This is of course is > relatively meaningless unless you follow the "louder is better" maxim, > or it's corollary, "better is louder." I'm reminded of a maxim frequently spouted by a former roomate (or more precisely, long-term house-crasher) of mine: "If it's too loud, you're too old." (Seeing as she was 19 and I was 33, this came up a few times.) Re: Names: My paternal grandfather's name was Zhitomersky. The rest of the clan shortened it to Zitomer, but my grandfather overdid it slightly and shortened it to Zitt. I guess we can be glad he didn't do circumcisions the same way (*ouch*). My maternal great-grandfather's name was Yitzchok Lazarovitch Kugel. He thought Kugel was a stupid name, so he became Isaac Lazarus, and only told one of his daughters (who he swore to secrecy) the real family name. My sister's husband's family, when they came to Pittsburgh from some old country or other, changed their name from Feuerman to Forbes. My sister now lives in Israel, where people have trouble dealing with a name with three consonants in a row. They're considering changing it back. Actually, I'm the only member of my immediate family who has never changed his last name. I figure that if I had to put up with it when growing up, I'd be damned if I'll give up on it now. Besides, once people believe it, they tend not to forget it :-). ObHappy: Someone just posted the lyrics to "Ode" on a.s.a.r. I hadn't seen them before--beautiful! That's an interesting theory of Vickie's on the etymology of the word "Austral- ia." It also has lent me reassurance that the sentences I write in these pages are about the right length after all :-). Brian's post on the origins of his family name reminded me of what an old prof of mine once told me about how years ago, one Leonard Bloom changed his name to Leonard Broom, and then went on from there to coauthor a famous intro sociology text (while on the faculty of UT, no less), grew rich on the many successive editions thereof, and, according to legend, was finally able to afford a villa in Italy. Now I'm listeing to M7x again (for the 5th time in these last two days. And I think I've only listened to _Whatever 4 times in the last two days. Then again, I heard _Whatever_ 3 times on Sunday (it's perfect sailing music...dad (owner of the sailboat) agrees) and between 1 and 3 times each day this week). Yes, I go through phases. Lest you think Happy never gets played around here anymore, I got home from work today and my sister was blasting _Warpaint_. But anyway, the whole reason I was responding was to shamefacedly admit that somehow, my family's names got through basically unscathed. My grandmother is a Lehmann. Virtually every Lehmann who came to the US became a Lehman. I've been told that her family was basically the only not to drop the second n, and and person I meet in this country who spells their name with two n's (assuming the first letters are Lehma) is a relative. My other grandmother is a Schulhoff. One grandfather was a Rothlein (and to be honest, I've no idea if that's original or modified). Hi Guys! When I was in Beantown last weekend, I stopped in Newbury Tower... And whose face should be on the "Best Sellers" rack, but Happy! They had 10 Warpaints on the rack... And also most of the rest of the collection over in the 'H' section... And while they didn't have her in the "prominant display" above the racks, after unanimous vote of all available ectophiles (ie 1), it was decided that the Happy Monday's three albums were way too prominant. Steps were taken to rectify the situation. Public comment can't be given at this time, but rumor has it that Oliver North will be assuming full responsibility. On a side note, the HS Tower was completely out (they had some albums earlier in the month), and the Columbia Discount House (why it's called this, I don't know, since it's neither just Columbia, nor discount), however they did have the Cranberry's album, and a lonely Equipoise in the racks... HMV and the WIz as usual had no clue. Does anyone have any recommendations on where I can find Ingrid Karklin's CD(s)?? In NYC (or preferably Boston). In the "new" music dept- I like the cranberries... They remind me of something, but I don't remember what... (Vuja De- the feeling I've never felt/seen this before!) I also picked up Laurie Anderson's "Big Science", my first album by her. Is this typical of her??? She makes They Might Be Giants sound saner than an emu on acid!
