That's because I've been too busy with my work. Since that last post I've been installing telephone switches in UK, Hong Kong, New Zealand. I have some 10 Mb worth of unread ecto posts. Anyway, now I'm going to settle down for a while. I'm moving to Holland in mid June and am staying there hopefully until June 94. This would give me more time to do the things like reading ecto (old archives, until I get dutch account or good connection to this machine in Finland). Nor me. I can't remember ever having seen a complete episode. Though it is pretty popular over here, I can't imagine an episode of it becoming the most wathed TV programme of all time. Actually, I tella lie: some years ago I saw an episode with John Cleese in it. What a bore! What days of the open hand? I liked the first album alot as well. I picked it up on tape at a used record/cd/tape store because I had heard alot about her and wanted to hear her music. I wasn't disappointed.:-) I borrowed Solitude Standing from the Library here when it came out but couldn't really get into it. I liked the song Luka (though I found it annoying at first) but the song that really irritated me was Tom's Diner. Its been a few years since I listened to it and I'm inclined to borrow it again to see if the passage of time has changed my opinion of it. >I never really cared for Luka (in SV terms...it is certainly better >than most top 40 stuff, and even much of the stuff WEQX plays). When Natalie Merchant was on MTV120 minutes, they played that video and Natalie revealed that Matt Mahurin had directed it (!!!) She said that they knew him from Jamestown and he had agreed to direct the video(!!!) Okay, I'm going to go off on a tangent here for a moment :-) Matt Mahurin was a hot shot illustrator...meaning he went out of college into Time magazine. For his first major job, he had a 5 page spread on domestic abuse in Time Magazine. He has since then expanded into photography and video and made a name for himself in those areas. His photographs appeared in Rolling Stone Magazine, he did the cover of Tracy Chapman's debut album and other than the What's the Matter here video, he has directed scores of others ranging from Cher to the Black Crowes (She talks to Angels, the new one by Ugly Kid Joe Cat in the Cradle? the original was by Harry Chapin I believe and I am convinced, though I have no proof of it, that he directed Fast Car for Tracy Chapman.) these are only a few that I know of. Now that I've let my enthusiasm run its course I will return to Suzanne Vega.:-) I think I am in the minority in liking Days of Open Hand. I keep finding the cd in the bargain bins and no one I have talked to likes it. I just find the album to be thematic in both sound and subject matter, though very dark and somber in mood. I generally have to listen to it from beginning to end and let it wash over me. Some of the songs use very complex and interesting imagery and Suzanne Vega's voice is very low and sometimes her voice takes on a rhythm like she is speaking or chanting. I haven't had a chance to listen to 99.9 F though I have liked what I have heard on the radio so far. A friend of mine was nice enough to make a tape of it for me so I could listen to it. >Also, I saw a bit on 10,000 Maniacs on ABC's In Concert last night >(which also covered Peter Gabriel) (serendipity, or what?). We had the tape ready to go but unfortunately we seemed to have missed the time it started and only caught the closing credits. I did catch last weeks' though with Aimee Mann, Annie Lennox and Tori Amos. They didn't play enough of Aimee Mann but they did show a live performance by Tori Amos singing Crucify and Silent All these years (I think?) I taped it but I haven't had a chance to see it all the way through. I have Iris and I don't think there is any chance in Hell of ever seeing Suspira (though someone did review it for our school paper). I have heard it described as madragal and that definitely intrigues me. I like Iris but I would like to hear how they tackle more traditional arrangements and songs. Subject: More on names (too much time on my hands) Hello, This name thing has become very interesting. Someone I work with teaches classes on geneology and gave some sheets to use to trace my family's history back. Unfortunately, there are gaps on either side and as much as my father has told me about his grandparents he doesn't seem to know much more about the family except that they came from the Ukraine and we had some Mongolian ancestors. His mother was Polish and could speak both Polish and Ukraine. She lives in California now but I would like to speak to her about the family. My parents were always full of stories about the family. One being the Czumko Ellis Island thing. My father told me his grandparents emigrated from the Ukraine and set up in Lockport, NY and lived just about the way they did back home. My mother's family settled in Buffalo around the turn of the century near as I can figure. Her grandfather (father's father) was from Scotland from this place called Toumintall (or something like that. I've found it on the map..it apparently has the highest altitude of any Scottish city) His surname, MacPherson, means 'son of a parson'. His wife's name was Helena Boniventure Smith (awesome name) and they moved to Canada where they simply went across the Peace Bridge to Buffalo where they stayed. My mother's mother was Italian. Her grandmother is the only one alive and she has an amazing collection of photographs from around the early '20s of the family. Her parents had emigrated from Northern Italy to Buffalo and she has lived there all her life. Their names were 'Americanized' going from Sisti to Sist, Francesca to Francis, Lucia to Lucy. My great-grandmother's maiden name was Caputi and there are rumours in the family that it is of Spanish origin. Its getting too complicated!! I still have relatives in Italy who live in Florence and my Uncle, as oldest living male MacPherson, holds the deed to a house in Scotland that no one has seen, except a cousin of ours who did some research on the family and went there. whew! I suppose you can see why I am interested in finding out more about my family.:-) I have always had an interest in history and this is history at its most personal. The origins of names are fascinating. My mother was given a celtic name that means "dark one" appropriate for the only black-haired child of her parents and her brothers and sisters's names reflect their history as well. It is one thing that I always admired about Chinese names: the names mean something and though there are a small number of surnames the personal names are seldom generic. Quenby Can you tell I have alot of free time on my hands this morning? ;-) ======================================================================== From: depeche@binkley.cs.mcgill.ca (S. A. Ezust) Date: Mon, 24 May 93 12:30:03 EDT Subject: miranda sex garden A lot of questions are being asked about MSG now... I thought I'd try to answer the ones I can. As far as I know, there are 4 CDs out by them. Madra - a 40 something minute 23-track CD of 100% acapella english madrigals. It's okay, but it gets a little monotonous unless you really get into this sort of thing. The voices are beautiful of course. Gush Forth My Tears - about 25 minutes, containing the original version from Madra, as well as 3 remixes. The remixes have lots of synths and drum machines thrown in, and they make good dance tracks. This is how I got introduced to the band. Iris - Also about 25 minutes, containing some very different styles of songs. The first one, Lovely Joan, is one of my favorite tracks by them, as it starts off acapella and very relaxed, and and things gradually get louder, faster, and more intense, and then it reaches a climax. Finally, things die down and you are set gently to the ground again. Kinda like an orgasm, really. The second song, Falling, is a very gothic-sounding track reminding me of Victorialand by Cocteau Twins. If they did an entire album like these two tracks, I'd buy it. The third and forth tracks aren't the same at all - they are more of a "taster" of things to come in "Suspiria" - Very electric guitar and drum oriented, kinda grungy, with very few "Crisp and clear" sounds thrown in from time to time. Suspiria - a total turn-around for the group - consistantly grungy, with drums and electric guitars. Some of it reminds me of VERY EARLY cocteau twins. It hasn't grown on me yet. This one's about 40 some-odd minutes. -- | Alan Ezust depeche@binkley.cs.mcgill.ca Montreal, Quebec, Canada | |------------- McGill University School of Computer Science ----------------| "Lick the carpet, dust the dog, mow the windows, shine the socks... WRT Woj on _World Cafe_: my understanding, based on the playlist I got after their Happy interview last year, was that they put out a daily show, but some stations only run it weekly. Or was that _Echoes_? Or both? WRT somebody's observations on songs about child abuse: It should be noted, IMHO WIVH, that "What's The Matter Here" is closer stylistically to "Luka" than to "Hell Is For Children." Gotta fly. For some reason, most people think my name is Tamara, and I'm constantly having to correct them, although sometimes I just let it slide. I often don't even bother telling people my last name (Boursalian; it's Armenian) because they never remember it, let alone say or spell it correctly. But really this story is about some funny we mail we got at my parent's house a while back. My father's name is Kevork (he goes by George), and his brother's name is Krikor. My uncle had something sent to our address, and it came addressed to "Kervor Krikor". Any Armenian who may be reading this is already cracking up because not only did they screw up my father's first name (Kervor instead of Kevork), but "ker" means "fat" in Armenian, while "vor" means "butt"!! That was definitey the best screw-up I've seen! Well, back to work. Oh yeah, on the future release board at Sam Goody's, it says that Kate's album is coming out in August. Well, I don't believe it either, but I thought I should pass it on anyway.
