They talk to 6 people, including Christine Lavine and Neil Gaiman. I wasn't that excited by the article, but any fans may want to seek it out. It's a quick read while standing in the bookstore. Neal ======================================================================== Date: Wed, 4 May 1994 17:23:06 CDT From: Subject: Ah, didactics Sarah's (the one on our list, not the one who did the concert :-) ) reposting of nuggets of wisdom (_vel non_) from today's college students brought back memories of my own days as a TA, particularly those quarters I did either intro or urban sociology. For instance: One student tried to explain the inverse correlation between the percentages of blacks and of persons of foreign stock (immigrants and their immediate child- ren) in a sample of Chicago-area communities, a student theorized that blacks invested in foreign stocks at a lower rate than others. In a sociology of deviance course, a student wrote that one of the causes of delinquency was that the underclass reproduced "like monkeys and xerox." A student in intro noted that the traditional family was declining, and that one of the institutions filling the void was the labor union. She went on to recount the time the family business had been visited by an organizer from an apparently mob-dominated union, offering a choice between protection like family if management would let them organize the workers, and unspecified bad outcomes otherwise. Eventually, I got to the point where I was inspired to respond to some of these bon mots. For instance: A student observed that several Commonwealth dominions mirrored the birth rates of the U.S. over time. He wrote that the baby boom affected not only this country, but also Canada, Australia and New England (sic). I wrote on his paper, "A function of the former ban on contraceptives in Massachusetts?" I once gave out a discussion-section assignment in intro, to expound on the role of toys in the socialization of children. One student noted that nun dolls were always a big-selling toy, because every girl, she stated categor- ically, dreamed of becoming a nun. I wrote back, "When I was a kid, Jewish girls wanted to marry doctors." One youth wrote a particularly unintelligible essay on something or other, and buttered my bread at the end by stating what a challenging assignment it had been. I replied, "No more so than reading this paper," or words to that effect. Now you understand the allure that full-time research has always held for me :-). IN OTHER NEWS: I saw the Spinanes for the first time on Conan, and liked what I heard. It's avowedly a sort of Grunge Lite. What I found most interesting was that they have a guitarist but no bassist, whereas Morphine, as I recall, has a bassist but no guitarist. A certain yin-yang appeal there, somehow. This is a desperate plea. I live in New Haven, Connecticut, less than one mile from the Palace PAC, where Tori Amos will be playing on Monday, June 13. Tickets go on sale at 10:00 AM this Saturday, May 7, and the show has been well-advertised. The only catch is, on Saturday I'm going to be in London for the ecto party/ Kate Bush convention, and thus unable to pick up any tickets. If you are planning to go to this show and, moreover, are planning to go to the Palace box office on Saturday morning to pick up tickets, PLEASE send me e-mail THIS MINUTE, since I won't be able to check mail after Thursday night. If Tori plays less than a mile away from my house and I can't go to the show, I'm going to be VERY upset. I hope one of you can help me out! Thanks... Did you ever have one of those lives? Rather than bitch and moan about my life (work is hell, I might not get tickets to see Tori Amos play within spitting distance of where I live, etc.), I think I'll just Klaus instead. :> Barry asked: > Are there any other Literature or poetry majors in the group? Thanks, Neal. :> Michael wondered: >So why are US viewers so underprivileged? Who decided to change it when there >was a perfectly good Canadian video available to show (it can't be censorship >on religious grounds; they show Madonna, after all!) And if the Canadian >video was produced in protest of (and after) the US video, how come we don't >get both? There's a variety of reasons I can think of: Arista might not have wanted to use a Nettwerk video, for one,. Possibly the best reason (and I think the most accurate) is that the Canadian concept video didn't turn out entirely like Sarah had envisioned when she started out, and she welcomed an opportunity to try again. Personally, I think she was being a bit hard on herself, but that's just me. Neil noted: >As for the Canadian "Possession" video I saw a clip on MuchMusic >(Canada's video station) in which everyone's favourite ageing VJ Terry >David Mulligan interviewed Sarah on the set. It was sort of funny >seeing Sarah slouching about in sweatpants on this distinctly >unglamourous set, with naked and nearly naked extras standing about, a >bit awkwardly. She was bubbling enthusiastically about incorporating >Goddess imagery in her video from a book she'd recently read. :) Some of those nearly naked people are in her band, which is an amusing thought when you're seeing them live on stage and suddenly this image pops into your head of Ash the drummer standing clad only in fig leaf looking entirely out of his league. ;> >Probably the recurring image of Ms McLachlan swaddled in white cotton >like an Egyptian mummy, swinging like a pendulum from chains freaked >out the American record execs. :) Probably. If I ever get to talk to Sarah again, I'm going to ask her just what the hell that was all about. > - Neil K. (who thinks "Steaming" is probably the grooviest McLachlan >video, and the first one she directed) Sarah directed that, too??? Wow. That's my second favorite video of hers, next to "Into The Fire" (which, as I've already said here too many times, is brilliant). I wonder how she got into film and directing? Has she addressed this in any interviews that people know of? Wendy reported: >Sarah McLachlan - "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" > You were right. This is great. I especially liked songs "Possession" > and "Circle". She is definitely fumbling her way into my heart. :) :) :) I forgive you for Heidi Berry now. >Concrete Blond - "Bloodletting" > I can't stop playing this. That's the one. They're scholars of early music, and met in school (I want to say they were at Columbia, but I'm not certain of that). >They specialize in early music, which tends to be lumped >in with the rest of the amorphously categorized "classical" music, which >is probably why you can't find them! As a subgenre, early music (unfortunately) >tends not to be well represented in most stores; I've had the best luck in >small stores that choose carefully or those that specialize in choral music. And lotsa people have NO CLUE what they're missing, imnsho. My best friend's father doesn't like me because the first time I went to her house I was marvel- ing at his collection of classical music recordings (an entire room in their house is lined floor to ceiling with records and CDs) and asked if he had any Medieval music. He snorted that "music didn't exist before 1545", and I immediately took issue with that presumption. He hasn't treated me civilly since. Hrmpf. >The release that I am most familiar with is "An English Ladymass" (it >may be spelled with more medieval orthography), a collection of hymns, >readings, and so forth dedicated to Mary. Gino's East sounds a bit like Naples Pizza here in New Haven, which has been a Yale undergraduate hangout for years and years. Bring Your Own Penknife. All of the paneling and booths and benches are made of wood, and every inch of that wood has had something carved into it over the years. Once a year or so they paint over everything so people can start again, but it's only a matter of time before there's nothing left. :) I haven't been there in a while, but the next time I go, I'll be sure to remember my Swiss Army Knife and leave a few names of my pantheon behind... Josh wondered: >Speaking of Fripp, I >wonder if the Ectophiles are aware of an album that Fripp did with Toyah >Willcox (his wife). I think the coolest thing is how she fingers an imaginary guitar when she doesn't have a real one in her hands - you can see her "playing" David's or Luc's part totally unconsciously, while she's wrapped up in what she's singing. A true musician to the core, that one. >I will be going to Loreena in NYC on May 12th. Wheeeeeeeeee!!! :P :P :P Loreena sold out on Friday afternoon. An hour and a half later, they swung the doors to the lobby open and led the first 50 or so people to the entrance of the theatre. Since that didn't clear enough people out of the way, they led another 50 or so people to another set of doors. About 10 minutes later, on the count of three, they threw 4 doors to the theatre open to allow a footrace into a dark, unfamiliar theatre in the round. Wound up with one bruise and a 3rd row seat, slightly right of center. I've never been to the Sheldon, but it could not possibly be a more "intimate" setting than Westport. The first row could put their feet on the stage; nobody could have been more than 200 feet from her. Sarah was outstanding and really seemed to enjoy herself. "Wierd. All you people can see is my butt. I guess you get what you pay for." I'd guess there were about 750-1000 people there and, though the stage can rotate, they chose (thankfully) to rope off the worst seats and keep it stationary. The only really bad seats were apparently the 25-30 that the local commercial alternative radio station gave away. The most surprising part of the concert (for me anyway) was her performance of "Hold On". I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it, but it wasn't what I was expecting. Not that I didn't enjoy it. In fact, I understand it better now, I think. Just caught me by surprise. The only drawback was the incessant shouting of "I love you Sarah" and "We love you Sarah" by quite a few of the teenage girls in the audience every time the music stopped. You could tell it was really starting to embarass her, though she was polite (perhaps too much so), always responding with a "Thank you" except for the time she was overwhelmed and could only respond with a giggling, head-bowwed "Oh dear". Got a nice long Sarah Smile(pat. pending) during "Drawn to the Rhythm". Different than a Tori Stare(tm), but no less intense. Anyway, on to the second subject: Saw on the Muse system at Best Buy that Shelia Chandra has a new album scheduled for release in May, 1994. I immediately forgot the name. Any word on this? Are all of Monsoon's cd's out of print? 8( bob ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
