She had a classical singing education and moved to West Berlin in 1976. In '78 she recorded her first album with the Nina Hagen Band. It became pretty notorious, because of the provocative lyrics, e.g. about teenage prostitutes and feminism. Also her particularly agressive, unusual way to sing and her heavy make-up made her famous. Her fame didn't last long. The band left her and started their own career (also very briefly) as Spliff. It became pretty quiet around her. She moved to the USA and recorded some albums in English. With her latest album (No. 8 "Revolution Ballroom") she's trying for a comeback. She is, without doubt, one of the most extrovert German singers. --- Bobo in white wooden houses Bobo or Bobolina, whose real name is Christiane Hebold, was born in 1966 near Halle in the former GDR, a minister's daughter. After years of singing in church choirs she began an education as a singer. After that she moved to East-Berlin and started a rock band with guitarist Frank Heise. The name of the band has it's origin through norwegian friends who invited them to see the countries white wooden houses. As they couldn't leave the country they used it as the bands name instead. Singing in english (written by Bobo), they had no chance to get support by the east german record industry, so their music was mostly distributed as tapes at concerts. After the german reunification they had no problem getting signed by a major german record company. So far they have released two albums. They are a very strong live act. --- Inga & Anete Humpe Not actually a band, more a project of sisters Inga & Anete Humpe, who also worked together as "Humpe & Humpe". Mainly they've worked seperately with other bands or projects (see also Ideal). --- Ulla Meinecke Ulla Meinecke (born 1953 in Frankfurt) began her career with the help of Udo Lindenberg, whom she had been supporting throughout 1977 to 1979 as singer, secretary and maid-of-all-work. Success came only with her Album "Wenn schon nicht fuer immer, dann wenigstens fuer ewig" in 1983 which was produced by Reinhold Heil, one of the members of Spliff. --- Peacock Palace Peacock Palace have released two albums. "Adding Wings" (1991) and "Paraphernalia" (1993). Both of them included at least one song which became a big radio hit in Germany. Most important in the band are singer Petra Jansen (who also writes the lyrics) and Nhoah (keyboard and production). --- Rainbirds This band started its musical life with a huge hit single "Blueprint" in 1988 which remained their only major chart success. Rainbirds, so far, have two lives. The common part is singer Katharina Franck, who also writes the lyrics. She's the daughter of a german diplomat, and grew up in Brazil and Portugal before coming to Berlin. For the first two albums, the Rainbirds were a guitar based band. The other band members were subsequently replaced by Ulrike Haage, and for the last two albums the Rainbirds music thus became keyboard based. Most of the lyrics are in english; the last album added a french and a portugese song. In addition to their work as Rainbirds, Katharina and especially Ulrike have written quite a lot of music for theatre. Our selection of songs has some remixes of older songs so that those Ectophiles who already have all or most of their albums still find something new on this tape. --- Invisible Limits An electronic band from Dortmund, which has been very prolific over the last years, though airplay has been very low. This is mainly the band of Marion & Andreas Kuechenmeister, where Marion writes the lyrics. On their current tour you get a CD with new releases with your ticket, which is not available elsewhere. --- Barbara Gosza Singer/songwriter Barbara Gosza (born in 1966) grew up in Chicago, Munich, Athens and only came to Berlin in 1988, where she started to play her music (acompanied by guitar) in subways and pubs. There she got the attention of a record label and was asked to make an album. The resulting "Love It Is" was not very remarkable. Her 2nd release "Beckett & Buddha", now produced by Sven Regener (from Element of Crime), displayed her full potential. --- Steinzeit Steinzeit is the project of FM Einheit, drummer of "Einstuerzende Neubauten". In the last years he has been very busy writing theatre music, several albums are available under his name, often with Ulrike Haage of Rainbirds. The two songs we have selected here feature Katharina Franck of the Rainbirds doing vocals. Both have been written by Bertholt Brecht. --- BAP BAP is one of the most popular German bands - inside Germany, that is. They come from Cologne and their lyrics are written in "Koelsch", which is the dialect of Cologne area. Bap has 7 members, Wolfgang Niedecken writes the lyrics and sings, whereas Klaus Heuser, the lead guitarist has the main influence on the music. The band started off with Wolfgang Niedecken, an art student, who played the guitar at parties and sang along with it. Often he was joined by his friend Manfred Boecker with his bongos. They started to have small gigs at local pubs and from there became a local cult band. They found themselves some other musicians and formed a band. The first album was recorded in 1979, but it is more a solo album from Wolfgang - the original line-up was later "replaced" by other musicians. Their main influences are Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones. Their big break-through hit was called "Verdamp lang her", which means something like "A long time ago". The name Bap means "Dad" in "Koelsch". One album was even released in the States, but was not very successful. So far Bap recorded 9 pretty successful studio albums. Their live concerts are big parties with lots of fun for the band and the audience - 3 to 4 hours of music are no exception. They never play with a support band. They are very politically active and don't hesitate to write songs about the hypocritical nature of politicians or the increasing violence against foreigners in Germany. They also organised charity concerts etc. As Bap insist on singing in "Koelsch", their chances of getting popular outside Germany are very small, but the rest of the world doesn't know what they are missing! = ) --- Extrabreit Extrabreit, one of the more rock oriented bands of the Neue Deutsche Welle, shared the same fate as most NDW bands and artists. They more or less disappeared with the end of the NDW. A couple of years ago a 'best of' album appeared which featured some techno-like remixes. The single most famous song of Extrabreit remains "Hurra, hurra, die Schule brennt" (Hooray, hooray, the school is burning) where "Die kleinen Maedchen in der Vorstadt tragen heute Nasenringe aus Phosphor" (The little suburbian girls nowadays wear nose rings out of phosphor) is one of the more popular lines and gives a feel of the kind of lyrics of Extrabreit in general and this song in particular. --- Fury in the Slaughterhouse The band comes from Hannover and has already recorded a few albums. Their latest album "Mono" even came out in the States, and if our information is correct the song we have selected ought to have received some airplay there. This is another band which only sings in English. They want their fans to also support Greenpeace. --- Dark Orange / 24 Hours Dark Orange is from northern Germany, from Hamburg. They've released two albums, "Oleander" (1991) and "The Garden of Poseidon" (1993). The last one has also been released in the US and most of Europe. All songs are in English, beautifully sung by Katrin Wegener, who also wrote most of the lyrics. Although we've selected two covers, they usually play their own material. Dark Orange doesn't exist anymore. Instead they are now performing under the name "24 Hours", as they can already be found on the "Heavenly Voices" collection. --- Dob Russkin This is the project of keyboarder Thomas Bettermann (known from his jazz/fusion work with the Volker Kriegel Group) and singer/songwriter Su(sanne Dobrusskin). "Charm Away" is their only release as a duo. --- Udo Lindenberg Udo Lindenberg, starting from the Hamburg music scene, became an important figure head in the German music scene since he's been around and successful for 25 years. These were very prolific years; he released at least one album per year. His image certainly is that of a mostly drunken good-for-nothing, especially with older people. But his lyrics are always intelligent and critical. He has a very personal, dryly funny and unmistakable style, as well in writing as in singing his lyrics. --- Ideal Ideal were a band from Berlin who basically started of what was later know as the "Neue Deutsche Welle" ("The New German Wave"). They only stayed together for a few years in the early 80s and they only recorded two albums, but they became very popular. Their music style was very innovative at the time, but they were copied by quite a lot of other musicians and bands later. Annette Humpe, the singer, also wrote the lyrics. She and her sister Inga have been involved in many projects, performing and producing, until today. --- Herbert Groenemeyer Herbert Groenemeyer is a singer/songwriter, as well as an actor. His most famous role was as the journalist in "Das Boot". His first album was recorded in the late 70s, but he only became famous with his album "Bochum" (a tribute to his highly industrialized hometown) from 1984. His lyrics are often dealing with political subjects. His singing style is very particular, his songs vary between rock and ballads. Although he normally only sings German, he also recorded one album with his greatest hits in English. --- Myrna Loy We actually don't have a lot of information about this band, except that they've released 3 albums. They are from Bonn. --- Peter Schilling Peter was only selected to fill up the tape and his most popular song, that we've selected, features "Major Tom", so this was an excellent reason to do it. ___________________________________________________________ ( "Tell me all the plans you have for the great beyond. ) ) Will you be physical again, or be a cosmic vagabond." Posting the relevant bits on Eliza Gilkyson. Although it was billedas "Andreas Vollenweider and Friends," the concert at the Warner Theatre Tuesday would be more accurately described as "Friends and Andreas Vollenweider." After all, the Swiss harpist was extremely generous in showcasing his new sextet and, in particular, the considerable talent of singer Eliza Gilkyson. The same ensemble appears on Vollenweider's new album "Eolian Minstrel," and though Gilkyson's lyrics gravitated toward lofty meditations, her bright, keening soprano voice helped push VOllenweider's music out of the new age categoryand into a more vibrant pop sphere. I tried splitting the difference and calling it "Fumbling towards Rashomon redux," but ran afoul of the limit on the length of subject lines. Anyway... :-) [resume flashback to Saturday afternoon] We were shown to a booth at the back of the dining room upstairs, which was next to a window with a view of the street below. At least one of us observed that this could facilitate our sighting the rest of our group, when and if they made it in. Until then, various conversations went on among subsets of us, until the opportunity to order appetizers manifested itself, after which the same general patterns of interaction essentially resumed, this time over french fries and mozzarella sticks. Valerie joined us after a while, and reported that after the page request had filtered through the store bureuacracy, it got no response, apparently because they were no longer there. This we took as a hopeful sign that they were in transit. Some of us thereupon began to estimate the amount, and types, of pizza needed to cover all of us. Not long thereafter the order was placed. Fairly close in time to the latter event, though I no longer remember the exact order of the two, we finally achieved a full body count. We were treated to an account of the passage through heavy traffic and unfamil- iar street patterns, but all was well that ended well, and eventually the several pizzas arrived. The discussions continued to evolve, turning toward such things as trips to Washington, restaurants, the Internet (it was that, after all, that brought us together in the last analysis), and a couple of other things. Vickie, and possibly others, made a point of annotating glasses, parmesian shakers, walls, tables, and the graffiti already placed there by previous customers with the names of the various artists in our pantheon, with Happy Rhodes, of course, occupying the position of _primus inter pares_. At one point, someone was admiring Vickie's artistry on a water pitcher, only to notice in dismay that the name of Jane Siberry had inadvertently been omitted. This Vickie promptly moved to rectify, notwithstanding that it threw the symm- etry of the original design off somewhat. For no apparent reason, I started to ponder whether "fumbling towards ecstasy" could serve some sufficiently imagin- ative sportswriter as a football equivalent of the "hitless wonders" sobriquet applied decades ago to the Chicago White Sox of the period. Inevitably, the time drew near for those who were attending the main event presumably everyone but me) to start to prepare for it, and the discussion turned to such practical matters as whether to get in line (in the rain) early, or kill time at someone's apartment in the meantime; the optimal means of conveyance to the Vic; and--arguably most important in the long run--how to slip a tape recorder into the concert. The decision was finally made to take cabs directly from the restaurant. We then asked for, and got, the check, and figured out the ante per capita. Amazingly, the sum of all individual payments equalled the bill exactly. We emptied out of our niche, leaving behind two slices of spinach pizza; hit the head, as the saying goes, in some individual cases; and were soon reunited with the chill and precipitation on Superior. Those destined to catch Sarah's act piled into a couple of cabs heading north on Michigan, and I crossed the street and headed to the bus stop at the other end of the block. A 147 was right there to get me across the river, and after a couple of other connections, I was home. The knock-for-knock on the concert itself is, of course, only available else- where in these pages, inasmuch as I was never anywhere near it that night. It may be just as well that I wasn't there, however; a few hours later, I found myself waking up from having dozed off earlier in the evening, regrettably missing slightly over half of _The Midnight Special_ in the process. Be all this as it may, I remain supremely confident that Sarah sounded every bit as good in concert as she does on her recordings :-). I'll > need to purchase some m'self... Who's Josh? Well, I am, as a matter of fact. I've been lurking in the shadows of Ecto for about a month now. Mike and I are best friends from way back. We spend half of our time talking/writing/obsessing about music, some of which Mike has already mentioned (Fripp, etc.). Speaking of Fripp, I wonder if the Ectophiles are aware of an album that Fripp did with Toyah Willcox (his wife). The short-lived band they formed was called Sunday All Over the World. Their one album, "Kneeling At The Shrine," is very interesting. I remember thinking, "Hmmm... Kate Bush meets King Crimson" when I first heard it. Toyah is no Happy, Kate or Sarah, but Ectophiles with prog-rock tendencies should definitely check it out. (c1991, E'G Records, Ltd.) Sorry if this is old news. > (though, truth be told, I'd rather Sarah were coming back to town instead > of Tori) This will be my first time seeing Tori, but I, too, wish Sarah were coming back to town. I saw her show here in Rochester, NY a few weeks ago. I read postings from folks who saw the Purchase and Buffalo shows, but I wonder if anybody besides me saw the Rochester gig. It was truly incredible. I was blown away by the INTENSITY that came from such an apparently soft-spoken, approachable, down-to-earth person like Sarah. Wow! Such power, but offered in such an effortless way. I could gush on for pages and pages, but it's all been said before. Sarah, come back! > >I have "Warpaint" and I like it, though I was little surprised > >with the overall electronic nature of the music. What should I consider > >buying next? > > You don't qualify that comment about being surprised by Warpaint. I happen to know it's in stock at the downtown > Tower. (as are Warpaint, Equipoise, Rearmament, and another disc or two) I know what Mike was driving at, since we both had the same initial reaction upon hearing Happy for the first time. I picked up "Equipoise" and was surprised and somewhat disappointed by the overall electronic atmosphere of the album. It just sounds cold to my ears. That is a pretty strange comment coming from a guy (make that two guys) who used to listen to Tangerine Dream all the time. I will check out Vol. I & II and Rhodesongs, per your advice. I am hopeful about "Equipoise," etc. though, because I have found that the music that I really love is not the music that I flip for upon first listening. I believe (not that anyone asked) that the most powerful music is that which pushes you beyond your current "comfortable" listening range. Similarly, I have found that acquired tastes are the ones that last the longest. Anybody out there have any thoughts on this? > Welcome to Ecto...it's nice to have another local online. Are you going to > the Loreena McKennitt concert? There will be a definite ecto contingent > there... I will be going to Loreena in NYC on May 12th. Wheeeeeeeeee!!! Sarah, Loreena, and Tori all within a few months? What a great thing for a neophyte Ectophile (Nectophyte?) like myself. Two more things... if anyone is interested, I have written out the guitar chords for a bunch of Sarah tunes. Surprisingly simple progressions. So far, the list includes Mary, Vox, Drawn To The Rhythm, Good Enough, Lost, and Into The Fire. Any takers? Even beginning guitarists can handle this stuff, so don't be shy! (Now that I think of it, this is probably old news, too.) Secondly, it looks like there are some Wesleyan folks on this here list. Count me in (class of '87). Cheers!
