Thanks to Art Liestman, who mentioned them to me, I bought the cd when I first saw it (on sale at Tower), and it has been steadily growing on me. The songs are pop-based, but with a voice that really turns them and gives them depth. Delores O'Riordan sounds like Sinead O'Connor a lot of the time and can really push a lyric. This is the first album I've been really obsessed with since _Equipoise_, though I've bought a lot of things recently that I like a lot. Speaking of which, has anyone else heard Praise? A friend loaned us a tape and we bought it immediately when we found it used. The singer's voice sound a lot of Sarah McLachlan's to me at times. The music is world/alternative/ethereal samples bulgarion choirs a bit, gospel choir-type sounds. Wonderful voice used as an instrument. Both of these are highly recommended. The Cranberries' "Linger" and "Pretty" haunt me. --Neile neile@u.washington.edu ======================================================================== Date: Tue, 11 May 1993 14:50:48 -0400 From: Michael Hauben Subject: Does the Net help you be Creative or Have Fun? Hi, I am conducting research for an independent study about computer and communication for college. Vickie saw my post on Usenet and suggested that I send it to the list - so here it is. :) So far I have asked and received many "serious" answers and replies dealing with work, keeping in touch with friends around the world, etc. However I am also interested in what effect the Net (Netnews, the Internet, other Nets, ftp, irc, gopher, mailing lists, e-mail, etc) has on either creative endevors you might have, or just plain silly or fun things. Has access to the Net helped you in any creative hobbies you might have, or just given you a chance to have fun? For example. have your music tastes expanded, or do you know about more plays happening, have you learned about other who are musicians, or artists or writers? And if so, have you gotten a chance to jam, paint, write, or somehow help each other? Have there been any on-going creative collaborative music/art/literary experiments? How has the computer assisted communication helped you be creative or expanded your boundaires? The other side is, have you found more ways to just have fun, or of news ways of having fun. I don't know your level of experience with the net... > > For example. have your music tastes expanded, or do you know ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Oh my god, *YES*! I would say that at least half of my music collection (which comprises over 340 cds, about 200 12" singles, and many hundreds of cassettes) was inspired or recommended by someone on the net. I'm a member of several list-servs (more details if needed) such as: Info-CD - A group devoted to spreading info about the CD format and new releases AON - A fan club for Art Of Noise Ceremony - A fan club for New Order nm-list - A group that discusses mostly indie (non-commercial) music bpm-list - A group of djs discussing dance music and mixing techniques, Ecto - The Happy Rhodes fan club (and extended family!) Love Hounds - A Kate Bush fan club In addition, I have gotten to know some of the people on the net and gotten together, swapped music, or became pen pals with. At one point I was addicted to MUDs (Multi-User Dungeons) which are real-time adventure games with dozens or hundreds of people playing. They can be immensely fun and lead to the occasional all-night plundering spree with a group of hardy net-buddies. I also used to be involved with the local USENET feeds for my area (Austin at the time) to keep up with local events and sales. Several pieces of my furniture came from sale postings on the net. The new _Details_ has an interview with Drew Barrymore, in which she says her favorite records are _The Trinity Sessions_ by the Cowboy Junkies, good for when she's happy and good for when she's not; and our Kate's _This Woman's Work_, good for the latter occasions. Go figure :-). WRT somebody's query on the Psychowelders CD: AD magazine, I think it was, said a couple of months ago that it was about to come out on an indie label. As per usual with these things, it hasn't happened yet. WRT the recent Suzanne Vega thread: For some unknown reason (natch!) it all reminds me of a squib that _Spin_ did on her in the summer of '87, about the time "Luka" came out. It noted that years earlier, she'd gone out for the Barnard College swim team, and didn't quite make the cut on a strict construc- tion of the merits, but they put her on the team anyway because she had a reall y good attitude. Ah, New York! :-) (But consider whom the former Barry Moore renamed himself after, in pertinent part.) WRT Chip's second post: The Langenscheidt's upstairs in reference gives litera l translations of "Arschloch" in both the British and American idioms, and then goes on to give an idiomatic translation of "du Arcschloch" as "you swine." Guess some publishers can't quite part with the notion of coming out with a family dictionary, even in the face of what has appeared in it just before :-). WRT Meredith's second post: somehow, perversely, I feel reassured that I long ago made a sound decision in not developing a passion for hiking in state parks :-). On a more serious level, I recall seeing a commercial once for a line of Sony cassettes for car use, which supposedly have a higher melting point than the regular stuff. Could be worth looking into for future reference :-). WRT Brian Gregory's birthday: For me, 30 was quite survivable. It was 29 when I had the paroxysm of existential angst. While I was waiting for the tickets to go on sale (wondering why there was not a soul there at 9:30, when the tickets were to go on sale at noon), I visited the CD stores in the area. Unlike some people who buy kites on impulse, I didn't get any CDs that weekend (and I'm very very proud of myself for it too). The Sam Goody there had a single copy of Equipoise (under "H"). Looked like it had gone through hell too. None of the other stores (which I doubt have any sort of chains) had anything Happy related. They didn't have any Ingrid Karklins either. :-( I also bought some black shoes (not sneakers; not sure why, but I'm starting to get non-casual clothes to wear on a regular basis now; must be all that weird music I listen to), which are a bit too small. I was told they'd stretch (they're leather after all). They had better. What was I... oh yeah. I'm not sure what all the commotion is about with getting Gabriel tickets. It was pretty easy for me. TICKETS! MUA HA HA HA HA! You all have to realize that this will be my second major concert, third convert overall (first was Zoo TV -- what a start!, second was Suzanne Vega, and now this). Has access to the Net >helped you in any creative hobbies you might have, or just given >you a chance to have fun? I think the Net as a whole is a natural "mixing grounds" for ideas. My musical tastes (or, at least, property :-) ) have been heavily influenced by the net (read: other people's opinions as posted to the net). Listening to Jeffy was bad enough, now I've seen that Vicki's tastes in music are trustworthy, not to mention lots of other Ecto folk. This is good in that it helps me catch up to Jeffy's collection (only 111 more to go), but it's bad in that I CAN'T FIND ANY *&(*^$%* INGRID KARKLINS ANYWHERE. Various 'tricks of the trade' at work come from the net. You can get documents or programs (incl. games) via ftp, which gives you something to do. I think the only truly addicting game I've gotten off the net is Ac Chen, and that only had 13 levels and was solveable. But I digress. My creativity usually falls into the serious nature (specifically, system administration stuff, although it *is* fun to ... er, cause mayhem to someone who bugs you too much). But I don't think there is any difference at all between 'creative endevours' and 'serious stuff' on the net -- it's all information flow. My machine, when it was on campus (when *I* was on campus) was the IRC server for the Univ. of Maryland College Park and a big chunk of the East Coast, judging from our connect logs. I never really got into IRC, because I saw too many people become so thoroughly addicted to it that it was actually a harmful tool. I've seen similar negative things about MUDs. Again, it's all information flow. You can use it for whatever you wish, and you can abuse it (or be abused by it) too. >hauben@cs.columbia.edu >Thanks! >-Michael Hauben ------ Mike Matthews, matthews@ectds.com (NeXTmail accepted) ------ BE ALERT!!!!
