Subject: more replies, no new threads more last name fun: my surname is woiccak. rumor has it that it was mis- spelled on my grandfather's birth certificate when he was still in poland. i don't really know if that is true or just a story that has been handed down. in either event, my surname was originally spelled wojczak and pro- nounced the same way. the irony of my nickname is thus multiplied.... :) i *finally* picked up miranda sex garden's _iris_ ep and i wonder why i did not earlier. it's incredible. i suppose i can understand why some might not have been too thrilled by the direction that they staked out away from the pure madrigal style (however accurate or not), but i much prefer the power chords and sheer power of _iris_. i guess _suspira_ just rose a few notches on my to-buy list as a result. both grace pool albums exist on cd (or are there more? i'm only aware of two in any event). i found both in cut out bins for like $3 a piece. that's pro- bably your best bet as i doubt they are still in print and orderable from record stores. insert cries of joy here for meredith's playing of a nicky skopelitis tune on the champagne jam| that could very well be a record of the year: mystical weirdness and soundscapes and wonderfulness. plus, as an added bonus, the bassrumble of jah wobble all over it. yum| and now i'm caught up with ecto digests. yip yip yip| +woj ======================================================================== Date: Sun, 23 May 93 22:51:29 CST From: kiri Subject: stuff fortunately my last name is hard to screw up, and has been in documented existence since the vikings came to scotland (there is a plaque in ne scotland with Hargie on it). I just wanted to let everyone know that I am starting two new mailing lists. One is dedicated to Cyndi Lauper and the other to Suzanne Vega. Of course, like Ecto, discussion is not limited to just Cyndi or Suzanne. Both of the lists are unmoderated and sent as loose mail, not digest (sorry). Send subscribe and unsubscribe requests to: smyerbur@erasure_sl.cc.emory.edu Make sure you say which group you want to join! The mailing list for Cyndi Lauper is called She Bop and all messages (besides subscribe and unsubscribe) should be sent to: shebop@erasure_sl.cc.emory.edu The mailing list for Suzanne Vega is called Undertow and messages should be sent to: undertow@erasure_sl.cc.emory.edu On a related note, for all you Cyndi fans out there, I saw her in concert here in Atlanta this weekend. It was a very small venue and very intimate (I was about 10 feet away from her). She premiered songs from her soon to be released album, Hatful of Stars. Her band was very tight and they all seemed to be having a lot of fun. Cyndi seemed especially happy to be performing again and began crying when she first came out. Cyndi's new songs were good (not great) and included one she wrote with Mary Chapin-Carpenter. The audience was enjoying the new stuff but there were requests throughout the show for the old hits. Cyndi said she wouldn't be doing any of those older songs, but she came back with an encore of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," "True Colors" (with just Cyndi and a violin), and "Change of Heart." Over all, it was a good concert and well worth seeing IMHO. What days of the open hand? Iron bound/Fancy poultry didn't do much for me. Calypso is an incredibly beautiful song, and might be my favorite (depends on whether I've listened to that or Small Blue Thing more recently. I never really cared for Luka (in SV terms...it is certainly better than most top 40 stuff, and even much of the stuff WEQX plays). It is a delicate subject, but I preferred Pat Benetar's Hell is for Children as a treatment. However, what I do not care for is that Luka is what still gets any older SV air play in mosts places that have any (I guess occaisonally Marlene on the Wall). There are other songs that I like much, much better, are most representative of SV's works, and hopefully will be both more enjoyable to the public and more likely to create more interest in her work. Also, I saw a bit on 10,000 Maniacs on ABC's In Concert last night (which also covered Peter Gabriel) (serendipity, or what?). Natalie talked about how she doesn't really care *too much* about the lyrics at the concerts...they are for the music and the dancing, and the moment. She hopes to get (and, of course, does get) people to listen to the albums after the shows, and to look at the lyrics in a more relaxed situation, where the listener can actually absorb the ideas and the philosphy she in conveying. It had my fav 10k Maniac song-Thinking About the Weather, as well as the latest singles. The PG part had a number of (some, but not all live) videos, mostly off the latest, but including In Your Eyes, Sledgehammer, and a piece of Shock the Monkey. Is it indicative of my psyche that "In The Eye" and "Solitude Standing" are my favorite songs from SVII? I'm devastated. Chris called from Kansas City to tell me that our best friend Tim from KC had AIDS. We met because a mutual friend saw Tim buying Kate albums and said "you should meet Chris and Vickie." We three became bestest friends and even shared a house for a few years. He went with us to Winipeg for BushCon84. I can't believe it. He was in a car accident the month before we met, and it's almost certain that he got AIDS from the blood transfusion. I have no words to express... It's been said that when you tell a joke to an ethnic(1), he laughs when he hears it; an ethnic(2) laughs when he hears it and when he gets it; and a Jew laughs when he hears it and when he immediately tells you the better version he'd heard earlier. That said: In the version I know, the man's name became Sean Ferguson, because he said "shain fergessen (I'm already forgetting)." I was subjected to Cheers' interminable slouch toward mortality. At the end of it, I turned to the guy I was watching it with and asked him if anything in the show was intended to be funny, or if the laughs had leaked in at random from the next channel over. My endless scouring through the bargain bins has revealed another find: I got Victoria Williams's CD "Swing the Statue" for $1.44 at Camelot. Haven't listened to it yet. I also got Ellen Fullman's new album of music for the Long String Instrument, "Body Music", after attending one of her concerts. (One of the members of my performance group is in her ensemble, and premiere a very good new composition.) The music is minimalistic and energetically drony -- note that I'm *recommending* it when I say that it reminds me of the warm hum of distant lawn mowers. Anyone here from the Boulder, Colorado area? I may have a shot at a really good job out there, and am wondering what kind of town it is. Is there an art scene? Is Amendment 2 indicative of a general bigotry, or does Boulder escape that? So, I thought I'd try to do something to rectify this deplorable situation... There is a mail order outlet in Dundee called Compact Disc Services. They specialise in importing non-mainstream releases on obscure and private labels. In my experience they are the place to go if you want to find anything the high street stores claim doesn't exist - they are the only place in the UK (I know of) who stock Loreena's first 3 releases. Their list prices are kind of high but they do have regular and extensive sales (which is how I buy most of the stuff I get from them). They advertise regularly in high circulation music magazines (like Q) and send out frequent and detailed new release lists to their customers. I have discovered several (IMO excellent) bands through them. Anyway, while I was placing an order with them today, I took the opportunity to ask if they'd ever heard of Happy. Inevitably they hadn't, but, after giving them a description of her music etc., John (the guy I was talking to) said that she sounded "really interesting" and they'd certainly consider stocking (and advertising) her stuff. So, can someone (Bob, Vickie?) pass on this message to Suzanne, Kevin or Happy herself? Basically, they'd like to receive a copy of each of her CDs to review, and then, if they think they could sell them (how could they not?), they'll order a whole bunch from AG. This the address etc.: Compact Disc Services Magnum House 140 Seagate Dundee DD1 2HF U.K. Tel: (0382) 76595 Fax: (0382) 736702 The guy I spoke to was John Hoad. The owner is Dave Shoesmith. Feel free to mention my name (in fact, that might help, as John said they tend to ignore unsolicited samples). Since it contains a new idea to find the reason I will post it to ecto. (Hope you don't mind, Br!an?) Br!an answers: > Boy, I've been getting lots of these.. "me too"... > Do you think it's bouncing off one person, > or is it not even making it into Ecto? It definitely is making it into Ecto, since I always get two responses. One from Ecto the list and then one from the automatic postmaster. I presume it's the same with every one of us (IS THIS RIGHT? Anyone posted something recently without getting a bounce three days later? If so, please specify if you're a digested reader or if you get reflected mails). It might bounce off from one person, or one userid or whatever, it might even be one of the userids at rutgers that somehow belong to the Ecto distribution stuff, since it has not gone anywhere else in these three days. We outside of rutgers can't do more than guessing or trying to nail it down. Therefore my suggestion with a kind of 'binary search' to find out IF it's a person. > (i.e. Have you seen my test 1-2-test-1-2 message?) yes, I have. > Anyway, just wanted you to know that I got your message 5/21 > hope we get this straightened out... Thanks, as I said above I see all my messages come back twice. Once as they should from the reflector and once from that bounce. Let's see: Jessica, do you agree with that binary search thingy? Or do you have a better idea? Hey! We can do the test at a single day with results three days later. Presume we are 256 subscribers. Fill it up with dummy ones. Number them through in binary. Then create eight lists where in each another bit of the subscriber numbers is set. Post eight different messages to the lists. look which eight messages bounce. These eight bits (0 if it doesn't bounce, 1 if it does) make a number - and this should be the number of the subscriber who causes these problems. We should leave out numbers 0 and 255 from the subscribers list since these might be caused by Jessica's software for the Ecto list itself.
