It's amazing - I don't watch this show regularly (I don't watch any show regularly, except ST:TNG, come to think of it, but anyway...), I do watch it from time to time because I do like the acting, and I often like the "messages" behind the shows. But this show was painful to watch! All the adults, with the exception of Kim's biological mother, the judge, and the lawyer, were making complete jackasses of themselves, spewing sexist, homophobic garbage for the entire show. The only characters I could really relate to were Kimberly and her biological mother, and they were getting screamed at and ridiculed for most of the show. I was *this close* to just switching off the TV in disgust - it makes me that angry... But this episode turned everything around so wonderfully in the last 1 minute, that I felt better almost instantly by the end. I never dreamed I was springing a new preoccupation on us all, that of analyzing the ramifications of the rank order. Oh well, I guess it's something to do :-). At the very least, it's an object lesson in how different methodol- ogies can yield different results. On a personal level, I'm not altogether sure what to make of my sudden promotion from 6th to 3rd in the standings :-). (Why does this all remind me of how Sovietologists used to interpret the curren t dynamics of the government from the composition of the group on the reviewing stand for the May Day parade :-)?) Yesterday or the day before, Vickie wondered out loud how Ingrid Karklins was going to keep herself amused between Wednesday and Sunday. Apart from that never being a problem in Chicago anyway, there's always our aforesaid frequency table to fall back on in case of dire need :-). More recently, Vickie speculated: >(Help!! I think I'm turning into Mitch!) I doubt it. For that to happen, she'd have to reduce her posting frequency to well under half what it is now. Then again, Chris may have a point that the numbers of words should be considered as well. Wonder if Uli can develop a program to get a handle on that :-)? _Flirting_ was indeed a fine picture, BTW. WRT Klaus' ideas for engaging the theme of SF in music: the H*P's should con- tinue, IMHO WIVH, to be open to any and all types of music et al., so I don't think they'd be the appropriate vehicle. The concept is good, though, and I think the best approach would be for those interested to submit tracks for a sampler, which could then be made available through Doug's service, a la Vickie 's SiG thematic sampler series. Kudos to Woj for saving me from making myself look like a naif, by suggesting to Larry that he look the frequencies for WBAI et al. up in the newspaper. As for the inability to receive these stations once their frequencies have been ascertained, may I risk making myself look like a naif anyhow, by suggesting that the possibility of some kind of supplementary antenna be explored. Or if you have a model of walkman with a "local/dx" switch, that too may be worth fiddling with. Get-well wishes to Monica Seles. Happy May Day to all. Apparently the knife was huge and serrated, and just happened to be lying around - i.e. it wasn't brought in by the stabber. I was half asleep as my clock-radio spat the information at me though, so maybe there's some embellishments due to an overactive imagination, but whatever happened, it's not a good thing for sport in general. Not meaning to be offensive to Doug or anyone, I'd like to propose a conversion to a safer, more readily available c-90 format. Perhaps we could start with the Happy Birthday project. If we need more space, we could start another cassette. I appreciate the extra time, but the c-100 mechanism is inherently more troublesome than the c-90. Submitted for your thoughts and discussion. I *strongly* disagree with your idea that 100 minute tapes are harder to find or any more likely to get 'eaten' than 90 minute tapes. Perhaps things are different in Philly, but in DC I can get virtually any brand of 100 minute tape (including such popular varieties as the Maxell XLII) at virtually any store that sells blank tapes. I've got somewhere in the neighborhood of 40-50 100 minute tapes and I've never had one eaten by any of my cassette players (including different walkmen, different car stereos, and the deck they were recorded on). I've had a couple of tapes ruined due to moisture (my sunroof leaked... :-\ ) and I had one tape get messed up when I stuffed it in my pocket without a case and wandered around for a couple of hours. (For what it's worth, 75% of my tapes are Denon HD7 100s. I've been very happy with them.) The originaly HGP '91 was only meant to be 1 tape, and those extra 10 minutes would have allowed 2 or 3 more people to include songs. Since we have traditionally used two tapes, it probably wouldn't hurt to use 90 minute tapes, but I really don't see a need to switch. All that said, anbody know what's going on with HBP1 or HGP2? We all post our thoughts to Ecto, and usually a message causes someone else to post a reply, elaborating on or responding to part of this message.
