in college, but I think I'm paying for it now. My work revolving around the political development of Laos and "The Historical Geography of the United States Brewing Industry" (my thesis!) has not been marketable for some reason, hence my computer foibles. >That's an MA/MLS degree *in* GIS. What will I do with it? Who >knows...it'll be a while anyway...I'll be lucky to finish by August '95. Well, good luck anyway. Maybe by '95 there will be as large of a market for geographers as, say, lawyers. Yeah, right. >What about Marillion? Wrong decade, right concept... Yep, BIG Marillion fan, too. I'm not entirely stuck in the '70s. I whole heartedly recommend their new album _Brave_ for the prog-rock enthusiast. >You don't qualify that comment about being surprised by Warpaint. Do you >like the electronic nature, or would you prefer something more acoustic? >If the former, go with _Equipoise_. If the latter, go with Volume I or II. >Or just get RhodeSongs. I happen to know it's in stock at the downtown >Tower. (as are Warpaint, Equipoise, Rearmament, and another disc or two) That's where I got _Warpaint_. I think I'll get _RhodeSongs_ next. Actually, Josh owes me a boatload of tapes (and I taped _Warpaint_ for him), so I'll probably suggest he buys the entire Happy catalogue. >Welcome to Ecto...it's nice to have another local online. Are you going to >the Loreena McKennitt concert? There will be a definite ecto contingent >there... It's nice to be nice to the nice (an ancient M*A*S*H line for ya'll). I'm still a little behind the times and haven't heard Loreena yet. But Josh said she's sort of "Gabrielesque" (Peter, that is), and that's good enough for me. A note to Klaus wrt his German discography: a friend of mine and germophile has picked up every BAP record he could lay his hands on during his several trips to Germany. They have some prog-overtones and I even like the singing, though I can't understand a word of it. I think that's enough blabbing for now. See ya'll, Mike (who actually was bright enough this time to spell geography correctly in his subject line -- What a moron!) Thanks to all who responded with offers of ticket assistance. Today I jokingly asked one of my co-workers if she would mind standing in line at the Palace for me on Saturday morning to pick up tickets to a show she doesn't even want to go to, and in all seriousness she said, "No problem. What time should I get there, and how many tickets do you need?" I think my jaw is still on the floor next to her desk somewhere. Anyway... I was in a record store today and didn't find the Cornflake Girl CD single, but I did see a pile of cassingles! They're packaged just like the UK PGY double-CD single, with multicolored block lettering and pictures of Tori's face on one side and her standing in the upright coffin with fishnet dress on the other. "Honey" is on the b-side. ("Sister Janet" is on the b-side of the "God" cassingle, by the way- the picture on that one is the same shot from the "Tea With The Waitress" CD.) Hey, if you're online when you get the Digest tonight, turn on your television to CBS, Sarah McLachlan's going to be on Letterman any minute now! (Sarah is following Tori around on tour again - back in '92 Sarah played the same venue as Tori within a few days in quite a few major cities, and so far they've been chasing each other from city to city, venue to venue on their current tours. Tori's coming back to New York, and I hear buzzing to the effect that Sarah's also going to be at the Beacon Theater in June... strange, huh?) I'm off to London. Before y'all think that I don't know Loreena from Shinola, let me set the record straight. My first impression of TM&TM was that some of the neo-world-music qualities reminded me of Gabriel's "Passion," especially the first track. The overall spaciousness and depth are also somewhat "Gabrielesque," but I think the similarities end there. I just picked up The Visit (WOW!), and now that I've heard more, the Gabriel comparison sounds quite foolish. Loreena, on the other hand, sounds quite wonderful. Mike, how could you do this to me? I arrived there at midnight so I could tape Sarah's appearance on Letterman. My dad heard me come in (or, more accurately, heard the dogs reacting to my entrance) and came down to make sure it was me and that there wasn't anything wrong. He gave me a *really* odd look when I explained _why_ I'd driven over. I can't help but wonder if I'm the sort of person that Sarah had in mind with "Posession." Of course, with stories like the ones about the signed tattoos, it's hard to be concerned about my own level of interest and/or devotion. (I think it's _wonderful_ that Sarah signed those tat's, after KaTe's refusal at Tower...) Anyway. The performance was, of course marvelous. The band was a bit odd. I didn't see Kershaw anywhere, or Luc, or ...was it Brian?...the bassist. Ash was singing BVs but not playing drums. I gather that the drummer and bassist were from Shaeffer's band. What's-his-name, Sarah's guitarist, was on lead guitar. And Paul Shaeffer played keyboards AND DIDN'T MESS IT UP AT ALL!!! (HURRAH!). All in all, stunning. ------- Before going home, I dropped by Tower, hoping to find a copy of _7=49_. As I think I mentiond a month ago, when I bought my copy, "Knock Intro" just refuses to play on any CD player. I went back two days later, but the album was sold out, never to be seen again. At that time, I went up to an information desk, who told me I didn't need to worry about running out of time in which to replace the disk, and to just check back. Well, a month has gone by, I still haven't seen any new copies, and I went back to the desk--where I happened to speak to the same fellow (he remembered me). I gather he's going to try to specifically order a copy of the CD, but I'm not sure if it'll work (he couldn't find it in his latest Schwann). Anyway. So tonight, I drove to one of the other area Towers, thinking I might find it there. No such luck, but I did find a couple of singles I was interested in--one of the "Pretty Good Year" imports for $7.99 and the "Blood of Eden" single. I took 'em up to the counter, where the fellow who was working had on what I was pretty sure was a Gabriel t-shirt. First he saw my PGY disc and told me I might want to wait for the new domestic single, as it had 5 or 6 tracks. I told him that as I had heard it, the "Cornflake Girl" single was only going to have 3 b-sides, and that didn't include "Black Swan". I then asked if I could see a copy of the new single, which he said they had in the back. Unfortunately, they were short handed and couldn't spare an employee to check for me, so I decided not to buy it. Then the fellow noticed my BoE single and flipped..."WHERE DID YOU FIND THIS? WERE THERE ANYMORE?!" We talked briefly, me saying that I was buying it for the remix of "Mercy Street"* He then talked for a little while about looking for a commercial release of the 11 minute version of "In Your Eyes" with Yossou N'Dour. I then mentioned that my only complaint about the single was that it didn't include the soundtrack version of "Blood of Eden." He gave me a very blank look and kind of murmured "Soundtrack?" I said, "Yeah, it was in _Until the End of the World_." "But I have that soundtrack." "Right. It was in the movie, but didn't make it onto the album. Have you seen it?" "No, but I'm *going* to rent it." Of course, by this time there was a line forming and I was in a hurry to get to my folks and ready myself by the vcr. But it was a fun exchange, and nice talking to someone in a record store with a little intelligence. *On April 22, 1993, just before 9:00 pm**, I heard a dance mix of "Mercy Street" at a club and absolutely flipped out. I was even *more* surprised when I learned on r.m.g (see, it _is_ good for something!) that the remix had been done (or sanctioned by) Gabriel and appeared on a single. I finally found a copy of the single at a time when I could afford it. Wheeee. Until just now, I hadn't even heard the mix a second time since that first listen. **Don't ask how I remember these things. I just do. Mike will verify. On another note, I heard the first single from the upcoming Indigo Girls album. In a word, schizophrenic. First folky, then a vaguely country string quartet, and then a very fast rock song. Fairly well integrated, and very cool (took me a minute to figure out who it could be, and then I had to wait for confirmation...which I got when a lyric about swamp ophelia was reached).
