After another 2 week interruption of my mail/news feed I'm finally up to date with all those digests again, although I must admit that I don't find the time to read them all from front to back anymore. I just have to hope that I don't miss something vital (e.g. another revealed birthday). Before I start quoting and commenting on earlier messages, let me key in some news. Last week we enjoyed the visit of Christine Waite and her sister Wendy. It was a lot of fun meeting another ectophile. Unfortunately time, as always, was much too short. Thursday we were visiting a good friend of ours and we took the occasion of his birthday on the following day to treat him to Equipoise, thus completing his Happy collection. He directly started reading the lyrics; already knowing where the gems can be found. :) Friday night we saw Peter Gabriel in Dortmund and the Westfalenhalle was sold out with 18000 spectators. I had been wondering why I hadn't seen any posters promoting that concert, there was just _one_ very close to the venue, but I saw on many T-shirts that this was "the secret tour", so maybe that explains why. I was quite glad that I didn't bring my recording walkman with me, as security searched everyone with a jacket or bag. It would have been no fun to be banned from the venue with a ticket in my hand, although it would have been profitable to sell it. It's been a while since I've seen that many people with cardboards looking for tickets. We only arrived 15 minutes after they opened the doors, so the hall was already very crowded and we ended up standing 2/3 of the hall away from the stage, or so we thought. To our surprise Peter Gabriel showed up very close to us in the middle of the hall to announce the opening musicians from his Real World label. Well you already read about this tour, so I won't go into much detail. The show was very impressive and well worth seeing, if you get the chance to see something. Although I'm not a small person, it was very hard to see what was going on. The show and music were excellent, but the circumstances weren't too good. We were too far away from the stage, it was too packed to move and the air was too hot and smoky (smoking is not banned :( ). The band was also playing well, no surprise with all those familiar names; only Joy Askew on keyboard and BVs was a new name for me. Peter was playing for two and a half hours, and it was quite a surprise that he came out again after "Biko" to play his german version of "Here comes the flood" at the piano. On Monday, the same day that I got my next parcel from Aural Gratifi- cation (yuck, $33.45 postage), I also received my first issue (#2) of my "The Box" subscription. This is a double format magazine published by Real World. It looks great, and as far as I read it 'til now, it also is very interesting. Especially the multimedia CD-ROM version of "US" looks like something to look forward to. I just hope that it won't be only available for the Mac. Thanks go to Kjetil for recommending Jan Garbarek Group's "Twelve Moons", which I was able to find two weeks later. I do like that album. If you know of other albums (in addition to "Gula Gula") featuring Marie Boine please let me know. Angelos: > How about this year, instead of a HBP tape, we in ecto give Happy an ad in > ove of the above magazines as a birthday present? Think about it! All we > need is someone to put the ad together, and a small donation from each > ectophile. Well, I thought about it (a bit late but never the less), and I don't think that we should do something like this on our own, without approval for the contents of such an ad from AG. Unfortunately that would spoil the surprise. Woj mentioned: > ah, the perils of bitnet. far as i know, mitch and myself are the only > bitnet subscribers on ecto. i know this since i get messages from uicvm > telling me when my ecto posts get delivered to him. Ha, so I'm not the only one. Not that I'm on bitnet, but when I mail something to ecto from my office account, I get a confirmation message when Michael B. reads it. Yngve about Happy's european radio debut: > She hasn't been played on the radio in Europe before, has she? No mention of that since the existance of this mailing list. But who really knows. Maybe the radio station of the Vatican plays her all the time, now that they can't Sinead anymore. :) "she listens like her head's on fire..": > I'm getting stuff returned to me that I sent out days ago... Let me guess: three days later? ;) Vickie asked: > Am I the only person in the Northern hemisphere who has never seen an > episode of "Cheers" and who didn't watch the wingding on Thursday night? No, you're not alone. So far we avoided watching it, even by accident and although everybody in Boston was pointing to a restaurant(?) where the (some?/all?) episodes are recorded. I don't even know if this is our loss or gain. Anthony wrote: > I love the debut Cranberries album, and was rather pleased to get to do a > phone interview yesterday with singer Delores O'Riordan. Welcome! Welcome back Perttu! (Good luck on your new job in Holland) Congratulations, Julianne! I notice there's a thread in alt.music.alternative about disturbing album covers, but I didn't have time to read anything there. Has anyone posted about Happy's monsters? Kiri is in town and will be coming over on Friday night. We will (maybe possibly probably) watch _Brazil_ on the big screen. She'll be heading back to Mississippi (remember when you were a kid and how fun it was when you first learned how to spell that?) on Sunday, so if anyone wants to come over on Friday night...welcome. I'd say around 7pm or thereabouts. (312) 508-5283 Thanks again for the hugs and support. It means a lot to me, even if I haven't answered you yet...I appreciate it. AlanE, what's the general tone of the Sinead article? In case I haven't said it, I'm enjoying all the postings about names and I'm glad I started it. Did someone from Australia send me a talk message? I got one "call" and shelled out of News, the screen blanked and I waited for a second call but one never came. I wasn't ignoring you, honest! To: rdt@gradient.cis.upenn.edu Sorry for another Happy Phantom parody, but it was already written, so I thought I would use it anyway. I just needed to rant about the mainstream rubbish on the radio before 10pm. It's called Happy Rhodes-Fan. And if I buy today, I'll be a Happy Rhodes fan, and I'll go chasin' the dross out of the chart, and I'll hum Kate B through the street without the strange looks, and I will never need the off switch on the radio, I'll wake to vocal harmony every day, and the atrocities of rave I can forgive, the Happy Rhodes fan has no right to bitch oo who the thime is getting closer, oo who the time for taste to change, oo who every day it's getting closer, good stuff starts to sell, confines the rest to vinyl hell So if I buy today I'll be the Happy Rhodes fan, and I'll go showing my CDs in a jewel box, they'll be my ticket to the Universal jukebox, there's Anne Clark walking Sarah 'cross the floor, and good music sells by the score, they say Kate B does her crossword with her cat, but I'm still the devil to a girl who likes Take That, or who will they hear the music and from the brink come back, and find an artist so they can truly hear again, will they still want the awful stuff of old or do we soon forget the stuff we no longer hear... Hope it's not too bad. Very interesting stuff. Talking about names, my surname is very rare in Germany. It comes from the Frisian name Carsten. Carsten is a very common first name, and Carstens a very common surname in Germany (remember our ex-Bundespraesident Carl Carstens). This caused some persistent confusions in my life. Lots of people (my teachers, my schoolmates, my fellow students, my comrads in the FAF...) call me Carsten or they are writing my surname Carstens. The most awkward situations happen since I moved to my present flat: My lessor's surname is Carstens and he's living in the flat below. Now, many people are ringing at his door when they want to see me. This is very awkward when I'm having a party and people are coming late at night 8-(. See you. I really haven't been posting here much have I! Life's been busy, busy busy and busy! A while back I posted about having a Boston Ecto party this weekend. Well, no replied an interest and I'm actually going to be busy, so it ain't going to happen! (Say it ain't so joe!) In Boston there was a Kate Bush convention last Saturday. It went so-so. Merchandise was overpriced and not many people showed (but it seems it wasn't publicized too well either!) I did get to meet a couple of friends that I correspond with and a bunch of us went to dinner and had a great time (I did get to finally meet Pauline Struckey though! Which was cool!) I called a Cyndi Lauper 800 number that someone posted and it was kind of amusing. The day I called she was appearing in Norfolk, VA (the town of my birth). If anyone's interested she's appearing on Late Night tonight and Boston at the Paradise tomorrow night. I also heard that Deborah Harry has an album coming out soon, which may or may not be good news considering the general quality of her post-Blondie work (I hated "French Kissing in the USA"). We shall see! - Michael B. ======================================================================== The ecto archives are on hardees.rutgers.edu in ~ftp/pub/hr.
